[Bug 735665] Re: Impossible to disable middle-click paste without breaking the middle mouse button

2017-09-06 Thread Mathew Hodson
Support for changing this was added to GTK.

You can create the file ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini with these
contents:

[Settings]
gtk-enable-primary-paste=true

Or you can just use gnome-tweak-tool, which exposes this setting as a
check box.

There is a GNOME bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665193
for changing the default.

[Bug 1594085] Re: Software app very slow to fully start up

2017-09-06 Thread Robert Ancell
Check if there is an upstream bug on
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/page.cgi?id=browse.html=gnome-
software and file one if not. I'm not sure if it's due to the way we're
using it in Ubuntu and it does seem to vary between GNOME Software
versions (so may be considered fixed upstream).

[Bug 1299512] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message()

2017-09-06 Thread Laza
Hi to all.
 Have just recently changed from Ubuntu Xenial amd64 Unity 16.04.3 LTS to
Ubuntu Gnome Xenial amd64 16.04.3 LTS and have started having this "System
program problem detected" keyring error on start up (gnome-keyring-daemon
crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message() ). Have already noticed it as
reported, but because I have used Xenial Unity amd64 LTS 16.04.3 since it`s
release and many other flavours without having any issue with the keyring
error, thought it would be worth mentioning, Have also used many different
release versions of the NVIDIA drivers as well without any effect.
Am currently running with NVIDIA binary driver - version 375.66 from nvidia-375
(proprietary, tested) and will change back over to the X.Org X Server --Nouveau
driver to see if issue persists on future boot ups.
Thanks to all.

[Bug 1706500] Re: Update snap store name "Snap Store"

2017-09-06 Thread Robert Ancell
Decision was made to use "Snap Store" instead of "Ubuntu Store".

** Summary changed:

- Update snap store name "Ubuntu Store"
+ Update snap store name "Snap Store"

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  Currently various things are shown for the snap "Source" field:
  3.20: "Ubuntu Snappy Store" - hard-coded
  3.22 / 3.24: "dashboard.snapcraft.io" - is inferred from the snap metadata
  The officially decided store name is "Ubuntu Store" and this should show in
this field.

  [Test Case]
  1. Open GNOME Software.
  2. Install a snap (e.g. moon-buggy).
  3. Select installed tab.
  4. Look at the "Source" field when looking at the app details.

  Expected result:
- The source is "Ubuntu Store"
+ The source is "Snap Store"

  Observed result:
  The source is something else.

  [Regression Potential]
  Small risk of breaking existing code.

[Bug 1714596] Re: PDF images are blank

2017-09-06 Thread Seth Arnold
Even Rouault has been checking in a huge number of fixes for upstream
openjpeg, and he's been remarkably responsive to Agostino Sarubbo's
fuzzing efforts. I suspect the next time I review the openjpeg codebase
I'll find something far more sustainable than the last time around.

Thanks

[Bug 1573755] Re: Compose and dead keys stopped working with XIM after upgrade to 16.04

2017-09-06 Thread Harald W Griesshammer
ubuntu 16.04 unity: find same problem that .XCompose with alt-right key
works in terminal and terminal-based applications (vi, yes I am that
old) -- but not in firefox, libreoffice, thunderbird, emacs, etc.

In my case, rm -f ~/.config/dconf/user did not work, nor did any of the
other tricks.

Maybe this sheds light on things: my Settings-> Language lists "IBus" as
keyboard input method, but ibus does not run on startup/login. Instead,
ibus-setup starts with message that demon is not running. And yes, I did
follow the proposed fix ("make IBus kbd input method in Languages") --
that did not help. However, after just starting ibus-setup and closing
it again, special characters suddenly work in all applications.

However, just starting ibus from terminal as ibus-daemon -d does not
work.

There are some ibus-setup messages on the terminal:
/usr/share/ibus/setup/main.py:38: PyGIWarning: Gtk was imported without
specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0') before import
to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
  from gi.repository import Gtk
/usr/share/ibus/setup/main.py:39: PyGIWarning: IBus was imported without
specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('IBus', '1.0') before import
to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
  from gi.repository import IBus

Can that bring you closer to a solution?

follow the proposed fix ("make IBus kbd input method in Languages") --
that did not help. However, after just starting ibus-setup and closing
it again, special characters suddenly work in all applications.

However, just starting ibus from terminal as ibus-daemon -d does not
work.

There are some ibus-setup messages on the terminal:
/usr/share/ibus/setup/main.py:38: PyGIWarning: Gtk was imported without
specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0') before import
to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
  from gi.repository import Gtk
/usr/share/ibus/setup/main.py:39: PyGIWarning: IBus was imported without
specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('IBus', '1.0') before import
to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
  from gi.repository import IBus

Can that bring you closer to a solution?

[Bug 1714596] Re: PDF images are blank

2017-09-06 Thread Bryan Quigley
The internal openjpeg parser has been disabled by default and can be re-
enabled by passing --enable-libopenjpeg=unmaintained - I tested this and
it fixes this bug.

It is not only unmaintained and not recommended to use but they mention
having known security issues with the code (and perhaps no plans to
fix*).
https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/poppler/2017-May/012229.html

Adding security team as I'd definitely want their opinion before moving
forward.

*It appears at least one likely related CVE was fixed by security team -
"fix NULL pointer dereference in JPXStream::readUByte" but not
upstreamed.

[Bug 1705157] Re: "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu on Xorg" randomly start the same session (maybe Wayland maybe Xorg)

2017-09-06 Thread Doug McMahon
Don't see any randomness to this at all. The current behavior seen here on a
Fresh install of Mondays image updated -
1st. login after install is always to an ubuntu-xorg session

The login greeter will Always says "ubuntu" no matter what.

Subsequent logins from a reboot or cold boot are always to the session
one exited from previously.

Logging out then in to the other session can produce some mixed info
though the session will be what's picked. Possibly the mixed info is
unimportant?

Note that if on an ubuntu-xorg session because the greeter Always says
ubuntu to actually get an ubuntu session one must switch in greeter from
ubuntu to ubuntu-xorg & back to ubuntu

Examples of mixed info from log out session switching:

Log out from ubuntu-xorg to an actual ubuntu session.

~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
ubuntu

$ env |grep wayland
WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0
XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland

$ env |grep xorg
XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/ubuntu-xorg:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/:/var/lib/snapd/desktop
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/xdg-ubuntu-xorg:/etc/xdg

Log out from an actual ubuntu session to an ubuntu-xorg session.

$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
ubuntu-xorg

$ env |grep wayland
WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0
$ env |grep xorg

DESKTOP_SESSION=ubuntu-xorg
XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/ubuntu-xorg:/usr/share/ubuntu-xorg:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/:/var/lib/snapd/desktop:/var/lib/snapd/desktop
XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP=ubuntu-xorg
GDMSESSION=ubuntu-xorg
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/xdg-ubuntu-xorg:/etc/xdg/xdg-ubuntu-xorg:/etc/xdg

Restarts produce different info

Restart from an actual ubuntu session

$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
ubuntu
$ env |grep wayland
WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0
XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland
$ env |grep xorg

Restart from an ubuntu-xorg session.

$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
ubuntu-xorg
$ env |grep xorg
DESKTOP_SESSION=ubuntu-xorg
XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/ubuntu-xorg:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/:/var/lib/snapd/desktop
XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP=ubuntu-xorg
GDMSESSION=ubuntu-xorg
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/xdg-ubuntu-xorg:/etc/xdg

2017-09-06 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
The errors read like networking or concurrency breaking it.
I agree to have the bug to debug and improve the case.

For now I re-triggered the one hanging test on artful.
The release Team can mark dep8 tests as flaky to skip them blocking a
migration, but that would prereq an analysis of the case as an argument.

[Bug 1594085] Re: Software app very slow to fully start up

2017-09-06 Thread Ads20000
Is there an upstream bug for this somewhere or do we need to file one?
This is a very common problem with GNOME Software, see here
(https://twitter.com/probonopd/status/899740745481015297) for an
example. I run into this bug all the time (as Alan experienced it) and
it makes GNOME Software very painful to use (I just use Terminal anyway,
but with more up-to-date snaps coming onto GNOME Software, the GUI will
become more useful). I think people don't bother saying they're affected
by this bug, they just say that GNOME Software is crap and move on...

[Bug 1713323] Re: HiDPI support partially broken after upgrade to Gnome 3.25

2017-09-06 Thread Rachel Greenham
No wait, I've bethought me, actually. Partly brought on by issues with
nvidia/wayland that weren't immediately obvious - nouveau is actually
working better for me, if noticeably a bit more sluggish.

Regarding your comment:

"I think that GNOME Shell 3.25.90 doesn't really support HiDPI for X,
just for Wayland. That may be a regression, but Hi-DPI support in GNOME
Shell has been redesigned to prepare to support fractional scaling in
Wayland in a future release and it may be a lot more complicated for all
that to work well on X too."

Yes, it is a regression, because it was working for *non* fractional
scaling factors, and should reasonably be expected to go on doing so,
even if it's fed from a different setting. (ie: it's now ignoring
org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor)

At the moment, in the gnome control center 3.25, I'm seeing only these
scaling options on my desktop: 100%, 200%, 300%; and on my laptop only
100%, 200%. So we don't currently have fractional scaling right now
anyway, though presumably they're expected to appear at some point. But
it's rational to expect these non-fractional scaling factors to *go on
working* in xorg, and perhaps for only those scaling factors to be
offered via the user interface when in xorg.

And it so nearly does already. As previously described right now it's
only gnome-shell itself, and non-GTK apps, that are not being scaled in
xorg now, where they were before.

[Bug 1714459] Re: Shell panel font is blurry under wayland

And here is some X11 code guessing the subpixel order. COGL has it hard-coded
on line 329:
  https://git.gnome.org/browse/mutter/tree/cogl/cogl/cogl-xlib-renderer.c#n306

So it looks like a mistake that it works at all on X11. Although I might
be looking at the wrong code...

[Bug 1698270] Re: Totem pauses and stutters during video playback even when CPU usage is low

2017-09-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK, I have now encountered a few reasons for totem stuttering...

1. Excessive/faulty tags parsing (only seen in Big Buck Bunny videos?).
Upstream has fixed the root cause:
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=786561
but we have also patched totem itself in Ubuntu to avoid the issue:
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/3.25.90.1-0ubuntu2

2. Excessive CPU usage of clutter-gtk particularly under Wayland -> bug
1698282

3. Insufficient buffering/parallelism in GStreamer. BBB tends to have a
big stutter when the video bitrate spikes over 11Mbps. I'm not aware of
any other reports of the problem though.

4. My experimental fixes for the high CPU usage of clutter-gtk in bug
1698282 reintroduces an old smoothness problem that only occurs under
the default setting of CLUTTER_BACKEND=gdk (but not with
CLUTTER_BACKEND=wayland or x11). I'll try to fix that somewhere between
bug 1698282 and this one.

[Bug 1696305] Re: High CPU usage in gnome-shell just redrawing the screen (Firefox is running)

2017-09-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears the high CPU of gnome-shell with totem on Wayland at least is
due to the totem app window redrawing at 60Hz seemingly only on Wayland
(bug 1698282). When this happens, the compositor will have to upload
(copy) the window texture from CPU to GPU 60 times per second, which is
CPU-intensive. This would happen with any software ("shm") surface that
is large and redrawing frequently. So I guess that might include Firefox
too.

[Bug 1698282] Re: Totem uses dramatically higher CPU than any other video player

2017-09-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Another prototype fix done, this one more likely to be accepted upstream:
https://git.launchpad.net/~vanvugt/ubuntu/+source/clutter-gtk/commit/?id=eef8eb07e2516d08a984f8128a308943de0d0902

but not until I figure out the smoothness issue separately (visible in
gnome-maps panning at least).

when not using openjpeg poppler has its own parser, maybe there is a bug
in that code, would be worth upstreaming in any case

[Bug 1715157] Re: Ubuntu software center won't install updates.

2017-09-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
