2019-09-02 Thread Daniel Nilson
Manually removing 'system-moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com' folder found in
~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ remedied the problem. In other
words, uninstalling the extension manually and rebooting lowered
gnome-shell cpu usage down to less than 5% on idle. Thanks

2019-09-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
1. Please try uninstalling 'system-moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com'.
Just disabling extensions often doesn't get rid of their overhead.

2. The most likely explanation I can think of is:
   https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781835
which is already fixed in Ubuntu 19.10, so please try that when/if you can
afford a little prerelease risk:
   http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

3. Another possible explanation is:
   https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/merge_requests/189
which will soon be fixed in 19.10 after mutter reaches version 3.33.92 or
higher.

[Bug 1797882]

2019-09-02 Thread Gert van de Kraats
I am currently using Debian 10 Buster with Wayland.
This problem is not existing anymore at this release.
Wayland no longer uses an extra fence register if dual monitor is used.

The wrong reservation of fence registers at intel_blit.c still exists, but does
not harm, because the limit of 14 usable fence registers is very safe.
A limit of 15 might be possible, if reservation at intel_blit.c is unbugged.

[Bug 1827790] Re: Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen brightness flashes

2019-09-02 Thread Janne Alatalo
Hi, I also have this bug on my XPS-13-9380 with the 1080p screen. I
tried to install the patched kernel that was linked above, but
unfortunately the screen still flashes occasionally. The patch might
have helped a little bit, but I'm not sure. It feels like the flashes
are more rare, and maybe not so bad as previously, but they are still
definitely there.

The kernel I tested, was the one that Kai-Heng Feng linked here:
https://bugzilla.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110511#c25

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04, if that makes any difference. And I also use
the "Night Light" feature that makes the flashing super noticeable and
annoying.

[Bug 1842349] [NEW] Reconsider conditions for setting language and formats

2019-09-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

In connection with the upgrade to 0.6.50 (bug #1789502) the fallback
values from /etc/default/locale were set on initialization. While that
addresses some aspects of the upstream changes, a need remains to
reconsider the conditions in user_change_language_authorized_cb() and
user_change_formats_locale_authorized_cb(). Currently it does not take
into account if variables were previously set in ~/.pam_environment or
not.

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display

2019-09-02 Thread Alexander Bischoff
That might be but that doesn't explain why the system goes to the
"desktop" straight after pressing the power-button w/o identification.

I disabled "energy mode if laptop-lid is closed" in "Tweak" (for gnome),
no improvement.

If I let open the lid for 2...3 cm it workes, but then the login-screen
is always in the built-in laptop-screen.

The list of programs affected includes but is not limited to:

xfdesktop
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfdesktop4/+bug/1598360

pcmanfm https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pcmanfm/+bug/1598488

and caja https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/caja/+bug/1598359

The affected code can be found at
https://github.com/GNOME/glib/blob/master/gio/glocalfilemonitor.c and
looks like this:

  switch (event_type)
{

(other conditions are located here)

case G_FILE_MONITOR_EVENT_MOVED:
/* was never available in this API */
default:
  g_assert_not_reached ();
}

This matches with the g_assertion_message() crash that these programs
are experiencing. So, I think we've found the culprit, and the solution
would be to do something to handle case G_FILE_MONITOR_EVENT_MOVED so
that these programs do not crash. Alternatively, if this API function
should never be used, then the maintainers of these programs should be
notified of this easily reproducible bug and be shown how to fix it.
Right now, many packages that come default on major distros such as
Ubuntu flavors are completely broken.

so they will handle same way (because they are *almost* same right?).
G_FILE_MONITOR_EVENT_RENAMED branch even operates with names like
"G_FILE_MONITOR_WATCH_MOVES" and "G_FILE_MONITOR_SEND_MOVED" internally.

Apparently "was never available in this API" is not true because of the
list of affected apps.

kqueue: Fix invalid emission of G_FILE_MONITOR_EVENT_MOVED event

That event is deprecated, and the kqueue backend can’t provide enough
information to go alongside the event (i.e. the name of the new file).
Use G_FILE_MONITOR_EVENT_DELETED instead.

Quite disappointed in the kqueue documentation for this: I cannot find a
single piece of documentation or example about how NOTE_RENAME is
supposed to communicate the new name of the file.

If it turns out that this is possible, the code can be amended again in
future. At least now it doesn’t abort.

Because that would be fixing the symptom of the problem, rather than the
underlying cause. This problem hasn’t been fixed already because
nobody’s found time to investigate it yet.

> Apparently "was never available in this API" is not true because of the list

I just spent a bit of time looking into it, and it seems this is caused
by the kqueue backend sending through an invalid event. I’ve attached a
patch for that.

If you weren’t using FreeBSD (or another system which uses kqueue, like
OS X), please let me know. There’s a potential bug in the inotify
backend where a -1 return value from ih_mask_to_EventFlags() can be
passed through to g_file_monitor_source_handle_event(), but I’m not 100%
sure that’s possible due to other checks beforehand.

systemd journal excerpt including backtrace

I have a physical KVM switch that "unplugs" the monitor when switching
devices (generally desired behavior for me). After upgrading mutter
(3.24.4-1 -> 3.26.1-1) as packaged with ArchLinux, the following
assertion is hit when switching screens on a machine that has only the
KVM connected:

mutter:ERROR:backends/meta-monitor-
manager.c:2267:meta_monitor_manager_get_logical_monitor_from_number:
assertion failed: ((unsigned int) number < g_list_length
(manager->logical_monitors))

A full excerpt from the systemd journal including a coredump is
attached.

As a result, my Gnome session dies everytime I switch screens. The
assertion is not hit on a laptop (with an internal screen) that is
connected to the same KVM. Based on the assertion's text, this seems
logical as it likely only hits when the only screen is "unplugged".

Thank you for your time on working on OpenSource software!

Any way you can attach a gdb to the process and reproduce? Then when you

print gjs_dumpstack()

and paste what is printed to stdout/stderr. (note that it might end up

It turns out we need this call for more than just the session type,
we also need to it to inform the greeter about the default session
to use.

[Bug 1842298] Re: Evince printing glitches on PDF documents from JHEP

2019-09-02 Thread Jonathan
** Description changed:

Evince is unable to print PDF documents from the open-access journal
  JHEP. Example file:
  https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2FJHEP07%282016%29126.pdf
  (alternatively, go to
  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FJHEP07%282016%29126 and
  click Download).

Expected behavior: When I open the file in evince, hit Ctrl+P and go to
"Preview" or print the file, I expect to see the document properly
  rendered.

Actual behavior: Both the print preview and the printed result are an
  unreadable mess.

I have encountered this problem on every PDF file from JHEP that I
tested, but didn't encounter this problem on any PDF file from any other
source. Only printing and print preview are affected, reading and
browsing the file works without issues. The problem persists when a
different printer is selected (in particular, it also appears when I
- choose "print to file").
+ choose "print to file"). I printed the same file on Windows using
+ PDFXchange editor, where no problems appeared, suggesting that the file
+ itself is not the root of the issue here.

[Bug 1825544] Re: Switch User menu item gone after upgrade to Ubuntu 19.04

2019-09-02 Thread Dizaster
Just installed 19.04. added a second account for the kids mother to
watch netflix on. when I switched users it switched fine to the other
account. however when I switched back to the main account (mine) it was
like it just signed me out when switching users and did not keep
anything open at all. then I checked processes and the other account
(kids mothers account) is completely logged out.

[Bug 1842260] Re: lock screen does not fill screen when two monitors are in use

2019-09-02 Thread fossfreedom
You filed this bug report under "budgie-artwork" - budgie uses gnome-
screensaver, so I've changed the package for the bug-report.

Note though - your bug report also states that your current desktop is
"XFCE" - so what are you using?

I would recommend that you test this on a clean live session boot of
ubuntu budgie 18.04.3 just in-case you have some weird XFCE/Budgie
interaction issues.

2019-09-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
After comment #7 it's rather easy for me to reproduce this bug now.
Interesting the system log during the hang says:

Sep 02 16:56:32 kab systemd-logind[752]: Session 9 logged out. Waiting
for processes to exit.

So maybe one of these are the issue? They are all reproducibly lingering
after logout...

[Bug 1841915] Re: black screen, unresponsive, after logout from gnome

2019-09-02 Thread Rachel Greenham
Only affects Wayland sessions, not x11. I should have mentioned it
earlier, it's been my default for some time now (because #1827428 which
still affects latest 19.10) and I forgot.

It also seems not to be the upstream bug, unless the discussion there is
going off in the wrong directions. They now point the finger at systemd
in a bug tracked here: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/13437 .
But I can't reproduce that vt-switching issue. (And our systemd is older
than any they're looking at.) I only have a problem at logout.
