2014-01-24 Thread Norbert
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 620751 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620751

Hi JG!

Thanks for sharing. I wish I could test this, but I have left IBM in
March 2013. Although I recall, when tested, that this didn't make any
difference for me, and the error message was also different. The weird
part was, that Adobe Acrobat Reader worked well it was poppler failing.
I still think it is related to how poppler handles Postscript. Maybe it
lacks some functions...

[Bug 1242467] Re: Support docsets

2014-01-24 Thread roman
I like that idea very much.
Actually, I discovered DevHelp accidentally when I was trying to build a
GNOME-specific Zeal analogue (since Zeal code base is really hard to work with,
and the application is quite unstable). I've even started development of a
portable C-library to work with docsets. So I think I can help with the feature
development since I really interested in it and the DevHelp code base looks
very mature.

However, I think we should contact Kapeli regarding this feature

http://kapeli.com/docset_links
These docsets are available for personal use only, to be used with Dash or
Zeal. If you'd like to use these docsets to build an app or tool (commercial or
free), please contact me first.

[Bug 797485] Re: Status Bar Covers File Name at Bottom

2014-01-24 Thread Stanislav
Affects me in the same way as the previous speakers. I have the list
view set as default and so I have to deal with this bug on a daily
basis. Since at least one file is selected alsmot all the time, its
information pop-up covers the last file in the list completely so I
cannot see it nor open the file. Very frustrating. The only way to
access the last file in the list is the one suggested by doken --
Ctrl+click deselect the currently selected file.

[Bug 1239087]

2014-01-24 Thread Zeuthen
The reason that

 $ udisks --detach /dev/sdX

spins down the disk properly but clicking the Power off menu item in
the GNOME Disks application doesn't has to do with the fact that the
udisks program is from udisks version 1 and was rewritten in udisks
version 2.

udisks v1: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/udisks/tree/src/helpers/job-
drive-detach.c?id=1.0.4

udisks v2:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/udisks/tree/src/udiskslinuxdrive.c?id=2.1.2#n1195

As you can see, both v1 and v2 does this by writing a '1' to the
'remove' sysfs attribute on the parent USB device, as per

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=253e05724f9230910344357b1142ad8642ff9f5a

and this makes most USB-attached disk drives actually power down - at
least all the different devices that I've tested with.

However, what's missing in v2 (and present in v1) is the following steps

 1. sending the SCSI SYNCHRONIZE CACHE command
 2. sending START/STOP UNIT command
 3. unbinding the USB Mass Storage kernel driver

Notably, there's actually a TODO item in v2 for doing this:

/* TODO: Send the eject? Send SCSI START STOP UNIT? */

Now, I don't think that 3. is necessary as it happens as part of writing
to the 'remove' sysfs file. That leaves 1. and 2.

Here's what I'd like to you try. Does

 sg_start --stop /dev/sdX

do what you want? If so, we should add 1. and 2. to v2.

[Bug 1239087]

2014-01-24 Thread Norbert
Dear David!
First of all I would like to thank you for answer and recommendation!

I tested my USB-harddrives with sg_start utility. Thank you for hint, I
did not know about SCSI utilities before.

I made such tests under Ubuntu 12.04.4, Fedora 20 and OpenSuSe 13.1 with all
installed updates.
* Ubuntu 12.04.4 does not have udisks2, it has udisks 1.0.4-5ubuntu2.1,
sg3-utils 1.33-1.
* Fedora 20 has udisks-1.0.4-12.fc20.i686, udisks2-2.1.2-1.fc20.i686,
sg3_utils-1.37-2.fc20.i686.
* OpenSuSe 13.1 has udisks-1.0.4-13.1.3.i586, udisks2-2.1.1-2.1.3.i586,
sg3_utils-1.36-3.1.2.i586.

For more adequate results I disabled auto-mount feature in GNOME with
dconf-editor (as recommended here -
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB#Configuring_Automounting).

My test results are the following:
1. For my USB-HDD (Seagate ST9750420A in USB 2.0 Tsunami e-data 2500 enclosure,
lsusb - 04fc:0c25 Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd SATALink SPIF225A)
1.1. command “sg_start --stop /dev/sdX” really spin-downs my drive
(sometimes on 2nd or 3rd attempt - I don’t know why), device remains in system
and spin-up again only on my demand.
1.2. command “udisks --detach /dev/sdX” spin-downs my drive (always on 1st
attempt), device is completely removed from system after detach.

2. For my USB 3.0 WD My Passport Ultra (WD WD20NMVW,
lsusb - 1058:0743 Western Digital Technologies, Inc.)
2.1. command “sg_start --stop /dev/sdX” is ignored by this HDD (it make one
click, but does not spin-down). Maybe it is because of
proprietary/non-fully-compliant ATA-command set in WD’s controller.
2.2. command “udisks --detach /dev/sdX” spin-downs my drive (on 1st attempt
always), device is completely removed from system after detach.

So the results are identical for all three distros.
For me it seems, that “udisks --detach” works better and in 100% (on all
distros and with proprietary WD HDD-controller).
So if you have time, please, do deeper comparison between udisks v.1, udisks
v.2 and sg_start.

I'm ready to do more testing if you send me concrete instruction, but I
am not expert and I do not know how to debug/trace/log ATA and udisks.

[Bug 1178697] Re: Regression - Can't Open with on Folders

2014-01-24 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1026254 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026254

I trust you guys will make the best decision.

I've done my best to advocate the usefulness of this feature. The main
thing I will tell you, is that after you've discovered this feature, you
can't go back.

My own philosophy on software advancement places priority on two
(potentially mutually exclusive) priorities:

1) For the sake of intuitiveness, always provide a contextual menu for
each element graphically displayed. Doing so, allows the user to answers
the question: What are all the things I do with this thing?. Another
way of saying this is: Place functionality near as possible to the
graphical representation of the thing that the functionality is about.
Doing this is most intuitive, and will eliminate mouse travel.

2) Always strive to eliminate the number of steps required to achieve a
task, and do this in a manner that does not compromise the intuitiveness
(the obviousness) of how to perform that task.

In this use case, we have user browsing through their file system with
Nautilus. They come across a folder containing a hierarchy of music
files. The user decides he would like to recursively enqueue this
folder's files into his favorite music player. Due to principle #1, the
most intuitive way to do this (giving context and nearness) is to place
an option in the context menu that will allow him to recursively enqueue
this folder into the application of his choice.

This method also fulfills principle #2, because it eliminates these 3
steps: (1) Launch an application. (2) Position the window of that
application so that is not on top of the Nautilus window (3) Drag the
folder from the Nautilus window into the other application's window.

Even a new user, could easily discover the usefulness of this feature,
due to intuitiveness of context menus, which always answer the question
What can I do with this thing? And, any user who has previously
discovered this, will prefer it in this exact use case scenario.

Additional use cases this serves:
- Open folder with k4dirstat, to see what within that folder is taking up the
most space on your hard drive
- Enqueue Folder into VLC to watch multiple music videos one after the other.

Any application that can use a folder as a launching input benefits from
this previously achieve (but now missing) feature.

made the linux command line so powerful. I'd love to see this same power

2014-01-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
@Lonnie: you seem to be a power user and have your workflow, that's fine
but that's just an anecdotic example ;-)

Just as a counter-example, I've been using Ubuntu for 10 years, I do use
nautilus to manage files but I've used that feature.
- I access music albums or photo collections through rhythmbox or shotwell
usually.
- If you double click on an image it opens in eog which has a gallery which
lists all the images from the current directory
- you can easily dnd a directory to totem, or open the directory, select all
and right-click/open with

Everyone has a different workflow I guess ;-)

Note that you wrote For the sake of intuitiveness, always provide a
contextual menu for each element graphically displayed, user testing
shows that context menu are not intuitive for most users.

As written on one of the duplicate, there is no right/wrong there, but a
balance between too many options making the menu difficult to parse/use
and having the useful options easily available.

I'm unsure how used that feature is/how good the workaround are
considered by most user (dnd, select-all - right click on the
selection) and I don't know if we have a good way to get useful datas on
such questions...

2014-01-24 Thread Jan Schürmann
@Sebastien: Excuse me Sebastien but what you wrote is bull*** in my
eyes!!!

I don't know what users have tested the functionality of Ubuntu but most users
in the Windows-World and growing number of users in the Apple Universe use
right-click menus for exactly the reason of intuitive and fast workflow! that
has nothing to do with Power-User or such!
that is no statistic, that is my own experience on working with many different
user-types in my daily business!

and on the other hand is there really NO reason to completely remove
features (even if only ONE person is using it!) with the argument that
it confuses new users!! What does that mean?? I think in that case it
would be much smarter to disable the feature by default and let the so-
called Power-User enable it!

Again excuse my harsh words but i'm so upset about the changes in
Nautilus, on the Launcher dodge window feature and on the global-menu!!

I use Ubuntu only for 8 years but the recent changes are the wrong way i
think (for the first time)

2014-01-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
@Jan:

- let's not argue about usability, it's not my domain, I'm just relaying
what I've read over the years (see e.g
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Context_menu#Usability)

- the argument there it's not that it confuses new users, where did
you get that? I wrote but a balance between too many options making the
menu difficult to parse/use and having the useful options easily
available.

The point is that if you have 150 features in nautilus and you list them
all in its context menu, then you end up with a menu with 150 items.
That's a lot of information and it means it's getting very slow for
anyone to find where the item they are looking for is.

Sure that number is an exageration, but it's not always easy to provide
all the feature while keeping an interface pleasant to use

- the changes in nautilus are coming from GNOME, not from us, we are
just providing the software and trying to respect those who write it, by
not overwritting too much of their decision in the version we ship,
while keeping our users happy ... that's not always an easy balance
either

[Bug 1272435] [NEW] Add show in folder to context menu of file found by Search

2014-01-24 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

After locating a file using Nautilus's search feature, I'm always
wanting to know this question:

Where is this file that Nautilus has found for me?

When searching for a file, I'm not just trying to find that file, I'm
also trying to discover the path that the file is located at (for future
reference). I may decide to move that file to another location, if it is
not where I want it to be.

The fact that I've had to do a search for this file, gives great
likelihood to the fact that (in addition to finding the file) I'm
wanting to also know WHERE it is. Many file manager's search results,
alone, do not answer this relevant question.

You may say, why don't you just click Properties, from the context
menu. The problem with this approach, is that, although the dialog
attempts to indicate the file's location, instead, it only shows the
first portion of the path-location, cropping off the right portion of
the path in a manner where the entire path cannot be seen.

The best approach I've seen for this, in other applications, is to add
Show in Folder to the search-result's context-menu, which opens the
folder that contains the file and add focus to that file within its
folder.

With this one step, now the user has achieved multiple objectives:
1) He now knows where the file is, in the context of his file system
2) He is in a perfect position to decide if he wants to move this file
elsewhere.

There may not be an immediate demand for this feature, but once
implemented, I sure that it will become appreciated, relied upon, and
expected for future generations. I hope to one day see it as a standard
option in all file search utilities.

[Bug 1272446] [NEW] File Properties - Location Cannot Be Seen in its Entirety

2014-01-24 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

The locations of files are ellipsified (and therefore right-cropped)
when viewing the properties of a file.

To see this bug, do the following.

1) Open Nautilus
2) Navigate to a file location whose entire path-location is more than 26
characters in length.
3) Right-Click the file, and go to Properties
4) Under the Basic tab, see the Location: field.

Now, notice that it is impossible to see the file's location in its
entirety!

This bug is especially frustrating, after performing a search for a
file, because the search results offer no indication of that file's
actual path-location, and going to properties of the file (as a search
result) only shows the first half its path (making this information
effectively useless).

Additionally, when I'm looking for this information, I'm typically
wanting to copy it to the clipboard. Please ease this task as much as
possible. This would be an excellent location to add a small icon button
tool-tipped Copy Location to Clipboard.

This suggestion caters to power users without taking anything away from
beginners.

[Bug 1272455] [NEW] window scrolling is broken

2014-01-24 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Public bug reported:

xchat-gnome 1:0.30.0~git20131003.d20b8d-2ubuntu1 that just got uploaded
to trusty has broken window scrolling behaviour.

When starting up, it automatically scrolls the window while loading all
the scrollback text which makes it take forever to start.

Once started, scrolling to the bottom of a channel with the mouse wheel,
switching to a different channel, and coming back doesn't restore the
channel to the bottom.

This version is borderline unusable.

[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2014-01-24 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
@Sebastien

I think all can intelligibly agree that the only reason a context menu
could be considered non-intuitive is due to the fact that it often
requires a right-click, instead of a left-click.

The studies you reference do not address the idea of making a normal
left-click produce context menus (which could be used in touch
interfaces as well).

In situations where the left-click produces the context-menu, even the
newest users will find it incredibly intuitive.

Right-click-context-menus, are a very small price in intuitiveness for
the benefits of always being able to answer the question: What can I do
with this thing?

If I called the shots at Ubuntu, a lot more would be context-menu-driven. To
address the non-intuitiveness of right-clicking.
You could remind the new user each session (until they disable the
notification) the following:

If you don't know what something is, or what you can do with it: RIGHT-
CLICK it

Or, another idea is, by default, make *left-clicks* display context
menus, and give advanced users the ability move that feature to the
right-click menu. Now you have perfect intuitiveness right off the bat,
and users can take off their training wheels at any point.

This is huge idea for User Friendliness. One day someone is going to get
this right. It just makes too much sense:

Show me what I can do with what I'm clicking on.

Its that simple. Every UI should keep this concept in mind during design
and upgrade. That's my opinion.

I have noticed a similar behaviour when dealing with .djvu files, where
it seems to occur whenever the current result is located at the bottom
of the screen. In this case said result will not be highlighted as
darker than other results like it should. The list of results on the
left is always empty on .djvu files as well.

2014-01-24 Thread Jackson Doak
I hadn't seen it in supported-desktop-extra, although why is it there?

Why do you want these packages to be demoted?
It seems wasteful to have packages in main if the don't need to be.

[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2014-01-24 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
You make a good point about the confusion that can come from too many
options being in a context-menu.

This can be addressed, however, by putting the numerous and rarely used
option under one parent-option labeled Advanced.

[Bug 1242678] Re: evince cannot render some EPS files

2014-01-24 Thread Till Kamppeter
Could you somehow find out the Ghostscript command lines (or parameter
lists for libgs calls) for both the non-working unrotated case and the
working rotated case? Could you also find out the actual files sent to
Ghostscript for rendering? To post an upstream bug report at Ghostscript
(http://bugs.ghostscript.com/) I would need a way to reproduce the
problem by a pure Ghostscript command line.

I get this behavior on Raring, 13.04.The pull down menus from any
app take longer and longer to display and respond to the mouse. All I
do is log out and log back in, and then the delay 'goes away' and my
pull down menus are once again responsive.

[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2014-01-24 Thread Doug McMahon
One question, 1 final comment (from me

Did Gnome accept/commit the return of type-ahead find or is this just
an Ubuntu change, noting that if the latter it's an extensive patch
compared to returning 'open with' which involves removing 2 lines,
adding 3 in an area that remains virtually untouched in the last 18
months or so.

Users also find this handy to open a dir. from nautilus in another file
manager for specific purposes such as with one that is multi-pane.
(again just a convenience

[Bug 144406] Re: some windows do not appear in the window list

2014-01-24 Thread Jason Monschke
Santiago and Roberto,

I have started a bug report for this issue relating to the xfce-panel
here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-panel/+bug/1192688

I also have been having similar problems in Xubuntu 12.04, 12.10, 13.04,
13.10. Pressing ALT+TAB does bring Matlab and other java windows back
onto the panel but this is very annoying especially when you are using
several different windows.

[Bug 1270957] Re: 13.10: screen does not turn off after x minutes of inactivity

2014-01-24 Thread Olivier
Bonjour Sébastien,

I've made several trials, about 3 days ago: with or without guest
session, then closing some applications , one after the other, but the
problem remained. The screen became black, after 1 minute (as defined in
settings), but the back light behind didn't turn off. And now, from
yesterday, it seems the problem has disappeared: the light is turning
off correctly, after the defined time... Strange... I didn't change
anything, apart that I let the automatic Ubuntu update install a small
change (I don't remember what), yesterday or the day before. No idea if
there is a relation.

Only new problem: the luminosity level changing, with the key
combination shortcut, works sometimes and sometimes not, in an
unpredictable way. Strange... Might be a problem with the LCD screen
driver (netbook ACER Aspire One, pilote: VESA : WRESTLER).

In any case, I presume my bug can be considered as closed, even though
all that is strange and quite confused to me.

I just tested nemo 1.8.4 (on trusty) and the window won't close if the
type-ahead entry is shown.

I'm pretty happy to see this in proposed too.
Thanks to Robert Ancell as well for helping merge this (fixing some of my
mistakes).

Also, don't hesitate to nudge the nautilus people into reconsidering this:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=721968
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=681871
(They quickly closed my patch submission as a duplicate of a 1.5yr old bug.)

Re: [Bug 1271605] Re: Cannot close window if type-ahead entry is open

2014-01-24 Thread Edwin Pujols
Ah, sorry I mixed up the versions being put to test.

Just tried with Nemo 2.0.8 and the window /does not/ get closed. What
happens is that the type-ahead entry disappears after a short while.

*Off-topic* BTW, on checking this out, I discovered that Nemo crashes if I
open the About dialog. Not sure if the bug has been filed at the least.

[Bug 1263591] Re: Add notification-area to panel-default-layout.layout

2014-01-24 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Thanks a lot for the feedback, I'm marking it as Won't Fix then.

Some notes:
1) nm-applet integration has issues, it doesn't display the applet for me on
gnome-flashback without manually adding notification-area. I also tried with a
recent 14.04 live CD, some times nm-applet did appear and some times it didn't,
so I think there's some race condition involved, possibly related to LP
#1256961. I'll test more when that bug is resolved. With notification-area
manually added, there's no race condition, nm-applet always appears.

2) About pidgin, if you're talking about
http://packages.ubuntu.com/indicator-status-provider-pidgin, I see there it's
only available for 12.04, maybe that's why I didn't have the integration issues
there and I'm having them now in 14.04.
In 14.04 I see that indicator-messages conflicts with
indicator-status-provider-pidgin, is pidgin in 14.04 supposed to use
indicator-messages, and for some reason it doesn't?

3) About stardict and the other apps that aren't yet ported to use the new
indicators, let's hope they will soon, but until then, users have no way of
knowing why some applications aren't displaying their indicators and that they
need to add notification-area manually to work around that problem.
Deprecating something doesn't mean it has to be removed immediately, there
should be a grace period until e.g. 80% of the involved applications has had
enough time to update their code base to use the new indicators.
So maybe gnome-panel could grant them that grace period and add
notification-area for a couple of more years, dunno...

Kind regards,
Alkis

Could you somehow find out the Ghostscript command lines (or parameter
lists for libgs calls) for both the non-working unrotated case and the
working rotated case? Could you also find out the actual files sent to
Ghostscript for rendering? To post an upstream bug report at Ghostscript
(http://bugs.ghostscript.com/) I would need a way to reproduce the
problem by a pure Ghostscript command line.

 Title:
evince cannot render some EPS files

 Status in Evince document viewer:
   New
Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu:
   Triaged
Status in “ghostscript” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
   I upgraded to Ubuntu Saucy,
evince cannot render EPS files generated by gnuplot.
   (Just show an empty page.)

   [how to reproduce]

   1. Generate an EPS file using gnuplot by executing the following command.
   $ gnuplot -e set terminal postscript; set output 'test.eps'; plot x;

   2. Open the file test.eps just created.
   $ evince test.eps

The following are what evince writes to the terminal.

   (evince:24176): EvinceDocument-CRITICAL **: ev_document_get_n_pages:
   assertion 'EV_IS_DOCUMENT (document)' failed

   (evince:24176): Gtk-WARNING **: drawing failure for widget `EvView':
   invalid matrix (not invertible)

   (evince:24176): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_from_surface:
assertion 'width 0 height 0' failed

   (evince:24176): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_from_surface:
assertion 'width 0 height 0' failed

   3. Then evince just shows an empty (white) page.

   ===

If i rotate 90 or -90 degree by pressing Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right key,
evince can show this file correctly.

   ===

Okular, GIMP, inkscape and gs can show this EPS file.
(may be rotated 90 degree, however)
