2020-06-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, that's not what the option is about. The
switch control wifi being on and off, the subtitle just hints that
disabling it spares power

[Bug 1884682] [NEW] gtk_range_expose can set height/width < -1 when trough-under-steppers is enabled

2020-06-22 Thread Ceriand
Public bug reported:

The root cause of https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-themes/issues/57 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs23/+bug/538541
(murrine_style_draw_box: assertion `height >= -1' failed) is gtk_range_expose
not clamping height and width to a sane value if trough-under-steppers is
enabled, the window is very small (like in init), and the theme has non-zero
offsets.
The attached patch should solve the problem (based on 2.24.32-1ubuntu1).

2020-06-22 Thread tea for one
If I click on Inkscape in Editor's Picks, I am only offered snap

However, if I enter the Graphics and Photography section, I can locate
the Inkscape deb package.

I would be surprised if this is deliberate behaviour.

It must be particularly baffling for new users who lack the knowledge of
alternative package formats.

[Bug 1884660] [NEW] Changing wireless power saving settings disables wifi/bluetooth

2020-06-22 Thread Rulon Oboev
Public bug reported:

What happens:

Changing "Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power" to OFF disables Wi-Fi.
So there's impossible to have Wi-Fi enabled and Wi-Fi power saving
disabled (see screencast).

Same thing with bluetooth. Checkboxes (swithes) disable and enable each
other in completely unpredictable way.

What is expected to happen:

It should be possible to have wireless enabled and power saving

(logout then login).

Please report the results of this test back here.

I am trying to correlate information on the part this extension is

Thanks.  I thought just replacing gnutls-bin would be enough.  Now that I've

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Evolution and Claws email clients stopped connecting to Yahoo, AOL,
Verizon, AT&T, Bell South, etc email servers which are run by the same
group. Users are unable to get to their email.

The underlying problem is that GnuTLS does not support zero length
session tickets.  The fix works by checking that that ticket_len > 0
  prior to calling gnutls_realloc_fast().

Nominating for SRU, fulfills: "Updates that need to be applied to
Ubuntu packages to adjust to changes in the environment, server
protocols, web services, and similar, i. e. where the current version
  just ceases to work."

  [testcase]

  GnuTLS 3.6:
  $ gnutls-cli --priority=NORMAL:-VERS-TLS1.3 pop.verizon.net:995
  [...]
  - Status: The certificate is trusted.
*** Fatal error: Internal error in memory allocation.

the error should be fixed with the update

  GnuTLS 3.5:
  $ gnutls-cli pop.verizon.net:995

  GnuTLS 3.4:
  $ gnutls-cli -p 995 pop.verizon.net

  [regression potential]

The fix works by checking that that ticket_len > 0 prior to calling
gnutls_realloc_fast().  This creates two separate execution paths:

  1) If the session ticket length > 0, which is the primary use case,
the original code block will be executed.

  2) If the session ticket len is 0, then the original code block will
  be skipped.

Testing will need to include connections to servers that return
session ticket length > 0 as well as ones that return session ticket
length of 0.  Wireshark can be used to look at the NewSessionTicket
handshake message to confirm the session ticket length.

  [Other Info]

The GnuTLS project's merge request 1260 fixes this bug.  It was reviewed and
approved by Daiki Ueno:
  https://gitlab.com/gnutls/gnutls/-/merge_requests/1260

According to the GnuTLS project: "We utilize two continuous integration
systems, the gitlab-ci and travis.  Gitlab-CI is used to test most of the Linux
systems (see .gitlab-ci.yml), and is split in two phases, build image creation
and compilation/test. The build image creation is done at the
gnutls/build-images subproject and uploads the image at the gitlab.com
container registry. The compilation/test phase is on every commit to gnutls
project."
Here are the results of the gitlab-ci pipeline showing all 19 tests passed
for merge request 1260:
  https://gitlab.com/rrivers2/gnutls/-/pipelines/149155018

Page 8, section 3.3 of RFC5077 describes the NewSessionTicket handshake
message and indicates that a zero length session ticket is a legitimate value:
  https://tools.ietf.org/pdf/rfc5077.pdf

  --

When GnuTLS connects to servers that return zero length session
tickets using older TLS versions it returns the error code
GNUTLS_E_MEMORY_ERROR and the connection is closed.  This prevents
Evolution and Claws email clients from connecting to Yahoo, AOL,
Verizon, AT&T, Bell South, etc email servers.  Evolution displays the
message "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory
  allocation"

2020-06-22 Thread Rod Rivers
@sil2100 - I'm able to confirm the bionic-proposed updates worked for
pop connections to pop.verizon.net on port 995. I started with a fresh
install of Ubuntu 18.04 and applied all updates except proposed. As
expected gnutls-cli and evolution returned the error. After installing
the proposed versions of libgnutls30 and gnutls-bin I was able to
connect to the server with both programs.

I also used gnutls-cli to connect to imap.aol.com:993 as a second check
to make sure the new code supports zero length tickets. I also tried
www.yahoo.com:443 www.google.com:443 www.microsoft.com:443 and
www.cnn.com:443 as regression tests. All tests connected to the server
and started simple client mode. No errors were displayed.

Thanks to @vanvugt over there for the explanation, this appears to be
the crux of the issue:

> Although the simple act of logging to the disk can also cause such problems.
> If you write anything to the disk more than once every 5 seconds then every 5
> seconds it will block while the kernel (ext4) flushes the journal.
> So make sure you're not doing anything that causes regular log messages (run
> journalctl -f).

This means that there is a bug in both the AppIndicator extension and
GJS.

AppIndicator should not be erroring out when it encounters this, and GJS
(which provides the native method for log and error output) should not
write to the journalctl log this frequently to avoid huge journal
flushes to disk.

Re: [Bug 1884396] Re: Ubuntu freezing intermittently

2020-06-22 Thread Jofen Kihlström
It was the mega.nz applet that was the culprit.
I uninstalled the applet and now my gnome works just fine.

Thank you very much for the support!
When my salary comes the 27th I'll donate to canonical - this is
better support than both Apple and Microsoft.

Best regards

[Bug 1058515] Re: inheriting environmental variables when creating new terminal window or tab

2020-06-22 Thread Roy Stogner
I just tried switching from xfce4-terminal to gnome-terminal, only to
discover that new tabs spawned via Ctrl+Shift+T (or File->New Tab) in
the latter fail to inherit my session's $SSH_AUTH_SOCK or
$SSH_AGENT_PID.

The second-best workaround is indeed to only spawn new tabs via "gnome-
terminal --tab", but that's a bit unwieldy and it's not quite the same
(the new tab inherits the environment of the shell running that command,
which may have changed from the session environment), so I'm afraid the
best workaround was to switch back to xfce4-terminal...

[Bug 1854403] Re: Need updated libimobiledevice and dependencies to access iOS 13 devices

2020-06-22 Thread Philip Langdale
Ah, sorry. Yes, if you rebuild the focal package with f56a65f and use
openssl, then connectivity and file transfers work correctly. There does
not appear to be any other changes required. I can't vouch for all the
functionality, of course. The device backup functionality seems popular,
but I don't use it. I've tried doing a device backup and that seems
fine, but I'm not going to attempt to restore it. :-)

The fix works by checking that that ticket_len > 0
  prior to calling gnutls_realloc_fast().

Nominating for SRU, fulfills: "Updates that need to be applied to
Ubuntu packages to adjust to changes in the environment, server
protocols, web services, and similar, i. e. where the current version
  just ceases to work."

  [testcase]

  GnuTLS 3.6:
  $ gnutls-cli --priority=NORMAL:-VERS-TLS1.3 pop.verizon.net:995
  [...]
  - Status: The certificate is trusted.
*** Fatal error: Internal error in memory allocation.

the error should be fixed with the update

  GnuTLS 3.5:
  $ gnutls-cli pop.verizon.net:995

  GnuTLS 3.4:
  $ gnutls-cli -p 995 pop.verizon.net

The build image creation is done at the
gnutls/build

Yes!
All the lag and freeze are gone.
I never thought that the applets cloud cause this issue.
I'll try them one at the time - are you interested in which applet it is
causing all this?

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-06-22 Thread Treviño
I've tested this in a laptop with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 (and so
PRIME), now in this scenario I don't get any scaling at all using

xrandr --output eDP-1 --scale 1.25x1.25 # replace eDP-1 with your
output

But an extended desktop instead.

So these are two different issues.

Who is affected, can please check this again (use this command to reset
xrandr --output eDP-1 --scale 1x1), and let us know what happens and
what graphic card is used?

[Bug 1807056] Re: Occasional Keyboard freeze

2020-06-22 Thread Mert Ertin
This is the main reason i quit Ubuntu. The bug was always there since I
begun with 18.04 and my workaround was to press the power key on my
laptop and click cancel when shutdown window appears. It was taking away
from professional feel of a computer and making it feel like a 2013
smart phone. I believe one of the reasons not a lot of people report
this issue is because they silently read forum posts that have no
resolution for about 2 years and then go install another distro like I
did. It's sad that Ubuntu had a few other bugs that were appearantly
experienced by a very few people, therefore never getting really
addressed; like this keyboard bug will be ignored on this page as it
have been the last 2 years. Yes, I'm bitter. Because Ubuntu was my first
"escape from Windows" solution and I really liked it until I couldn't
stand the unnoticed bugs anymore.

[Bug 1812883] Re: Desktop view flashes every time ~/Desktop changes

2020-06-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think bug 1872796 and bug 1832812 cover the performance issues
already. If there are any more then please open new bugs for them.

[Bug 1884428] Re: calculater not open

2020-06-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read 'How to report bugs effectively'
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thanks!

[Bug 1812883] Re: Desktop view flashes every time ~/Desktop changes

2020-06-22 Thread Roger James
This bug is still present in Focal. It seems to have lost focus in
upstream. In Focal it is much harder to remove the extension as it is
even more tightly linked in as a mandatory dependency for a number of
major system components. The only way to remove it is by deleting or
renaming its files.

It seems to me that this extension is responsible for numerous
performance issues. A number of bugs have been raised on different
symptoms, but all have a common factor of impacting performance and
involving this extension.

May I suggest that an umbrella bug is created and named something like
"Unacceptable Gnome shell perfomance" and marked as critical. The first
priority is to make this extension optional and disabled by default. The
process of enabling should warn of potential performance issues.

Also, you say there's no evidence of crashes but we should check to see
if there are any crashes occurring without a trace. To do that please
run:

  pidof gnome-shell

in the evening and again in the morning. They should both report the
same process ID.

Re: [Bug 1884396] Re: Ubuntu freezing intermittently

2020-06-22 Thread Jofen Kihlström
The journal.txt and top made me think about Gnome being the source of the
freezing.
I installed Mate and changed DE and have no freeze at all - I guess that
proves it has
something to do with GNOME.

[Bug 1882462] Re: Displays wake up pre-maturely (likely driven by notification)

2020-06-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There's a slight chance this is a side-effect of gnome-settings-daemon
trying to enforce the default colour profile. It's a bit of a mess but I
believe that does so by programming the display hardware directly,
independently of the power mode mutter/gnome-shell last set. So if
gnome-settings-daemon has touched the hardware more recently than mutter
/gnome-shell I imagine problems like this might occur.

To reduce or eliminate the risk of that you can disable (toggle off) the
default profile for your display(s) in: Settings > Color

Re: [Bug 1884396] Re: Ubuntu freezing intermittently

2020-06-22 Thread Jofen Kihlström
Hello Daniel!

I had one extension active (User Theme) for getting the dark theme truly
dark everywhere.
I checked top and it is gnome + shell that push the cpu up to over 80% -
but only in short
bursts.
I made two journal files just in case - I'll attach them.

Thank you so much for your help!
If there is anything more I can do to help out, please let me know

Kind regards
Jofen Kihlstrom
