[Bug 1706476] Re: "julyshakedown" mysterious shadow around window when check marking and option box inside of window.

2017-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. It looks like the glitch might actually be triggered by self-
resizing windows. Does it also happen in Settings? (Try clicking on the
different icons in system settings which resizes the window too)

use them. lol but thank you for the information. i've since deleted it
and i'll just take a video with my phone and get that uploaded to this

I suggest taking screenshots with PrtScn, that will save images to your

Alternatively, if the problem is very brief and difficult to capture

[Bug 1706813] Re: *julyshakedown* gnome-shell RecordMyDesktop fails to open.

2017-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
recordmydesktop is an X app so won't work properly in your Wayland
session (when I tried it it just records the mouse cursor on blackness).
If you want to use than then you will need to choose the "Ubuntu" login
option that is not Wayland.

As for the crashes, those are being tracked in existing bugs that have stack
traces:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/?package=recordmydesktop=week

It appears the only crash affecting 17.10 so far is bug 673171.

[Bug 1694455] Re: Bluetooth: Cannot receive files, due to OBEX configuration

2017-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Per the description:

1. OBEX disabled

This part is bug 1645631, so please remove part #1 of the description
and just mention bug 1645631 instead.

2. OBEX silently fails

Let's make #2 the focus of this bug, so it is not seen as a duplicate of
bug 1645631

** Summary changed:

- Bluetooth: Cannot receive files, due to OBEX configuration
+ Bluetooth: Cannot receive files

** Description changed:

  # Use case

  Ubuntu 17.04, quite fresh installation, updated.

  Bluetooth file transmission

  I want to send files to my smartphone, and receive files sent by my
  smartphone via bluetooth. I pair both devices, initiate file transfer
  from one of the devices, and the other device asks me what to do.

  # Problems

  This is a mix from usability and technical issues.

- 1. OBEX disabled
+ 1. OBEX disabled (bug 1645631)

  The bluetooth file transmission service OBEX was not started. I started and
enabled OBEX:
  `systemctl --user start obex`
  `systemctl --user enable obex`

  ```
  Mai 30 14:47:55 tp systemd[1661]: Starting Bluetooth OBEX service...
  Mai 30 14:47:55 tp obexd[8168]: OBEX daemon 5.43
  ```

- 2. OBEX silently fails
+ 2. OBEX silently fails (this bug)

  After having OBEX enabled, I was able to transmit files from laptop to
  smartphone, yet I could not receive files on the laptop. In the system
  log, you could see that OBEX fails (please note `FORBIDDEN`):

  ```
  Mai 30 14:47:55 tp obexd[8168]: OBEX daemon 5.43
  Mai 30 14:48:04 tp obexd[8168]: CONNECT(0x0), (null)(0x)
  Mai 30 14:48:04 tp obexd[8168]: CONNECT(0x0), (null)(0x0)
  Mai 30 14:48:04 tp obexd[8168]: PUT(0x2), (null)(0x)
  Mai 30 14:48:04 tp obexd[8168]: PUT(0x2), FORBIDDEN(0x43)
  Mai 30 14:48:04 tp obexd[8168]: DISCONNECT(0x1), (null)(0x)
  Mai 30 14:48:04 tp obexd[8168]: DISCONNECT(0x1), SUCCESS(0x20)
  Mai 30 14:48:04 tp obexd[8168]: disconnected: Transport got disconnected
  ```

  I did not receive a popup notification asking me to receive the file or
  not.

  In the file sharing preferences `gnome-file-share-properties`, there is
  a setting to automatically receive files via bluetooth. With this box
  checked, you're finally able to receive files from your smartphone.

  Successful log for comparison:
  ```
  Mai 30 14:55:50 tp obexd[8168]: CONNECT(0x0), (null)(0x)
  Mai 30 14:55:50 tp obexd[8168]: CONNECT(0x0), (null)(0x0)
  Mai 30 14:55:50 tp obexd[8168]: PUT(0x2), (null)(0x)
  Mai 30 14:55:50 tp obexd[8168]: PUT(0x2), CONTINUE(0x10)
  Mai 30 14:56:28 tp obexd[8168]: DISCONNECT(0x1), (null)(0x)
  Mai 30 14:56:28 tp obexd[8168]: DISCONNECT(0x1), SUCCESS(0x20)
  Mai 30 14:56:28 tp obexd[8168]: disconnected: Transport got disconnected
  ```

  # Expected behaviour

  OBEX is started by default to handle bluetooth file transfers.

  If no automatic file receipt is configured, a popup notification asks me
  if I want to receive the file or not.

  If this is not possible, there should be a notification pointing the
  user to the configuration.

[Bug 1706800] [NEW] Cannot unlock screen with a valid password

2017-07-26 Thread A. P.
Public bug reported:

Whether it matters or not, I have a rather complicated setup with a Kaby
lake Thinkpad, dock station and several displays. When I go to lunch I
lock my session. I cannot unlock it once I come back. I enter a valid
password and all controls become disabled as if it is checking the
password right now. However, the screens remain locked even after
minutes of waiting. Ctrl-alt-Fx works and everything else works as well:
I can login there and cat syslog. There usually are some recent messages
about locking inputs. I can reboot gracefully. I probably can restart
the X session (didn't try it). I can come back to the existing X session
after a while and try to re-enter password but that fails with exactly
the same symptoms as my first attempt.

You might want to check

several similar bugs are reported.

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2017-07-26 Thread Davias
Ok I got it! I was about to implement this solution
http://www.calgorithms.com/blog/2014/07/30/fixing-multiple-monitor-
position-in-ubuntu-gnome-14-dot-04/ (thanks for this one, even it was a
patch I did not like to use) when I was enlighted by this: Gnome is not
getting monitor IDs correctly. I have 2 digital BenQ and one analog
Asus. If I run Ubuntu 16.04 (on Gnome Fallback) System settings, they
are identified correctly, albeit in the wrong position (note: right
after login, the monitor position is set correctly for a few seconds,
then when desktop is loaded, is messed up again). So, I execute step 1
of the above solution, deleted monitors.xml, installed gnome-control-
center and run it: the monitors where wrongly identified. I changed
monitor position using the wrong IDs for the monitor, getting them were
I wanted. Then just shut down and re-boot...voilà: after login the
desktop was loaded with correct monitor position for all the 3 monitor!

Hope this can shed some light on this annoying Ubuntu bug...the fact
that Ubuntu system settings/monitor and gnome-control-center IDs monitor
in different ways is clearly the problem. I remember something similar
when using Catalyst Control Center in 14.04 with fgrlx: could not get it
to set it right - then, using system settings/monitor, I was able to fix
it - and it stayed there until the upgrade to 16.04.

2017-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yeah it's a good option to have. I'm just suggesting it should not be
possible to accidentally push volume over 100% by pressing the volume
keys. You should have to enable the option explicitly and it should not
be on by default. Because distortion and clipping may (will?) occur.

This isn't a good answer for people working with laptops, where this
issue occurs the most. I don't want have speakers with me everwhere I'm
travelling :p

Note that this option is already shown in gnome-control-center, just not
available from main UI. The option is off by default and people know
what to expect when they switch it on. It's already available in Unity
since 14.04.

[Bug 1697882] Re: GDM should not allow X11 sessions when NVIDIA's KMS is enabled

2017-07-26 Thread Tim Richardson
What's the bug report for hybrid systems? I can't get gdm working with
modeset=1 (aiming to get PRIME sync working). Is good in lightdm. There
are so many bug reports with similar symptoms.

[Bug 1706542] [NEW] Can only launch Nautilus once in GNOME shell

2017-07-26 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Press super, type "nautilus", type enter
-> nautilus can be only launched once this way, same with any new pinned dash
icon.

This is due to having both nautilus.desktop and org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop,
despite this one having OnlyShowIn=, GNOME Shell converts nautilus.desktop to
org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop, but still think that nautilus.desktop is running
(as nautilus desktop background drawing icons instance), hence no dash icon
unicity between the already present one and this new one.
The older dash icon desktop file was converted as well, but it doesn't match as
in memory it's org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop.

We end up as well with 2 desktop files with identical names in the dash
preference settings.
The easy fix without impacting Unity is to:
1. append to "OnlyShowIn=Unity;" in org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop, "GNOME"
2. add "NotShowIn=GNOME;" in nautilus.desktop
-> that way, only org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop will be matched by GNOME. There is
no transition issue as Unity is matching nautilus to org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop
already, so no transition needed.

That;s even worse. I don't any working screen, no login.
This is not a trivial bug, I think, although I'd be happy for an easy
solution.

[Bug 1505409] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGTRAP in x_io_error() from _XIOError() from _XEventsQueued() from XPending() from gdk_check_xpending() ["Connection to xwayland lost"]

2017-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Weirdly there are practically no crashes reported for Xwayland:
  https://errors.ubuntu.com/?package=xwayland=year

This makes me suspect that gnome-shell might be managing the Xwayland
process and possibly hiding its crashes (including the root cause of
this bug) from errors.ubuntu.com.

[Bug 1706524] Re: Enable switch option to set volume above 100% from media keys and gnome shell UI

2017-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm not sure what >100% means but if it means there might be distortion
or clipping then those would be reasons to not allow >100% by default.

If the volume isn't loud enough by default then maybe the user should
find some form of external amplification (that won't have distortion or
clipping problems that might arise from >100% setting).

Just a guess/concern...

[Bug 1706524] [NEW] Enable switch option to set volume above 100% from media keys and gnome shell UI

2017-07-26 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Some devices have very office-oriented hardware and so, low volume power
speakers.
The normal usage can make the sound unhearable on those configurations.

We added in u-c-c an option to switch it above 100%, per max volume
capability, and unity was picking up this value in its indicator and
u-s-d.

We desire thus to bring the same experience in the new ubuntu GNOME
Shell session: gnome-control-center have a slider enabling setting the
volume above 100%, however, this settings is only available in that
panel, and if you use the media key or the GNOME Shell controls, volume
is reset at 100% at max.

Upstream GNOME doesn't seem to have genuine interests in enabling that feature
(see the discussion on the linked bug report). The proposal is thus:
- only enabling that feature in the *ubuntu* sessions. Don't let the sound
(even if the key was enabled in the ubuntu session) goes above 100% in the
gnome sessions to preserve upstream desired experience.
- reuse the same gsettings key (as long as it's not upstream) as we used to
have. Easy migrations, user's setting preservation and such
- add this switch to gnome-control-center
- modify GNOME Shell agregate menu (volume settings) to represent the % in the
volume slider corresponding to actual setting. We approach this as a distro
patch and not an extension. The extension approach was hacky (overriding a
callback, copying logic), and may work badly with well-designed other
extensions. Hence this untrusive distro-patch.
- patch gnome-settings-daemon volume plugin for respecting this settings in the
global OSD and react to media keys
- add a dependency from the ubuntu-session package on the schema, as reading
the schema is conditioned on the session name.
