[Bug 1841354] Re: Show a "Confirm" dialog window when deleting files

But in Windows there's an easy option to change that.
You should let users decide what's best for them, instead of making your own
rules.

This might also be related to bug 1841873, but that one is in the

[Bug 1841737] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace).
This might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on
your system at the time of the report. Please upgrade your system to the
latest package versions. If you still encounter the crash, please file a
new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think the problem here is that gnome-shell detects the lid is closed
already and treats that like you just closed the lid immediately on
login.

I have heard about this kind of problem before and am not sure if it's
already been fixed in later versions.

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We find a large number of bugs are caused by extensions and you have a
few installed:

'gsconn...@andyholmes.github.io'
'openweather-extens...@jenslody.de'
'sound-output-device-choo...@kgshank.net'
'move_cl...@rmy.pobox.com'
'gnom...@panacier.gmail.com'
'arc-m...@linxgem33.com'
'sensory-percept...@harlemsquirrel.github.io'
'temperature@xtranophilist'

Please try uninstalling all of them (don't just disable them), and then
tell us if the bug still occurs.

[Bug 1841679] Re: Let GDM timeout and it changes to a blank screen where there is no way to recover

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you know how to log in remotely via SSH then please:

0. Install package 'openssh-server'.

1. Reboot.

2. Log in via ssh from another machine.

3. Write down the PID of the gnome-shell process (that's the login
screen GUI).

4. Leave the machine so it times out and the screen blanks. Make sure
you can't wake it.

5. Run from ssh:

   apport-cli --hanging -P `pidof gnome-shell`

That should create a new bug report. Tell us the bug ID.

6. If step 5 failed then please check if there is still a gnome-shell
process at all. If so then go to step 7. If not, then stop here.

7. Run from ssh:

   sudo killall -ABRT gnome-shell

8. Follow these steps:

[Bug 1831369] Re: Gnome Shell pauses and stutters when under heavy load

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please be careful to only discuss one problem per bug report. If you're
experiencing multiple problems then please open separate bugs for them.

Continuing with this bug...

I suspect the problem here is that disk IO is directly affecting
animations. They shouldn't normally be related to each other, but one
way that can happen is if gnome-shell is blocked in writing a log
message. It can become blocked if there are regular log messages being
written, and then every 5 seconds the kernel will block in order to
flush to disk.

Please run this command in a Terminal window:

  journalctl -f

Now reproduce the problem again and please tell us if the Terminal
window shows NEW log messages while the freeze/stutter is happening.

[Bug 1841354] Re: Show a "Confirm" dialog window when deleting files

2019-08-28 Thread Adolfo Jayme
Note that Nautilus won’t warn you before *trashing* (Del) a file, but
will before *deleting* (Shift+Del) a file.

Even in Windows (since Windows 8), trashing a file doesn’t trigger a
confirmation dialog, just if you are to delete it permanently… This
default behavior seems fine to me…

[Bug 1841826] [NEW] Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display

2019-08-28 Thread Alexander Bischoff
Public bug reported:

I have the above described problem, which seems to be very similar to
bug #1716160

- laptop is in docking station and 2 monitors are connected (HDMI, DVI)

- If the lid is closed and I boot the laptop I can input my credentials
in the login screen and after hitting ENTER the laptop goes to sleep

- If I then press the power button of the docking station the laptop
wakes up and goes straight to the ubuntu environment w/o any user
identification

The device is a Lenovo T420 with classic docking station. Ubuntu 18.04.3
LTS. Internal graphics Intel integrated grafics and dedicated Nvidia
Quadro NVS 4200M with propriety driver 390.116. Behavior independent of
the graphics used.

I do not know what to do now since the latest state of bug #1716160 is
"fix released" and so I guess it should be part of the ubuntu version I
use?

Thank you very much.

Just a followup; I can gather more information on this apron request but
we still see the issue when the system76 PPA is removed and the Ubuntu
version of GDM is used.

Here are the steps to recreate the issue:
The blank screen issue can be recreated very easily:

Power on system - NOT LIVE DISK.
It gets to the ubuntu login screen.
Do NOT login and stay at this screen until the screen goes blank.
try to wake screen and unable to.
only course of action here is to hard power off.

[Bug 1839544] Re: power setting "display off" maximum is 15 minutes, used to have several hour increment values

2019-08-28 Thread Bill Turner, wb4alm
This should be a very simple thing to fix. And if I knew "C" I would fix it
myself.
but I don't, my knowledge base is in many other computer programming languages
that date all the way back to the 1960's. While I still program computers,
now-a-days they are primarily a tool to be used in solving other problems...

In my opinion, the best long term fix would be to provide a "[ ] other" box
with a way to allow entering the actual idle time desired -- then a user can
set it to what ever their circumstances dictates.

unfortunately, The concept of "keyboard idle" is not necessarily the
best indication of an "unattended terminal". and the futuristic concept
of tracking eyeball movements to see if anybody is actually looking at
the screen, would probably not be acceptable to most humans.

"15 min" of no keyboard/mouse movement is too short a time period, especially
when the screen is being used to display reference material.

"never" is too long, especially when you need to keep user specific
background processes running - or I would simply logoff and log back on
later.

(One would hope that the user selectable "idle time" values are being
translated internally to some form of seconds or minutes, and that they
are not simply used to set a series of "bit switches", thus my
suggestion to provide a text entry box.)

I would also like to suggest that most folks use a computer to solve
real world problems, and that computers exist primarily as a tool to be
used, and not just as just programming exercises

Thank you.

[Bug 1841774] [NEW] Freeze gnome shell and dekstop

2019-08-28 Thread Emanuele
Public bug reported:

I was closing the dialog of the "software and updates" tools (I was
checking the repositories and ppa), but the entire desktop went into
freeze, no mouse movement, at the click no action, I pressed the keys
"ctrl + alt + f3 "and I went into a tty session, from there I recorded
the logs via:" journalctl -f> log ", and I restarted.

This is one part of the log, but it seems to repeat itself, I have
attached a file with a longer log.

Re: [Bug 1831369] Re: Gnome Shell pauses and stutters when under heavy load

2019-08-28 Thread Artyom Pozharov
This problem appears when I use any loading program: Chromium, Firefox,
Libreoffice, etc... For example, the Nautilus 3.33.91 bug leads to the
endless deletion of files from the recycle bin, which leads to increased
load. I feel sticky animations and I/O operations in GNOME Shell. I think
GNOME Shell 3.34 have problem with memory leak.

[Bug 1726464] Re: Can't easily move the cursor between monitors when the dock is set to auto-hide

2019-08-28 Thread Eike
The fix from #17 is not working for me, because I could not find any
"Dock" settings via the "Activities" "Overview".

I moved the dock to the left using the "dconf Editor" to set the key
"org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock dock-position" to "LEFT".
