[Bug 844081] Re: Unity Greeter - Background of the Unity Greeter should reflect the background chosen by the user that is currently selected

2012-10-23 Thread yman
I'd be concerned that a user might choose an inappropriate desktop
wallpaper and I'd have no way to prevent it from being displayed to
everyone who uses the computer, so as admin I'd want to be able to
switch off the feature of showing the selected user's wallpaper on
LightDM and instead only show the same wallpaper for everybody. What
people put as the wallpaper on their own account is up to them, but the
login screen is a shared space.

Aside from that, as someone who isn't admin I might not want to show everyone
my wallpaper. For instance, I use a wallpaper of Humble Indie Bundle 5 which
seems childish for my age. I might not want others to see it when they come to
use the computer. Now that I've read some of the comment section I know I can
hide it with file permissions, but I wouldn't have thought of that on my own
even after using Ubuntu for over 6 years. It makes much more sense in terms of
organization, intuitiveness, and respecting user's privacy (which I thought
Ubuntu was trying to champion) to make it a switch in the Appearance panel:
[X] Show my wallpaper on the log in screen

Which behind the scenes just changes the permissions on the file as
described by others. No fancy stuff.

[Bug 36812]

2012-10-23 Thread Bas-bmail
(In reply to comment #112)
I believe the most serious objection with this request is that it violates
the XKB specification (see the description of SA_LockGroup in section 6.3 of
The X Keyboard Extension: Protocol Specification).

In the same specification, in section 4.0 of appendix D (Protocol
Encoding), we see in the description of SA_LockGroup that there are still 5
unused bits in the flags field. My proposal in to use one of these bits
decide whether to lock groups on press or release. By default (bit is
zero), lock groups on press as the protocol specification demands. If the
flag is one, lock groups on release. So by default, we would conform to the
specification, and add the alternative behaviour as a new possibility beyond
 the specification.

There are some usage implications. One must use 'Private' do create actions
with the new flag set (until xkbcomp is updated as well), and one needs
support in xkeyboard-config to make the new feature usable for
 non-XKB-hackers.

Thanks Andreas, your answer pretty much clarifies everything for me!

Your proposal is very correct, no doubt. Does it mean that once your
proposal is implemented all 3rd-party keyboard switchers (like those in
Gnome and KDE) would have to be updated to make use of this new
possibility?

Anyway, as i see it, there are two ways to go:
1) The long way - making things right and according to specification. This
would take from very long to forever (this is the way we've been going for the
last 8 years with this bug report).
2) Take a short way - let the common sense win over specification and make
everybody happy.

 (In reply to comment #108)
  Looks like everything has
been fixed. But if you use Ctrl or Alt for layout switching you still can't
use this key for anything more, it's exclusived :( So ridiculous.

It shouldn't work like that - I've tested the Ubuntu built X.org (with
Ilya's patch) and it worked properly when using CTRL+ALT as the keyboard
switching. It was immediately after the patch got accepted (at 11.04) but as
 ALT+SHIFT still works fine, I don't see a reason everything shouldn't
continue to work (though I don't have access to an Ubuntu machine ATM to
 test).

Oded Arbel, I repeat: Ctrl OR Alt. OR, not AND. I use right Alt for
layout switching so I can't use it for any other purpose.

[Bug 36812]

2012-10-23 Thread Wettstein509
Your proposal is very correct, no doubt. Does it mean that once your
proposal is implemented all 3rd-party keyboard switchers (like those in
Gnome and KDE) would have to be updated to make use of this new possibility?

As far as I understand, KDE and Gnome all use xkeyboard-config, and just
provide their own GUI. If this is understanding is correct, the changes
to xkeyboard-config would be sufficient.

Anyway, as i see it, there are two ways to go:
 1) The long way - making things right and according to specification. This
would take from very long to forever (this is the way we've been going for
the last 8 years with this bug report).

Assuming the existing patch is correct, adding the additional check for
the flag is just a few lines. The changes to xkeyboard-config would be
fairly simple. Assuming we grab bit 3 for the new flag, in xkeyboard-
config/compat/iso9995, change the current definition:

  interpret ISO_Next_Group {
  useModMapMods= level1;
  virtualModifier= AltGr;
  action= LockGroup(group=+1);
  }

to

  interpret ISO_Next_Group {
  useModMapMods= level1;
  virtualModifier= AltGr;
  action= Private(type=6, data[0]=16, data[1]=1);
  }

(untested, of course), and similarly for ISO_Prev_Group,
ISO_First_Group, and ISO_Last_Group. I do not know wether the action
bound to keysyms is standardised; even if it is not, it might be a good
idea to make the above redefinition conditional.

 2) Take a short way - let the common sense win over specification and make
 everybody happy.

Believe it or not, I would be unhappy when the specification would be
broken. Also remember that the attitudes in this discussion are not
necessarily representative of all X users, as the users satisfied with
the current behaviour do not have any reason to even know about this
discussion.

The modem works fine. But that was never in doubt.

The problem is that on Gnome Remix, ModemManager doesn't open the Network
Configuration application when an unconfigured modem is connected to the
system, whereas it does on Unity (and Gnome 3 on Fedora 17).

Therefore, this shouldn't be closed in my humble opinion.

[Bug 1070032] Re: Bad French translation in Nautilus

2012-10-23 Thread Alexandre Franke
Cette chaîne n'est pas présente dans le po amont de Nautilus (j'ai
vérifié dans master qui est la future 3.8 et dans 3.4).

À vue de nez, je dirais que ça vient plutôt de DéjàDup.

[Bug 1070260] [NEW] Closing gnome-power-statistics window with Alt-F4 leaves the process running

2012-10-23 Thread Marius Gedminas
Public bug reported:

1. Launch gnome-power-statistics
2. Press Alt-F4 to close the window
3. Launch gnome-power-statistics again

What you get is a blank window with no buttons or other controls.

What I expect to get is a normal window with everything.

Some investigation (launching gnome-power-statistics from a terminal)
show that if I close the window by clicking the 'Close' button, the
process exits, but if I close the window by pressing Alt-F4, the process
stays running.

Workaround: if you closed the window with Alt-F4, you have to killall
gnome-power-sta to make it work when launched again.

[Bug 1069184] Re: wrong information about the diskspace in the gnome-control-center

2012-10-23 Thread disto2
I have some more information for you regarding to the bug.
Maybe that's important for you.
Although the home partition is located on sda2,
my folders like pictures, videos, documents etc. are outsourced to sdc2.
I've done this by mounting it with the bind option in \etc\fstab.
The real destiniation of /home/user/pictures is /mnt/daten/user/pictures

I've done this, because the sda is a fast SSD with only 64 GB of space.
The sdc is a slower HDD but has 500 GB of diskspace.

best regards

dirk

[Bug 1070285] [NEW] Metacity keyboard shortcuts work intermediately

2012-10-23 Thread david kochner
Public bug reported:

Hello.
I am not sure if Metacity is indeed the culrpit here, but this doesn't happen
with compiz so I assume it is.

When I configure a custom shortcut to exectute a command (for example: xterm
with alt+x), Pressing alt+x doesn't always work and when it does work it
normally requires quite a long press.
This is very different than the behaviour in gnome/metacity up to Ubuntu 11.04
which executed my configured application the moment I pressed the key
combination.
In ubuntu 12.04 I managed to work around it by changing the default terminal to
xterm and setting the launch terminal shortcut to alt-x, other keyboard
shortcuts I had were still sluggish but at least my run terminal shortcut
worked.
In ubuntu 12.10 it stays sluggish no matter what I do and in many cases it
simply misses my alt+x keypress

The odd part is that any other shortcut I set (changing window size,
etc...) works fine in a snap, only applications executions are running
slow.

Basically it used to launch in a snap and now it simply doesn't.
Happens on any installation I have (about 5 different machines, one freshly
installed in a VM just to see that it's not an upgrade issue).

I tried it with a new fresh user just to make sure I don't have old
configurations that conflict with it and it is still sluggish.

Not a critical bug but it is a very annoying regression.

Thanks,
Dave.

[Bug 1070004] [NEW] For applications using simplified save dialogues, selecting a destionation through Other... saves to /HOME directory

2012-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Certain applications, like DeVeDe or Openshot, use a simplified save
dialogue box. From these simplified lists, the user is presented with
some default directories to save in (Video, Desktop, Home, etc).
Selecting any of these destinations from this menu works as expected.
However, if the user wishes to save to some other location besides the
ones suggested, they must click on Other... which displays the full,
normal save dialogue. When this is used, it does not matter which
directory the user chooses - the application will save to the /HOME
directory.

I have tested this using DeVeDe on Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit (fresh install)
and 12.10 32-bit (upgrade install). This *is not* a bug with DeVeDe, but
it was the first application I found that was using the simplified save
dialogue (and I also was able to reproduce this using Openshot, which
does the same thing). If the application uses the normal save dialogue
box, everything works as expected.

Please help me provide the information needed for this bug report. I do
not know what package to file this against, or what other information
that needs to be attached. It would also be helpful if someone can
reproduce this. I have not filed a bug report because I did not know
what to attach or what package to file against. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Here is a video demonstrating the problem using DeVeDe. I tell DeVeDe to
export a video to my Desktop from the defaults menu, which works as
expected. I then tell it to save it to my Desktop, but using the
Other... menu. I would expect it to say that there's a file already

[Bug 841409] Re: GEdit is the only choice as Calendar application in Default Applications dialog

2012-10-23 Thread Robert Lange
For those who do not wish to wait for a patch to fix this, you can add
the following line to the [Default Applications] section of the file
$HOME/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list:

text/calendar=thunderbird.desktop

I also added the same line to the [Added Associations] section, but I am
not sure if that is necessary.

Once you do this, Thunderbird becomes a recommended application for that
file type, and shows up in the list. If the Google Calendar app, or any
other calendar app has a .desktop file, you can do the same for that
app.

[Bug 1070377] [NEW] Empathy change to Online Accounts no longer supports SIPE

2012-10-23 Thread SeanK
Public bug reported:

Many of us use SIPE as way a way to use Microsoft Communicator/Lync in
order to IM with workplaces. Empathy used to allow for SIPE
connections through the pidgin-sipe package but since I switched to
12.10 and online accounts functionality, I can no longer find a way to
do so.

While I can still use SIPE in pidgin, pidgin no longer integrates into
the Unity notification system.

In either case, it means that I no longer get notifications when people
at work IM me. As such, the new version of Ubuntu has greatly
diminished my ability to use Linux at my workplace.

A way to use SIPE (or any previously supported account type not
supported by Online Accounts) in Empathy -- even if it requires a non--
pretty command line/config change -- would be very welcome.

Additionally, I'm not sure what to make of this, could you provide a

[Bug 1069775] Re: evolution locks up

2012-10-23 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Doesn't seem to be the same issue though; if operations stay in
cancelling but the rest of the UI is usable, whereas the original
reporter seems to indicate that none of the UI is responsive.

What is happening at the time? Are you doing specific actions in
Evolution when the freeze happens, or doing it happen by itself when
evolution is in the background?

[Bug 1069775] Re: evolution locks up

2012-10-23 Thread Brandon Ingalls
When evolution starts to lock up I can click on other messages or
folders but it will not load the contents of either. I think it may have
something to do with the IMAP account I use for school. Then in one of
the tasks I get Unknown background task. When I then try to exit out
of the program everything locks up and I have to kill it.

Next time it happens I will attach a picture.

[Bug 952108] Re: [Precise] Nautilus: memory leak

2012-10-23 Thread Jan Claeys
I'm also seeing this bug on Precise 64-bit, but for me Nautilus grows to
eat several GiB of RAM (that's RSS, sometimes up to 8 GiB of VIRT)
before I (have to) kill it...

Just like the original reporter, some Nautilus windows/tabs might show
directories with a lot (thousands) of files and/or subdirectories in
them, sometimes with the subdirectories opened so that their contents
are also visible (sometimes several levels deep), and there can be
changes (either as a result of actions in other Nautilus windows/tabs,
or by other programs) that Nautilus has to update its view for. I
suppose that lots of directory entries and/or frequent updates would
make the impact of memory leaks in certain code paths more visible...

I usually have about 2-5 Nautilus windows and maybe a total of 10 tabs
in them open, but I don't often open/close new tabs or windows.

I also tried this with a system that had no custom nautilus extensions
(so only what is installed by default, plus even some of those
uninstalled), but that didn't solve the problem.

[Bug 1069775] Re: evolution locks up

2012-10-23 Thread Romano Giannetti
It happens the same to me. Basically, the UI *seems* to be usable, but
when you click nothing happens (at most you have another tab doing
something that will never finish at the bottom). When you try to exit,
the UI grays out, and then nothing works.

I have not tried to let evolution in that state all night, for example.
Maybe is just something interlocking so that it's extremely slow...

Seems a lock problem. I have sometime a strange similar thing; one tab
seems to stay forever saying pinging server at (whatever) and all is
blocked. Fortunately that kind of thing *do* timeout after 10-20
seconds, and evolution resumes happily with just an error. Could this
help to shed some light?

[Bug 1070468] [NEW] Brightness slider does not respond to brightness changes

2012-10-23 Thread Davi da Silva Böger
Public bug reported:

The slider in the Brightness and Lock settings panel does not respond
to brightness changes by keyboard hotkeys.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open Brightness and Lock from the control center
2) Change the brightness witht he keyboard hotkeys
3) See that the brightness slider does not change

I read the similar (fixed) bug #893851 and I saw the attached patch that
updated the DBus interface. Now it seems the signal is not reaching the
UI for some reason. If I run dbus-monitor type=signal and set the
brightness up and down with the keyboard, the following output shows:

signal sender=:1.9 - dest=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon serial=289
path=/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power;
interface=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen; member=Changed
signal sender=:1.9 - dest=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon serial=295
path=/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power;
interface=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen; member=Changed

This seems to imply the signals are issued but does not reach the UI.
