Re: [Bug 1311443] Re: switching input method is not reliable

2014-06-29 Thread Shu Hung (Koala)
Tried using the proposed gnome-settings-daemon package for a few days.
The input method switch problem didn't appear at all.
I think it's safe to say that it fixed this bug.

Hope I can see the proposed package on the main repository soon.

Thanks.

[Bug 12154] Re: Nautilus should have a superuser mode

2014-06-29 Thread JohnWashington
This one has always irritated the heck out of me, because I often don't
know in advance of starting Nautilus that I'm going to want to change
something in a root-owned file. But I've been resigned to it because I
imagined there was some insuperable difficulty in implementing it. And
when my students hit this problem I get a little defensive and tell them
it's not the developers' fault, it's due to the restrictions in Linux
that prevent processes gaining root, which would create a security risk.

I've recently switched to Crunchbang. Imagine my surprise when I found
the file manager there can do what I want! The file manager is Thunar.
So I googled for 'thunar privilege escalation' and found an interesting
article: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/file-browser-privilege-
escalation-done-right/

More than 9 years since this serious usability bug was filed. Almost 7
years since that psychocats article.

The wonderful thing about open source development is the speed of
progress, the way that problems are fixed quickly and systems are
updated. Really?

[Bug 30378] Re: Joystick activity does not stop the screensaver

2014-06-29 Thread Daniel Ellis
Agree whole heartedly with Stephan Sokolow. We need a way to have the X
server handle the joystick without having it send the mapped events to
other applications. Was there any response from upstream?

For now, here is how you can enable the joystick within the X server:-

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-joystick

This creates the file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-joystick.conf

Now to disable the mouse integration, and create a mapping of the
buttons so they all behave as shift keys, edit the file to look as
follows:-

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "joystick catchall"
MatchIsJoystick "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "joystick"
Option "StartKeysEnabled" "True"
Option "StartMouseEnabled" "False"
Option "MapButton1""key=50"
Option "MapButton2""key=50"
Option "MapButton3""key=50"
Option "MapButton4""key=50"
EndSection

Now pressing any of the four mains buttons will prevent the screensaver
from appearing. Although, this will not work for any games that you
only use the direction pads on. I think most games involve button
presses, so hopefully this is a practical solution for people until a
proper solution is available.

[Bug 1201128] Re: missing icons for .directory files

2014-06-29 Thread CatKiller
@jbicha: My previous comment reads like an attack on you personally. It
wasn't intended to be. I'm grateful that you attempted a fix, even
though your approach didn't actually address the problem described in
the initial report. The lack of resources and low priority for this kind
of papercut issue shows how far the Ubuntu project has departed from the
user-focused philosophy that initially made it good. Hence, the
frustration.

[Bug 1201128] Re: missing icons for .directory files

2014-06-29 Thread CatKiller
** Description changed:

Directory files have been shipped with incorrect Icon= fields. For
  example, ActionGames.directory contains Icon=weather-storm.

- This should instead read Icons=applications-action (1) which is included
+ This should instead read Icon=applications-action (1) which is included
in many icon sets (2), leaving this kind of substitution to the theme
author using symlinks. Including references to these substitutions
directly in the .directory files is an inappropriate and unecessary
kludge which breaks themes, including the default one.

I've only checked the Games .directory files so far, since that is what
I was doing when I encountered the bug, but they all exhibit this
problem. I'm using Ubuntu 13.04, but it's the kind of thing that could
have been sitting undone for a while. It's probably worth checking
whether this bug exists upstream or whether it's been introduced by the
  Ubuntu team.

Upon further checking, Bug #421294 is a particular case of this bug,
where the line reads Icon=system-run rather than Icon=applications-
puzzles. From this report and Bug #421695 it seems likely that this bug
  was introduced in Karmic.

  (1) or similar - I'm not entirely sure on whether this will shake out as
applications-action or applications-games-action; Gnome currently goes
one way and KDE the other but, either way, symlinks are cheap and it can
  be sorted out through freedesktop.

  (2) Ubuntu's own Humanity icon set includes icons of this form, but they
are not used because of this bug.

[Bug 1201128] Re: missing icons for .directory files

2014-06-29 Thread CatKiller
The "fix" was entirely inadequate. Just three files, replacing one
arbitrarily inappropriate icon with another, and not the ones that
people have complained about. There are standard names for these,
included within the default Ubuntu theme. Use those. If you really must
use some other icon, call it the appropriate thing and then symlink to
whatever icon you've pulled out of the hat. It isn't difficult. Failure
to do so highlights how little you value the consistency of the user
experience.

'Edit>Preference>Plugins' menu.
+ I have activated the completion plugin provided in the
+ 'Edit>Preference>Plugins' menu.
When using a code snippet that uses variables to put the same text at various
places, autocompleting this text causes a mess in the snippet.

Example: with the following test snippet

- begin($1) ... end($1)
+ begin($1) ... end($1)

suppose I start typing 'wh...' in place of $1 and 'while' is proposed
- by the autocompletion plugin. Then I you press enter I get something
+ by the autocompletion plugin, then if I press enter, I get something
  like

-begin(whwhilewhwhile)
+    begin(whwhilewhwhile)

  instead of

-begin(while) ... end(while)
+    begin(while) ... end(while)

Moreover pressing ctrl+c to cancel yiels even messier results.

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-06-29 Thread Hartwig Kolbe
That blueman ppa version works for me, also.
But, I had to reboot to have it working, restarting blueman and pulseaudio did
not do the job.
Strange enough that it now works with blueman. Despite i never use blueman, its
startup seems necessary.

[Bug 1314971] Re: Potential Security Issue - Having multiple users logins the administrator account without asking for password

2014-06-29 Thread Aditya
@Andrew

I don't quite remember if I had installed wth automatic login or not;
but I had changed that setting a couple of times (twice/thrice) from
Systems Settings (Gnome Control Panel >> User Accounts).

And I am using Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 fresh install.
