[Bug 1666178] Re: Legacy apps are crashing in mir_create_modal_dialog_window_spec() due to NULL parent pointer
OK, from the duplicate bug I can see the common theme. We either have buggy toolkits, or just some legacy apps expect to create "modal" dialogs without a parent window. [Bug 1583088] Re: Randomly corrupt font / text / characters in Unity8
Assuming the current value is 4 might be incorrect in this case but also won't cause the bug unless they also fail to call "glPixelStorei(GL_UNPACK_ALIGNMENT, 4)" somewhere that they need it to be 4. Where you see Qt code that uses alignment 1, that's not relevant here because it will play perfectly with Mir. The problem is elsewhere... some GL unpacking without a glPixelStorei call is being done and that location expects/requires alignment of 4. So I guess start by searching for all glTexImage2D calls and ensure they are all /immediately/ preceded by glPixelStorei. It's possible Qt already has some housekeeping for that but then the bind call happens in the middle: Qt: glPixelStorei(GL_UNPACK_ALIGNMENT, 4); Qt: calls the offending Mir bind code Qt: glTexSubImage2D or glTexImage2D So the fix then would still be in qtdeclarative; either reorder lines 1 & 2, or add another glPixelStorei call in before the glTex*Image2D calls in Qt. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-desktop in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1583088 Title: Randomly corrupt font / text / characters in Unity8 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1583088/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too
Hey Jorge, some answers, for the same definition of "some" :P - What does an upgrade look like? Let's say I have a home directory with gigs of data, when I accomplish an upgrade to 17.10 when/how does indexing take place? Indexing would take place when the services have been started on the user session, presumably started by the install scripts, or on session restart. tracker-miner-fs has a configurable timeout (defaults to 15s) to avoid I/O during session startup, as it's already pretty high at that time. - Is this something that happens in the background or during a package installation? All indexing happens in the background, on startup tracker-miner-fs performs an initial crawling where it 1) sets up directory monitors and 2) ensures its idea of the FS is up-to-date (eg. there's not been changes between reboots). After that, tracker-miner-fs just listens to directory monitor events and updates its DB, subdirectories newly added to recursively indexed folders would be crawled in a similar way when discovered. And same for local mounted volumes, although we don't index those by default. Indexing is also influenced by AC adapter/battery state and configuration, it reduces to a crawl or pauses altogether given the right conditions. - Is indexing a long process? It depends, Tracker only indexes XDG folders (and $HOME non-recursively) by default, so indexing depends on the amount of files/directories and I/O throughtput. There's of course worst cases like multi-TB 2500rpm HDDs with millions of files, but on more average setups tracker-miner-fs should take the order of seconds. A somewhat favorable example, reindexing from scratch ~8K items take tracker-miner-fs ~2s on this ssd- powered laptop. But tracker-miner-fs only manages FS-level information, the isolated tracker-extract process performs the actual content sniffing, and the time spent there is variable too per mimetype, eg. heavy PDF documents might take poppler several seconds each, while plain text files could be handled in the ballpark of hundreds per second. Oh, and there's also file/dir name pattern matching to cut down uninteresting portions of the filesystem, tracker-miner-fs eg. tries to avoid git repos, uncompressed tarballs and whatnot. - Is it something we need to display to the user? It's your call really... gnome doesn't bother for example. Some apps like gnome-music do track activity and show a "Loading..." in-app banner, but little else. - Is it one of those things where we'll need to inform users in the release notes that an expensive io operation will take place as part of the upgrade? It's maybe wise to do that, it will churn a few extra cycles globally. - In the past I recall having to modify inotify handles for performance, at some point the default handles we set in ubuntu would run out and search wouldn't work well at all. Since that was years ago I'm assuming these sorts of issues have been sorted out? I assume so, tracker is admittedly greedy with inotify handles, but there's been for quite some time now the runtime checks for the user limit, leaving also some room for other apps wanting file monitors. If with the big slice of handles that Tracker takes for itself there's really not enough to cover the indexed portions of the filesystem, Tracker takes this as a soft failure, the non-monitored directories would just be checked for changes on the startup phase. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/176 Title: Enable tracker by default for Unity too To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/176/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1666951] [NEW] time-admin window doesn't install ntp when prompted
Public bug reported: I'm using Xubuntu 17.04 but I don't think this problem is specific to Xubuntu. By default, "Configuration" in "Time and Date Settings" is set to "Manual". If I change the option to "Keep synchronized with Internet servers" I am prompted to "Install NTP support" or to cancel the change. Obviously this is only when the ntp package isn't already installed. Clicking on "Install NTP support" displays a notification window to say that an application is requesting additional packages and that is can be found in "Software". Clicking on that window brings up gnome-software which says that the requested package cannot be found. I'm sure that in the past I was prompted for my administrator password as would be expected when installing software. Although I'm reporting this using a live environment I also saw this with my full disk based installation. [Bug 1666918] [NEW] Issue when creating more than 5 ssh keys
Public bug reported: I am using Seahorse to create and setup new secure shell keys to my servers and other computers. The first five keys are created as expected. When I attempt to create the 6th key I proceed as follows: Press the green + sign Select Secure Shell Key Enter a description for the key Click Create and Set Up Enter my password twice Enter the Server address and login name Click Set Up At this point I receive an error message Couldn't configure Secure Shell keys on remote computer. Received disconnect from 192.168.0.112 port 22:2: Too many authentication failures for ken packet_write_wait: Connection to 192.168.0.112 port 22: Broken pipe If I delete one of the 5 keys I have already created I CAN create a key for this server. The error ALWAYS occurs on the 6th key I attempt to create. Upon investigation I find that the default number of bad attempts to connect to an ssh server is 5. If I up this value on the target server to 6 I CAN create a key for that server in Seahorse. I suspect that in the process of setting up the new key Seahorse is trying all available keys to see if one works for the target server and if not Seahorse will prompt me for my password on the target server. This issue has been in Seahorse for a LONG time. I believe I submitted a bug report on CentOS 6 or perhaps Ubuntu 9.10 several years ago. It is present in the version of Seahorse included with CentOS 7 (Seahorse 3.14.1) as well as the version in Ubuntu Mate 16.04. Please advise if I can provide any additional information. [Bug 1299747] Re: Cannot create PGP key in Ubuntu 14.04
THANK YOU to Thomas for this last comment. Even today, running the 17.04 alpha, I thought I had discovered a bug with keys not being generated - when the real problem is that the interface doesn't tell you it will take time for the key to be generated. After waiting several minutes one of the two duplicate keys I attempted to create appeared in my list. The interface generally needs an update to avoid this problem of user confusion. There may be other problems than confusion as well. Since I created two keys with exactly the same name/info, but only see one in my list, how do if I didn't break the process? Not knowing what happened after kicking off the generation, I as a normal user have no idea if it failed to create the second key or it created both but is only showing one in the list because they're not uniquely named. There are four new files in ~/.gnupg/private-keys-v1.d/... and it looks like the key's listed only once in pubring.gpg... It's technical enough that the sort of person who actually uses the Password and Keys GUI can have no confidence in their key's state after experiencing this situation. I deleted the key to start over, some of my trepidation was confirmed: I was asked for two separate confirmations when deleting the key - so I'm guessing it was one for each duplicate. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to seahorse in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1299747 Title: Cannot create PGP key in Ubuntu 14.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seahorse/+bug/1299747/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1666681] Re: Drop interactive_search.patch (type-ahead search)
** Description changed: Nautilus dropped the popular type-ahead search feature years ago. Ubuntu has been carrying a patch to revert that change. See bug 1164016 for the original LP bug and patch proposal. Nautilus is now under very active development. During the 3.22 cycle, that patch needed to be rebased. I tried to do it and what I came up with caused a crash (it didn't really crash for me, but ricotz and some others experienced it) and the first letter typed activated type-ahead search but the first letter was dropped. In other words, you would need to type "ddow" to activate the Downloads folder instead of just "dow" - like in previous releases. + like in previous releases. (LP: #1635988) I did that rebase in October 2016 and no one has stepped up then to improve the patch. The Nautilus maintainer csoriano has said that the slots and views changed significantly during 3.22 and will likely be refactored more in the future. If there's no one available to maintain the patch, unfortunately, we'll eventually have to drop the patch to not be stuck on an ancient version of Nautilus. I am proposing that we do this at the start of the 17.10 development cycle. This gives 6 months for a developer to step up and try to fix the patch and 12 months before 18.04 LTS. Other Items === - For better performance with the built-in search, we need to reconsider avoiding tracker in Unity (LP: #176) - There is an option in Preferences for users to disable searching in subfolders. I don't think we want to do that by default but maybe it can help some people. The current Nautilus 3.24 packaging is in the GNOME3 Staging PPA with this patch now disabled. https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/ubuntu/gnome3-staging/+packages?field.series_filter=zesty -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/181 Title: Drop interactive_search.patch (type-ahead search) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/181/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too
** Description changed: For Nautilus' built-in search to not be very slow, Nautilus needs to use tracker for search. This is especially important since it's being seriously proposed for Ubuntu 17.10 that we drop the "type-ahead search" patch that reverted the removal of that feature by Nautilus years ago. Apart from the changelog, this looks right. What you have in this diff is: + * Merge with Debian. [Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too
With my obvious tracker maintainer bias, I support the move. Tracker has been slowly but steadily improving in stability throughout the 1.x series, the common complains about CPU and logging have decreased as well from where I stand. Although I also suggest you have a look at the settings and see if vendor overrides might make sense for your users. Tracker is heading now to 1.12.x which according to the current plan will be the last 1.x release series (in preparation for 2.x), it will remain feature frozen but still open to stability and performance improvements. Khurshid: zeitgeist and tracker have little in common. Zeitgeist is about activity tracking, Tracker for these purposes is a filesystem indexer. The usecase being discussed here is nautilus indeed, but having tracker by default could make other gnome apps that strongly rely on Tracker work on Unity, like gnome-music or gnome-documents.
