[Bug 899882] [NEW] gnome-version.xml file in this package causes incorrect reporting from sysinfo package
Public bug reported: EXPECTATION I expect to see the correct Gnome version reported when running sysinfo. But, what is reported by sysinfo is 2.32.1 when, in fact, I am running 3.2.1 BACKGROUND Originally, I filed a bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysinfo/+bug/896512) regarding the sysinfo package incorrectly reporting the wrong version of Gnome. After digging around a bit, I discovered that the source of the error is the gnome-version.xml file in the gnome-desktop-data package. To fix the problem (locally), I copied the platform, minor, micro, distributor and date information from the corresponding gnome- version.xml file from the gnome-desktop3-data package. It is possible that gnome-desktop3-data seeks to replace gnome-desktop- data as each package refers to itself as the gnome-desktop in its corresponding README file. If this is the case, then sysinfo will need to be corrected... to read from /usr/share/gnome/gnome-version.xml first... and, if that is missing, then (do what it is currently doing, and) read from /usr/share /gnome-about/gnome-version.xml. The latter file is from gnome-desktop- data and the former is from gnome-desktop3-data. [Bug 415320] Re: unlock keyring steals focus (no cursor in overlying window)
It occurs here, too, and reproducible. The entry-dialog pops up right after login. The problem is, that gnome-keyring is stupidly grabbing the entry focus, regardless if it has the window focus. The only solution is to enter a password. I can see that there is a good intention behind this (avoid that people mistakenly enter the keyring password into another window), but this behaviour is very unexpected in X context, and as such it is extremely annoying, especially if other dialogs appear at the same time or slightly later, as it often happens after login. [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes
Thank you David for your solution. It does work perfectly. But...I still think this is an issue and not a simplification. Why would a lambda user be forced to go through dconf-editor (which they probably don't know anything about) in order to have the laptop shutdown when they close the lid because they are finished with their session ? This seem to be a rather normal, intuitive behaviour... Especially when (as is the case on my laptop since Natty) neither hibernate nor sleep work and crash the kernel when executed... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/880331 Title: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/880331/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 899952] [NEW] Nautilus: Browsing filesystem using keyboards is unworkable
Public bug reported: In ancient 2.x versions, in a directory I could just type the name of a subdir and it would be selected. I could use backspace to correct my typing. If I hit enter, the subdir is opened and I can type a new string to select the subdir's contents. This is my desired behavior. In Nautilus 3.2.1, this doesn't work. The actual behavior is very confusing and annoying. Image a directory /dir/sub1/sub2 and nautilus browsing /dir. Actions: problem 1: Type 'sub1a'. Oops, typo: hit backspace. Nautilus will send you to / instead of deleting the last char 'a' from the text field. problem 2: Because backspace doesn't work, I tried using the delete button in my textfield after selecting the appropriate characters. This doesn't work either: it even deletes the selected files (so although I have a blinking cursor in a text-field, the 'delete' key does not act there. Just like with the backspace) problem 3: Do it again, in /dir/ now type 'sub1'. Hit enter. Now type 'sub2'. Nothing is selected, because the textfield shows sub1. Bottom line: Browsing with the keyboard is half-supported, which is arguably worse than not supporting it at all. This half-supported functionality keeps tricking me and it is frustrating. The functionality of 2.x was more intuitive. It was not in the way of other users, but it made me efficient and happy. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: consistency control keyboard nautilus usability -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/899952 Title: Nautilus: Browsing filesystem using keyboards is unworkable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/899952/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 899955] [NEW] On login ignores setting, turns off screen after idle timeout
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Disable power saving 2. (Re-)boot (logoff may suffice, though I've not tested this) 3. Login and don't touch mouse or keyboard after that 4. Wait What happens: Within half an hour (on my system at least) the display signal is turned off (monitor reports No signal). [Bug 873545] Re: No GTK theme applied on login / theme lost after gnome-settings-daemon error.
Comment #40 explains and fixes the problem. The clipboard manager integrated in gnome-settings-daemon doesn't work correctly. When an application (like Opera or Skype) closes, it tries to get the clipboard content of those applications and crashes. Knowing this I could reproduce the crash any time. Open Skype, copy something, close Skype, crash. Disabling g-s-d's integrated clipboard-manager stops the crashes. [Bug 900028] [NEW] Right click on tab bar always targets active tab
Public bug reported: Right click on the tab bar, on a tab other than the one that is open. Expected: Menu will apply to whichever tab was clicked on. It will be useful maybe to update the Evolution packages to the latest stable 3.2.2. [Bug 863154] Re: Wacom Bamboo One tablet random coordinate malfunctions
I can confirm Ingo's PPA using Alexia's disable-history-buffer patch results in Gimp finally being usable in Oneiric. Tested with a Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch and tablet PC. There may be a slight problem with very light pressure strokes not coming through (stroke discontinuous) and tool selection being a little sticky. But that just might need a little fiddling. More testing would be helpful of course. Thank you Ingo. With your PPA we now have a viable alternative while waiting for an official response. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gimp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/863154 Title: Wacom Bamboo One tablet random coordinate malfunctions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gimp/+bug/863154/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open
This is a limitation in how X handles keyboard grabbing. Essentially, when GTK opens a menu, it needs to grab keyboard and mouse. When that happens, gnome-screensaver cannot exclusively grab the keyboard. There are two ways to fix this: 1- Redesign how X handles keyboard grabbing, and probably break compatibility with every single X application. 2- Put a hack into GTK to make menus close themselves after an inactivity timeout. Of course, just fixing the issue in GTK will not fix the issue in other applications that grab the keyboard, such as rdesktop or vnc. We have plans to move screen locking into LightDM. Once that is done, the screen will lock with a VT switch, which will work around this issue. Also, hopefully Wayland will have a better solution for keyboard grabs. This isn't a simple fix, the whole system needs to be redesigned to solve this problem. This is why it's not fixed yet. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49579 Title: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-screensaver/+bug/49579/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open
Not a simple fix? Perhaps not, but it's not 5.5 years of complex either. And you listed two solutions, neither of which were good. Solution: When screen lock seeks to activate, it emits a signal which overrides the mouse and keyboard grabs from all other processes while the screen is locked. Then when the user inputs during the unlock process, the screen lock receives all input. After successfully unlocking, the system 'pops' the screen lock grabs off of a stack and returns the grabs into the previous application. That previous application would see nothing awry, as it would have received no input during the duration, but it would not have received any errors either. This might require modification of the way the x server handles mouse and keyboard grabs, but if the 'hack' were to only allow grab stacking for the screen lock, it shouldn't break compatibility with anything. Simple enough, even if the implementation would require effort. As far as the wayland and LightDM things go, i dunno. A VT switch? like switching virtual terminals? So to hack that machine, I'd need only do ctrl-alt-F7? that seems secure enough. And Wayland will not be ready for 12.04 if I recall correctly, so that's a nonsolution. Businesses need this security, not end users. Businesses use LTS, not regular releases. I hate to be so blunt, but your solution is to wait several more years, and frankly, I'm pretty sure that isn't even remotely an acceptable solution to *anyone* who has been patiently waiting on this to be fixed for 6 years now, especially not business users. Find a better way, or *they* will find Windows, if this is the way security bugs are treated.

[Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes
I agree. I miss a lot of things in this new gnome-control-center.
