This is not an issue with 12.04. I have experienced this consistently in 16.04, 18.04 and 20.04 I have nvidia, so the common theme seems to be nvidia (however, may not even be that). I have tried in vain to find a fix for the last 4 years and have now learned to live with it (save frequently, etc). If I leave GDM3 like that for a while (around 30 secs or so) it will eventually terminate and drop to the underlying tty. Conversely, lightdm is working correctly. Just a FYI, I'm a bit confused regarding the ID. The .uploaded file has a timestamp earlier than the .crash file (about 12 hours earlier than when I actually experienced the crash most recently) and the .uploaded file doesn't change its contents after running ubuntu-bug, even as superuser. It doesn't appear to correspond to the actual upload? Or am I just tricked by some sort of deduplication mechanism that prevents subsequent uploads of identical crashes?
