[Bug 1691620] [NEW] Recommend instead of depend on gnome-software-plugin-snap?

2017-05-17 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

When I packaged gnome-software 3.22 for Ubuntu, I had it depend on
gnome-software-plugin-snap because it should be installed by default in
Ubuntu, right?

gnome-software 3.24 now has separate appstream metadata for the various
gnome-software plugins. This allows users to easily enable or disable
addons by clicking the checkbox on the details page for an app. What's
interesting to me is that the Addons don't show up on the Details page
if they are provided in the same package as the app itself.

Today, I moved the appstream metadata for the Snap and Flatpak addons to
their plugin packages. One benefit is it now very easy for someone to
enable Flatpak support.

There's one problem right now. If a user unclicks the checkbox next to
"Snappy Support", gnome-software will be installed since it Depends on
the Snap plugin.

We could:
1) Change Depends: gnome-software-plugin-snap to Recommends:
gnome-software-plugin-snap, or
2) Move the Snap addon metadata back to the gnome-software package so that it
Snap support is not removable in gnome-software

Any objection to #1?

You can't currently sideload a snap (i.e. install a .snap file).

- This requires gnome-software to be subscribed to the .snap mime type
- (MIME type might need to be registered?) and gnome-software to be able
- to extract the snap metadata.
+ This requires gnome-software to be subscribed to the .snap mime type and

[Bug 1685870] Re: [MIR] gnome-shell

2017-05-17 Thread Jeremy Bicha
iio-sensor-proxy is already in main so I have now removed it from this
bug's description.

** Description changed:

  Availability

Co-maintained with Debian GNOME. Built for all supported architectures.

  Changes from Debian
  ---
  - Depend on gnome-session which due to package split now contains only the
session files
  - debian/patches/ubuntu-lightdm-user-switching.patch:
+ Allow user switching when using LightDM. (GNOME wasn't interested in
LightDM support before)
  - debian/patches/ubuntu_lock_on_suspend.patch
    + Respect Ubuntu's lock-on-suspend setting.
  - debian/gnome-shell.gsettings-override:
    + Replace firefox-esr with firefox
  - Lower misc. universe dependencies to suggests (list below)
Ubuntu is also at GNOME 3.24 but Debian is still at 3.22 because of Stretch
Release Freeze.

  Rationale
  =
Ubuntu Desktop will be switching from Unity to gnome-shell as the default
desktop.

  Security

  No known security issues

version of the Adwaita theme)
- - gnome-user-guide (The GNOME upstream version of ubuntu-docs)

[Bug 1643134] Re: Switch gnome-software to use PackageKit backend

2017-05-17 Thread Robert Ancell
commit 8ecc6713380cd6922adfc2892d8282891eedf3ec
Author: Robert Ancell
Date: Thu May 18 09:10:51 2017 +1200

packagekit: Don't explicitly disable PackageKit interactivity

We need interactivity for debconf prompts to install when installing .debs.
This is not most packages (i.e. not normally apps) but some dependencies can
trigger debconf prompts. If PackageKit is set to be non-interactive then
these packages never complete installation and the user is left confused.
The default PackageKit behaviour is to allow interactivity.

[Bug 1685870] Re: [MIR] gnome-shell

2017-05-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
- Despite what is claimed in the bug description; iio-sensor-proxy is still a
Recommend, would need a MIR.
- There appears to be test that could run for gnome-shell, but they aren't
obviously being run as part of the build -- make check does not appear to run
run-tests.sh.
- There are a few older bugs filed against gnome-shell (but perhaps belong
elsewhere) that are confirmed/triaged, but do not appear to have been
upstreamed.

It was simply disabled in GNOME Software and Richard is fine with enabling it:

I tested it and it works fine with this change.

[Bug 1673398] Re: A workaround for making a default monitor in multi monitor environment is not working

2017-05-17 Thread Petr Stochl
I can confirm this.
I have fresh install of Ubuntu 17.04 and nVidia card with 2 monitors, one
rotated. I can configure it correctly in gnome-flashback and generate correct
xorg.conf in nvidia-settings, but the rotated secondary monitor is selected as
primary on login screen and is not rotated.
I "fixed" the annoyance by autologin...

There is also a tip to use /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf and put in
[greeter]
active-monitor=0 (probably 1 in my case)
but there is not such file and i am not sure where to put it.
There seems are some workarounds using xrandr and startup scripts.

It would be nice if this could work again.

[Bug 1025528] Re: Gedit displays garbled overlaid text on long line text file

2017-05-17 Thread Jussi
I'm now using only Linux Mint and I don't quite understand what version
of gedit I'm supposed to have.

Synaptic says latest and installed version is gedit_2.30.5+qiana.

Linux Mint website says: Qiana (3.10.4-0ubuntu4)
https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/gedit

And gedit says: gedit - Version 2.30.4

So, in short the version numbering is so fucked up, it is impossible to
say what I have installed from the repo.

What comes to the bug, it is now different; gedit freezes when opening
that file.

[Bug 1038972] Re: gnome-shell dead-locks when asking for ssh-passwd using sshfs.

2017-05-17 Thread Carl-Johan Kjellander
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

I can reliably get gnome-shell to dead-lock while using gmusicbrowser
with all the music on an sshfs mounted filesystem.

  Steps to reproduce.
Computer A is the desktop, B is the remote server that hosts the filesystem.

  1. On A, mount the remote filesystem on B with sshfs with the option '-o
reconnect'. This will trigger ssh-askpass later.
  2. On A, start gmusicbrowser and set the library to the mounted sshfs
filesystem.
  3. Play a song and pause it.
  4. Remove focus from gmusicbrowser, for instance but putting it on another
workspace.
  5. Reboot B.
  6. Wait for B to come up.
  7. On A, switch to the workspace with gmusicbrowser and the first click you
do, click the settings gear to get the floating window.

  8. Enjoy your dead-lock

When gmusicbrowser gets focus it first opens a floating menu, but also
it triggers a reconnect to the sshfs filesystem since it has a mp3 file
open, and this starts ssh-askpass, which opens a dialog to get your
password, but it cannot get complete focus because of the floating meny
and now displays an alert "cannot get complete focus, maybe someone is
eavesdropping", which cannot be clicked because it can't get focused.

Gnome-shell is completely deadlocked, mouse still moves, but nothing can get
focus, hot corners does nothing, typing does nothing. Killing gmusicbrowser
does nothing, killing gnome-shell restarts it into the same dead-locked state.
The kernel complains that gmusicbrowser is hung for over 120s. Xkill can't
grab the mouse is says.

- You can get out the dead-lock by using 'pkill ssh-askpass' for another
- vt, but that took me a long time to figure out.

[Bug 1643134] Re: Switch gnome-software to use PackageKit backend

2017-05-17 Thread Matthias Klumpp
@jbicha: That was for Ubuntu's aptd GNOME Software backend, using Debconf with
PackageKit is a little different (shouldn't be too hard to add, and I am rather
confident that hughsie would even allow this feature upstream).
So, in Debian we'd need the PK version, as aptd is dead and removed from
Debian. I did run a couple of tests with Debconf-using stuff and GNOME Software
about a year ago, and the behavior then was that the questions didn't get asked
but the transaction also wasn't blocked (as expected).
So, adding proper Debconf support to GS is "nice to have" at this point, but
not essential at Debian.

2017-05-17 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Oh, with "essential" I mean RC-worthy or important-for-the-release. Long
term, we likely do want Debconf to work (I haven't had time to look into
it yet though, that's why I like that Robert apparently looks into it
now).

[Bug 892997] Re: Shell search shows deleted files, duplicates for moved documents

2017-05-17 Thread Dirk Mcbratney
Under 17.04 with GNOME Shell 3.24, the bug seems to have been fixed.
File search works as expected and does not create duplicate entries;
moving a file around to arbitrary places in my Home with recursive
searching enabled, the Shell search immediately finds it when I search
by filename from the Overview.

Thanks for checking in on this!

[Bug 1643134] Re: Switch gnome-software to use PackageKit backend

2017-05-17 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Matthias, are you aware that Ubuntu recently enabled debconf for gnome-
software? (LP: #1679435)

If it's not too hard to get that working with PackageKit, should that be
pushed into Debian stretch now?

[Bug 1643134] Re: Switch gnome-software to use PackageKit backend

2017-05-17 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Richard hates stuff asking questions during installation ;-) - that's *the*
longest discussion we had, since PackageKit's inception:
```
What is Hughsie's law?
A joke that started on IRC late one night in '07. Put formally it is:
Authentication or license prompts can only be done before the transaction has
started, and messages or notices about the transaction can only be shown after
the transaction has completed.
```
(no sure why this isn't on the PK FAQ anymore)

If the aptcc PackageKit backend receives a request to be noninteractive, it
should set the Debconf frontent to `noninteractive` and disable everything that
could potentially ask questions.
This should at least prevent the update process to hang on Debconf prompts.
I guess we could enable Debconf prompts for GS though (maybe make it
configurable, so Fedora and other distros can be non-interactive by default),
as apparently it seems to work okay at Ubuntu for the current aptd backend.
