[Bug 250517] Re: gvfs performs slowly on bulk sftp transfers

2013-06-11 Thread Anton
The problem still exists in precise (12.04), that is more than 5 years
after it was first reported both here (ubuntu/gvfs, but also in
nautilus), and at gnome/gvfs. How come no progress *at all* has been
made here? Is there any channel that we could use to draw attention to
this serious performance issue?

Or, alternatively, any pointers to how to hot-wire some workaround in
the gvfs code that may fix this?

[Bug 1189843] [NEW] Rotated pages are incorrectly printed when multiple pages per side are printed

2013-06-11 Thread Karl Kastner
Public bug reported:

I have a large document where most pages are portrait oriented but some
pages with figures are landscape oriented to ease on screen reading.
When that document is printed out with the option to print two pages per
side, then the pages in ladscape orientation are printed incorrectly.
One half of the pages is cut off and the printed half is in the wrong
location. This is already visible in the print preview. It could be
fixed by letting evince rotate all pages into the same orientation
before printing or by shrinking the rotated pages. Printing works fine
with Acrobat reader, which shrinks the rotated pages.

[Bug 1185904] Re: No description in list of startup applications

2013-06-11 Thread Richard Boudreau
Further investigation indicates gnome-session-properties (from gnome-
session-bin) attempts to display startup applications using the
'Comment' field of the nautilus-autostart.desktop file, which contains
no Comment descriptor. The fix for this is to add the 'Comment' line in
the nautilus-autostart.desktop file so it is displayed properly by
gnome-session-properties. This also applies to a number of other
.desktop files in the /etc/xdg/autostart directory.

So this bug should be posted against the 'nautilus' package that
contains the nautilus-autostart.desktop file. The same applies to a
number of other packages such as ubuntuone, orca, gnome-settings-daemon,
onboard, AT-SPI DBUS-1 Dbus, etc

[Bug 1163107] Re: Wacom calibration results are off (wrong area)

2013-06-11 Thread Josh Berry
Looks like if you want to save the settings stored by the calibration
tool, you simply need to use the dconf tool and search for wacom. One
of the items directly under wacom has the key of area. Simply set
that to what you would get with:

xsetwacom --get ... area

I am more than interested in trying to dig into the code. I believe I
have it checked out correctly, though I am not clear on the process for
testing my changes. Has this already been solved by anyone else?

[Bug 974963] Re: [soundnua]: hdmi audio missing in sound settings

2013-06-11 Thread r0bb3d
Have the same problem on Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity. Sometimes when I plug
in my HDMI TV to my Dell laptop the audio will not work, the HDMI audio
device is not present in Unity, Pulse says available: no. This could
be connected to hibernation, but I'm not 100% sure. A reboot always
solves the problem, but that is a very bad option for me.

Just for anyone who wants this solved quickly in a simple way:

Write a script that uses xrandr to check whether the TV is connected.
Then have it check pacmd list-cards under ports whether the HDMI
output is available: yes. If the TV monitor is detected with xrandr,
but the HDMI output (sound) is not available, have it run killall
pulseaudio. I have this in a loop, causes very little resources, but is
a (admittedly dirty) pragmatic fix for the problem.

[Bug 1189847] Re: OpenGL Error - This window tried to create an absurdly large window 1902 x 30383

2013-06-11 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
See if you can change the default size with dconf-editor. Use these commands:
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
dconf-editor

Once dconf-editor is open, navigate to /org/gnome/evolution/shell/window
There, you should see settings for height and width. If they're 1902x30383,
modify them to some sane value (480x640).

2013-06-11 Thread Steve Langasek
It can't be SRUed. With the old pango, plymouth needs to
unconditionally copy the modules. With the new pango, plymouth needs to
never copy the modules. I thought this was being addressed by having
the new libpango-1.0-0 declare a Breaks: on the old plymouth, but that
doesn't seem to be the case.

And thinking about it, I believe we need a versioned Conflicts:, not a
versioned Breaks:, to ensure unpack order.

So, reopening and reassigning this bug to pango1.0.

[Bug 1190018] [NEW] Shotwell shouldn't hard-depend on UOA

2013-06-11 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu GNOME would like to not have Ubuntu Online Accounts installed by
default as it depends on quite a few Qt libraries and the presence of
two Online Accounts panels in System Settings confuses users.

I looked into splitting Shotwell's UOA support into a separate package,
but 06_uoa.patch has extended Shotwell's publishing plugin instead of
writing a separate one.

This means that shotwell-publishing.so depends on libsignon-glib1 which
depends on signond and basically the rest of the UOA infrastructure.

I tried moving the complete publishing plugin (including upstream and
Ubuntu services) into a separate package. However users who don't have
this package installed will have a broken Publish menu item.

Ideally, users should be able to benefit from publishing to online
services without needing to have Ubuntu Online Accounts infrastructure
installed (as released by Shotwell developers).

Bzr branch attached with my packaging attempts.

2013-06-11 Thread Jim Nelson
This has been a sore spot for us (well, maybe me in particular) for some
time now. I would very much like for Shotwell (and Geary, incidentally)
to be able to interoperate with whatever online account manager(s) the
user has installed. My rant is here: http://blog.yorba.org/jim/2013/02

[Bug 962369] Re: Cannot set Device name (hostname) under Details section in System Settings on 12.04

2013-06-11 Thread Henry Lin
Appending the content of Bug #1190048 here, ignore me if its not useful
1. I expected there's a pre-installed GUI utility in Ubuntu to change hostname.
2. I expected it appears in GNOME Control Center(a.k.a. System Settings) -
Details - Device name textbox
* In fact there's really a textbox at the location but is not editable
and there's no Unlock button at that view.
3. I expected if I run GNOME Control Center as root (gksudo
gnome-control-center) I can change my hostname
* In fact when GNOME Control Center run as root, the textbox really
turn's into editable, but edit the content still won't apply to the system
temporarily nor permanently.
4. I supposed there's many user having the same conclusion like me, so please

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-06-11 Thread Justin Force
The new behavior is INFURIATING. And the search functionality is
terrible. Even if it were fast (and it's terribly slow on my Core i7 and
Intel SSD), it's stupid. I'm a software developer. When I type 'lib', I
want to jump to the lib directory that I'm looking at--not find every
directory and file with lib in it recursively. That's insane! And
there's a well-established UX for this already: indicate that you want
to perform a search by pressing Ctrl-F, F3, or whatever.

This change has made it virtually impossible to navigate Nautilus
without a mouse, and so Nautilus is now completely useless to me. HUGE
step backward.

I realize that GNOME is doing weird things with Nautilus 3.6, and that
the version shipping with Ubuntu is a best effort by Canonical, the
Ubuntu community, and friends to maintain sanity. I don't mean to
criticize the folks who are doing the best they can. I just want
adequately register my frustration here. My Ubuntu desktop experience is
seriously hampered as Nautilus is completely useless to me now. It's
much more efficient to do all file operations in a shell if I can't
type-ahead find.

And I don't think this is an issue of, Well, I guess it's time to learn
new UI. I'm not averse to drastic changes to the UI if they're
improvements. This isn't a matter of Old Dog v. New Trick. This is a
very, very bad UI decision. It makes the software less useful.

Quick side rant: the GNOME team have been stripping out features and
removing useful functionality for years. I understand the idea of
boiling down a tool to its most essential parts, the benefits that that
has for maintainability, and the elegance of a focused UI. But come on.
It's easy to cross the line and break things that people rely on, and
that seems to have been GNOME's modus operandi for at least the past 6
years.

[Bug 1163107] Re: Wacom calibration results are off (wrong area)

2013-06-11 Thread Tomas
Well, that was easy. I indeed can just search for wacom in dconf and change the
area key value. This is of course a much nicer workaround than above, it
still works after rebooting. I only used gconf, with which I couldn't find this
key.
The key is in org gnome settings-daemon peripherals wacom (very long
string).

AFAIK this bug has not been fixed or attempted by anyone else.

Best of luck with fixing this Josh, and thanks for supplying us with a
decent workaround. Please let me know if you need any testing done, I'd
be happy to help!

[Bug 1190097] [NEW] Nautilus tries but fails to auto-install applications needed to open files of a given type

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Nautilus 3.6.3 on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy).

When I double click a file in Nautilus and there is no application
installed which can open the file, Nautilus will try to auto-install an
application but the auto-install hangs. Specifically, for example:

1. Make sure that Gnumeric is not installed on your system.
2. Create a file with extension .gnumeric and double click it in Nautlius.

Nautilus will report:

  Could not display finance.gnumeric.
There is no application installed for Gnumeric spreadsheet files.
Do you want to search for an application to open this file?

Click Yes. You'll now see a dialog that looks like this:

Searching for suitable software to open files
Files requires to install [sic] software to open files of the following file
type: Gnumeric spreadsheet

The dialog has a progress bar, which will briefly pulse and then stop.
You can now only press Cancel.

A glance at the code shows that Nautilus is trying to send a DBus
message to PackageKit to perform the install. There are apparently some
PackageKit components on my system (e.g. libpackagekit-glib2-14 is
installed), but something is not working.
