[Bug 1676918] Re: blackscreen when trying to resume from suspend

2017-03-29 Thread Daniel Holz
Trying Kernel 4.11 since yesterday. So far no blackscreens but I think I
should test it for a longer duration. Unfortunately Kernel 4.11 is no
real solution for me because of another suspend/resume bug that as far
as I can tell at the moment might exist since Kernel 4.9.

It also doesn't fail on bare metal. We have an arm64 porter box
available to us and I did a test build w/dpkg-buildpackage in a chroot.
No failure.

I just also tried Debian unstable's Emacs 25.1 in my PPA and it fails in
exactly the same way, so we can rule out any Ubuntu deltas, as expected.

[Bug 1677370] [NEW] very slow file copying in Ubuntu 16.04 to and from external hard drive

2017-03-29 Thread Dr Stefan Tiron
Public bug reported:

My setup: 16.04 xenial, Kernel : Linux 4.4.0-67-generic
Problem with a WD elements 10A8, a 1 TB large external hard drive 32fat.

After searching for a duplicate I decided to file this bug report while
realizing a lot of the people reporting on the Bug #1208993 reported by
Merlijn Sebrechts on 2013-08-06 probably had the same issue as me (that
bug report seems to mix two separate issues).

My hard drive was working just fine till two weeks ago, when I started copying
about 10 GB of files on it, when I came back it was 50% and still churning
away, the copying seemed to have trickled to zero. Since then I tried to copy
other files (even relatively small ones 700 MG ones) back and forth from it -
and the slowness was maddening. I repeat the drive was fine, just some weeks
ago, and I don't think it is a nautilus issue from what I understand, although
it seems to affect other people.
Still it is not the freezing while copying bug (mentioned above) or the slowing
down in the bar when reaching 90%, mentioned in other reports. It just is slow
from one end to the other, while I never had problems with it before,
everything got suddenly 10x slower. It is also affecting just this one drive
and it is linked to Linux. I tried other usb sticks and drives and I didn't
have this issue. I also tried copying the same files on Windows and the speed
is just fine. So I am not talking about several files or big files, just normal
ones seem to be a problem. Since then the drive is nearly unusable, as I am
having all this data stored but it is just nerve wrecking to try and copy them
even one by one.

Any help or any advice is highly appreciated or redirect to other
[solved] or related known issues.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2017-03-29 Thread Dr Stefan Tiron
My setup: 16.04 xenial, Kernel : Linux 4.4.0-67-generic

I agree it may be two different issues.
Since two weeks I have having a related problem, although it is no the
stuttering/freezing of the system mentioned in #45 (issue 1) while copying
files. No crashing when copying files, just slowness and it never used to be a
problem. It started when I was copying a few large files together and continued
to affect this external hd since then.

At some point copying relatively small files (say 700 mg files) to and from my
WD elements 1TB external drive (even one file at the time) became incredibly
slow. It is not that at some point the bar goes slower as in some versions
where at 99% is seems to slow to a trickle.
It is just slow from the start and continues to be slow till the end. It is
somehow related to this particular external drive since I tried other drives
and they work just fine. I checked it on a Windows and again it works fine so
there is no physical problem with the drive itself. I tried to delete the
files, thinking that's what it is all about, but I am still left with the same
issue. It is a mess.

[Bug 1641308] Re: Partitions display wrong in gnome -disks - ok in gparted

2017-03-29 Thread hockenberry
i fixed the broken link in the original post (dropbox has decided to
break things without notice to the user...), welcome pasteboard.co!

** Description changed:

The partitions displayed by gnome-disk-utility are wrong. When i use
gparted the partitions displayed are correct.

The display became wrong after i deleted 1 partition from the disk using
  gnome-disk-utility.

[Bug 1590590] Re: Touchpad not recognized on Dell Latitude E7470 Ultrabook

2017-03-29 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
As far as I can tell the patch for hwdb sensitivity for Dell Latitude
E7470 is shipped in zesty now.

Is anything else required to have this resolved in zesty? Or hwdb update
is all that is needed here? If that is the case, then we can remove all
the other packages marked as affected and simply SRU the hwdb update.

[Bug 1677305] [NEW] /dev/sda1 is checked at every boot instead of every 31 mounts

2017-03-29 Thread Marco Lazzaroni
Public bug reported:

Every time I login I get the message:

*** /dev/sda1 will be checked for errors at next reboot ***

/dev/sda1 is my root partition. fsck was successfully run, but it looks
like systemd is not aware of this, so fsck will be run again at the next
boot.

The output of LANG=en_US dumpe2fs /dev/sda1 is:

For some reason, "Last checked:" time is not up to date (see above for
the content of /run/initramfs/fsck.log), hence the problem (I suppose).

[Bug 1133477] Re: cut-n-paste move files got stuck forever

2017-03-29 Thread Ben
Thanks again for taking the time.

It's difficult to say exactly the number at which it occurs because
there's a point at which the normal time to copy a small number of files
crosses the point where it is no longer normal to copy lots of small
files. I can say that I've never _noticed_ it with less than 50 files,
but then again - even if it happened with less than 50 files the delay
may have been small enough where I didn't realize the issue happened.
I've definitely noticed it with as few as 50 files. I did some testing
with 20 and 40 files this morning but didn't notice any issue.

This definitely has not occurred in Ubuntu 14.04 using Nautilus
1:3.10.1-0ubuntu8 and previous versions (all the way back to launch). It
definitely never happened with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or 7.04 LTS and any
version of Nautilus included in their stable releases.

I'm almost certain it never happened with Linux Mint 17 and Linux Mint
17 MATE, but I can't say that for certain as I abandoned those distros
pretty quickly after finding it did not meet my needs.

I don't recall which version of Caja originally shipped with Ubuntu MATE
16.04 LTS, but I installed MATE 16.04 LTS on launch day and keep my
packages updated at least weekly, and this issue has been present in all
versions.

[Bug 1629251] Re: Some app-indicators not showing menus

2017-03-29 Thread Matthew Gregg
Running up to date 17.04 and I also have this issue. In my user env
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity is already set, but Electron based apps do not
show a tray/indicator icon. I attempted to set this in /etc/profile.d/
which worked and I had tray/indicator icons, but had the effect of
breaking various Unity things like the control/settings app. Seems like
apps launched from the gnome-session are missing this env?

[Bug 1133477] Re: cut-n-paste move files got stuck forever

2017-03-29 Thread Ben
Apologies for the double comment - but I realized I missed one of your
questions. The size and type of files does not seem to matter. I've had
this happen with text, image, video, and "other" files of sizes from a
couple kilobytes up to several megabytes. I have not tested with a large
number of files of several gigabytes, though I don't imagine it would be
as noticeable since one would reasonably expect those to take a bit of
time to copy normally.

As far as I can tell there are no definite triggers. When I was first
doing a prototype build of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and ran into this bug, I did
a fresh build, updated all packages, and then was able to easily
replicate after a clean boot and nothing running except the file
browser. My current system uses SSD drives only, but I have also
verified on a system with spindle disks.

[Bug 1133477] Re: cut-n-paste move files got stuck forever

2017-03-29 Thread Ben
I just tested this very easily, but unfortunately nothing was recorded
in any of the /var/logs. The steps I used to replicate on a Lenovo P50
running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS (fully updated as of 29 March 2017)

1) Open Caja 1.12.7 (also tested using Nautilus on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS)
2) Navigate to a folder that has 500 text files in it of very small size
(5-10kb is sufficient)
3) Press F3 to open a new pane (or optionally open a new window, doesn't
matter) and navigate to an empty folder on the same drive (or a different
drive, doesn't matter)
4) Highlight most or all of the files in the source directory, and press CTRL-X
(or edit > cut, doesn't matter)
5) Go to the destination pane, and press CTRL-V (or edit > paste, doesn't
matter)

Sometimes, the cut/paste will happen nearly instantly as it should.
Sometimes though, it will take a second or two to start, then spend
between 1 and 20 minutes sitting there, copying the files one-by-one,
very very very very very slowly. This issue is not reproducible using
the 'cp' or 'mv' command line programs.

[Bug 1244548] Re: Keyboard shortcut for changing keyboard layout does not work on lock and login screen

2017-03-29 Thread mori
This worked for me (I'm going to type exactly what i did and this is easiest
method i could explain -don't ask why :| ):
1. Click on "Text Entry Settings..." under EN language icon (or whatever else
if it's not your chosen language)
2. in 'Switch to next source using' >> PRESS "Shift R" then PRESS "Alt + Shift
R" >> text inside this section should be "Shift+Level3 Shift" !
3. in 'Switch to previous source using' >> PRESS "Alt + Shift R" >> text inside
this section should be "Alt + Shift R".
This is weird but worked for me. I tried it on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

[Bug 1677198] [NEW] OpenVPN not Working in 17.04

2017-03-29 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

I can definitely confirm that Network Manager's OpenVPN is not working
yet in Ubuntu 17.04.

I set up my configuration via import:
http://neartalk.com/ss/2017-03-29_001_633x332.png

On all earlier versions of Ubuntu, after importing the configuration,
I'm able to connect to the VPN. However, in 17.04, connection attempt
always give this error immediately:

"The VPN Connection disconnected because the VPN Service has stopped"

Clearly the VPN Service has NOT stopped. I confirmed this be taking the
exact same import-file and imported it into an Ubuntu 16.04 computer and
then the VPN connected without issue. Also, with this same import-file I
had no issues in Ubuntu 16.10.

[Bug 1506166] Re: Bracketed paste should be per-terminal [PATCH]

2017-03-29 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for the patch and sorry for the delay. We're making an effort
to clear out languishing items in the sponsorship queue today.

vte needs fixing in Zesty before we can fix it in older releases. Please
see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure

We also need a working test case for the vte (as opposed to vte3) case.

But I'm trying to get an initial response to as many outstanding
requests today as I can, so I'll move on for now. Please try to follow
the SRU procedure if you can, provide a test case for this fix, provide
debdiffs for all of Zesty, Yakkety, Xenial and if you wish Trusty, and
then resubscribe ~ubuntu-sponsors to the bug when done.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2017-03-29 Thread Michael Heuberger
totally agree with mauro - it is very sad that nothing happens. if this
goes on, i ll have to consider another linux OS for my next machine :(

tried all the suggestions and none worked for me. too many parameters
involved, too complex, impossible to narrow down the issue.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2017-03-29 Thread Mauro
I think this bug report is a bit messy, because it mixes two different
issues.

I think that the original problem is the one I'm experiencing and that is
perfectly described by the StackExchange answer pointed to by Peter Stevenson's
comment #45.
Indeed, setting dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes to low values is the
only way to fix the problem in my case.
Either using low vm.dirty_background_ratio and vm.dirty_ratio or changing the
scheduler to deadline does nothing in my case (by the way, the suggested low
values for vm.dirty_*_ratio parameters seems to have become the default at
least in recent Trusty updates).

The problem described here is not just that the system is slow at
copying many files, but that it stutters and completely freezes (mouse
pointer included) for whole seconds, if not even minutes (last time I
had to leave my PC for about 10 minutes to let a huge file transfer
terminate and be able to even move the mouse pointer again... many other
times I simply switched off the system and restarted). This happens when
copying huge files (some gigabytes in size) to a relatively slow device,
which might by a USB drive or a network drive (when using WiFi, for
instance). And, even if the aforementioned reply and referenced pages
talk about this happening on systems with a lot of RAM, in my case it
happens even if I have only 4 GB of RAM.

Anyway, it's sad to see no words at all from any Ubuntu developer on
this bug report, given that it seems to be a well known kernel issue,
unless I missed something.
