[Bug 1665140] Re: Emoji that should be wide, according to Unicode 9, display incorrectly in the terminal

2017-02-17 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Also note that in gnome-terminals' Profile Preferences, under the
Compatibility tab you can choose whether you want ambiguous width
characters to be narrow or wide.

If, apparently, your system has Unicode 8.0 (where these characters are
still ambiguous) and vim handles them as wide, changing gnome-terminal
to also treat them as wide might be a sensible workaround for you.
(This, however, goes against glibc's database which is in turn used by
ncurses etc.).

[Bug 627195] Re: Window management - Apps raised from indicators sometimes dont have the focus

2017-02-17 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 11.10 beta
  compiz 1:0.9.5.94+bzr2803-0ubuntu5
  unity 4.16.0-0ubuntu1

  1. open banshee, start a song in it and minimize
  2. open another application lets say gnome-terminal
  3. click on the sound menu and select banshee

  What happens
banshee icon in the launcher wiggles and banshee main window is not shown

  What should happen
banshee main window should come to focus

This is a long standing bug which Ted Gould thinks should be fixed at
  window manager's level.

  Some other observations=
  The problem wont happen
  1. if every other app is minimized or
  2. Banshee is the only opened app or
  3. after opening gnome-terminal, banshee window is closed so that it hides to
the SoundMenu and opened again

  =Comment from Ted Gould=
tedg, Hi! any thoughts on the long standing bug 627195 ? Its been
there before unity so I guess we can conclude unity not to be responsible

om26er, My thought is that window managers should $%#$ get
fixed... though I haven't convinced smspillaz of it yet.

  =The good rule=
3v1n0: Indicators should present the application windows by passing to them
the timestamp of the menu item activation event.

Unfortunately for indicator-sound, this is not trival as it sounds, since it
needs a change to the MPRIS dbus specification.
  See comment https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/627195/comments/26
for more informations.

For what concerns libappindicator based indicators (such as the one used by
tomboy), since it's not currently possible in libdbusmenu to pass the event
during activation (so that clients will be able to get the proper timestamp
using gtk_get_current_event_time), there are two "hackish" ways:
  1. Use the server time to present a window:
     https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=688830
  2. Get the event timestamp from the dbus-menu linked to the gtk-menus:
     https://archive.is/2tLX6
  3. Qt applications workaround: http://is.gd/WnW9eN

Window managers will obey to it.
+
+ ===
+
+ SRU for sni-qt:
+
+ [Test case]
+
+ git clone https://github.com/3v1n0/indicators-examples-snaps
+ cd indicators-examples-snaps/qt4-systray
+ qmake-qt4
+ ./systray
+
+ Close the app, now try to restore it from in the indicator (after having
played with some app writing text on it such as gnome-terminal or gedit).
+ The app should be in foreground now

[Bug 1301083] Re: Drag and Drop File Auto Opens Folders

2017-02-17 Thread Alexandros
@joshu aghora (josh-gura)
Well it seems that the Ubuntu Gnome team has no plans to fix this for 16.04
LTS.

You can either add the Gnome Team staging :ppa from Launchpad and
upgrade Gnome to 3.20 (not ideal, because it might break the system) or
move to another distro.

I am still running the same Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 installation that I had
when I reported this bug 7 months ago and I've learnt to live with it.
But it's still very annoying and I am considering switching to Open Suse
Leap with Gnome 3.20 because of this bug and other problems that I am
currently having with Ubuntu Gnome.

[Bug 1665573] Re: package libwine-dev (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/wine/libaclui.def', which is also in package wine1.8-amd64 1:1.8.6-0ubun

2017-02-17 Thread jre
GNOME Software Center should not crash because of an packaging error,
therefore marking it as affected by this bug.

Background:
You already have Wine from the Ubuntu repositories installed (at least the
(sub-)package fonts-wine which is used by the package suites src:wine and
src:wine-development).

Now you're trying to install wine1.8 (1:1.8.6-0ubuntu1~17.04~ricotz1)
from a PPA. This results in a file conflict, which is unfortunately not
handled by an "Conflicts" in the packaging.

-> Please tell the maintainer of above PPA to at least add the
"Conflicts: fonts-wine" to the packaging.

One might add a reverse conflicts also to the Wine packages in the
packages in the Ubuntu repository, but imo we can't reasonably consider
what single PPAs do. Personally I'd say this bug is "invalid" for wine
(Ubuntu).

To clean up the situation for you I propose to uninstall all Wine
packages from your system, and then start fresh again by installing only
one version (only if you go for the packages in the Ubuntu repository
you may coinstall two suites: src:wine and src:wine-development).

[Bug 1665140] Re: Emoji that should be wide, according to Unicode 9, display incorrectly in the terminal

2017-02-17 Thread Egmont Koblinger
You've reported this bug against Ubuntu 16.04, whereas Unicode 9.0 was
released in June 2016. The expected behavior in that distro is hence
Unicode 8.0's.

gnome-terminal takes the character width from glib (package:
libglib2.0-0), which has surprisingly upgraded to Unicode 9.0 in a micro
version, namely 2.50.1. Again surprisingly, Yakkety has released this
version as an update (2.50.2), not in the original yakkety package
(2.50.0), which again arguably shouldn't have happened.

Most terminal emulators and apps take the character width from glibc
(package: libc6), which has not updated to Unicode 9.0 yet (as of the
just released version 2.25). At least Fedora, however, has already
patched it forward: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Unicode_9.0.
Maybe Ubuntu too, or is planning to, I don't know.

Vim, as far as I know, has its own separate built-in database.

gnome-terminal being different from most of the apps is already causing
quite a bit of a headache, see e.g.:

- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772812 (and follow the
links from there as well to see some of the problems it causes),

- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772890 (a recommendation
for gnome-terminal to use glibc's database instead - no work has been
done yet).

vim using its own database adds yet another twist to the story. I don't
know what version it ships.

The bug you reported is indeed a valid and (presumably especially in
yakkety (with updates) and zesty) a quite serious one. Strictly
speaking, though, I don't think it's a gnome-terminal bug. I think it's
a much higher level issue that should be brought up in some core
developer mailing list.

I believe it's the distro's responsibility to ship glib, glibc and vim
so that all use the same Unicode version.

(Or even better, but it takes more time and a heavy refactoring: There
should be a single core Unicode library that glibc, glib, vim etc. all
depend on. Unfortunately I find it unlikely to get implemented.)
