[Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)

2017-09-26 Thread Mohammad Anwar Shah
I am using 17.04 and don't have texlive installed or any fonts in
/usr/local. But still this happened. Needed to use `sudo aa-complain
evince`

And yes, "some font thing failed" is an worst kind of debug info I've
seen.

[Bug 1719720] Re: [LTCTest][libvpd] Process '/bin/touch /run/run.vpdupdate' failed with exit code 127

2017-09-26 Thread Steve Langasek
'MemoryDenyWriteExecute=yes' is defined in systemd.exec(5) as:

If set, attempts to create memory mappings that are writable and
executable at the same time, or to change existing memory mappings to
become executable, or mapping shared memory segments as executable are
prohibited. Specifically, a system call filter is added that rejects
mmap(2) system calls with both PROT_EXEC and PROT_WRITE set, mprotect(2)
system calls with PROT_EXEC set and shmat(2) system calls with SHM_EXEC
set.

It is surprising that /bin/touch should trip this check. This will
require investigation.

[Bug 1286578] Re: Standard (non-admin) users can't connect to new wireless networks on GNOME Shell

2017-09-26 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
** Description changed:

- When you install Ubuntu 13.10 or 14.04, the first account is the admin
- account. The admin account can connect to new wifi connections just
- fine without needing the admin password. When the admin account creates
- a standard non-admin, that non-admin account when it tries to connect to
- new wifi connections, pops up a dialog box asking for the admin
- password. Non-admin accounts can not connect to new wifi connections
- without the admin account. Does this present a security flaw as the
- only solution is to make all accounts admin or having everyone know the
- admin password. My sister is the admin account for the laptop and she
- can connect just fine. I however is only just a non-admin account and
- everywhere I go I am asked for the admin account everytime I want to
- connect to wifi at Starbucks or any other place.
+ When you install Ubuntu-GNOME 14.04 or 16.04, the first account is the admin
account. The admin account can connect to new wifi connections just fine
without needing the admin password, but:
+ 1. Create a standard (non-admin) user, then log-in with non-admin account and
try to connect to new Wi-Fi connection with non-admin account and a dialog pops
up asking for the admin password :(
+ 2. Non-admin accounts can not connect to new wifi connections without the
admin account :(

- I should note that wired ethernet connections work just fine, however it
- is annoying to find some business that has wired ports and some have
- none at all :(
+ This present a security flaw as the only solution is to add all users to
+ netdev group or make all accounts admin (or having everyone know the
+ admin password).

+ Wired ethernet connections work just fine for non-admin users, however

[Bug 1716277] Re: Moving a file to another folder, holding shift key, blocks mouse pointer

2017-09-26 Thread Ldx
Same issue on my Ubuntu 17.10 beta, freshly installed (no upgrade).

Just for completeness, this behaviour happens by just dragging a file
from desktop to any other window of nautilus (no shift key necessary).

Dragging from nautilus to desktop works.
Dragging from nautilus to another nautilus windows works.
Cut/Paste from/to desktop works.

It's the dragging action from desktop that looks flawed.

If useful, here is a screen recording that shows the issue (well, the
initial mouse drag and subsequent click attempts are not clearly visible
but I think that one can get the idea of the problem):

I have seen these messages logged more often when we do any hotplug

Ok. .this is the continuation of LTC #144627 / Launchpad #1682774.

As suggested in that bug, we did change udev script to create temporary
file under /run and that patch is available in ubuntu 17.10.

Looks like this is udev script issue. If I modify systemd-udevd like
below it works fine.

I've limited udev knowledge. I don't know if you have any other better
solution to this issue.

Daniel, could you attach some screenshots to show the brokenness?

The patches could probably be updated to not change the UI on
Elementary.

Mainly the issue for us is that it appears quite broken. It would be
preferable to use the upstream version of the application's UI.

[Bug 1716357] Re: a typo in evince-previewer.desktop breaks /etc/mailcap

2017-09-26 Thread Kenrick Bingham
Please observe that this bug causes all lines in /etc/mailcap after the
broken line to be skipped. Therefore it also prevents other mime type
files from being opened by the intended application.

(In my case, I ran into this because alpine start saying that it did not
know how to handle files of type Application/VND.OPENXMLFORMATS-
OFFICEDOCUMENT.WORDPROCESSINGML.DOCUMENT, even though /etc/mailcap
contains the proper line, evoking soffice.)

Would this raise the importance of the bug?

[Bug 1719002] Re: Using gdm3 causes plymouth to ficker to/from VT text

2017-09-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm told that the *dm tells plymouth (the boot progress screen) to stop.
So that's probably what the flicker is related to.

[Bug 1719128] Re: Automatic login works only for wayland session

2017-09-26 Thread Alex
Ok: I use default kernel (log above) and "default" (from PPA) binary drivers
(384.90) and I'm on Xorg (default modeset=0) and here autologin doesn't work.
If Nvidia supports Xorg by default why then it doesn't work?
I've made test with wayland just out of curiosity, changed to modeset=1,
rebuild initramfs, reboot logged in run nautilus and then *reverted* changes.
And I've noted it here because I though it might be somehow related (I usually
do this to help devs). I'm not trying to run Xorg on drivers set to wayland.
So:
- I'm on default setup and autologin doesn't work
- autologin switch gets reset after setting it to enabled and restart session
- wayland session was only test because I wanted to check it out
- autologin works when I'm on virtualbox with Xorg
- autologin options are enabled in custom.conf (gdm3)

I can try to uninstall nvidia binary and check neuveau, should I try to
do this?

[Bug 1719668] [NEW] UIFe, white backgound for list

2017-09-26 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Upstream stated that it's the way it should be so it's somewhat a bug
fix in our theme, it also improves readability

The theme should be updated but we don't want to land changes that could
impact other softwares that late in the cycle so we propose doing it as
a g-c-c patch for artful and update the theme next cycle

2017-09-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
AFAIK this is not a bug :(

The NVIDIA driver only supports Xorg or Wayland, but not both.

By default it only supports Xorg. And if you have added modeset=0 then
it only supports Wayland. So yes we would expect Xorg logins to fail
while you have modeset=0.

[Bug 1713323] Re: HiDPI support partially broken after upgrade to Gnome 3.25, 3.26

2017-09-26 Thread Rachel Greenham
I'm looking forward to seeing how much the upstream changes fixes all
these. Yes, I also saw some of the other transient effects noted above;
the gnome-shell text part of it was just the bit I managed to isolate
and find consistency in. :-)

I had seen the need to apply scaling twice - sometimes, and titlebar
text being unscaled at first, but fixing itself before long, I think
after some particular thing happens that I haven't yet identified. (I
think going to activities view and back fixed it, for instance, but not
sure about that yet.) Some apps still having small text was "fixed" by
setting the old scaling-factor setting, but I knew that wasn't a proper
fix, just hoped it was an observation that might help someone narrow it
down. IIRC I think one of the upstream bugs mentioned relates to that
already.

TBH I never did see any point in changing the text-scaling-factor
setting (the font size multiplier in gnome tweak tool). It just makes
the text that already is right go wrong, so I never found it to be
useful. My only mention of it was to show how the problem, for me
anyway, only affected gnome-shell *text*.

[Bug 1719576] [NEW] Gnome-screensaver process keeps running after it's uninstalled

2017-09-26 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Steps:

1. Run Gnome (see note)
2. apt remove gnome-screensaver
3. Let the screensaver lock the screen
4. Try unlocking

Screen unblanks but the screensaver does not prompt for password and
there is no easy way to resume working.

Note:
Really I ran Cinnamon with both cinnamon-screensaver and gnome-screensaver
running (they should block eachother!) causing two lock screens. I uninstalled
gnome-screensaver as guided somewhere, but the actual process wasn't killed.

Fix for the bug is that the prerm script should kill remaining gnome-
screensaver processes and/or gnome-screensaver should unlock if it
detects it has been removed and cannot operate anymore. This should be
tested well as it poses a security risk.

[Bug 1713323] Re: HiDPI support partially broken after upgrade to Gnome 3.25

2017-09-26 Thread Fusion
with the-minute-before-updates, including nvidia 384-90, topbar's text
(where the clock lays down), dash's text changes in a chaotic way
through gnome-tweak-tool. When I change the values, it changes in a
normal way only the already correct text size (like nautilus text and
gnome-tweak-took's window-text).

windows title's text: correct (normal changing)
topbar's text, dash's text: wrong (chaotic changing)

Issue: Chaotic changing. The size of the text on dash and the size of
the text and size of topbar changes in a very strange way. From a value
to the next it can be either normal, tiny in a random way. For example
when change from value 0,81 to 0,80.. 0,81 is tiny and 0,80 is normal.
But after some changes maybe both 0,8 and 0,81 be tiny or normal or
otherwise. That is happening at all values between 0,80 and 1,00 that I
checked. At start I tried to find a pattern and put here the values that
happened, but there are not such values, if I change the values from 0,8
to 1,0 I get different result than if I change them from 1,0 to 0,8.
