2012-04-08 Thread franco_bez
In a dual montior setup do nothing blanks **BOTH** screens

Even worse opening the lid the monitors remained black, no matter what I tried
I could not get them back.
I had to reboot using magic sysreq REISUB.

This behaviour is present in Oneiric and Precise on my ACER Laptop with
Intel Graphics Card

Please check if solved by update to g-s-d 3.4.0
To check update with beta2 live CD: when at choice of Try Ubuntu/Install
Ubuntu, (connect net and) switch to tty1 (ctrl-alt-F1) and 'sudo apt-get
install aptitude' then use 'sudo aptitude'. (Or it's possible with ftp and dpkg

[Bug 976415] [NEW] gnome-disk-utility has a missing item in the translation-template. Error message is not translated

2012-04-08 Thread Michael Basse
Public bug reported:

the LP-Translation page is showing that everything from gnome-disk-
utility is translated (for example german)

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/gnome-disk-
utility/+pots/gnome-disk-utility

But thereis one error-message when you start the read/write benchmark,
which is not translated

A partition table was detected - write benchmarking requires the disk
to be completely empty

So i guess there is something missing in the translation-template/po-
file.

[Bug 976412] [NEW] Graphical display only shows top half of screen

2012-04-08 Thread netbook
Public bug reported:

Display goes black right after boot. If ESC is pressed repeatedly it will show
the UBUNTU loading screen as per normal. Once it goes graphical though only the
top half of the screen is visible. See this thread for more information.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1953490

This happens in all versions including daily build up through
Apr/07/2012.

This applies to new, fresh installation to hard disk from USB or from
Liveboot, although Liveboot (Try Ubuntu option) does show fullscreen
properly.

I used the ubuntu-bug -w command to report this bug by clicking on the top half
of the desktop. The bottom half is of course not accessible.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

outdated debug symbol package for libv4l-0: package version 0.8.6-1ubuntu1
dbgsym version 0.8.5-3ubuntu2
outdated debug symbol package for upstart: package version 1.5-0ubuntu3 dbgsym
version 1.3-0ubuntu11

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Bug 962232] Re: Edit items in the Hardware section

2012-04-08 Thread Robert Roth
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 953215] Re: even if using unity, the system monitor says that I'm using gnome

2012-04-08 Thread Robert Roth
Unity is also using GNOME as the main display toolkit, so even if you
have not installed GNOME manually, unity depends on lots of gnome
packages. However, displaying the gnome foot logo could be changed to
display the Ubuntu logo, and maybe also adding the Unity version near
the gnome version line, something like Unity 5.6.0 with GNOME 3.4.0

[Bug 976483] [NEW] Nautilus contextual menu displays actions in disabled (grayed) even though they're active

2012-04-08 Thread hanynowsky
Public bug reported:

Nautilus contextual menu displays actions in disabled (grayed) even though
they're active.
This bug appears once in a session. I can't tell yet what triggers it.

- Open nautilus.
- View extra pane.

- Some actions like 'Copy to' or 'Move to' or 'Rename' are grayed, though,
they are clickable and the action is executed.

[Bug 975510] Re: Gedit initiates write by dconf-service when using Replace... dialog

2012-04-08 Thread EugeneI
Yes of course gedit stores recent searches.

But what bugs me:
1) we enter some text into search field
2) we hit find or replace button
3) text we entered gets added to recent searches in dconf database
4) we see this:
kernel: [11053.994218] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194707 (user) on sda6
kernel: [11053.994225] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194707 (user) on sda6
kernel: [11055.974400] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194738 (user.HFP9BW)
on sda6
kernel: [11055.974413] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194738 (user.HFP9BW)
on sda6
kernel: [11055.974509] dconf-service(1656): WRITE block 134749472 on sda6 (16
sectors)
5) we hit find or replace button another time (text in the search field is
the same)
6) we see this:
kernel: [11062.859499] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194737 (user.2QXUBW)
on sda6
kernel: [11062.859514] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194737 (user.2QXUBW)
on sda6
kernel: [11062.859614] dconf-service(1656): WRITE block 134749488 on sda6 (16
sectors)
7) we hit one of these buttons again; text in the search field is still the SAME
8) we again see write as in 6)
...
and so on.

We don't change text in search field but writes still occur on every
press of a find or replace and they may be noticed by hdd sound.

So situation in 1)-4) is perfectly normal - gedit stores newly entered search
string into dconf database.
But why writes occur in 5)-6) (and later)?

Sorry, for the delay.

I have forgotten to subscibe here, so I have not received your last

I have found a solution for magnetic harddrives in:

The entries in your kenel.logs are the same, so you should look if you
could connect your SSD with other/new cables.

[Bug 968383] Re: gnome-power-statistics shows info on first time launched from indicator-power, but not subsequent times

2012-04-08 Thread Eduardo Jose Moreira
I noticed that when I close gnome-power-statistics pressing Esc on the
keyboard, or just clicking the Close icon in the window decoration,
window closes but the process remains running.

On the other hand, when using the Close button at bottom-right in the
window, gnome-power-statistics window closes and process finishes as
well.

So gnome-power-statistics is only happy when closing it through its very
own Close button, sigh.

Using ubuntu 12.04 beta 2 now, fully updated.

[Bug 459763] [NEW] System Monitor window won't paint

2012-04-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

I did a fresh install of Karmic. Now when I select the System Monitor
tool in the Administration menu, I get a window that won't paint
correctly and is just a bunch of vertical and horizontal lines instead.

Because of performance issues, I reduced the Appearance - Visual
Effects to None so I assume that I'm running Metacity.

This bug was filed with ubuntu-bug but I'm not sure if it collected
driver information. If not, please let me know and I can provide any
additional information that's required. My video card is an old 32MB ATI
card and I'm not using any proprietary drivers.

I'm certain that this is not a problem exclusive to System Monitor. I
had a similar problem with Gnome Do. However, since the System Monitor
is part of the core system, is 100% repeatable, and I don't know where I
would otherwise file this bug, I chose to file against this package. If
the bug really needs to be filed under a different package, please do
so, this was just my best guess.

I'll be sure to attach a screenshot and my Xorg log file if I see that
it's not attached with ubuntu-bug.

Thanks!

[Bug 976530] Re: Evolution Contacts crashes on saving a new contact if the contact's email address has been cut-and-pasted in from elsewhere

2012-04-08 Thread Simon Morgan
Another possibility is that the bug seems to occur when the new contact
being added has the same email address as an existing contact, i.e.
where two separate contacts share the same email address. Maybe
Evolution does not allow this.

[Bug 894553] Re: Writing metadata to files... never finishes

2012-04-08 Thread Dmitry Kann
I haven't had this problem for quite a while, but after I added a bulk
of photos—it's here again. Very annoying, it causes the PC to endlessly
update the files.

Can this be addressed somehow?

[Bug 894553] Re: Writing metadata to files... never finishes

2012-04-08 Thread Adam Dingle
We're not able to reproduce this so it may be challenging to fix, but we
can look at the log file above and maybe that will give us some clues.
I've just targeted the upstream bug for the next release of Shotwell
(0.13). We'll see what we can do.

[Bug 894553] Re: Writing metadata to files... never finishes

2012-04-08 Thread Dmitry Kann
Thanks Adam, I also attach the most recent log, maybe it might help. By
the way, looks like *_modified files cause this behaviour. In the log
I see a lot of timer restarted events, like this:

L 30918 2012-04-08 15:53:22 [DBG] Photo.vala:3144: pipeline being run
against [11713] /home/dk/Pictures/Photos/2011/08/02/dsc05782.jpg
(/home/dk/Pictures/Photos/2011/08/02/dsc05782_modified.jpg), timer
restarted.

Can it be caused by file system notification on file change?

[Bug 894553] Re: Writing metadata to files... never finishes

2012-04-08 Thread Adam Dingle
Dmitry,

if this problem currently occurs every time you start Shotwell, could
you do the following?

1. Generate a log file following the steps in comment #3 above.
2. Look at the log file to see which photo(s) are being processed endlessly.
3. Send email to shotw...@yorba.org and attach your Shotwell database
(~/.shotwell/data/photo.db), the log file (~/.cache/shotwell/shotwell.log) and
the photo file(s) which are being processed over and over.

That should help us debug this. Thanks!

[Bug 885492] Re: p11-kit: couldn't load module: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so

2012-04-08 Thread xrdodrx
Oh, and I forgot to add in my previous comment that there doesn't seem
to be a gnome-keyring:i386 to get this to work right in Wine:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 gnome-keyring:i386 : Depends: libgck-1-0:i386 (= 2.91.1) but it is not going
to be installed
Depends: libgcr-3-1:i386 (= 3.2.2) but it is not going
to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I hope this gets fixed before Precise since it breaks countless Wine
packages.

[Bug 976608] [NEW] Terminal menu view|zoom in/out shows ctrl++/- shortcut but numeric keypad doesn't implement

2012-04-08 Thread JohnWashington
Public bug reported:

The menu for the terminal shows View|Zoom In and Out, with shortcuts
ctrl++ and ctrl+-. Using the numeric keypad for this doesn't work.
This is especially irritating for ctrl++, since on many keyboards this
requires a shift as well. Besides which, typical users are familiar
with using the numeric keypad for this in other applications, such as
Firefox.

Repro'd using 12.04 daily build 2012-04-07 i386 with a UK keyboard
layout. Also verified on 10.10 i386 using a US keyboard layout.
