Thanks for the information.
I tried that with Ubuntu 17.04 and a Japanese keyboard, it works.

check if nautilus is not operative and in this case, re-use gnome-

[Bug 1660041] Re: wrong keyboard layout in gdm

2017-08-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Ubuntu 16.10 (yakkety) reached end-of-life on July 20, 2017.

However, in 17.10 it appears you can go to:
  All Settings > Language Support
Then configure your preferred language and then click "Apply System-Wide".

If this does not work, then please upgrade to a supported Ubuntu version before
proceeding...

[Bug 1709994] Re: gnome-shell crashes often on unlock / resume from suspend

2017-08-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If just the titlebars disappear then that means you have indeed lost the
window manager. A basic image remains on screen because Xorg is still
running...

Please have a look in /var/crash for *.crash files. And then run ubuntu-
bug on each:

  ubuntu-bug /path/to/your.crash

That should create a new bug with traceable details about the crash(es).
We can't really do anything in this bug without such details.

[Bug 1709780] Re: Screenshots do not work in Wayland session

2017-08-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Further explanation: Legacy screenshot tools that use X11 will not work
in a Wayland session. This is because X has no control over the screen.
It is Wayland rendering the screen. So if you run any legacy
screenshotting tool, it will connect to Xwayland and Xwayland will just
see all black. This is expected and some would say is a security
feature.

As Jeremy said, you need to use different screenshotting techniques in a
Wayland session.

[Bug 1706474] Re: gdm3 nvidia modeset=1 is broken, external screens don't work

2017-08-10 Thread Tim Richardson
Update & simplication.
This bug affects 17.10 & 17.04 with the current LTS support nvidia drivers.
This bug affects both my laptops with nvidia hardware.
External monitors are not necessary to reproduce.

Reproduction is simple.
1. Activate the nvidia hardware using discrete mode. Therefore no intel
graphics hardware is present.

2. Enable the nvidia driver in modeset=1

make a file /etc/modprobe.d/zz-nvidia-modeset.conf
with contents
options nvidia_384_drm modeset=1

3. sudo update-initramfs

4. make sure gdm3 is your display manager

5. reboot

6. attempt to start a gnome session

[Bug 1709994] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes often on unlock / resume from suspend

2017-08-10 Thread hackel
Public bug reported:

It happens very frequently that, after resuming from suspend, as soon as
I enter my password into GDM, gnome-shell crashes. I initially see my
windows appear for a moment (with titlebars, etc.), then gnome-shell
crashes, the titlebars disappear, and I am unable to do interact with
any windows. Eventually gnome-shell restarts itself and the titlebars
and functionality are restored.

This doesn't happen 100% of the time, and I have not been able to find
any correlation. In my syslog, I see lines like:

Aug 10 14:30:49 hermes org.gnome.Shell.desktop[5325]: Window manager warning:
Failed to set power save mode for output VGA-1: Permission denied
Aug 10 14:30:49 hermes org.gnome.Shell.desktop[5325]: Window manager warning:
Failed to set power save mode for output eDP-1: Permission denied
Aug 10 14:30:58 hermes gnome-session[6503]: gnome-session-binary[6503]:
WARNING: Application 'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' killed by signal 6
Aug 10 14:30:58 hermes gnome-session-binary[6503]: WARNING: Application
'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' killed by signal 6

This is on Ubuntu 17.04, gnome-shell 3.24.2-0ubuntu0.1, under Xorg with Intel
HD 4600 graphics. I experience the same crashes under Wayland, making it
*completely* unusable. At least under X I can still recover my session.

This is particularly annoying because whenever gnome-shell dies, it
triggers a separate issue that kills all active Firefox content
processes, requiring me to restart Firefox as well.

If there's a way to get some better debugging info for this, please let
me know.

What app are you using to take screenshots?

With Ubuntu (or GNOME) on Wayland, you either need to use the built-in
screenshot tool or the app needs to make use of the GNOME screenshot
protocols.

[Bug 1292113] Re: CTRL+ALT+T - shortcut to open Terminal is does not work

2017-08-10 Thread Philipp Wrann
This also affects me (running ubuntu 16.04.2)

Remapping the shortcut for the command to some other combination does
not work either.

I had this bug for a long time, then deactivated the shortcut and
created my own shortcut to open a new terminal. That worked for a while
but did stop to work a few days ago.

Last kernel upgrade was 4.10.0-30-generic
