[Bug 740754] [NEW] Language selection for newly created user confusing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm When a user is about to log in for the first time, and if only LANG is set in /etc/default/locale, GDM's language picker suggests the language corresponding to the LANG locale. The user may stick to that suggestion, or pick some other language, and the user language will be set accordingly. If also LANGUAGE is set in /etc/default/locale, there are two problems: 1. The language suggested by the language picker is still grabbed from LANG. 2. Because of the no surprise code in Xsession, the user language will be set based on LANGUAGE whether the user picks some other language or not. I would suggest two things to make GDM behave as expected. One of the ideas is described in the failed-attempt.txt attachment. In addition to that, Xsession should test whether it's a new user, and skip the no surprise code if it is. Don't know how to test that, though. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740754 Title: Language selection for newly created user confusing -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 740815] [NEW] [FFe] Updates to enable us to drop xulrunner from main
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xulrunner-2.0 Based on the new Firefox release schedule (http://people.mozilla.com/~sayrer/2011/temp/process.html), we need to drop xulrunner from main as unsupportable, else I'm going to risk spending nearly 100% of my time continually providing support for this across up to 5 stable releases, when most applications using it are in universe and probably aren't interesting to much more than 1% of our users. This is a catch-all-bug driving that work. The plan of action is: couchdb - We will introduce a libmozjs source package for main, totally decoupled from the Firefox release process. This will be used by couchdb (and possibly other spidermonkey embedders in univese in the future) icedtea-web - Firefox already provides an SDK now. We will build icedtea-web against Firefox rather than xulrunner. It seems that icedtea-web only really needs Firefox or xulrunner to do a version check in order to decide whether to turn on some XPCOM bits (which are turned off when built against newer Firefox builds). We should consider making this a pure NPAPI plugin and drop the mozilla dependency entirely (but perhaps not Natty timeframe) swt-gtk - We will update swt-gtk to the stable 3.6 2 release, turning on webkit support and turning off mozilla support. This requires some updates to applications in universe which hardcode SWT.MOZILLA. libreoffice-l10n/libreoffice - declares a build-depend on xulrunner-dev, so we need to investigate why and see if we can remove that. gtk-vnc - has a xulrunner-dev build-depend purely for the NPAPI headers. We can build this against firefox-dev, but it really should just ship its own headers (NPAPI is cross-browser anyway) gnome-python-extras - this is a tricky one. The only thing I can think of now is to turn of python-gtkmozembed and drop everything which uses it (not sure how popular that would make me) mozvoikko - this is a firefox extension with binary components anyway, so must be built against firefox (xulrunner and firefox versions won't be kept in sync in the future anyway) packagekit - has a build-depend for the NPAPI browser plugin. Same as above really - either ship its own headers or build against firefox-dev. ** Affects: couchdb (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnome-python-extras (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gtk-vnc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: icedtea-web (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: libreoffice-l10n (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: mozvoikko (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: packagekit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: swt-gtk (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: xulrunner-1.9.2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: xulrunner-2.0 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: xulrunner-1.9.2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: libreoffice-l10n (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: swt-gtk (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: couchdb (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: icedtea-web (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gtk-vnc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: mozvoikko (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnome-python-extras (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: packagekit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-python-extras in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740815 Title: [FFe] Updates to enable us to drop xulrunner from main -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Note, I'm struggling with swt-gtk at the moment. I've got it built, but everything using webkit crashes inside soup_session_get_feature. This is happening here inside libswt-webkit-gtk.so: 6791 Java_org_eclipse_swt_internal_webkit_WebKitGTK__1webkit_1get_1default_1session: 6791: 55 push %rbp 6792: 48 89 e5mov%rsp,%rbp 6795: 48 83 ec 20 sub$0x20,%rsp 6799: 48 89 7d e8 mov%rdi,-0x18(%rbp) 679d: 48 89 75 e0 mov%rsi,-0x20(%rbp) 67a1: 48 c7 45 f8 00 00 00movq $0x0,-0x8(%rbp) 67a8: 00 67a9: b8 00 00 00 00 mov$0x0,%eax 67ae: e8 ed e3 ff ff callq 4ba0 webkit_get_default_session@plt 67b3: 48 98 cltq 67b5: 48 89 45 f8 mov%rax,-0x8(%rbp) 67b9: 48 8b 45 f8 mov-0x8(%rbp),%rax 67bd: c9 leaveq 67be: c3 retq Note that there is a cltq instruction after returning from webkit_get_default_session which sign expands %eax - %rax, and seems wrong to me. I can't work out why it ends up there (it doesn't get added to the return of any other function, and I can't spot anything obvously different at the source level). I've confirmed that if I hack the binary and replace the cltq with 2 nop's, then the problem goes away and everything using webkit works properly. [Bug 740815] Re: [FFe] Updates to enable us to drop xulrunner from main
As for g-p-e: It's obsolete anyway, as next cycle when we switch to GTK3, stuff needs to be ported to PyGI. The gtkspell API is tiny, so building a gir for that should be easy. However, as it is tightly integrated into Gtk.TextView, we can't mix it with gwibber as long as that isn't ported to PyGI. So for natty we should go with dropping g-p-e to universe and cloning a python-gtkspell source package from it for main. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-python-extras in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740815 Title: [FFe] Updates to enable us to drop xulrunner from main -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 740815] Re: [FFe] Updates to enable us to drop xulrunner from main
First, thanks for the analysis. With Firefox' even more rapid release cycles I agree that it is worthwhile minimizing the xulrunner dependencies. I'll comment about/review the tasks individually. Splitting the gnome-python-extras package is fine for natty. It will not effectively change any code (the alternative would be to port gwibber to GI, and build a gir from gtkspell, which is prohibitively intrusive at this point; needs to be done next cycle, though). Also, upstream development for this ceased, as it's obsolete (in favor of using GTK3 and PyGI), so we won't have to do much effort of keeping the two sources in sync. FFE approved for this. ** Changed in: gnome-python-extras (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-python-extras in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740815 Title: [FFe] Updates to enable us to drop xulrunner from main -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 740815] Re: [FFe] Updates to enable us to drop xulrunner from main
gtk-vnc and packagekit are unintrusive as well, they just need to switch to firefox-dev for getting the NPAPI headers (which sounds better than having to copy them around). This is a very stable API, so shouldn't cause any porting issues (and if it ever breaks, we would have the same issue with xulrunner anyway). [Bug 740864] [NEW] Find result is too light gray
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit I'm not sure if this is a bug in gedit or the color theme in general, but just open a text file in gedit, select Find and search for a random word in the text. The currently selected match is in a very light gray background, difficult to distinguish from the background - quite annoying. [Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768
WHY HAS NOBODY FIXED THIS YET You cannot use Evolution setup OR Calendar on a net-book with 1024x600 resolution! The calendar wants full screen size not taking in to account minus 22 pixels per panel. The only way around is to use the 'Toggle-Zoom' script that utilises xrandr to effectively set the resolution to 1024x768 and squish it in to the screen, sadly though this is an eye strain and shouldn't be considered a fix, or use auto hide on your panels if you dont find it annoying. just something temporary until the Evolution developers can be bothered to fix their error. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/23810 Title: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 730740] Re: Provide support for dynamically loading the new overlay scrollbar feature
Hereby requesting a review of the FFE request. The gtk support patch is up for review at: https://bugs.launchpad.net /ayatana-scrollbar/+bug/740276 (see comment #2) along with an updated branch supporting whitelist, blacklist, and environment variable to control when the feature should be active. A public testing campaign was run during the past weeks, with application compatibility results captured at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Ayatana/ScrollBars The code for the feature and the gtk patch have been code reviewed per our standard development practices. To maintain a respectful atmosphere, please follow the code of conduct - http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct/ . Bug reports are handled by humans, the majority of whom are volunteers, so please bear this in mind. There also seems to be some confusion about the scope of this bug: This bug (and the corresponding upstream bug) is *not* about using evolution on a netbook with a 1024x600 screen resolution! Another way to reproduce, from the soon to be duplicate marked bug: Steps to reproduce: 1) Boot outside of docking station, login 2) Suspend, close the lid 3) Put laptop in docking station 4) Resume with lid closed via docking station power button Expected behaviour: Login dialogue is displayed on external display Actual behaviour: External display stays black; ssh login to the system and killing gnome-screensaver restores access to the session. ** Summary changed: - 10.04, Multi Monitor: gnome-screensaver does not show login prompt with one disabled. + 10.04, Multi Monitor: gnome-screensaver does not show login dialog after resume in docking station with lid closed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/705791 Title: 10.04, Multi Monitor: gnome-screensaver does not show login dialog after resume in docking station with lid closed. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
