Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please execute the following command only once, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 1737083

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1737087] [NEW] general protection in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5400.1

2017-12-07 Thread David R. Hedges
Public bug reported:

Shortly (<=10s) after connecting my [Android] phone via USB, and
attempting to type in Thunderbird, my screen froze for roughly two
minutes (no input apparently accepted or display updates), and then
kicked me out to log in to a new session. (I was also able to ssh into
the system while the UI was hung.) The general protection error appeared
in dmesg and syslog at [apparently] the time of the UI lock-up.

Hi Dale,

Apologies for not replying sooner to this. I know you've put this on the
agenda for this week's Tech Board meeting, and I'm only now posting my
follow-up questions, which will give you practically no time to collect
answers. Still, I'm posting here so that we have a record of the questions,
and we can discuss further as necessary both during the IRC meeting and
afterwards.

This post did see some discussion during the previous TB meeting, and the
main concern raised is whether this project is sustainable. All of our
flavors have upstreams for their desktop components that have a demonstrated
track record of maintaining this software. We certainly cannot expect a
desktop such as Unity to continue to work without developers actively
working on the software.

Which source packages in the archive are you proposing that this package
will maintain as part of this flavor? Which source packages are you relying
on others to maintain?

Does your team have an existing track record of uploading to the Ubuntu
archive those packages that you will be maintaining? Which source packages,
and which members of your team? Are the members of your team who have done
these uploads committed to carrying this work forward? (To be specific: I
see several members on your team who are Canonical employees and may be
emotionally invested in the project, and have uploaded these packages in the
past when they were maintained by Canonical; but this does not necessarily
mean they are personally committed to shouldering this work going forward.)

Who on your team has upload rights to the packages in this set? Who are you
proposing should have upload rights?

[Bug 1714653] Fw: Fw: MOTU

Hey Dale,

Hi Will,

Again .. here are the packages:

ubuntu-unity-desktop

ubuntu-settings

from the ppa

Since I'm missing some context could you tell me the "what" there? Those
packages need...(I'm going to guess "sponsoring", but if that's the case did
you go through the normal process/ubuntu-sponsors)?
Also what ppa are we talking about?

"But I am talking about ubuntu-unity-desktop and ubuntu-settings package
from ppa. How can we move those to universe? Usually we need to go
through MOTU where we need to find a member of Motu who can upload to
archive, but in this case can we ping Martin? He can review it and has
upload access to archive."

ubuntu-unity-desktop is a new package from what I can see and should go
to universe if uploaded to the ubuntu archive but ubuntu-settings is a
package in main used by Ubuntu Desktop so it's going to stay there ...
why would you like to move it to universe exactly?

Cheers,
Sebastien Bacher

Hi Seb,

here is the ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity7maintainers/unity7-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-unity-desktop

at https://launchpad.net/~unity7maintainers

"seb:

Hi,

Where is this discussion going on? On #ubuntu-desktop ? It would be
better if I can join the discussion directly.

We need two packages in the universe:

A) ''ubuntu-unity-desktop". This is the meta package required a fully
functional unity-desktop.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/1736994

B) unity-settings. There is no "ubuntu-settings". There is only unity-
settings which I decoupled from ubuntu-settings. See this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-settings/+bug/1735998

ubuntu-settings stays in main. We have nothing to do with it. Once
unity-settings move into universe I open a merge-request to drop unity
related code from ubuntu-settings.

Let me know if anything else is required.

Thanks.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2017-12-07 Thread bodhi.zazen
Obviously Phillip you are shooting off your foul mouth without knowing a
dammed thing you are talking about. It is obvious from your comments you
know nothing about wayland or wayland security and that you are just
spewing shit on the bug report.

Wayland , upstream, does not and will not support running graphical
applications, as root, from the terminal using sudo , period, end of story.
There are other mechanisms to grant graphical applications root access, but
again the application itself is not going to run as root.

Perhaps you should read the documentation and security discussions before
you put your foot so far into your mouth it comes out your ass and back in
again.

https://lwn.net/Articles/589147/

http://www.mupuf.org/blog/2014/02/19/wayland-compositors-why-and-how-to-
handle/

https://lwn.net/Articles/517375/

And if you take your fat head out of your ass and look upstream you will
see every bug files against wayland regarding the problem of running
graphical applications with sudo has been closed as either not a bug or
wont fix.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99371

"Wayland dont support sudo users!"

Status :
RESOLVED
NOTOURBUG

The is not all in any way claiming you can not run graphical apps as root,
you just need to use another method.

And your comment has nothing to do with running graphical apps in X .

[Bug 1713586] Re: gnome-software displays wildly inaccurate estimate of package size when a certain deb file is double-clicked in nautilus

2017-12-07 Thread Neil McPhail
I installed gnome-software-common_3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.7_all.deb,
gnome-software_3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.7_amd64.deb and ubuntu-
software_3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.7_amd64.deb. I cannot locate the original
deb which cause the problem but I tried robert-ancell's test package
before and after the new packages. I can confirm the bug is fixed for
me.

Thanks!

When/if GParted is ported to gtk3, THEN the work around can be removed.

In the mean time the xhost workaround enables people to continue using
GParted.

[Bug 1737037] [NEW] Videos freeze with no loading circle

2017-12-07 Thread Ads20000
Public bug reported:

I've noticed that videos freeze in Web (they don't on other browsers
e.g. Chromium 62) with no loading circle - implying that Web is
struggling to run them. This is a bug because they should 'just work'.

For examples, see the video on this page (the problem seems worse when
the video is embedded rather than using the direct link):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Tajiri or try watching twitch.tv
videos.

[Bug 1737035] [NEW] 'Unknown' entries in the Ubuntu Dock when playing video

2017-12-07 Thread Ads20000
Public bug reported:

When playing videos in Web, two Unknown entries (or more, if you close
the video and open it again without closing the tab) come up in the
Ubuntu Dock (in Ubuntu 17.10's GNOME session). See, e.g., the video on
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Tajiri (if you go to the link of
the video, rather than the overlay, then only one Unknown entry appears
and it disappears when you pause the video). See also twitch.tv videos.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

$ sudo su
root@mycomputer:/home/me# gedit
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

(gedit:4492): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

=
And that's the problem here. When gparted is ported to gtk3, the xhost
workaround will stop working. And there's no incentive for GNOME to fix apps to
run as root under XWayland, if they won't be able to under Wayland. GNOME wants
to *encourage* apps to upgrade from gtk2 to gtk3 to get native Wayland support,
better HiDPI support and several other features and improvements.

Therefore, I'm closing this bug. Sorry.

[Bug 1735561] Re: Segfault in libglib-2.0.so caused by rhythmbox

2017-12-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

2017-12-07 Thread Phillip Susi
No, it is NOT the new standard since as I have said, wayland apps have
no issue running as root. Applications will NOT be totally rewritten to
split off the parts that need root into a separate program. YOU stop
changing the title, YOU are being a nuisance: this does not just affect
gparted. In fact, gparted has now worked around the issue by
automatically running xhost to fix the broken configuration.

Jeremy, you can easily see it is true by simply suing to root and
running any native wayland ( gdm3 ) application ( like gedit ). It
works just fine.

As long as gdm3 continues to NOT perform the Xauthority configuration
its man page says it is supposed to, it is a bug in gdm3.

[Bug 1736955] [NEW] dep8 test systemd-fsckd fails on s390

2017-12-07 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

The systemd-fsckd test has a constraint of isolation-machine, among
others. Until recently, that actually prevented it from running on s390
because we were using containers for it.

About 3 weeks ago, apparently we started using VMs for s390 dep8 tests,
so that constraint was finally satisfied and systemd-fsckd started to
run. And to fail consistently, as can be see in
http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/s/systemd/artful/s390x:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/tmp/autopkgtest.PrPiv9/build.iis/src/debian/tests/systemd-fsckd", line
267, in
boot_with_systemd_distro()
  File "/tmp/autopkgtest.PrPiv9/build.iis/src/debian/tests/systemd-fsckd", line
243, in boot_with_systemd_distro
enable_plymouth()
  File "/tmp/autopkgtest.PrPiv9/build.iis/src/debian/tests/systemd-fsckd", line
224, in enable_plymouth
plymouth_enabled = 'splash' in open('/boot/grub/grub.cfg').read()
FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/boot/grub/grub.cfg'

There is no grub for s390, so this test must be adjusted or skipped in
that architecture.

[Bug 1736820] Re: Laptop doesn't suspend on lid close

2017-12-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher

"Dec 06 20:41:51 hostname /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[4631]: (II) config/udev:

Dec 06 20:41:51 hostname /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[4631]: (II) This device
may have been added with another device file."

unsure if that's the issue though

could you provide those details

- the output of "systemd-inhibit --list"

- edit /etc/xdg/autostart/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.desktop and
change the exec line to look like

Exec=/usr/libexec/gsd-power -v

log out and back in again (or reboot) and then reproduce this. After a
failed attempt attach the full output of 'journalctl -b' to this report.
