[Bug 1782473] [NEW] "Software" opens window missing a search widget

2018-07-18 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

The window opened from Menu->All->Software shows the software stores
available. When I alunch the first, I get a window showing all
applications; but the window is missing a search widget. To look for a
specific app I have to step through every app in every category. If
there were only a dozen or so apps for Ubuntu that would be ok.

Forgetting to add a search feature is a major design error!

2018-07-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
No, the power of gnome-shell's extensibility is also its weakness.

Basically everything in gnome-shell is a global that extensions can
modify directly or indirectly. That's what makes so many extensions
possible, but it also means that they are not isolated. So any bug in an
extension can easily break the whole shell. And that's what often
happens.

[Bug 1782152] Re: GDM blocks SIGUSR1 used in PAM scripts

2018-07-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Upstream have proposed a fix:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/merge_requests/20

Please test it when you can.

** Changed in: gdm3 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => New

** Description changed:

+
+ ---
+
In case of the following scenario:
  1. PAM configured to run auth and session with pam_exec scripts synchronizing
via SIGUSR1
  2. Using GDM as the login manager causes SIGUSR1 never reaches the target
scripts.

  Workaround:
  a) Use SIGUSR2 in the scripts.
  b) Comment out block_sigusr1() call in daemon/main.c.

To reproduce add the following entries:
  /etc/pam.d/common-auth:
  auth optionalpam_exec.so log=/tmp/auth.log expose_authtok quiet
/usr/local/bin/auth.py

  /etc/pam.d/common-session:
  session optional pam_exec.so log=/tmp/session.log
/usr/local/bin/session.py

  Attaching example scripts.
When using SIGUSR1 - sigusr1_handler is never called, with SIGUSR2 it is
called without issues.

The icons on the desktop are too big and even reducing the size at 50% through
the nautilus window they do not become small enough.

[Bug 1782399] [NEW] Specified monitor refresh rate is applied to mouse cursor only and not the applications' windows on 18.04 with Nouveau or NVIDIA's driver from Ubuntu's repo

2018-07-18 Thread Danilo Cominotti Marques
Public bug reported:

I suspect this to be a bug related to mutter, but I'm not sure.

On Ubuntu 18.04 using either Nouveau or NVIDIA's driver (from Ubuntu's
"Additional Drivers" utility), when I select and apply a higher
available refresh rate for my monitor (e.g: 240hz), the change is only
applied to mouse movements, whereas if I drag applications' windows
around I can clearly see their movement is still at the default 60hz.
Linux Mint 19 with either the Cinnamon or MATE DE does *not* show this
issue.

Ok, I have started by disabling Removable Drive Menu and System Monitor
and so far, so good. (But since it's random, it might take a while to
reproduce anyway.)

So gnome-shell doesn't enforce any sort of timeout for non-responsive

[Bug 1782347] [NEW] GDM3 fails to load without nomodeset

2018-07-18 Thread zanonmark
Public bug reported:

Both with the livecd (usb drive) and the installed version, I must boot with
the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter at GRUB; otherwise GDM3 will not boot (the
screen will keep on flashing in semi-textual mode, with a white mouse arrow
stuck).
This, however, prevents me from using the 'radeon' video driver, dropping me to
a very basic 1024x768 vesa mode.

The bug did NOT occur on Ubuntu 12.04, so it is a regression.
Also, the bug does NOT occur on XUbuntu/XFCE 18.04, so it is a GDM3-Gnome
related thing.

Thanks,
MZ

[Bug 1775226] Re: Gnome Software offers installation of updates on shutdown independently from update-manager and unattended-upgrades

So from your step it looks like the "key" action is to click on
"refresh" in the gnome-software updates tab. If that triggers an offline
update in packagekit then we indeed have a bug, we are going to
investigate that one.

[Bug 1775226] Re: Gnome Software offers installation of updates on shutdown independently from update-manager and unattended-upgrades

2018-07-18 Thread Balint Reczey
I don't remember what I did in the past, but I was able to reproduce the dialog
with the following steps:
1. Upgrade fully and reboot the system.
2. Downgraded a package:
sudo apt install unattended-upgrades=1.1ubuntu1
3. Disabled u-u:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades
4. Opened Gnome Software (Ubuntu Software)
5. Clicked on Updates tab, then on the refresh/reload icon in the upper left
corner.
Gnome Software printed "Looking for updates", then misleadingly that
"Software is up to date" despite u-u is still not upgraded.
6. The prepared-update file is now present:
$ ls -alh /var/lib/PackageKit/prepared-update
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 93 srp 18 12:24 /var/lib/PackageKit/prepared-update
7. Clicking on Shutdown now offers installing updates which is executed, too.
Upon next login a report is shown about installed updates.

[Bug 353356] Re: Gnome screensaver lock always reports "incorrect password"

2018-07-18 Thread Andrey Roenko
Same issue on 18.04.

Sometimes, not always, lockscreen starts saying "wrong password".
Currently I'm fixing it via switching to a tty (ctl+alt+f1) and sending SIGTERM
to everything that mention screensaver except for gsd-screensaver-proxy (simply
via htop interface). After that workaround I'm sometimes stuck with a session
that turns off my monitors every 30 seconds of inactivity.

It's really annoying.

[Bug 1775226] Re: Gnome Software offers installation of updates on shutdown independently from update-manager and unattended-upgrades

2018-07-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Googling a bit I found an old Debian discussion on
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2015/08/msg00548.html which state
that packagekit creates the offline update file when a client requests
for one. Did you use gnome-software and if so what did you click in
there exactly?

[Bug 1780996] Re: Convert triggers to noawait

2018-07-18 Thread Julian Andres Klode
I'm not convinced that noawait is the right choice for libomxil-
bellagio-bin. The plugins are unusable without being registered. That
said, nothing depends on libomxil-bellagio-bin now, so the trigger might
never get run in the first place - switching to noawait does not make it
any more fragile:

Assuming a package that depends on a plugin and makes use of it in the
postinst, you currently do not get any guarantee that installing plugin
foo will make plugin foo usable, unless you also depend on -bin. But if
you depend on -bin anyway, the guarantee with noawait is the same, as
the trigger for bin will have been processed before your package is
configured.

[Bug 1775226] Re: Gnome Software offers installation of updates on shutdown independently from update-manager and unattended-upgrades

2018-07-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
It looks like that dialog should be displayed if the
"/var/lib/PackageKit/prepared-update" file exists, which is what
packagekit used to prepare offline updates. Those shouldn't happen on
Ubuntu though. Do you have that file on your disk? What's the timestamp
for it?

2018-07-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report. What you describe is a bug, we don't have that
behaviour/dialog enabled by default. Do you have any non standard packagekit
packages/configuration on your installation?
Does it leads to any problem or just to UI confusion? (I saw dialog a few times
during the bionic cycle but checking the box didn't seem to do anything)
