[Bug 1967596] Re: Gnome on-screen keyboard unreliable

This bug is now about the unlock screen only.

** Bug watch removed: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues #5273
   https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/5273

** Description changed:

I have upgrade from 21.10 to 22.04 Beta on my Microsoft Surface Go 2
- tablet. I generally use it via the tough screen but I also have a type
+ tablet. I generally use it via the touch screen but I also have a type
  cover I can attach.

- There are a number of instances where the on-screen keyboard does not
- appear or does not prove the required input. Examples are as follows:
-
- - Firefox (snap) - trying to enter credentials into the Bitwarden
- extension. Tapping into the text fields does not bring up the keyboard.
-
- - Pycharm (snap) - creating a new project in the start-up wizard,
- tapping in the filename box does not bring up the on screen keyboard.
-
- - When you lock the tablet and then try to unlock it via the Gnome
- unlock screen, tapping in the password box does bring up the keyboard
- but any keys pressed do not appear in the password box.
+ When you lock the tablet and then try to unlock it via the Gnome unlock
+ screen, tapping in the password box does bring up the keyboard but any
+ keys pressed do not appear in the password box.

All of the above can be worked around by attaching the Type Cover and
  using the physical keyboard.

If I an collect any diagnostic data for this please send me the
- instructions ans I'll see what I can do.
+ instructions and I'll see what I can do.

2022-04-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes the login screen runs as a different user so it can't access your
private files until you make them world-readable.

What gets me about this bug is that the black rectangle has nicely
rounded corners, like an app window or a zombie splash screen from some
app.

If you run 'xwininfo' and then click on the black area, what does it
output?

try out an HDMI-only dock. The problem did NOT occur, and everything
worked perfectly.

Back at home, I switched my personal dock from DisplayPort to HDMI by
changing out the cables and, thus, using the dock's HDMI ports instead.
The problem went away.

[Bug 1085706] Re: pam_ecryptfs: seteuid error

2022-04-27 Thread Ariel Faigon
Confirming issue exists on Kubuntu 20.04.4 LTS.

Every attempt to login from the graphical login screen makes this error
appear in authlog:

/var/log/auth.log:Apr 27 13:56:16 kcheckpass[3516]:
pam_ecryptfs: seteuid error

Quick "fix" of the symptom, i.e. make the error go away is to add the
seteuid-bit permission to kcheckpass (owned by root):

sudo chmod u+s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/kcheckpass

However, this seems like a too broad privilege grant so I'm not sure it is a
good idea.
Personally, I prefer to have the spurious error in the log over this broad
privilege grant.

Note that login succeeds despite the error appearing in authlog.

[Bug 1969396] Re: Can't use Right Alt as compose key with English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout

2022-04-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Now I have tested a bit more back and forth, and here is a new attempt
to describe the nature of the issue:

Whether Right Alt works as the compose key or not depends mostly on
where in the list of input sources the keyboard layout in effect is
present.

If the layout in effect is the first one in the list, Right Alt works
fine as compose key. This is true whether Alternate Characters Key is
switched off or set to "None". (No problem with "English (Dvorak, alt.,
intl.)" either, in other words, if that layout is first in the list of
input sources.)

If the layout in effect is further down in the list, Right Alt may or
may not work as compose key. Not sure about the exact pattern here.

As regards Alternate Characters Key, I notice a marginal impact. If the
English (US) layout is not the first layout in the list, Right Alt works
as compose key with that layout if Alternate Characters Key is switched
off, but not if it's set to "None". It should be noted that English (US)
does not set Right Alt to the 3rd level key by default.

Steve, does the above description reflect your observations too?

Over to the question whether this is a g-c-c bug to some extent. I still
think that g-c-c sets sensible options, and that the unexpected behavior
is rather an XKB issue. The reason why Alternate Characters Key sets
"lv3:ralt_alt" is that it assumes that a user who picks something else
but Right Alt wants to be able to use Right Alt as any Alt key.

OTOH, given this issue wrt Right Alt as compose key, you can argue that
g-c-c should better not provide Right Alt as a compose key option...

** Summary changed:

- Can't use Right Alt as compose key with English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout
+ Right Alt not working reliably as compose key unless the layout in effect is
first in the list of sources

I created a live USB stick with persistent store on it to test the workaround,
and the system booted up fine. I didn't get screen where you choose between
'Try Ubuntu' or 'Install', so probably that's why it is working. I checked it
and the nouveau driver was selected so i'm not sure if it's directly related,
something is messing up the screen when you click on the try button.
Also i usually don't use persistent space because it makes the live boot very
slow.

apt install gdm3=42.0-1ubuntu7 I get:

Branje seznama paketov ... Narejeno
Gradnja drevesa odvisnosti ... Narejeno
Branje podatkov o stanju ... Narejeno

Imate pokvarjene pakete.

To translate, it says something about unresolved dependencies
(gir1.2-gdm-1.0 and libgdm1).

I just update today and I can run Wayland!! Thanks!
BUT... the option of night light is not working.

I'm using a Ci5 -10400F, nVidia Gtx 1650 with nvidia 510 driver.

How to reproduce: Configuration>Monitors>Night Light tab (I'm
translating from Spanish)

don't work the temp selector or/and the on/off button.

[Bug 1969243] Re: gdm 42.0-1ubuntu4 no longer shows Wayland option

2022-04-27 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Armando, you need gdm3 gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu7

That update is still being pushed out so it may not be available on your
machine yet.

Once you have that version, you'll need to restart your computer.

[Bug 1970605] [NEW] New video recording feature in new screenshot tool crashes

2022-04-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The new screenshot tool with the video recording feature keeps crashing
every time I try to record a part of my screen or the whole screen. The
red timer shows up for less than a second on the top right of my screen
and then it disappears. I've tried restarting my PC but it doesn't fix
it. I have also tried OBS Studio to see if it crashes there, but it
doesn't. Only the new screenshot tool in Ubuntu 22.04 does it.
Screenshotting works fine, only the video recording has a problem.

[Bug 1970612] [NEW] Ubunt 22.04 does not give the option to select Wayland on login screen.

2022-04-27 Thread Armando Bortoluso Moura
Public bug reported:

Bug description:
Hardware: a hybrid laptop, Nvidia dedicated GPU (Geforce 1050) and a integrated
GPU (AMD Vega).

Just did a fresh Ubuntu 22.04 install and ran the Software Updater.
After rebooting, in the login screen, there is no option to select a
Wayland session (the gear icon is missing). The settings in Gnome shows
a Xorg 11 session.

There is already a bug reporting this, but it is marked as fixed and it
is clearly not fixed.

[Bug 1969243] Re: gdm 42.0-1ubuntu4 no longer shows Wayland option

2022-04-27 Thread Armando Bortoluso Moura
Same problem here. Just made a clean Ubuntu 22.04 install and then ran
the updater. No option to change to Wayland is given to me (the gear
icon on the login screen). I have a hybrid Nvidia 1050 and a AMD Ryzen.
This problem does not happen in Fedora 35/36.

Is the fixed published yet? If it is, it is NOT working and the bug IS
NOT fixed.

[Bug 1969637] Re: IBus lookup table appears bottom left of application (x11)

2022-04-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
** Description changed:

+ im-config jammy SRU
+ ===
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ Changes in gnome-settings-daemon v. 42 resulted in IM issues in GNOME on
+ Xorg. On Ubuntu the effect is that the candidate window is misplaced,
+ and appears at the bottom of the application window instead of close to
+ the cursor. It's an annoying enough issue to justify an SRU.
+
+ Maybe a more proper fix (in gnome-settings-daemon) will happen later,
+ but in the meantime we simply let im-config set the GTK_IM_MODULE
+ environment variable to "ibus".
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ On an updated Ubuntu 22.04:
+
+ 1. Install ibus-libpinyin
+
+ 2. Run these commands:
+
+sudo locale-gen zh_CN.UTF-8
+sudo update-locale LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8
+
+ 3. Reboot and log in to an Ubuntu on Xorg session
+
+ 4. Add "Intelligent Pinyin" to the input sources
+
+ 5. Open gedit, switch to "Intelligent Pinyin", and input something.
+
+ => Find that the candidate window is misplaced.
+
+ 6. Install im-config from jammy-proposed and reboot
+
+ 7. Repeat step 5.
+
+ => Find that the candidate window is shown close to the cursor as
+expected.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ Setting GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus is a normal measure for Xorg sessions, and
+ shouldn't cause any adverse side effects. (Doing it for Wayland sessions
+ would have caused issues, though, but we don't do that.)
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ The same change will soon be synced from unstable into kinetic.
+
+ [Original description]
+
I know it is not im-config issue. I don't know what is root cause.

  how to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or apply newest update
  2. boot
  3. select a user
  4. select Ubuntu on Xorg
  5. input password
  6. login
  7. run gedit
  8. push Hankaku/Zenkaku key
  9. input any keys
  10. lookup table appears bottom left of application

  proposed fix:
  edit DESKTOP_SETUP_IBUS="GNOME" to DESKTOP_SETUP_IBUS="" on
/etc/default/im-config

[Bug 1970495] Re: Window manager freezes when plugging in USB-C dock with external monitor.

2022-04-27 Thread Brian Rossa
@Daniel

(1) It's not possible to do a soft reboot under the error mode because
the displays are frozen. Will a hard power-off get the job done?

(2) Using "Ubuntu on Xorg" changed the symptoms somewhat, but the
outcome is still the same: the secondary monitor never cycles up -- it
stays black. The only difference is that, under Xorg, the primary
monitor does NOT freeze. I can even access the Display manager and
attempt to set the secondary display up, but clicking "apply" has no
effect other than to cycle the power on the monitor.

(3) The dock did not require any special drivers on 20.04, the Ubuntu
version I just switched from.

I will attempt to collect additional logs under Wayland. Stay tuned.

[Bug 1970141] Re: [nvidia] Desktop icons desktop is black

2022-04-27 Thread John Collins
Well I tried doing all that with disabling the icons.

It does remove the icons, but the background is still overlaid with
opaque black.

It didn't do anything immediately but it did after I logged in - just
removed the icons. The directory ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions
wasn't there. Mind you it isn't there on a "virgninal" laptop which I
haven't done any such fiddling on.

How do I get the icons back though? gseettings reset org. (etc etc) runs
OK logged out and back in but no sign of them. Just empty
blackness...

HOWEVER doing that did solve the mystery of the jpg file. Yonks ago I
had tried to set that file as a background to the login screen but it
didn't work and I gave up, thinking that the instructions on Ubuntu help
weren't working but it was ultra-cosmetic and I didn't bother (I leave
my machine running and logged in 24/7 and without screen lock - which
incidentally is working OK and safe as only myself and GF can get to
it).

But doing all that setting that file to be world-readable made it pop up
as the background to the login screen. (Such a beautiful picture,
sunrise over a sea port, just struck lucky in the early morning. Totally
irrelevant but I'll post if if people want to see it.)

It's clearly some weird opacity in the desktop display because if I
click "Activities" or press the Windows button I can see my background
image appearing hazily with a black mist and reduced-sized windows over
it as well as the desktop selection list again showing the background
image. But if I select a desktop, the background picture flashes up for
a second and then goes black apart from the "sliver" at the bottom.

[Bug 1969140] Re: Window minimize animation flickers and appears in the wrong place

2022-04-27 Thread Cristiano
may I could find the cause of this problem. if you look, the second
animation is actually the animation that gnome shell runs when you
minimize windows. gnome shell minimize application to the "activities"

[Bug 1961508] Re: Dock displaying over program after resuming from blank screen

2022-04-27 Thread Sebastian
thanks for noting the duplicate bug I opened. Very annoying little bug
on a fresh 22.04 :)

[Bug 1969959] Re: [nouveau][amdgpu] Weird colors after startup (Ubuntu 22.04)

2022-04-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Keep it simple. Please start with only the AMD GPU.

If you have a laptop, just disconnect the external monitor.

If you have a desktop, just move the monitor connection to the
motherboard. You might have to also temporarily remove the Nvidia card
during that time or else the system will still prefer Nvidia even while
no monitor is connected to it.

Once you can use the machine with only AMD graphics, you can install the
Nvidia driver manually (even when no Nvidia card is installed):

  sudo apt install nvidia-driver-510

and reboot. Then it should be safe to go back to using Nvidia and multi-
monitors.

If you're installing Ubuntu from scratch then the shortcut to all this
is to choose the third-party software option during installation.

I am of course guessing that the problem is the nouveau driver and not
AMD...

[Bug 1970141] Re: [nvidia] Desktop icons desktop is black

2022-04-27 Thread John Collins
Looking at your second answer first, I tried the "gsettings list-
recursively ..." but it didn't give any output. That might be because
I'd previously fixed the file to be world-readable after I'd noticed the
messages in the journal.

I've tried turning off world-readability but the messages haven't
reappeared. Seems like whatever was trying to access the file has been
satisfied when I let it read the file.

[Bug 1970248] Re: .deb files open with Archive Manager by default

2022-04-27 Thread Sebastien Bacher
We should revisit how we ship the default going forward, at least use
the non deprecated filename. The reason we ship from desktop-file-utils
was that it was a smaller and less risky package to upload to change
default.

But for now the first fix would probably be to remove the .install line
from gnome-session again
