[Bug 1091371] [NEW] gvfs incorrect mime types integration into Kubuntu

2013-12-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

Distro: Kubuntu 11.10 64-Bits

I think there is an incorrect integration of gvfs in Kubuntu (or KDE?),
essentially cuz the support of mime types is not taken into account.

For example,

---
:~$ gvfs-mime
Error parsing commandline options: Specify one of --query and --set

Try gvfs-mime --help for more information.
---

and

---
:~$ gvfs-open trash://
gvfs-open: trash:///: error opening location: No application is registered as
handling this file
---

It seems the package 'desktop-file-utils' is not installed by default and it
seems it is the package handling mime types via the use of
'update-desktop-database'. Maybe GVFS should have as a dependency
'desktop-file-utils'?

Even after installing the package and launching 'update-desktop-
database', there are some problems, cuz the applications' priority order
has not been defined, therefore it opens up 'trash://' with a different
application than the File Manager (in my case it opened it up with
GwenView, instead of Dolphin).

I will give a try in Kubuntu 12.10 this w-e and see if the problem is
persistent.

tnx!

The Poppler fix is still under test to make sure that there are no
regressions. See

pdftops-origpagesizes-fixes.diff

In reality the fix is in the PostScript output device, but there is no
appropriate item to select as component.

There are some distro bug reports about Landscape-oriented page printing
with CUPS (1.6.x or newer), cups-filters, and PDF-PostScript conversion
with Poppler's pdftops:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=768811
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/1243484
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/1247740

As a quick workaround distro package maintainers have removed the
-origpagesizes from the call of Poppler's /usr/bin/pdftops by the
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops filter of cups-filters. I have not taken
this workaround patch upstream into cups-filters as the real problem is
in Poppler's PostScript output device.

When printing with CUPS 1.6.x or newer print jobs in PDF format are
first treated by the pdftopdf filter (of cups-filters). One thing this
filter does is rotating Landscape-oriented pages by 90 degrees for
printers which take their paper only short-edge first (portrait
orientation). For this rotation not the actual file content is rotated,
but a rotation field is set (usually incremented by 90). You can see it
by running pdfinfo on the input and on the output of pdftopdf. If the
first page of the PDF file is Landscape-oriented, the Page rot: entry
will change by 90 degrees.

I have displayed such a PDF file with several different viewers (evince,
gs, gv) and the rotation field is taken into account, Landscape-oriented
pages are rotated. Only when I run such a file through

pdftops -origpagesizes

the rotation is not taken into account and in the resulting PostScript
file the Landscape-oriented pages appear unrotated, leading to wrong
printouts when the /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops filter calls pdftops
-origpagesizes. This was leading to the wrong printouts the users
complained about in the bug reports. The workaround of dropping
-origpagesizes works well if all pages of the input document are of
the same size but if they are variable sizes, pages can get cut or
squeezed (this is why I contributed the -origpagesizes mode to Poppler
earlier).

I looked into the implementation of -origpagesizes and realized that I
forgot to take the rotation field into account. I also realized that the
paperMatch mode of the normal PostScript output mode (if you run pdftops
without -paper, -paperw, and -paperh) is very similar to
-origpagesizes and takes the rotation field into account.

So my attached patch folds the -origpagesizes mode implenmentation
into paperMatch and only does slight modifications. The original
paperMatch mode behavior is conserved to not break other programs using
it.

The differences of the new -origpagesizes mode are the following:

1. The rotation fields of the input PDF pages are taken into account.

2. The %%DocumentMedia: ... and following %%+ ... lines are removed.
Most PostScript displayers assume all pages being of the size in the
%%DocumentMedia: ... line. Without these lines they have no problems
displaying each page in the correct size.

3. The output pages are never centered, -origpagesizes activates
-nocenter implicitly. Normally, there should be no difference as the
output pages get the sizes of the input pages but there are some odd
files which need this measure.

With this all PDF input files convert into PS output files where all
pages display in the same size and orientation in the input and output
files.

[Bug 1238410] Re: Inconsistent cursor visibility with cursor plugin enabled

2013-12-23 Thread Philip
SInce no one else has chimed in, here's my situation... I had the mouse
cursor disappears problem on a fresh install of 13.10. Drove me nuts.
Changing the gnome settings to false (as reported elsewhere I think) did
not bring the cursor back, however, going to a full-screen terminal
(CTL-ALT-F6/F7 for me) brought the cursor back. The cursor would
disappear at random times, however there were two things that I could do
to guarantee to make it happen. Open a video in VLC or run SSVNC.

I'm not sure I did it correctly, but I added the saucy-proposed
repository and I added the /etc/apt/preference file to not force other
updates. Then I opened synaptic and could not find the xorg-server
package that had been updated. Couldn't find anything like that, but I
did find several packages with the similar version (2:1.14.3) so I
blindly upgraded xserver-xorg-core, which also upgraded xserver-xorg-
common (I think, because I can't find it in synaptic). I am now running
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.14.5-1ubuntu2~saucy1.

Anyway, all that to say that since I did that yesterday, it has
completely fixed the bug for me. Haven't had the cursor disappear once.
It fixed the VLC issue as well as the SSVNC issue. Thank you very
much!!!

[Bug 1250321] [NEW] [ASUS Sabertooth 990FX] Ubuntu 13.10/14.04 Catastrophic Random Kernel Crashes on Boot

2013-12-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

System Specs:

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX (with the latest BIOS)
AMD FX-8120
AMD Radeon HD 7950
240GB Seagate SSD (20GiB / partition)
2TB WD HDD (/home)

The same issues are present both with GPT UEFI and simple MBR non-UEFI
installs.

I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 three times and each met the same fate.
The first time you boot into the system after installing it, it works fine
(maybe). However, after you reboot the system it will fail on such a grand
catastrophic scale that you can't even boot into recovery mode since that will
begin spamming error messages quickly as well.

It does not output anything to logs during these errors so the only
thing you have to go by are screenshots of the errors. In general the
errors are all indicating issues with systemd-udevd.

I also had similar problems in Ubuntu 13.10, plus some extra problems.
Ubuntu 13.10 fails at installing grub and the grub-efi-amd64 and outputs
tons of errors regarding efibootmgr.

It isn't related to the kernel since Ubuntu 13.04 with kernel 3.12 works
perfectly. It also doesn't seem to be related to firmware since I use
linux-firmware-1.117 on Ubuntu 13.04 as well. It may be a bug related to
efibootmgr and systemd.

[Bug 1250321] Re: [ASUS Sabertooth 990FX] Ubuntu 13.10/14.04 Catastrophic Random Kernel Crashes on Boot

2013-12-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Michael Murphy, thank you for performing the requested action. Just to clarify
your Bug Description:
It isn't related to the kernel since Ubuntu 13.04 with kernel 3.12 works
perfectly.

Could you please provide the direct URL source of the 3.12 kernel you
used which worked perfectly?

[Bug 1250321] Re: [ASUS Sabertooth 990FX] Ubuntu 13.10/14.04 Catastrophic Random Kernel Crashes on Boot

2013-12-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Michael Murphy, thank you for the requested information. It would appear
patches/a patch applied to the downstream kernel is correlating to this
issue. Moving back to linux (Ubuntu) as this was a mis-toggle on my end.

** Description changed:

- System Specs:
+ The same issues are present both with GPT UEFI and simple MBR non-UEFI
+ installs. I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 three times and each met the
+ same fate. The first time you boot into the system after installing it,
+ it works fine (maybe). However, after you reboot the system it will fail
+ on such a grand catastrophic scale that you can't even boot into
+ recovery mode since that will begin spamming error messages quickly as
+ well. It does not output anything to logs during these errors so the
+ only thing you have to go by are screenshots of the errors. In general
+ the errors are all indicating issues with systemd-udevd. I also had
+ similar problems in Ubuntu 13.10, plus some extra problems. Ubuntu 13.10
+ fails at installing grub and the grub-efi-amd64 and outputs tons of
+ errors regarding efibootmgr.

- ASUS Sabertooth 990FX (with the latest BIOS)
- AMD FX-8120
- AMD Radeon HD 7950
- 240GB Seagate SSD (20GiB / partition)
- 2TB WD HDD (/home)
+ It isn't related to the kernel since Ubuntu 13.04 with mainline kernel
+ 3.12 works perfectly. It also doesn't seem to be related to firmware
+ since I use linux-firmware-1.117 on Ubuntu 13.04 as well. It may be a
+ bug related to efibootmgr and systemd.

can type your password it doesnt change using the Alt + Shift L but it
also doesnt work using the trick that we said above Shift L + Alt .

So the user is locked out of his pc and the only solution i found is to
press Switch user to bring up the lighdm login screen instead , where
you can manually select the typing language with the mouse.

Reproduce : Change manually the language to something different that
your default , manually lock the pc using the Cog menu ( shortcut Ctrl +
Alt + L didnt work for me when i had my second language selected ) try
to change the language.
