[Bug 1812359] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 in Intel Atom D425

2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

There are two points of interest in that log I can see:

Jan 29 09:45:01 test /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[656]: (II) intel(0): resizing
framebuffer to 2732x768
Jan 29 09:45:01 test /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[656]: (II) intel(0): switch to
mode 1366x768@60.4 on LVDS1 using pipe 1, position (0, 0), rotation normal,
reflection none
Jan 29 09:45:02 test /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[656]: (II) intel(0): switch to
mode 1366x768@59.8 on VGA1 using pipe 0, position (1366, 0), rotation normal,
reflection none

and

Jan 29 09:45:51 test gnome-shell[931]: Skipping layers 1..n of your
pipeline since the first layer is sliced. We don't currently support any
multi-texturing with sliced textures but assume layer 0 is the most
important to keep

Both of these suggest the problem is that gnome-shell is trying and
failing to render across two screens (2732x768) because the code that's
meant to handle that for older GPUs like this is not well tested (no
developers use that kind of hardware).

As a workaround
~~~
Please just unplug your second monitor and leave it unplugged. The system
should work fine with just a single monitor. In fact, please reinstall again
without ever plugging in that second monitor and everything should just work.
As a permanent fix
~~
I think this is probably one of the bugs that Gert van der Kraats has been
working on recently: bug 1790525 or bug 1795774. The fix for those has only
been in 19.04 for a couple of days so please try live booting 19.04
(http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/) and tell us if that seems to
fix the problem.
Same/similar issue here.
Ubuntu 18.04 + Samsung Galaxy Note 8 - doesn't: very slow, lost devices.
Completely impossible to move photos via MTP
I think that it's something with mtp-tools/libmtp
For me only one reliable way to transfer photos via MTP - Android File
Also, please allow the system at least 15 minutes to boot before giving
up. There might be something slowing it down dramatically making it look
like it's hung when it's not. If that's true then we need to see it all
[Bug 1812359] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 in Intel Atom D425
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks but you seem to have made the same mistake again. That log is
from recovery mode so is not useful:
Jan 29 09:40:28 test kernel: Command line:
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-44-generic root=UUID=1b38a9ba-
d9c9-4b85-a152-b5f2cbc9aa98 ro recovery nomodeset
Using 'nomodeset' is a workaround, and one that will prevent normal
graphics modes from working. So use it when you must, but if you do need
it then that indicates a bug somewhere (this bug).
Now that you have debugging enabled, please repeat the steps in comment
#11 and be careful to not send any logs that mention "recovery
nomodeset" at the top.
[Bug 1813385] Re: Pressing Super+1..9 should switch to the last used window of the application
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Wishlist
** Description changed:
+ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/937
+
+ ---
+
  In my daily work, I save a lot of time[1] by using Super+1...9 to switch
  to windows.
  When an application has more than one window (you see 1+ dots next to
  its icon in the task bar), and the user presses Super+N, Unity would
  switch to the last used window of the application. This was great,
  because users typically switch more often between the same two apps,
  e.g. an IDE and a browser window for web app development, or a browser
  window and another app for data input etc.
  GNOME on the other hand, does not switch to the last used among the
  windows when you press Super+N. It forces you to pick one of the
  windows, every single time. Screenshot:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
  shell/uploads/9f1cd1e982b051147390466b4a6a3621/image.png
  If you have multiple windows per app (very common with browsers in
  productivity scenarios), this negates the speed advantage of switching
  via Super + numbers in the first place. You have to navigate with the
  arrow keys (the mouse is out of the question if you care about speed),
  then press Enter. Also, pressing Num Enter doesn't do anything.
  Can there please be an option to enable simply switching to the last
  used window of that application?
[Bug 1813431] [NEW] Problem with gnome panel system menu
2019-01-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
When I clicked on the start menu in the top right corner, that little
window jumped out, and. when I wanted to lock my account, nothing
happened, but when I clicked on that panel again, it was like...
vibrating... It was moving up and down about 10px (If I remember well).
When I left it be and came  back later (I have automatic lock after 5
min) There was that menu on the left (I don't know the name :D) After I
logged in, I noticed, that when I move my mouse on it, it becomes wider
and icons go slightly further apart(When I'm on desktop). When I have
Firefox window opened, same happens, but when I aim on Firefox icon, the
icons go to normal distance, but bar is still wider.
[Bug 1812359] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 in Intel Atom D425
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for your efforts. Over the weekend I also set up Ubuntu 18.04 on
some Pineview Atom netbooks, but only found bug 1727356.
Please generate a new log as the one in comment #27 is showing it's from
recovery mode, and so is not showing the bug. You seem to have booted
recovery mode twice in a row.
[Bug 1812014] Re: keyboard not responding after suspend after some time
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks, those photos are very helpful.
One shows 'upower' using 100% CPU and another shows 'kworker/6:0-events'
using 100%. I wonder if that second one is related to Nvidia (like bug
1808108)...
Can you please run:
[Bug 1813310] Re: Unable to login! gnome-shell: Execution of main.js threw exception: Script terminated with an uncatchable exception
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please try uninstalling extension 'workspace-
g...@mathematical.coffee.gmail.com' and any other thirdparty extensions
by removing/renaming /home/henger/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/
If the problem then still persists after rebooting, please follow these
instructions:
1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.
2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.
3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.
Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.
Reuben,
Great. In that case it would be a bug in 'cont...@projecthamster.org'
of this bug is then 'Invalid' for Ubuntu.
This bug does not affect everyone, which is one possible reason.
Certainly I had never experienced it till just a week or so ago.
Just because this is the "hottest" desktop bug at the moment does not
mean most people ever see it. It just means this bug is being discussed
more than other bugs.
[Bug 1767648] Re: Top bar and shell dialogs are not displayed properly when zoom is enabled
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:
  [Impact]
  When zoom is enabled, the top bar and some shell dialogs (wireless
  network selection, shutdown dialog, etc.) are not displayed properly.
  (See the attached screenshots.)
  [Test Case]
  1. Enable Zoom in Setting > Universal Access
  2. (Optional) Set zoom factor to around 3 (or higher)
  3. Look at the top bar. You will notice that all texts and icons are now
gone. If you move your cursor to the right of the top bar, and then click on
the status menu, you will see that only a portion of the menu is shown.
  4. For the shell dialogs, go to the Settings app. In the Wifi section, choose
one of the secured network available. You will see that the password dialog is
not displayed in its entirety.
  [Regression Potential]
- Low. The affected code is only used in rendering shell popup menus. But
- no regressions are expected as the upstream fix has been tested for many
- months and fixes multiple bugs.
+ Low. The affected code is only used in rendering shell panels and popup
+ menus at the moment. So any potential regression (like the original bug)
[Bug 1753070] Re: Cannot restore default alert sound (Ubuntu bell)
2019-01-28 Thread Ame Nomade
This bug is there for years, in fact for as long as I remember seeing
this software around (so, maybe 10 years on Ubuntu?). It bothered me a
lot (like a scratch on a brand new car or high tech device), and I
always thought "well it's an obvious bug, it will be fixed soon, as
everyone else will notice it and will be bothered by it (so that they
will report it)".
Well it turns out that nobody cares, because it's been 10 years and I
could never find a solution over the internet.
Up to today, I just found one: to set the default sound back, you need
"dconf" and in "/org/gnome/desktop/sound/theme-name" you right-click and
select "set to default value" (which appears to be "ubuntu" on Ubuntu).
And voilà!
---
What the bug really consists of, is that in "gnome-control-center" when
selecting "default" for the sound event, it does not set the default
value, but it sets "freedesktop" (which probably in some cases might be
right, but generally is not, like on Ubuntu).
[Bug 1414393] Re: Can't open file with command line application
2019-01-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, those applications should ship a .desktop
file to be listed. If they don't you can still create a such entry
yourself. Nautilus upstream position on the topic is that it's not the
job of the filemanager to create those entries but you could install
another software for that job. Closing that's not a nautilus bug
[Bug 1813674] [NEW] gnome-shell freezes unexpectedly and crashes afterward killing all other applications
2019-01-28 Thread Nicolas Göddel
Public bug reported:
There were many programs open as the crash occurs. There were lots of
terminal windows, thunderbird, firefox, pidgin, gedit, thunar, nemo,
synergy, transmission, solar, nextcloud and GNOME system monitor and
maybe more open. Then I was opening a popup window and the shell froze
except the mouse cursor which was responsive as always.
After a while the system presents me a fresh gnome login screen. Very
annoying...
I saw many segfaults from "Chrome_~dThread ... error 6 in libxul.so" in
dmesg afterwards although I did not start any chrome or chromium
process.
I'm not sure, since it's always been random and never systematically
reproducible.
I'm using 16.04 now (can't upgrade to 18.04 mostly because of #1164016),
if I observe it again I'll try to remember to comment here.
[Bug 1359896] Re: nautilus crashes after sshfs disconnects
2019-01-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:
1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.
2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.
3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.
Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.
Right, because it's not like the reason why I put files on my Desktop is
because I use them often and want to be able to open quickly, or like
having to open a Nautilus window, click on Desktop, and then double-
click on the file to open it is slower than just being able to open the
file directly on the desktop. That's definitely not a stupid usability
regression that anyone who keeps files on their desktops is going to
notice right away.
>or double click on the file so it's easy to workaround...
Except that I frequently want to open files (images, text files) with
something other than the default application, and double-clicking
doesn't do that, and another thing that's missing from the extension is
the "Open with other application" right-click menu command
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/ShellExtensions/desktop-
icons/issues/32).
As one of my friends commented when I told him about all the absurd
regressions introduced by ripping this code out of Nautilus and moving
it to an incompletely implemented GNOME shell extension:
#ThisIsWhyIUseKDE
Frankly, I'm just about ready to switch myself. The penchant of GNOME's
developers for regressing functionality because they don't seem to
understand how people actually use their software is a long-standing,
incredibly frustrating problem.
Right, sorry about that, thx for looking upstream though!
[Bug 1813441] Re: Can no longer drag and drop files from desktop into applications
2019-01-28 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I think you mean to link this to
https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/ShellExtensions/desktop-icons/issues/29?
I question your designation of this as a "Low" importance issue. This is
going to be a huge deal for people when 19.04 is released if it's not
fixed by then.
