[Bug 1782152] Re: GDM blocks SIGUSR1 used in PAM scripts

2018-07-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It does appear SIGUSR1 is special:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/blob/master/daemon/gdm-server.c
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/blob/master/daemon/main.c

Next, please report the problem to the Gnome developers here:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues
and then tell us the new bug ID.

But this issue is reproducible with any clean bionic desktop install
(since GDM needs to be the login managed).

It is NOT reproducible if I switch back to lightDM.

[Bug 1782275] [NEW] Conflict between resolvconf and systemd-resolved dhclient scripts

2018-07-17 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

I am setting up an Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) system with ifupdown instead of
netplan, as the latter does not meet my needs. I am using resolvconf to
update /etc/resolv.conf from DHCP, as in earlier releases.

Unfortunately, I am not seeing /etc/resolv.conf (actually a symlink to
/run/resolvconf/resolv.conf) being updated; it is only the boilerplate
from /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head with no server information
appended. (My "base" and "tail" files are empty.)

I poked around the scripts in /etc, and believe I have found the
problem.

When resolvconf is installed, the following two files are present:

/etc/dhcp/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/resolvconf
/etc/dhcp/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/resolved

Both of these scripts define the make_resolv_conf() shell function. What
I am seeing is that dhclient runs these two scripts in the
(alphabetical) order shown, and as the resolved script runs second, it
overwrites the resolvconf version of the shell function with its own. As
a result, dhclient does not invoke the appropriate update command for
resolvconf, even though the hook script was installed correctly.

Normally, I would remove the package that is providing the "resolved"
script, but this package is systemd, which cannot be removed. I am not
sure which of the two packages (resolvconf or systemd) needs to make an
accommodation for the other, but it is clear that the current approach
does not work.

[Bug 1782262] [NEW] systemd's default critical battery policy is to hybrid suspend

2018-07-17 Thread Phillip Susi
Public bug reported:

Despite the fact that hibernation is not officially supported, and does
not work out of the box ( and still does not seem to work even after I
manually added the resume= kernel parameter ), the default policy of
systemd on a critical battery level is to perform a hybrid suspend,
wasting time and power writing ram to disk that will never be resumed.

2018-07-17 Thread Bart Houkes
It's no problem at the moment. I face much worse problems wiith latest
versions of ubuntu...

e.g. PP1455 (look on internet) cannot detect internal Wifi.

PP1455 cannot use RFID sensor from Akam.nl

PP1455 has totally no Audio.

Many times there is a system errror... my business has to use 14.04, it
is more stable than later versions.

ALL users with 16.04 and 18.04 have problems and some want their money
back.

I am a small company and may go bankrupt thankt to Ubuntu...
www.kassaku.nl send you greetings.

[Bug 1750197] Re: App drawer animation causes heavy CPU spikes in Wayland & Xorg

2018-07-17 Thread Luke B.
The upstream bugs related to this issue (found up top) have been
updated, as work is being done upstream.

** Description changed:

+ Upstream Issues:
+ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/233

  Ubuntu Release: 17.10 and 18.04
- gnome-shell version: 3.26.2
- System Theme: CommuniTheme Beta
+ gnome-shell version: 3.28.2
+ System Theme: CommuniTheme

- Upon navigating through various areas of the system, GUI animations are
- very stuttery. This heavily affects the CPU usage of my device. For
- instance, opening the shell app drawer displays a very janky animation,
- and my CPU will spike to nearly 85% for each open/close. This happens
- regardless of using XOrg or Wayland; however Wayland appears to have an
- overall lower impact on resource usage. The CPU in this laptop isn't the
- greatest (being a 2014 Celeron), but this is noticeably more sluggish
- compared to previous releases like 16.04 and 16.10.
+ Opening the Applications Overview (App Grid) displays a very janky
+ animation, and my CPU will spike to nearly 90% for each open/close. This
+ happens regardless of using XOrg or Wayland; however Wayland appears to
+ have an overall higher impact on resource usage.

This same issue is still existent, but somewhat less noticeable on my
other i5-6400 (GTX 1050) machine. Also, emulating this release in a VM
with 2 CPUS and 4096MB of RAM renders it unresponsive for 3-5 seconds
  after opening/closing the app drawer.

Please do not hesitate to follow up with requests for more info, as I
  will be happy to help.

[Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default

2018-07-17 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
The build failed.

[error] cannot read character map directory `/usr/share/i18n/charmaps':
No such file or directory

Looks like those extra changes, which I proposed in the original patch -
and which proved to not be needed in cosmic - make a difference in
bionic. (Yes, Łukasz, as you suggested on IRC it was in the bionic
pocket of my PPA I tested originally.)

The above error should go away if locales is added to Build-Depends-
Indep.

[Bug 1782152] Re: GDM block SIGUSR1 used in PAM scripts

2018-07-17 Thread Dariusz Gadomski
Adding scripts for reproducer.

** Description changed:

In case of the following scenario:
  1. PAM configured to run auth and session with pam_exec scripts synchronizing
via SIGUSR1
  2. Using GDM as the login manager causes SIGUSR1 never reaches the target
scripts.

  Workaround:
  a) Use SIGUSR2 in the scripts.
  b) Comment out block_sigusr1() call in daemon/main.c.
+
+ To reproduce add the following entries:
+ /etc/pam.d/common-auth:
+ auth optionalpam_exec.so log=/tmp/auth.log expose_authtok quiet
/usr/local/bin/auth.py
+
+ /etc/pam.d/common-session:
+ session optional pam_exec.so log=/tmp/session.log
/usr/local/bin/session.py
+
+ Attaching example scripts.
+ When using SIGUSR1 - sigusr1_handler is never called, with SIGUSR2 it is
called without issues.

This bug was fixed in the package guile-2.0 - 2.0.13+1-5ubuntu1

guile-2.0 (2.0.13+1-5ubuntu1) cosmic; urgency=medium

  * Convert triggers to noawait (LP: #1780996) (Closes: #903915)

registration is a no-op, so it's completely safe to make it noawait.

[Bug 1782111] Re: package fonts-deva-extra 3.0-4 failed to install/upgrade: dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile subprocess returned error exit status 2

2018-07-17 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test. Thanks in advance!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1768840] Re: Evince 3.18.2 claims excessive memeoy when opening a multipage file created with AbbyyFineReader14 (AFR14, runs on Windows10)

2018-07-17 Thread Adalbert Hanßen
According to the people from Abbyy Fine Reader the error is caused by a
"linearisation problem" in AFR14 and it will be fixed there.

However for files which show the syndrome I found out that they comply
to the norm according to VeraPdf.

According to the people of Abbyy Fine Reader, the error does no longer
show up for Poppler Version > 0.50. However I was unable to check this
with Evince since I have no version of Evince at hand which incorporates
a version of Poppler>0.50. I only found that pdftotext version 0.66.0
did not use excessive memory nor excessive usage of CPU.

Unfortunately I can not switch back to Poppler version 0.41.0 which
belongs to Xubuntu 16.04.4.

It would be helpful if one could lift all Poppler-dependant programs to
a version > 0.50 without changing the version of the operating system.

[Bug 1617675] Re: Evolution will not connect to Gmail

2018-07-17 Thread gf
Hello Thomas,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with GMail calendar
in Evolution. You made this bug report in 2016 and there have been several
versions of Ubuntu and Evolution since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 1617675
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Evolution better.

[Bug 1774957] Re: Network icons in status menu disappearing

2018-07-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Upstream bug:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/140

** Description changed:

+
+ ---
+
Ever since the update to Ubuntu 18.04 I'm having issues with the status
menu at the top right of the screen.

Normally you'd have a wired network connection icon displayed at the top
without opening the menu. In my case it is not displayed half of the time. In
the menu list no icon nor label is displayed for the wired connection menu item.
When talking about half of the time it means that I can randomly make it
display again when removing the USB network adapter and reconnecting it e.g.
This does not work reliably though.

When connecting to a VPN, normally you'd get an additional icon at the
top. This is not the case any more, nor does the switch behind an
activated VPN turns change to an active state. The result is that you
can activate a VPN using the switch, but you can verify that it is
activated, nor can you de-active the VPN through the menu. This does
  change in settings though.

Wireless settings are no longer displayed in the menu at all. So no way
to activate it or connect to a specific network.

I tried reconfiguring (dpkg-reconfigure) gnome-shell as well as network-
  manager-gnome, to no avail.

Attached you'll find a screenshot illustrating the issue. You'll see two
icons missing to the left of the volume icon, as well as the wireless
menu missing completely and no icon and text label for the wired
  connection menu item.

[Bug 1782077] [NEW] network/wifi icon missing from top bar and user menu

2018-07-17 Thread Florian Echtler
Public bug reported:

On 18.04, after a recent update, the top bar in gnome-shell does not
show a wifi icon anymore. More importantly, the network menu entry is
missing in the user menu.

This appears to be already tracked in this upstream bug:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/140

Here's the recent updates that may have cause this (apparently the
switch from 3.28.1 to 3.28.2):
