Whatever Gnome has done for years is not the point. I'm talking about a
smooth transition and easy discoverability for current/former Unity7
users. But yeah discoverability is fine per the above methods.

[Bug 1690964] Re: All Settings in Gnome Shell is missing 'Software & Updates' icon

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Personal is supposed to be just one row too but we need to fix bug
1631750 first and then drop language-selector-gnome from the default
install.

I don't see it as a significant omission to not have it in the Settings
app. Ubuntu GNOME has done it that way for years. (We also have Tweak
Tool for even more settings). The first 2 ways to launch it sound good
enough to me unless you can think of a way to make it even more
integrated into GNOME.

2017-05-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks, but that does sound strange...
  Personal: 2 rows
  Hardware: 2 rows
  System: Limited to 1 row?

Ah yes, I can see there are at least three ways to launch Software & Updates
still:
  1. Launch Gnome 'Software' and then find it in the panel menu.
  2. Search apps for 'Software & Updates'
  3. Just execute $ software-properties-gtk

For me this is no big deal but it's a significant omission for regular
Ubuntu users moving from Unity7 to Gnome Shell.

[Bug 1690964] Re: All Settings in Gnome Shell is missing 'Software & Updates' icon

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Bicha
This is basically intentional for a couple reasons.

1. If Software & Updates were integrated into the Settings panel instead
of a separate app, it would make a lot more sense.

2. The current gnome-control-center design does not have any extra room
in the System row. The GNOME Developers hope that the new design will be
ready for GNOME 3.26. The new design is more flexible about number of
panels or subpanels.

Have you considered moving Software & Update settings into GNOME
Software instead?

[Bug 1690966] Re: Gnome Shell elements (power menu, launcher etc) are the wrong colour when using Ambiance (wrong grey, and blue highlights)

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Some other themes ship a theme in /usr/share/themes/THEMENAME/gnome-
shell/ GNOME does not really recommend that distros enable the user-
theme extension by default so we should talk with GNOME to figure out
the recommended way to set a distro's default gnome-shell theme.

[Bug 1690280] Re: Classic confined snaps don't install

2017-05-15 Thread Tyler Hicks
The Details section is not visible on my laptop until I scroll down. I'm
concerned that a warning message in the Details section will go
unnoticed. BTW, that's on 17.04 with gnome-software
3.22.7-0ubuntu3.17.04.2.

I'd like for us to explore if there's a way to get a more visible
warning.

[Bug 1034488] Re: Rename "Aeroplane mode" to "Flight mode"

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I'm closing the gnome-control-center part of this bug. If you disagree,
you're welcome to talk to GNOME about this issue. But since Android,
Apple and Windows all use the term "Airplane Mode", I think you will
have a difficult time convincing GNOME to use a different term.

[Bug 1690948] [NEW] Not able to install off line (or downloaded) snap files

2017-05-15 Thread jonata
Public bug reported:

When I try to install a snap file, Gnome Software shows an alert saying
the file is not supported. The only way to install a snap file is
opening a terminal and calling snap install with --dangerous flag.

It is true that Gnome Software handle the snap installation in a very
intelligent way, using the store and proper channels. But...

- Some developers does not want to be locked to a store in order to distribute
their applications.
- Some softwares cant be made available at a store because of specific purpose,
or licensing, or very specific or restrictive network environment etc
- It is far from being friendly to ask the user to open a terminal in order to
install an application

Snap would be THE solution for computers without Internet but unusable
for users that don't know how to use the command line. I understand that
this can be something bad for security, but Gnome Software could alert
the user he is installing something that is not on the official channel.

Really, being able to install off line snaps is essential for a lot of
users.

Thanks for your attention ;)

[Bug 1690938] [NEW] Allow lightdm to be an alternate recommends for gdm3

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Impact
--
If an Ubuntu user installs gnome-shell, they will be shown a debconf prompt
asking to choose between gdm3 and lightdm. No information is given as to why
one or the other should be chosen.

This can be fixed by recommending gdm3 | lightdm

Test Case
-
>From Ubuntu (Unity), install gnome-shell. gdm3 should not be installed and
>there should be no debconf prompt.

Regression Potential

None really. GDM does look a bit nicer with GNOME Shell than LightDM in 17.04
and older releases but if a user wants GNOME Shell to look nice, they should
just install Ubuntu GNOME. It's not worth the avoidable debconf question for
that.

Other Info
--
This was already done for artful as part of the GNOME transition.

Users will still see a debconf prompt if they install ubuntu-gnome-
desktop but there's not much we can do about that now in SRUs.

All Ubuntu "desktop" flavors except for Ubuntu GNOME and Kubuntu use
LightDM. Kubuntu currently uses sddm, but no one has bothered to get
sddm working with GNOME Shell.

[Bug 1690654] Re: Update button doesn't work in GNOME Software 3.24

Care to try wip/ubuntu-3-24 or wip/ubuntu-master upstream? I noticed
this was broken too and poked into it. I found a few things that I
thought were problems and tried to fix them. I was able to do an upgrade
using the 3-24 branch built using of jhbuild.

It's the commit on top. If it works for you and you want to upload, feel
free to squash / force push / upload. If it doesn't, feel free to
investigate some more and fix. :)

[Bug 1690860] [NEW] systemd-resolved does not use DNS servers from DHCP

2017-05-15 Thread KiberGus
Public bug reported:

Hi. I use Ubuntu 17.04 and I have systemd=232-21ubuntu3 installed. The
problem is that it always uses 8.8.8.8 as DNS server. This is very
disappointing because my mobile operator seems to block the server. And
google knows nothing about my home dns zone, so I can't access my NAS by
dns name. Here is a fragment from my /var/log/syslog upon connecting to
network. I've switched systemd log level to debug. I see that dhcp4
receives correct DNS server (it works), but then systemd just ignores it
and uses 8.8.8.8.

[Bug 1685500] Re: Update gdm3 to 3.24.1

2017-05-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gdm3 - 3.24.1-0ubuntu0.1

---
gdm3 (3.24.1-0ubuntu0.1) zesty; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release (LP: #1685500)
  * Drop git_dont-cache-ignore-wayland.patch:
- Applied in new release
  * Add git_fix-crash-if-session-does-not-start.patch:
- Backport 3.24 commit to fix a crash bug
  * Add git_restore-session-name-override.patch:
- Explicitly set gdm's session-name to 'gnome'. This fixes the login
screen not starting when the default session is set to something else,
such as when a Ubuntu (Unity) user installs gnome-shell and chooses
gdm but does not install ubuntu-gnome-desktop (LP: #1686257)

This bug reminds me of Windows activation. This whole being controlled
from some remote system thing really takes that "free" feeling out of
open source. Next we'll have to fill out requisition forms and provide
proof of our IP location.
