Hi Daniel, yes I was going to resort to that if necessary. Thanks! One comment though, I found that the setting was not even saved before I switched to Fvwm. I don't think we will ever support that. Aside from anything else, even if gnome-control-center did successfully change a setting, it would not be remembered in the next Fvwm session. While the UI was unresponsive, I was able to use another machine to SSH to the PC and run the journalctl command you recommended. The attached file journal6.txt contains 2 incidents one at around 17:49 and the other around 19:58 In both cases, I used HTOP to find the gnome-shell task running at 100% cpu then kill it. That fixes the problem and lets me log in again. Please note that these logs were recorded with the AppIndicators extension turned back on. After still experiencing the problem with AppIndicators I turned it back on. Let me know if you're prefer the journal file without AppIndicators on. Appreciate your efforts in assisting to track down this issue. Perhaps of interest: if I set the primary monitor to the external monitor via xrandr and then run g-c-c, g-c-c shows a dropdown that allows me to select the laptop monitor as primary. I've a similar issue on Groovy. I got it 2 days in a row after my daily package update. Reverting the machine to a state before the upgrade and re-upgrading the same packages doesn't reproduce the issue.
