[Bug 124440] Re: Ubuntu needs a way to set mouse scrolling speed

2013-01-29 Thread cmavr8
Yorick, I completely agree with you.

I wonder which is the correct way to try to elevate this issue and let
devs know it's important. Should I refer people affected to this bug and
have them subscribe? Or should we open an idea at
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com and vote there?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a

[Bug 120258] Re: Laptop Battery Time Remaining Outrageously Inaccurate

2013-01-29 Thread Dmitry Diskin
Does this post show some hint for this bug:
http://forum.eeeuser.com/index.php?/topic/81732-battery-measurements-
are-wrong-eeepc-900-ubuntu-1004/page__view__findpost__p__710079 ?

Quote:
This is a problem with the way the battery reports its charging state. The
ubuntu applet (and the rest of the system, down to the kernel) expects the
charge to be reported in mAh but instead the battery itself reports a
percentage. If you look at state and info in /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/, you'll
find that a fully charged battery reports a charge of 100 mAh ... with a
(reported) design capacity of 5200 mAh this works out to 1.9 %.

[Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmbox sort by Album Artist for guest/compilations

2013-01-29 Thread PnG
It seems that the people from GNOME are not interested in implementing
this feature. They ignore all the bugreports for several years now
although this can't be very difficult to implement.

About half a year ago someone submittet a patch that looks interesting
but until now nothing had changed.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=678706

Perhaps someone from Ubuntu could have a look at it and apply it for the
Ubuntu users if it works.

[Bug 1108977] [NEW] Videos is a very confusing name for a video player

2013-01-29 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Ringtail daily 20130128

1. Right-click on a video file in the file manager.
2. After opening the file, choose Help About.

What you see:
1. Open With Videos
2. Videos Videos Totem Website.

What's wrong with this:
1. Open a video with videos? That doesn't make any sense. I have a Videos
folder, but this video is not in that folder.
2. The window is titled About Videos, but doesn't tell me anything about
videos. And then a wild Totem appears.

This is a regression: In Ubuntu 12.10 and earlier, the program was
called Movie Player, which was pretty accurate.

As a workaround, there is another terminal emulator called 'terminator' that is

suffer from this problem. Basically, it's the same as gnome-terminal, but with
many more advanced features.

2013-01-29 Thread Matt Hellige
#12 is incorrect. AFAICS, this is actually a libvte bug and all libvte-
based terminals suffer from this issue on my 12.04 machine. I've used
gnome-terminal, terminator, sakura, and I think evilvte and lilyterm as
well.

FWIW, I haven't yet tried 12.10.

It's correct on 12.10.

This is the version of terminator on my system:

marwan@host:~$ terminator --version
terminator 0.96

Actually, I had installed terminator out of frustration with this bug almost a
month ago, and it hasn't shown any sign for this issue since then. That's why I
stayed with it.

May be you're using a version less than 0.96 where this issued apparently got
fixed.

[Bug 1108104] Re: [raring] Portable Players - MTP Rhythmbox plugin not working, can't sync music with Android device

2013-01-29 Thread Philip Langdale
This has always been a problem. You can't have two MTP clients talking
to one device at the same time. Rhythmbox tries to talk directly at the
same time as gvfs and two stomp on each other. It was hard to notice
before because gvfs would simply fail to connect at all using the
gphoto2 backend, and rhythmbox will fail too as it doesn't use the mtp
API in an android-safe way either.

[Bug 1104798] Re: Keyboard shortcut for search has changed.

2013-01-29 Thread Anton Schleef
Well, I found out what happened, as I stumbled upon both the problem and
the fix just a couple minutes ago. Apparently gedit lets you edit what
the keyboard shortcuts for commands are, and the help files doesn't say
a thing about it (I did look for such a feature, and I didn't find it).
How you do that is if you hold Alt+'underlined letter of menu' (F for
File, E for Edit, V for View, S for Search, T for Tools, D for
Documents, and H for Help) it opens the menu and then you can either
press the underlined letter for the specific command you want or use the
arrow keys to navigate through the menus. If you have a command
highlighted you can press 'Backspace' to erase the existing keyboard
shortcut (if it has one) and then you can input a new keyboard shortcut
for it. I was just doing some rapid fire pasting (Yes, I still use the
alt shortcuts for that rather than the others.) and hit 'Backspace'
twice before 'Escape' to exit it and then a bit later noticed I'd
inadvertently erased and changed the shortcut.

Good news, it isn't a bug, but an undocumented feature that caused the
problem. Bad news, despite the rather long list of people watching this
bug I accidentally found the fix myself, and what exactly was happening,
before anyone who might be involved in creating updates for gedit was
able to post what the problem was.

As a moderate request, could it get expedited that the feature gets
added to gedit's offline help files? I don't know if it'll make a
difference for anyone else, but I doubt it could hurt.

[Bug 1108637] Re: backspace key no longer works in nautilus

2013-01-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Firefox on Linux also uses Alt+← to go back instead of Backspace. It has
the advantage of symmetry with Alt + → for Forward and prevents
accidentally going Back a page when all you intended to do was delete
the previous character in a form but your focus was on the wrong spot.

With Nautilus 3.6's quick search I think it would be a bit more
difficult to have Backspace do two different actions (which is itself
non-intuitive).

[Bug 1108637] Re: backspace key no longer works in nautilus

2013-01-29 Thread Rocko
Hmm. I also set my Firefox and chrome up to match their default
configuration on all other OS's, ie so that backspace works as the back
key (in FF it's just setting browser.backspace_action = 0, but in chrome
you need a plugin). I just find it much more convenient than having to
search for two keys to press.

My guess is that upstream will say the same thing regarding the
backspace key - that it doesn't mesh nicely with the way quick search is
implemented when you go back - but IMO it's a real pity they've done it
this way, as I find it much slower to use nautilus now, both in that
that 'back' takes you into the previous quick search, which you then
have to cancel to see the whole contents of the folder, and in that
backspace doesn't do anything any more. (And in that you can't right-
click off away from file name to get the 'New Folder' context menu,
which was something they introduced in nautilus 3.4 as an improvement
and have now taken away again.)

Of course, a good solution would be to make all this configurable - but
this doesn't match gnome's philosophy of reducing configuration and
usability :) wherever possible.

As a workaround, Dolphin supports backspace to go back and is generally
a much better file manager than nautilus, both in usability and in
number of features. (It's just a pity that kioclient isn't as capable as
the gvfs tools for when you're trying to integrate scripts with a GUI
file manager.)

[Bug 1010349] Re: Evolution address book inaccessible without killing one time e-addressbook-factory

2013-01-29 Thread John Bester
I have had this problem for some time using Thunderbird. I have a
Google addressbook that I cannot remember creating. After reading
these posts (especially killing e-addressbook-factory) I seemed to have
solved it for me (a Thunderbird user). The Google address book dates
back to the time I used evolution. So here is what I understand of the
problem:

The Google address book would always be empty (after opening
Thunderbird and getting the message). But I could not delete it. After
killing e-addressbook-factory and re-opening Thunderbird, the message
was gone and the Google address book was filled. I could still not
delete it though, because Thunderbird does not allow deleting a gnome-
contacts folder (short version of message after trying to delete it).

Even though I am not using evolution any more and have uninstalled it,
evolution-data-server (package) was still installed and the gnome-
contacts depends on it. However, I have always used Thunderbird for my
contacts, so uninstalling evolution-data-server together with gnome-
contacts would not seem to affect me.

So how do I sync contacts with Google? Simple - I use Zindus Thunderbird
plugin (and have been since I installed Thunderbird). This allows you to
pick an addressbook to sync - in my case Personal Address Book. So I
really do not need to have a Google address book in any case.
