[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2011-12-04 Thread John Kinsella
I disagree, dumbing down menu's will only lead to new users NOT learning
in the future... Why not have a screen during install that shows the
Archive Manager and what it can do (mainly create ZIP files) and educate
instead ?!?

[Bug 899858] [NEW] regression in gvfs to connect using obex

2011-12-04 Thread Rene
Public bug reported:

Action browse file on devices from bluetooth gnome applet is not working
since upgrade to Oneiric
Using same hardware configuration (PC + cell phone), it was working fine in
natty.

after correct pairing of devices (same hardware). The cell phone I
connect to is obex capable. it is a Sony Ericsson W20i.

$ gvfs-mount obex://[B8:F9:34:44:B4:10]
Error mounting location: Connection refused
$ obexfs -b B8:F9:34:44:B4:10 m
$ ls m
Phone memory
$

so obexfs is ok, but gvfs-backends has a pb.
After mounting with obexfs, browsing in nautilus is ok.

From the applet if I just try Send file to device, I also get a
connection refused (111) message.

On the phone, the connexion is set as always allow

This works: mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1
This also works: gst-launch 'videotestsrc ! v4l2loopback' (built from github)

So the remaining thing that doesn't work is the stock plugin.

[Bug 899882] [NEW] gnome-version.xml file in this package causes incorrect reporting from sysinfo package

2011-12-04 Thread Chris McIntosh
Public bug reported:

EXPECTATION
I expect to see the correct Gnome version reported when running sysinfo. But,
what is reported by sysinfo is 2.32.1 when, in fact, I am running 3.2.1

BACKGROUND
Originally, I filed a bug report
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysinfo/+bug/896512) regarding the
sysinfo package incorrectly reporting the wrong version of Gnome.

After digging around a bit, I discovered that the source of the error is
the gnome-version.xml file in the gnome-desktop-data package.

To fix the problem (locally), I copied the platform, minor, micro,
distributor and date information from the corresponding gnome-
version.xml file from the gnome-desktop3-data package.

It is possible that gnome-desktop3-data seeks to replace gnome-desktop-
data as each package refers to itself as the gnome-desktop in its
corresponding README file.

If this is the case, then sysinfo will need to be corrected... to read
from /usr/share/gnome/gnome-version.xml first... and, if that is
missing, then (do what it is currently doing, and) read from /usr/share
/gnome-about/gnome-version.xml. The latter file is from gnome-desktop-
data and the former is from gnome-desktop3-data.

gconftool-2 has no effect. The change must be done with dconf-editor (part of

[Bug 415320] Re: unlock keyring steals focus (no cursor in overlying window)

2011-12-04 Thread ThomasE
It occurs here, too, and reproducible. The entry-dialog pops up right after
login.
The problem is, that gnome-keyring is stupidly grabbing the entry focus,
regardless if it has the window focus. The only solution is to enter a password.
I can see that there is a good intention behind this (avoid that people
mistakenly enter the keyring password into another window), but this behaviour
is very unexpected in X context, and as such it is extremely annoying,
especially if other dialogs appear at the same time or slightly later, as it
often happens after login.

[Bug 899885] [NEW] File rename (e.g. using F2) accepts 2 characters only

2011-12-04 Thread soyka
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

Nautilus 2.28.1

Press F2 to rename a file or folder, nautilus displays file or
foldername as editable, highlight part of name to be changed, start
entering replacement text, after 2 characters input nautilus will change
to a different file loosing changes already made.

Hence, editing names of file or folders is not possible in the quoted
version of nautilus in either list or symbol view. I find that a bit
restrictive for an ubuntu desktop user.

[Bug 899638] [NEW] Sound settings missing many many options.

2011-12-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10. I have onboard sound (some kind
of intel one). Anyway, in the sound settings, it is missing an absolute
ton of options that are available via alsamixer. For example, in
alsamixer I can disabled auto-mute (mutes the rear output when you
plug headphones into the front panel), but in the sound settings GUI
there is no such option.

Such a shame that we are still forced to do simple things like changing
the sound settings on the command line in 2011.

[Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes

2011-12-04 Thread Gilles Tournier
Thank you David for your solution. It does work perfectly.
But...I still think this is an issue and not a simplification. Why would a
lambda user be forced to go through dconf-editor (which they probably don't
know anything about) in order to have the laptop shutdown when they close the
lid because they are finished with their session ? This seem to be a rather
normal, intuitive behaviour...
Especially when (as is the case on my laptop since Natty) neither hibernate nor
sleep work and crash the kernel when executed...

[Bug 885939] Re: notify-osd causes the gnome classic session to fail

2011-12-04 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
@Jeremy:
Do you have any plans on fixing this in gnome-session? I think a better
solution will be adding a .desktop file (with NoDisplay=true) for notify-osd.
Also, Sebastien is right and 13_no_fallback_notification.patch should be
dropped.

[Bug 899952] [NEW] Nautilus: Browsing filesystem using keyboards is unworkable

2011-12-04 Thread Eric Feliksik
Public bug reported:

In ancient 2.x versions, in a directory I could just type the name of a subdir
and it would be selected. I could use backspace to correct my typing. If I hit
enter, the subdir is opened and I can type a new string to select the subdir's
contents.
This is my desired behavior.

In Nautilus 3.2.1, this doesn't work. The actual behavior is very
confusing and annoying. Image a directory /dir/sub1/sub2 and nautilus
browsing /dir. Actions:

problem 1: Type 'sub1a'. Oops, typo: hit backspace. Nautilus will send
you to / instead of deleting the last char 'a' from the text field.

problem 2: Because backspace doesn't work, I tried using the delete
button in my textfield after selecting the appropriate characters. This
doesn't work either: it even deletes the selected files (so although I
have a blinking cursor in a text-field, the 'delete' key does not act
there. Just like with the backspace)

problem 3: Do it again, in /dir/ now type 'sub1'. Hit enter. Now type
'sub2'. Nothing is selected, because the textfield shows sub1.

Bottom line: Browsing with the keyboard is half-supported, which is arguably
worse than not supporting it at all. This half-supported functionality keeps
tricking me and it is frustrating.
The functionality of 2.x was more intuitive. It was not in the way of other
users, but it made me efficient and happy.

[Bug 899955] [NEW] On login ignores setting, turns off screen after idle timeout

2011-12-04 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Disable power saving
2. (Re-)boot (logoff may suffice, though I've not tested this)
3. Login and don't touch mouse or keyboard after that
4. Wait

What happens:
Within half an hour (on my system at least) the display signal is turned off
(monitor reports No signal).

What you expect to happen:
The screen to stay on as indicated by power saving settings.

Additional info:
1. Any keyboard or mouse activity seems to make it obey the setting: after that
the screen won't go blank on its own (irregardless of whether or not the bug
has manifested itself during the session).
2. I've disabled screensaver as well, though that probably doesn't concern this
bug.
3. From bug #854624's comments I picked up this settings listing command, in
case it helps:

jani@saegusa:~$ for c in `dconf list
/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power/`; do echo -n
/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power/${c}=; dconf read

[Bug 796188] Re: Feature Request: Tool: Save screenshot of area to clipboard

2011-12-04 Thread Roberto González Correa
bf, I agree with you. In Adobe Acrobat reader it is possible, and it would be
very useful to add support for this tool in Evince. I often need to get copies
of limited areas of the documents that that I'm working with, but the only way
to do it when you are using Evince is by obtaining a full screenshot, and
editing it with an image editor (Pinta or another). I'm not sure, but it seems
to be that Okular supports this feature.
In reply to Marcel, you are right. With Evince you can select an image, copy it
and then paste in the workspace of another application, but it isn't the same
that being able to select and copy any area that you need.

I hope that you can bring this tool to Evince.

[Bug 873545] Re: No GTK theme applied on login / theme lost after gnome-settings-daemon error.

2011-12-04 Thread mniess
Comment #40 explains and fixes the problem. The clipboard manager
integrated in gnome-settings-daemon doesn't work correctly. When an
application (like Opera or Skype) closes, it tries to get the clipboard
content of those applications and crashes. Knowing this I could
reproduce the crash any time.

Open Skype, copy something, close Skype, crash.

Disabling g-s-d's integrated clipboard-manager stops the crashes. If you
need a clipboard manager you can try popular options like Parcellite or
Diodon.

I'll update title and description with this information.

[Bug 863154] Re: Wacom Bamboo One tablet random coordinate malfunctions

2011-12-04 Thread Favux
Thank you Alexia.

As I understand it this is a workaround for the bug which would enable
Gimp to work in Oneiric and has a very low chance of causing regressions
in Gimp. All Ubuntu would need to do is add this patch to their Gimp
package to disable the history buffer and release it as an update.

I quickly slapped your link into a patch form so that Launchpad janitor
would be aware a patch has been submitted. It is untested and Ubuntu
packagers should follow your link to actually obtain the patch.

2011-12-04 Thread Thorsten Hirsch
Here's another one, where scrolling down gets stuck (on page 98):

http://eldiss.uni-
kiel.de/macau/servlets/MCRFileNodeServlet/dissertation_derivate_1687/d1687.pdf;jsessionid=5FB4373623B5C4A7CEE8A195A5FE8EA2

(You have to click on Bestätigung in order to download the PDF file)

Scrolling down does NOT get stuck when using the mouse.
You have to use the page down key to reproduce this bug.

[Bug 900028] [NEW] Right click on tab bar always targets active tab

2011-12-04 Thread Matthew Woerly
Public bug reported:

Right click on the tab bar, on a tab other than the one that is open.
Expected: Menu will apply to whichever tab was clicked on. Firefox/Chrome and
other apps follow this behavior. Another option: the Gnome terminal and
Nautilus focus the tab that is clicked on so it is clear what the menu will
apply to.
Actual: Gedit will always use the menu for the active tab, even if it was not
the tab clicked on. This is not consistent with other apps, and it is not clear
that this will happen.
Personally, I prefer the Firefox/Chrome way, because if I'm right clicking I
don't want focus on that tab, I just want to quickly save/reload/etc.

[Bug 893420] Re: PST import no longer available after update to Oneiric

2011-12-04 Thread Catalin CUTURELA
I'm running Linux Mint 12 final release which is based on Ubuntu 11.10 and I
have the same problem using Evolution 3.2.1 (the last version available). I
opened a bug to Bugzilla (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665292)
and I received the below answer from Andre Klapper, that the distribution is
responsible for not offering this functionality.
-
If the option to import Outlook personal folders (.pst files) is not available
under
File ▸ Import ▸ Import single file ▸ File type,
your distribution might have not enabled this functionality.
http://library.gnome.org/users/evolution/3.2/import-apps-outlook.html.en
-

The Ubuntu team should fix this bug by adding it to the standard
evolution-plugins packet as soon as possible because there are a lot of users
migrating from Windows to Ubuntu and they need this functionality. It will be
useful maybe to update the Evolution packages to the latest stable 3.2.2.
Upon my opinion this functionality is a must and it should be always present as
a standard option if Ubuntu want to gain more supporters migrating from Windows
to Ubuntu, because Evolution is the best PIM on Linux competing to MS Outlook.

Re: [Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2011-12-04 Thread Brad.Turnbough
I agree with Josh 110%.

Kernel bugs are fixed and pushed upstream by Canonical folks. Why not GTK
bugs / issues? How about security issues for that matter? Waiting 5 1/2
years for a security fix is pretty sad regardless of whos fault it is or
who maintains the code. As a customer of Canonical, I don't care who
maintains the code -- I put the bug into Canonical's bug system, so I
expect someone from Canonical to follow through on it. Simple as that.

[Bug 900043] [NEW] Song doesnt play immediatly from nautilus

2011-12-04 Thread Shivhari Shankar
Public bug reported:

When i double click a song file from the file browser, it take a really
long time to play the song.

This only happens to songs that i have not added to my library. For
songs that are already there, it plays fine. But it takes too long(more
than half a minute) for songs that are not there in the library. I think
it imports them to the library first and then plays them. I have a large
collection (15000+ songs) and hence it take extra long.

[Bug 863154] Re: Wacom Bamboo One tablet random coordinate malfunctions

2011-12-04 Thread Favux
I can confirm Ingo's PPA using Alexia's disable-history-buffer patch
results in Gimp finally being usable in Oneiric. Tested with a Wacom
Bamboo Pen and Touch and tablet PC.

There may be a slight problem with very light pressure strokes not
coming through (stroke discontinuous) and tool selection being a little
sticky. But that just might need a little fiddling. More testing would
be helpful of course.

Thank you Ingo. With your PPA we now have a viable alternative while
waiting for an official response.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2011-12-04 Thread Marc Deslauriers
This is a limitation in how X handles keyboard grabbing. Essentially,
when GTK opens a menu, it needs to grab keyboard and mouse. When that
happens, gnome-screensaver cannot exclusively grab the keyboard.

There are two ways to fix this: 1- Redesign how X handles keyboard
grabbing, and probably break compatibility with every single X
application. 2- Put a hack into GTK to make menus close themselves after
an inactivity timeout.

Of course, just fixing the issue in GTK will not fix the issue in other
applications that grab the keyboard, such as rdesktop or vnc.

We have plans to move screen locking into LightDM. Once that is done,
the screen will lock with a VT switch, which will work around this
issue. Also, hopefully Wayland will have a better solution for keyboard
grabs.

This isn't a simple fix, the whole system needs to be redesigned to
solve this problem. This is why it's not fixed yet.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2011-12-04 Thread Josh Leverette
Not a simple fix? Perhaps not, but it's not 5.5 years of complex either.
And you listed two solutions, neither of which were good.

Solution: When screen lock seeks to activate, it emits a signal which
overrides the mouse and keyboard grabs from all other processes while
the screen is locked. Then when the user inputs during the unlock
process, the screen lock receives all input. After successfully
unlocking, the system 'pops' the screen lock grabs off of a stack and
returns the grabs into the previous application. That previous
application would see nothing awry, as it would have received no input
during the duration, but it would not have received any errors either.
This might require modification of the way the x server handles mouse
and keyboard grabs, but if the 'hack' were to only allow grab stacking
for the screen lock, it shouldn't break compatibility with anything.
Simple enough, even if the implementation would require effort.

As far as the wayland and LightDM things go, i dunno. A VT switch? like
switching virtual terminals? So to hack that machine, I'd need only
do ctrl-alt-F7? that seems secure enough. And Wayland will not be ready
for 12.04 if I recall correctly, so that's a nonsolution. Businesses
need this security, not end users. Businesses use LTS, not regular
releases. I hate to be so blunt, but your solution is to wait several
more years, and frankly, I'm pretty sure that isn't even remotely an
acceptable solution to *anyone* who has been patiently waiting on this
to be fixed for 6 years now, especially not business users. Find a
better way, or *they* will find Windows, if this is the way security
bugs are treated.

[Bug 861060] Re: Cannot change settings on mbox account

2011-12-04 Thread Chris Wulff
For me this also happens with imapx accounts. Modifying any setting when
editing an imapx account causes the apply button to become disabled.
Changing the setting back still leaves apply disabled. Editing
preferences for pop accounts works fine for me.

[Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes

2011-12-04 Thread David López
I agree. I miss a lot of things in this new gnome-control-center. For
example, in ubuntu 11.04 (gnome2) we can easily configure laptop lid,
power button, screensaver, user groups, automatic login in unity-2d...
All those things have gone in ubuntu 11.10 (gnome3), now Gnome-Tweak and
Ubuntu-Tweak are essential. Honestly I can't understand the stiffness of
gnome3

[Bug 842513] Re: nautilus-sendto crashes with double free or corruption

2011-12-04 Thread Andres Gomez
Unfortunately, now the crash is different and maybe related to a race
condition (?).

The problem seems to happen in 2 of the nautilus-sendto plugins:
libnstbluetooth.so and libnstevolution.so.

What I've done was removing the rest of the plugins and just running
valgrind and gdb with each of those 2 plugins.

libnstevolution.so :

Valgrind:

The problem is not reproducible. I will attach the log.
