[Bug 1799851] Re: Software Boutique window suddenly shows Welcome window and looses all the apps I queued to install

2018-10-27 Thread Robert Pearson
Dear Luke,

After reinstalling Ubuntu MATE 18.04 I needed to reinstall the apps I
use from the Software Boutique.

I selected Menu->Administration->Software Boutique.

The Software Boutique opened. I then selected each category tab and
clicked the "Install" button for each of the apps I use. There are
approximately 27 apps I use.

During this process suddenly the Boutique Window displayed the welcome
window and lost all the apps I queued for installation.

I was only using the app. I am not a Linux guru (yet). I was not
debugging the app. Obviously something is wrong in the source code for
the app to show this behaviour. I am only reporting the bug so that the
developers can have all the information I possess in order to fix their
code.

I believe that comments should be focused on the app and its behaviour.

Robert Pearson

[Bug 1800284] [NEW] digit transformed into exponent if moving between typing of two *

2018-10-27 Thread Pierre-Olivier Vares
Public bug reported:

Open gnome-calculator

Write (or compute) a number, let's type 9×9×9×9×9×9×9×9×9×9×9×9, enter.
Or type directly 282429536481.

What is observed :

Now, We'll (try) to compute the product of all the digits.
So move the caret after the first digit, type *
Result (OK) : 2x|82429536481
Move right : 2x8|2429536481
Type another *, and observe, rather than adding a multiply sign, the digit is
transformed into an exponent sign :
   2x^|2429536481

What should be observed :
   2x8x|2429536481

If you type anything else (like pressing space and deleting it), the bug
doesn't occur.

The bug is probably due to a bad test for converting ** into ^ :
- first, it should detect that another key (arrow, shortcut, and even simple
modifier should be counted as other keys) has been pressed. Or it should be
based on the character preceding the caret, not the one previously pressed.
- in any case, it should never replace anything than a *

[Bug 1799851] Re: Software Boutique window suddenly shows Welcome window and looses all the apps I queued to install

2018-10-27 Thread Luke Horwell
Robert, please note Martin marked the bug report invalid for "gnome-
software" which is correct as GNOME Software is the wrong package.
"ubuntu-mate-welcome" is the one at fault.

Also note that the "Gtk-Message error" (and poor code quality) you
described for ubuntu-bug is just a GTK warning for the developer of that
application, it is not an error.

---

This bug report does not contain any valuable details of the crash to
address what happened. Software Boutique does not retain the queue
across sessions, and there is no stacktrace nor can it be reproduced for
further inspection.

Please elaborate on this:

> I was selecting apps to install in the Software Boutique, then
suddenly the Boutique Window displayed the welcome window and lost all
the apps I queued for installation.

What are the steps to reproduce the same crash you experienced?

[Bug 1800277] [NEW] "chmod u-w ~/.ICEauthority" breaks login

2018-10-27 Thread James Hunt
Public bug reported:

= Problem =

It is too easy to make a system unusable.

= Examples

The following commands will all cause subsequent graphical logins to
fail:

== User is returned to login screen ==

- chmod 400 ~/.ICEauthority
- rm ~/.ICEauthority

In this scenario, the user is returned to the login screen with no
indication of what went wrong.

== Session "dead" ==

- chmod 444 ~/.cache
- chmod 000 ~/.config
- chmod 444 ~
- chmod 000 ~

In this scenario, the system just freezes: the cursor is unresponsive
and users will be reaching for the power button.

= Observation =

These scenarios would all be caused by human error.

However, clearly it is possible for the system to detect such issues and
either alert the user to the problem or simply just fix the problem.
This does not happen in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS though.

= Idea =

Have the display manager call a utility prior to executing the users
preferred session. This utility -- which could be a simple shell script
I think ("friendly-session-fixer" maybe? :) -- would do one or both of
the following:

- Perform checks for the issues outlined above warn the user graphically
if any are found.

- Fix any issues found to allow the user to login.

However they are treated, all issues should also be logged in the
journal (could be the user journal, but the system journal may be best
to allow admins to spot such issues being detected more easily?)

= Rationale =

1) All the problems above, although user-generated, are:

- trivially fixable.
- potentially very hard / impossible for a naeve user to debug and resolve.

2) By handling such errors, users won't have a bad experience of Linux
if they inadvertently perturb a critical file.

3) Users will not need to resort to a re-install (which I can imagine
some may have to given the current behaviour).

= Ideas for further checks =

- Check to ensure key files exist and if not, copy them in from /etc/skel/, etc.
- Check to ensure users home directory is owned by them and not root, etc.
- If the home partition / disk is 100% full, the script could logrotate and
compress the contents of ~/.cache/ ?

= Notes =

You could argue that the session managers themselves should deal with
these issues. In some cases that may be a fair comment. However, by
having a single central check/fix script, the problems can be handled
centrally without the issue whereby some session managers tolerate
certain scenarios whereas others don't.

[Bug 1799787] Re: gnome-shell crashes when forcing a restart if applications are started on multiple workspaces

2018-10-27 Thread Paul White
Ok, thanks. I see you've already found a bug report regarding a
dashtodock problem so best to deal with just the crash here which is
reproducible by opening applications on separate workspaces.

Only the Dash to Dock part of the original description affected me, I'm
using Wayland so I can't restart gnome-shell.

[Bug 1799056] Re: keyboard UI will not close

2018-10-27 Thread pleabargain
I have tried to reproduce the behavior but I have not been able to.

The UI for keyboard shortcuts would not close. I had to kill gnome-
control-center (via htop) to close the UI.

A one time bug maybe?

Feel free to close this report.
