[Bug 1720736] Re: Consider changing "Activities" text to Ubuntu icon image by default for brand recognition

2017-10-02 Thread Jesse
@Andrea definitely, it's just an opinion, and I do appreciate the reply.

I do understand your point of view: that it's an important factor that
the Ubuntu-modified GNOME shell matches with the GNOME documentation. If
congruency of the "Activities" button text is more important than the
look or layout, then by all means carry on.

For those of us users, however, who don't like it and would like to
change it, none of the GNOME extensions are working with the gnome-shell
package, though they seem to work with the gnome-shell in the gnome-
session package.

Do I need to file a separate bug against that package for the extensions
that aren't working?

[Bug 1720736] Re: Consider changing "Activities" text to Ubuntu icon image by default for brand recognition

2017-10-02 Thread Jesse
** Description changed:

On June 6th I ran a poll on Ubuntu's Google+ community asking if users
thought the "Activities" text looked better in the top-left of the
screen for the Activities button, or the Ubuntu logo (traditional or
modified to fit the top panel style).

  Here are the results:
  https://plus.google.com/+JesseDuBordFilms/posts/LEjy6zxmNw3.

Out of 169 participants, 87% thought the icon would look better.

- Wanted to officially bring it to the table for consideation.
+ Wanted to officially bring it to the table for considertion.

  Benefits being:

  - Less ambiguous (the word "Activities" doesn't immediately depict the
button's purpose or function to the user, in my opinion).
  - Greater recognition for the Ubuntu brand. Nowhere on the default desktop
does it show the Ubuntu logo, I think this is a greatly missed opportunity.
Even Unity had the Ubuntu logo prominently on the top button of the dash.

I feel like this warrants some consideration on the marketing and design
  team's end.

[Bug 1716265] Re: Disabling screenlock has no effect

2017-10-02 Thread Doug McMahon
I believe *maybe* this isn't an issue any more,
Fresh install, disabled auto lockscreen
Let screen blank, woke up
While it didn't go directly to Desktop it didn't go to a security lockscreen.
Went to that lockscreen image?, then pulling up showed the desktop.

As far as suspend, it always goes to the security lockscreen but maybe
that's intended behavior.?

[Bug 1623666] Re: iOS device contents not displayed in Ubuntu

2017-10-02 Thread William F Hammond
I've had success with newly installed 16.04.3 LTS following steps 8 - 11
given in #44 after installing the October 2016 ppa for 16.04 from Martin
Salbaba. That is, my first 3 steps were:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:martin-salbaba/ppa+libimobiledevice
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

After retrieving my photos and before disconnecting the iPhone, I
suggest

  idevicepair unpair
fusermount -u x (where x is the "mount point").

One more note: I was running the Mate Desktop. When I connected the
(unlocked) iPhone, the program "Shotwell" appeared. I did not want to
use it. The alternate selection was Caja (Mate's file manager similar to
Nautilus), but Caja was not seeing the phone. (The command lsusb was
seeing the phone.) I selected "unmount" in the requester offering
"Shotwell" just in case Shotwell did have access before I proceeded to
use idevicepair.

I seem to have a solution that is satisfactory for me -- especially
because I want to have command-line access to the photos, and using
idevicepair and ifuse makes the mounted location of the photos quite
explicit to me since I specify the mount point.

I do think, however, that many LTS desktop users will want something
such as what Mate purports to offer.

I also completely fail to understand why Apple thinks that lightening
port access to the small user portion of the iPhone filesystem requires
either SSL or TLS. (Might this be explained by an alternate route
"through the air"?)

Thanks for the reply.

I've not really worked with translation context before but I think I did
it right. I uploaded my change to our packaging repository but not to
Ubuntu yet.

I only added context to the Ubuntu dock strings Left, Right and Bottom.
If you need context added to the Mouse strings, please file a bug with
GNOME.

[Bug 1719462] Re: [Translation] "Left" and "Right" must be translated differently in different contexts

2017-10-02 Thread Doctor Rover
Jeremy Bicha, thank you for giving attention to this bug report.

The situation is as follows. In the GNOME Control Center (Settings
application), there are two panels involving "Left" and "Right": 1) Mouse &
Touchpad; 2) Dock.
In Mouse & Touchpad panel, "Left" and "Right" correspond to Primary Button
setting (settings_mouse_touchpad.png). In Dock panel, "Left" and "Right" are
for Position on Screen (settings_dock.png).

In Rosetta there is only one item to translate for "Left" in these both
contexts and only one item for "Right" (translations-launchpad-
net_gnome-control-center.png). But in Russian, "Left" and "Right" in
these two contexts (Mouse and Dock) must be translated differently.

So we need two different "Left"s to translate in two different contexts
and two different "Right"s.

> Do you have a suggestion for the context string we could add?
How about these strings for the two contexts?
1) Option for the mouse primary button
2) Option for the Ubuntu Dock position on screen

[Bug 1720250] Re: im-config configuration ignored with gdm3

2017-10-02 Thread Iain Lane
ok, I had a look at the unit

  - basic.target is quite basic, it happens for every user session. If the
first session is a SSH login then we'll execute im-config when we probably
shouldn't.
  - PartOf=graphical.target will be necessary when we get back to launching the
UI under systemd (hopefully in 18.04), please don't drop it
  - Maybe this isn't a problem with basic.target, but it will be when we use
graphical-session-pre.target - type=oneshot will mean that this is executed on
every login
  - Same, maybe ok with basic.target --- there's no way to clear the variables
and they won't be scoped to there being a graphical session (existing bug with
the unit?)

Thought - what about putting a script in /etc/profile.d? basically doing
what the unit would do, but make sure to case it on $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
being nonempty or something, so it doesn't run for shell logins.

I think you misunderstood the nature of my observation. The modified package in
the PPA works out of the box via the system level symlink:

/usr/lib/systemd/user/basic.target.wants/im-config.service

So no need to set a symlink in the users' HOME.

Maybe it's not a problem at all. I just noticed a difference.

Ok. I first thought it was a side effekt of the new im-config.service file, but
now I realize it's not. Then it's probably not related to im-config at all, but
rather ibus/wayland/whatever.

As my understand, user session unit is enabled by symlink on
~/.config/systemd/user/.
If there is not symlink on the directory, "is-enabled" command will show
"disabled".
"/usr/lib/systemd/user" is vendor preset directory, and just show "vendor
preset: enabled".

If you exec "systemctl --user preset", it will create symlink on
~/.config/systemd/user.

[Bug 1720696] Re: Sound volume notification jumps left and right when changing volume

2017-10-02 Thread Michal Predotka
Maybe that's somehow related to graphics driver. I've tested on my

Also I'm not able to install gnome-session:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt install gnome-session

Package gnome-session is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

[Bug 1720695] Re: Two different icons for sound volume

2017-10-02 Thread Didier Roche
Thanks for reporting this bug and help making ubuntu better!

This bug is an upstream one in Adwaita icon I guess, but still good to test:
- installing the gnome vanilla session (sudo apt install gnome-session), reboot
and switch to the "GNOME" session in GDM.
- you should have the Adwaita theme there. Check if you can reproduce the bug
- please report here if you can reproduce it. If there is a bug in that
session, do you mind filing the bug against upstream bugzilla in gnome-shell?

gnome-contacts and epiphany-browser are not included in any Ubuntu

(for reasons I mentioned briefly earlier on this bug). I am willing to
revert the file-roller change for 17.10 and postpone eog and evince to

On login with this 4K screen (and after bug #1717272 was fixed), desktop
scale setting is set to 200% as I'd wish, and gnome-shell is scaled
correctly. But the text of the Rubbish Bin icon on the desktop, and the
windows of, for instance, Files, Software and Terminal, are all
unscaled. (See screenshot.)

When I launch gnome-tweaks, all these other windows immediately become
correctly scaled, and everything remains properly scaled for the
remainder of the session. Note, I haven't *changed* any settings in
gnome-tweaks, all I did was *launch* it. (See second screenshot, which
it looks like I need to attach to a reply as I can't see how to attach
two screenshots to the OP.)

(In between the two screenshots I also launched the main settings
control panel. Launching this doesn't do anything AFAIK, I was just
checking what the default desktop scaling was - and it was 200%, though
this might not be a dconf thing and thus survives from before the
reset.)

This seems only to affect Gnome/Ubuntu sessions under Xorg, not Wayland.
I was experiencing this before the dconf reset on two machines, one with
nvidia graphics, one with intel iris graphics, so this one, at least,
seems not to be an nvidia-related issue.

It looks like some value relating to scaling, that affects many apps, is
not properly set in Xorg until gnome-tweaks is launched and presumably
explicitly refreshes things.

Note, a comment on an earlier bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/+bug/1713323/comments/12 asked about whether launching gnome
tweaks changed anything. For me at the time it didn't, so I said so and
it seemed unrelated to *that* issue, but I am now seeing it relating to
this issue, so wanted to report it clearly as a separate thing -
especially seeing as that issue was eventually marked a duplicate of
another which has been resolved, whereas this issue still clearly is not
resolved.

[Bug 1720754] [NEW] rhythmbox doesn't show up headerbar in ubuntu session

2017-10-02 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

No headerbar plugin extension enabled despite for it being the default
in rhythmbox. This is due to the per-session override not working for
the way rhythmbox access the value.

We need to reset it as well for people who already installed the beta or
before and upgrading.

[Bug 1720256] [NEW] Wrong display of fonts in Gnome Tweak Tool after installing cantarell fonts

2017-10-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When cantarell fonts are installed, Gnome Tweak Tools shows as if
"Cantarell" was the font being used when it is actually "Ubuntu". Before
that, it showed "None".

[Bug 1720745] [NEW] connecting to a WPA-enterprise network from gnome-shell opens up the "Networks" panel instead of the Wi-Fi panel

2017-10-02 Thread acllos
Public bug reported:

When selecting a WPA-ENTERPRISE Network for the first time, using gnome-shell
"select network" popup, gnome-control-center is automatically started with the
"Network" panel open.
But in gnome 3.26's new control center this panel only lists Wired, Mobile
Broadband, VPN connections and Network Proxy setup.
WiFi configuration has been moved to a separate "Wi-Fi" panel, which I think
should be opened instead.

[Bug 1720736] [NEW] Consider changing "Activities" text to Ubuntu icon image by default for brand recognition

2017-10-02 Thread Jesse
Public bug reported:

On June 6th I ran a poll on Ubuntu's Google+ community asking if users
thought the "Activities" text looked better in the top-left of the
screen for the Activities button, or the Ubuntu logo (traditional or
modified to fit the top panel style).

Here are the results:
https://plus.google.com/+JesseDuBordFilms/posts/LEjy6zxmNw3.

Out of 169 participants, 87% thought the icon would look better.

Wanted to officially bring it to the table for consideation.

Benefits being:

- Less ambiguous (the word "Activities" doesn't immediately depict the button's
purpose or function to the user, in my opinion).
- Greater recognition for the Ubuntu brand. Nowhere on the default desktop does
it show the Ubuntu logo, I think this is a greatly missed opportunity. Even
Unity had the Ubuntu logo prominently on the top button of the dash.

I feel like this warrants some consideration on the marketing and design
team's end.
