[Bug 1033869] [NEW] Cannot select by clicking text in zenity --list -radiolist

2012-08-07 Thread era
Public bug reported:

The dialog box I get for this does not allow me to select an item by
clicking on it.

zenity --list --text Pick an Item --radiolist --column --column
Item TRUE One FALSE Two FALSE Three FALSE Four

If I want to select the item Two, I cannot click on the text label
Two; I have to hit the radio button to the left of it. This is
inconsistent with how radio buttons generally work, and might wreak
havoc (power user clicks and hits Enter, only to realize too late that
the click didn't do anything). (Oh, but Enter doesn't worjk as
expected, either. Still, a plausible scenario; click label, click OK.)

Besides the inconsistency and error scenario, it is also a usability
problem, because the active area you can click on is very small, which
will harm users who are not expert mouse operators.

[Bug 968268] Re: Cannot permanently add wallpaper to 'Pictures Folder'

2012-08-07 Thread Zeth
Is this the same bug?

Here is what I am doing:

Right-click on desktop select Change Desktop Background under the
Look tab select Wallpapers from the drop-down menu click on the
+ button to add new wallpapers to the selection browse to the
wallpaper and click open ...

What happens then is that the Wallpapers section changes to the
Pictures Folder section with the wallpaper being applied to the
desktop background - However when I close the Appearance dialog and
reopen it and go again to Pictures Folder my wallpaper is no longer
there!!

So ...
1. The Wallpaper should be added to the Wallpapers section and not to the
Pictures Folder and
2. The custom wallpaper should not disappear -- ever!

And, yes, this is a clean install not an upgrade ... and yes it's
occurring on other Ubuntu 12.04 machines as well - all of the 3 I have
here.

until the process gets an ENOMEM and exits and a new one is started in
it's place, only to fall victim to the same fate.

[Bug 1015370] Re: when opening a file using gedit, an unwanted blank document tab also opens

2012-08-07 Thread Gary M
I can reproduce this by running gksu gedit after pressing Alt-F2 from
an Ubuntu Studio session.

This opens gedit with an untitled document that is already flagged as modified.
Specifying a file with the gedit command opens that file as well as a modified
untitled document.

Running gksu gedit (or sudo gedit) from bash in the xfce terminal emulator
produces the expected behaviour:
an untitled document that is not yet flagged as modified.
Specifying a file with the gedit command from bash opens that file as well as
an unmodified untitled document. I expected only the file to be opened.

Running gedit from bash or Alt-F2 produces the expected behaviour:
an untitled document that is not yet flagged as modified.
Specifying a file with the gedit command just opens that file, as expected.

[Bug 1033904] Re: memory leak in gnome-keyring-daemon

2012-08-07 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Seriously. Are you folks really that bitter about this Mint thing? I
know you know that Mint is nothing more than Ubuntu Linux with usable
desktops (i.e. Cinnamon and MATE), for those people that find your
tablet-izing Unity desktop simply unusable.

Heck, Mint is not even a fork but simply a layer of packages on top of
Ubuntu Linux -- really, no different than installing a bunch of packages
out of a PPA. Do you simply refuse to support Ubuntu Linux packages
simply because a PPA may have installed some unrelated packages?

You can see clearly from the apport output that this report is for an
unmodified gnome-keyring package straight out of your own
repositories:

Package: gnome-keyring 3.2.2-2ubuntu4

apt-cache validates this assertion also:

$ apt-cache policy gnome-keyring
gnome-keyring:
  Installed: 3.2.2-2ubuntu4
  Candidate: 3.2.2-2ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 3.2.2-2ubuntu4 0
500 http://apt.interlinx.bc.ca/ubuntu/ precise/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So, are you really going to play this sour grapes game or are you going
to do the right thing here?

[Bug 1033904] Re: memory leak in gnome-keyring-daemon

2012-08-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
@Brian: no biterness there but we have too much to do and I'm not
interested to investigate what mint might or might not hack to our
packages, some replies though:

Heck, Mint is not even a fork but simply a layer of packages on top of
Ubuntu Linux -- really, no different than installing a bunch of packages
out of a PPA. Do you simply refuse to support Ubuntu Linux packages
simply because a PPA may have installed some unrelated packages?

We do reject report coming from ppa users (including the official GNOME3
ppa) yes, we don't have the resources to try to figure what might happen
with non supported combinaison

Mint also happen to do very hackish things (like patching files
installed by packages on boot from init script, that's how they change
their user agent in firefox for example to avoid repackaging it), we
know of a few hacks like that and I don't trust them to not create real
issues with those

If Mint was not a fork they would just package cinnamon and mate in a
ppa or in Ubuntu universe and create an Ubuntu flavor for it the way
Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu etc are doing, you liking it or not what they
are doing is forking the distribution rather than collaborating with us.

You can see clearly from the apport output that this report is for an

modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.secrets.desktop.txt

those are modified conffiles

So, are you really going to play this sour grapes game or are you
going to do the right thing here?

Depends what you call the right thing, I'm going to focus on supporting

[Bug 868400] Re: Synaptics touchpad stops working - two syndaemon instances running

2012-08-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
James, Anthony: do you really need those fixes to land in the official
archive? Our resources are limited and at this point we need to focus on
precise LTS and quantal rather than Oneiric, having to build and test
all those Oneiric backports has a cost. I'm keeping the bug open in case
somebody is still interested to sponsor Oneiric updates but I can't
justify spending extra time helping on those myself, I would recommend
you consider updating to the LTS or building your own overlay ppa with
the fixes you need for that project.

But you know, just like you do with your ubuntu package postfix, they
postfix the packages they modify with linuxmint such as:

ii plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu28-1linuxmint2 graphical boot animation ...

And doubly so, I also demonstrated for you that this package is a Ubuntu

Did you miss the part above where I said in relation to PPAs unrelated
packages. Of course I don't expect you to look at packages that come
form PPAs and I never insinuated that I do. I clearly said unrelated
packages.

Mint also happen to do very hackish things (like patching files
installed by packages on boot from init script, that's how they change
their user agent in firefox for example to avoid repackaging it), we

 issues with those

Do you really think they are doing something like that with
gnome-keyring-daemon? Or is this just an excuse?

If Mint was not a fork

They are not a fork. Must of what is in a Mint installation comes
directly from Ubuntu repositories.

they would just package cinnamon and mate in a
ppa or in Ubuntu universe and create an Ubuntu flavor for it the way
Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu etc are doing, you liking it or not what they
are doing is forking the distribution rather than collaborating with us.

Really though, how is them adding a repository for their packages,
layering on top of Ubuntu any different than adding a PPA anyway. Sure,
they might have decided to put a bunch more polish and marketing around
it, but surely you cannot really say that the additional mint repository
that one adds to Ubuntu to get mint is really any different than adding
a PPA.

You can see clearly from the apport output that this report is for an
unmodified gnome-keyring package straight out of your own repositories:

 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.secrets.desktop.txt
 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.ssh.desktop.txt

Those are configuration files. So any package in a Ubuntu installation
with modified configuration files is automatically Invalid?

 those are modified conffiles

Yes. conffiles. conffiles are meant to be modified. That's the
*entire* point of them being conffiles.

Depends what you call the right thing, I'm going to focus on supporting
Ubuntu users and let the Mint team supports their users, it seems only
fair? Why would forking and not assuming the responsability which come
 with the fork be right?

Because you know in all honesty that this is a bona fide Ubuntu package
that has a defect in it and the Mint thing really has nothing to do with
it. It's just a convenient reason to close a bug report without
actually doing anything.

[Bug 1033904] Re: memory leak in gnome-keyring-daemon

2012-08-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
@Brian: sorry but I don't want to turn that bug report into an
argumentation, in all fairness if there is an issue it's probably an
upstream GNOME one in any case rather than a MInt or Ubuntu one so it
might be better to directly report it to GNOME

To give a short reply to your comments: I've too much to do and enough
bugs that are clearly Ubuntu ones, I'm not interested in going out of my
way to support users of a distribution that doesn't contribute back any
fixes to their upstreams nor support their users directly. (Ubuntu is
not perfect but we do handle bugs from our users and don't send them to
Debian directly and we do send patches back to Debian)

It's just a convenient reason to close a bug report without actually
doing anything.

I don't need a convenient reason to, we receive bugs in a magnitude
order over what we can deal with, so 90% of the bugs get triaged and sit
there (or don't get triaged at all), this bug is just one of those we
don't have time (nor people knowing that codebase) to take care of it.

My position remain though that I will focus on Ubuntu users and I don't
intend to get out of my way to support Mint or their users until they
start being good citizen and engage with us at least to let us know what
changes they are doing to our packages (that informations is pretty hard
to find, it took us a while to figure how they change the firefox user
agent string for example) and start contributing some of their fixes
back to Ubuntu (or work with us to get their issues resolved at the
right place)

[Bug 408903] Re: Does not handle microphone mute button (KEY_MICMUTE)

2012-08-07 Thread James M. Leddy
Okay, I've created some test packages. Please keep in mind these are
only test packages, I haven't even sent upstream yet. To get around the
complications with keycodes over 248 I've remapped to the F20 key, which
most keyboards don't have. We've been using the Function keys for this
purpose for a while now, for example, touchpadtoggle events are F21.

Please let me know if there are any dependencies missing. These packages
were compiled on Precise, and it is very likely they will be overwritten
by a future sru:

http://people.canonical.com/~jmleddy/micmute/

You can see what it looks like here:

http://people.canonical.com/~jmleddy/micmute/2012-08-07-132202_1366x768_scrot.png

All the source is in my source directory under the name micmute:

[Bug 1034080] [NEW] no About menu item

2012-08-07 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

In Quantal, there is no About item in the Nautilus menu, so it's hard to
tell what version of Nautilus I'm running.

In upstream Nautilus from GNOME there is an About menu item, which
appears in the app menu. Ubuntu does not display this menu, so I have
no way to get to this command.

[Bug 1034090] [NEW] Hotkeys not functional after upgrade to quantal

2012-08-07 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10, none of the hotkeys/media keys on
my keyboard are no longer functional. Specifically, the brightness
up/dn, volume up/dn/mute, keyboard backlight up/dn/off keys and the
media control keys (rew/play/ff) don't work perform the expected
functions.

I've confirmed that the underlying functionality works- for example I can
adjust the keyboard backlight from the command line via:
`echo 0 /sys/class/leds/smc\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness`

Machine is a MacbookPro 3,1 with an external Apple USB keyboard. Hotkeys
are non-functional on both the internal and external keyboards.

To reproduce:
1) Press the volume mute hotkey

Expected results:
Mute is toggled, and the indicator + OSD are displayed reflecting the new
volume state

Actual results:
Nothing happens

xev (run from gnome terminal) reports the following when I press the
volume mute hotkey:

[Bug 1034080] Re: no About menu item

2012-08-07 Thread Adam Dingle
That's interesting to hear. If Quantal goes back to Nautilus 3.4, will
Ubuntu plan to update to later versions of Nautilus in the future, or
will it just stay at 3.4 indefinitely (which would be a fork,
essentially)?

[Bug 986269] [NEW] Unable to open a folder for 10 GB Filesystem, No application is registered as handling this file... or Nautilus pops browser when partition is mounted in bash script

2012-08-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I first noticed this behaviour in Ubuntu 11.10. When I run my bash
script that mounts partitions on my hard drive (e.g /dev/sda5), Nautilus
pops up with a browser window. This is an illogical action, since I've
not 'inserted a drive', it's already there, and it's just been manually
mounted. This Nautilus action will interfere with the scripts operation
since, when the script tries to unmount the drive (rapidly) it finds
that Nautilus is still busy with it, producing it's browser window.

If I run chmod 700 on the mountpoint prior to mounting (root only
access), then I get a popup message stating: Unable to open a folder
for 10 GB Filesystem, No application is registered as handling this
file. This is because the mountpoint is not accessible to the logged in
user.

You wouldn't expect this if you mount a partition from the terminal -
and for the most part this is correct (Nautilus does nothing), but not
all the time. I've managed to trigger Nautilus to pop just with a simple
terminal mount.

I have a workaround in my bash script that creates a udev rule and runs
udevadm trigger to hide the partition, but this seems extreme. I believe
it's a bug in Unity(?) (maybe Nautilus?) in how it responds to the
signal that a partition has been mounted.

Please see this for complete details and discussion of possible
solutions (and the bash script code):
http://askubuntu.com/questions/121569/prevent-nautilus-showing-
partition-mounted-in-bash-script

I understand you can prevent Nautilus responding to inserted drives
etc., but this is definitely not the case here - the drive is already
there, just the partition is being mounted.

[Bug 1034080] Re: no About menu item

2012-08-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I'm not sure yet, I'm leaning toward shipping both version in the
archive for quantal with 3.4 on the CD and discussing at UDS the way
forward based on the feedback nautilus 3.6 and other filemanagers got.

Looking around us elementary os has its own filemanager (marlin,
written in vala), mint just started their own project nemo which is
a fork of nautilus 3.4 ... we might decide to follow GNOME, try joining
efforts with the marlin or nemo team to maintain a full featured file
manager or maintain our own filemanager (less likely at this point,
that's not a topic which was raised before)
