Yes, power manager should definitely be aware of the external display
and not blank it when the laptop's lid is closed. Using a laptop with
external display and keyboard etc. is very common use case.

[Bug 648618] Re: evolution memory leak

2011-02-09 Thread obrowny
I have the same problem. It eats all my memory within few minutes. Every time I
swicth my computer on, I have to kill the process.
Before on Ubuntu 10.04 it was evolution-data-server and now it is with
e-calendar-factory

One interesting thing is :

If I am connected to the internet on startup, the memory leak happens.
If I am not connected to the internet, this memory leak does not happen.
If I am not connected to the internet on startup but connect it after boot is
complete, memory leak does not occur.

thanks

instead of logging out and back you can also go to
SystemPreferencesAppearance and the theme will reset back to normal
automatically. to return the nautilus theme open the terminal and type:
'ps x -e | grep nautilus'
and then 'kill -9' plus the process number.
getting tired of having to do this every time. thinking of reverting back to

[Bug 410288] Re: Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well

2011-02-09 Thread Coalwater
ok i don't know if this has any relation with this or not, but for some
reason SFTP works just fine with GVFS, though I used some other ftp
clients before, they seemed to drop the connection after a while, but
nautilus seems to keep the connection alive for a long time, if it's
possible maybe you could some how check what's the difference and makes
the problem disappear in the SFTP mode..

[Bug 715584] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2011-02-09 Thread sojourner
I had updated less than an hour before the reboots that showed the crash
, the crash occurred as the desktop was loading (after login) so
possibly some things may not have been fully loaded , I have noticed on
natty that some things like wireless seem to load in the wrong sequence
,sometimes wireless has to be disabled (not disconnected ) and then re
enabled to get it to actually connect even though the indicator shows
bars , perhaps something else loading slow or off sequence causes the
crash , I will try to get more info .

[Bug 714958] Re: desktop should disable automounting when screen is locked

2011-02-09 Thread Martin Pitt
Revoking at_console privileges is neither practical nor desired. It
would mean that you couldn't access the sound card or your modem any
more while the screen is locked; also, this would mean that the desktop
would need to get the privilege to give back at_console privileges to
itself when unlocking, which really shouldn't happen.

I think for this scenario it would make more sense to disable
automounting while the screen is locked. This needs to happen in
nautilus, or perhaps the gvfs volume daemon. I'll discuss that with
upstream.

Moving milestone, as it isn't a release blocker, and the kind of bug fix
that can be done after FF.

[Bug 715783] [NEW] On winxp, putty xming, nautilus sub-optimal

2011-02-09 Thread Paul Carter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Unsure whether this is nautilus, xming, XOrg or ...

On WindowsXP, I started a nautilus x-window with 'nautilus ' from putty, while
an xming service was running.
From the shell command, this opened a gnome desktop window without the menu
panel as well as the requested file-manager window.

It also didn't seem run in background and didn't redisplay the gnu-linux

prompt redisplayed. Strange.

Selecting the deleted items directory complained that the folder
contents could not be displayed.

[Bug 715874] [NEW] should have apparmor profile for gnome-thumbnail-font

2011-02-09 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Nautilus normally uses gnome-thumbnail-font to provide font previews. Eg:
$ gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/application@x-font-ttf/enable
true
$ gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/application@x-font-ttf/command
gnome-thumbnail-font %u %o

If a flaw is discovered in a font library or Gnome and a user navigates
to a directory that has a malicious font file, gnome-tumbnail-font could
be used to execute arbitrary code, write out to files or leak
information. Providing an apparmor profile for gnome-thumbnail-font
would be a good step towards proactively protecting the user from this
sort of attack.

[Bug 715874] Re: should have apparmor profile for gnome-thumbnail-font

2011-02-09 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Attached is a preliminary profile to achieve this. It was tested with various
font files based on http://gfontview.sourceforge.net/features.html as well as
with nautilus. It requires more testing before inclusion in Ubuntu. To try it
out, copy it to /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.gnome-thumbnail-font and then perform:
$ sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.gnome-thumbnail-font

Feedback is welcome.

[Bug 715920] [NEW] When enabling/disabling timestamp display, the separator line between comments and names of commenters should move

2011-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch freshly installed (default settings) xchat-gnome
2. Notice window includes display of timestamps of messages with user names,
which reduces the space allocated to comments
3. Navigate to Edit Preferences Show Timestamps and uncheck box
4. Note timestamps disappear
5. Actual behavior: On all tabs, the separator bar between usernames and
comments does not move
Expected behavior: Separator bar should shift to the left an amount of
space equal to what the timestamps had been using.

Workaround is to manually go to each tab and drag the bars left a little
bit.

space equal to what the timestamps had been using.
+ 6. Workaround is to manually go to each tab and drag the bars left a little
bit.
+ 7. Re-enable timestamping

[Bug 701645] [NEW] Keyboard layout doesn't switch correctly in indicator-applet

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

Ubuntu 10.10
Version of indicator-applet: 0.4.6-0ubuntu1

I set my Scroll Lock key to switch between keyboard layouts. When I do this,
the abbreviated name of the layout shows up correctly in indicator-applet, and
typing works as expected. However, in the pop-up menu of indicator-applet, the
previous layout remains selected.
As a consequence, when I choose 'Show Current Layout', it shows the wrong
keyboard layout.
Changing the layout via the pop-up menu works correctly.

So the problem is, that the right layout should be selected in
indicator-applet when the user switches the keyboard layout with a
certain key.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

Reproducible: Always

Hardware:
On every computer I've tried (Dell desktop, Acer laptop, 7 different types of

logout/suspend/restart, etc) A dialog showing the applet's current setting will
be displayed under the applet that is clicked.
3. While the dialog is displayed, use one of the function keys to adjust/mute
the volume, display the battery and/or suspend the computer.

Expected results:
The function keys adjust/mute the volume, display the battery and suspends the
computer

Actual results:
The Function keys are ignored.

[Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before sending files to the trash in Nautilus

2011-02-09 Thread William (Mike) Alam
After 103 comments, I don't know why I am compelled to jump in. OCD, I
guess.

In pseuocode:

IF NOT Options.Behavior.ComfirmMoveToTrash.Checked OR Confirm(OK to move
filename to trash?) THEN
 MoveToTrash

This is bloat? Seriously?

I detest Windows. I'm convinced that Microsoft is the company Dilbert
works for. I tell all my friends how wonderful Linux is, and what an
easy path to Linux Ubuntu is. But then I have to add: It's still a
little geeky around the edges. For instance, if you accidentally hit
delete, it will move files and even whole folders to the trash without
asking--but don't worry you can get them back. But the trash can isn't
where you expect it to be. It's down here...

True, one of the things I love about Linux is that it runs fast on cheap
hardware and I suppose bazillions of confirmations could add up to
bloat, eventually, but you'd have to work hard to overtake Moore's law.
I fact, I think you'd have to make it a priority.

Maybe an even cheaper fix would be to put the trash bin on the desktop
by default. That's where refugees from Windows expect to see it. Since
Ubuntu is positioning itself as the gateway to Linux, the option could
be set by Ubuntu's installation. This behavior is alarming only because
the Delete key says Delete, not Move and because a new user might
not notice the trash bin hiding out on the bottom panel, but if the
trash bin was highly visible, that should solve it.

[Bug 716149] [NEW] MSN/Hotmail conflict on Empathy

2011-02-09 Thread Niall Deacon
Public bug reported:

Hi folks, I've been using Empathy for 18 months now and until the last
week or two everything has gone fine. I normally leave a Firefox tab at
work logged in to Hotmail and run Empathy on my laptop at home
connecting to multiple accounts including an MSN one. In the last few
weeks when I've logged on to Empathy it as failed to connect to MSN and
returns Name in Use. The solution I found was to navigate away from
Hotmail on my machine at work, after that MSN worked fine. I have
checked and even though there is an option to login to MSN from a
Hotmail window I have never selected it and logging in and out of MSN on
the Hotmail window does nothing.

Is there any way to fix this without a workaround? The problem only
began in the last week or two.

[Bug 715783] Re: On winxp, putty xming, nautilus sub-optimal

2011-02-09 Thread Paul Carter
Sorry, that's not a very precise description.

The background running thing is not a real issue and should be ignored.
I just needed to press return to get the o.s. prompt!

The nautilus behavior is odd but of low consequence; just use another
file browser with xming. Although access to the deleted items folder
being prevented is odd.

When I closed the main nautilus window, the wallpaper window remained
and wouldn't close. I had to close the xming service.

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2011-02-09 Thread Eric Swanson
This affects me too, on an HP HDX16t laptop.

I tried the PPA version of upower given above with no result. Strangely,
looking at upower's dbus interface in d-feet shows that it knows my
energy_rate (discharge rate) and the amount of energy in my battery, but
doesn't calculate time_until_full or time_until_empty.

It reads these from charge_now, not current_now. My current_now is
-1000, but I don't see how that could be causing the bug.

I'll fire up gdb and have a look at upower if I can. I've never debugged
anything but C# and Python before, so it will be interesting...

[Bug 711093] [NEW] [Natty, Maverick, Lucid] External monitor connected w/ Display Port power management not working when laptop LCD powered off

2011-02-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xorg

When an external monitor is connected to my Thinkpad T400s using the
Display Port connection, the monitor never goes into an energy saving
state despite the Gnome power saving settings being enabled. Gnome
screen saver activates, but this does not conserve energy of course.

This bug occurs only when the laptop lid is closed. The bug does not
occur when the laptop lid is open.

I have seen this problem with Lucid, Maverick and now the latest daily
build of Natty.

ubuntu-bug xorg crashed, so I don't know if you received the extra

[Bug 716212] [NEW] Lose Internet after 10 mins on HP Notebook

2011-02-09 Thread bayvista
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 on an HP Pavillion Notebook . I connect
to a Thompson ADSL Router using Wifi. Am using Wicd as a network
manager. I also have a desktop connected the same. I connect via ADSL to
Bigpond and use WPA for security. There are no problems with the
desktop. The HP runs OK for about 10 mins then won't access the
Internet. Wicd shows 'connected'. Only solution is to disconnect and
connect again for another 10 mins approx. Various debug data follows
(can't seem to attach files in Launchpad???)

[Bug 716256] [NEW] extra panel should be able to follow dir changes from the other side

2011-02-09 Thread AmenophisIII
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

if you have two similar directory trees and want to compare/maintain these, you
happen to change relative directories in the same manner a lot i.e. change left
panel to subdir A, change right panel to subdir A, copy/edit stuff in left
or/to/from right panel, cd .. in both, cd subdir B in both...
the dir changes done on one side could be automatically applied to the other
side. this is done by some file managers and ftp clients that use the
commander like view. this behavior should of course be switchable (e.g. via a
menu entry in the go menu synchronize panes).

[Bug 716259] [NEW] command to change focus between extra panels

2011-02-09 Thread AmenophisIII
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

when working with the extra panel one changes focus from one panel to the
other often.
this can be done via mouse clicking or with a huge amount of tab/shift+tab
presses.
either the order of the focus changes should be changed (would probably break
gnome usability guidelines?) or there should be a new menu entry and keyboard
shortcut added for this.

[Bug 713115] Re: pygobject reference leak fix causes a lot of PyGTK apps to fail

2011-02-09 Thread Martin Pitt
We discussed that yesterday on IRC, and we now found a solution which
keeps binary compatibility with existing pygtk. It's a hack, but it will
do for the pygobject-2-28 branch. On the master branch, codegen will be
removed entirely now.

Today, the disk and file manager are behaving as if there is no problem.
I was able to do all of the operations I am used to. I think that this
bug can be closed or transfered to an open question about finding
processes that hog the disk, for it appears that the much improved
performance is due to some process that was hanging on the device that
died or was killed by a different process that used the disk.

In Solaris there used to be a command, fson, that showed all processes
with command name and owner, that are using a disk device. I haven't
found the same command here, and top(1) hasn't helped. Even longer ago
there was one of the *stat commands, it might have been systat or
netstat that could tell you which processes were using a disk.

I think that there is a process deadlock or contention issue, but it is
at the system level and sudo with commands ought to be able to diagnose
and resolve it.

Accepted gdm into lucid-proposed, the package will build now and be
available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

[Bug 716280] [NEW] gvfsd-metadata process pegs CPU while nautilus waits

2011-02-09 Thread bsalem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have been getting delays of 30-60 seconds when nautilus copies data on
an NTFS filesystem in a 1.5 TB My Book external USB disk from Western
Digital. I was able to see the process that has 100% of the CPU and
causes spinners in my Nautilus Windows until it finishes. It is gvfsd-
metadata, for which I have no man page.

Today, I closed an earlier bug thinking that the problem had resolved
itself as I had nominal functionality with nautilus then. I noticed that
the problem returned and looked at running processes with top (1) to see
what process appeared and what it was using when it ran.

I don't know what gvfsd-metadata does or how important it is, but it
seems to be the hog process. As soon as it exits I get the FM back. It
appears whenever I move (drag) files from one dir to another. Another
bug where I had long delays moving a 1.0 GB dir from the boot drive to
this external drive, may be the same problem.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: nautilus 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.3
