[Bug 1987366] [NEW] syslog filling up

2022-08-22 Thread Eric Fredericks
Public bug reported:

rlsyslogd is a runaway process hogging one of my CPUs.

The following is repeatedly logged in my syslog:

Aug 22 20:41:00 alonzo gnome-shell[369997]: The offending callback was
SourceFunc().
Aug 22 20:41:00 alonzo gnome-shell[369997]: Attempting to run a JS callback
during garbage collection. This is most likely caused by destroying a Clutter
actor or GTK widget with ::destroy signal connected, or using the destroy(),
dispose(), or remove() vfuncs. Because it would crash the application, it has
been blocked.

The CPU fan is really cranking.

I killed rsyslogd and that didn't seem to resolve it; I then restarted
lightdm.

[Bug 1986450] Re: Visual artifact 1px vertical white line right side of the wallpaper

2022-08-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I've not seen any other reports of this bug.

If it is mostly only visible on AMD graphics and less than 6% of Ubuntu
users are using AMD graphics, intersected with the small proportion of
users who are willing to report bugs instead of ignoring them, it's a
small intersection so unsurprising it took this long to be reported.

I need to switch to AMD to work on another bug soon so I will check on
this one too.

[Bug 1987162] Re: 43: New Device Security feature is confusing and unhelpful currently

2022-08-22 Thread Alex Murray
>> I don't think it's appropriate to display that in the settings app.

> I suppose that not knowing is more secure?

Yes if you consider the risk of users DoS'ing themselves by having to
potentially hack around in the CLI / BIOS settings to try and find the
right incantations to get a green check mark to appear. The status quo
is a lack of awareness - so we need to trade of the risks of showing
something which is unactionable and potentially alarming vs. keeping
things as they are. Once there is support to rectify these issues from
the GUI then I am not at all opposed to showing this information and
would welcome it. However even then, we will want to ensure this is a
robust process since we don't want to say make it easy to enable Secure
Boot and then prevent machines from booting since the user doesn't
actually run a signed kernel, or say end up having hardware devices
silently disabled on a subsequent reboot since they were previously
using unsigned modules etc. There is a lot of complexity and corner
cases here so it is prudent to be conservative in our approach IMO.

[Bug 1987209] Re: gnome-shell (Wayland) crashes with SIGSEGV when screen locker activates (jj), immediately after meta_workspace_get_work_area_for_monitor: assertion 'logical_monitor != NULL' failed

2022-08-22 Thread Daren Swasey
I am getting very similar results.

For work a desktop computer was wiped and then imaged with Ubuntu 22.04.
Like francois-lafont, I have noticed that when the system 'screen blank'
activates, all my open windows in my session are closed after logging
back in.

About my system (from About menu in Settings)

- Dell OptiPlex 3050
- 32 GB RAM
- Intel® Core™ i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz × 8
- AMD® Radeon rx 550 / 550 series / Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 630 (KBL GT2)
- GNOME Version: 42.2

Monitors being used:
- Dell U2211Ht 22"
- Acer G226HQL 22"
- LG 32MA68HY 27"

Again, like francois-lafont's testing, I have reproduced this error by
setting the 'Screen Blank' setting to 1 minute, then waiting for the
system to enter the screen blank state. The following then happens.

1. Everything seems to be fading out as normal
2. Screens no longer have data that needs to be displayed, they go into sleep
mode
3. After a brief period, screens are forced back on (where when this problem
isn't happening, screens will remain in sleep mode until input provided by user)
4. System displays the dark login screen as if I was never logged in.
5. After signing in, all my open applications have been closed.

I have managed to circumvent this issue by choosing the option
'Ubuntu on xorg' before signing in, or by uncommenting the line

#WaylandEnable=false

in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf. I then repeat the test described above after
rebooting gdm3 and my session is saved, no issues.

I have attached my own results that I found after a 'journalctl -b0'.
The text in the file are some of the lines before and after the line:

gnome-shell[]: segfault at

I would not know. Nevertheless, I consider this bug report as a heads up
in case you encounter it or something similar in the future. It is
nothing critical, and the workaround does work, even though applying it
every time I log in to Ubuntu will probably get tedious in the long run.
Does this even affect others? No idea.

[Bug 1980606] Re: gnome-control-centre crashes after enabling "Sharing"

2022-08-22 Thread Nathan Teodosio
I couldn't get the crash with >gnome-control-center
1:41.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.1<, even though gnome-remote-desktop was not
installed, and even after logout/login; After clicking "sharing", in the
header there was the toggle button, in the right pane there were the
computer name field and the media sharing button.

I verified that I get no crash >gnome-control-center
1:41.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.4<, which also pulls gnome-remote-desktop as a
dependency and adds the remote desktop button to the right pane.

[Bug 1987330] [NEW] Dock click action "previews" focuses instead

2022-08-22 Thread John Barrett
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS
Release:22.04

gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock:
  Installed: 72~ubuntu5.22.04.1
  Candidate: 72~ubuntu5.22.04.1
  Version table:
 *** 72~ubuntu5.22.04.1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-updates/main amd64
Packages
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-updates/main i386 Packages

 72~ubuntu5 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main i386 Packages

With the Ubuntu dock click-action set to previews, focusing on one
program then clicking on the icon of a different program with multiple
windows focuses the most recently used window from that program instead
of showing the previews.

Steps to reproduce:-

1) Open multiple Terminal windows (or any program I guess, but I used Terminal
and Firefox for testing)
2) Open Firefox
3) Click on the Terminal icon in the dock

Expected behaviour:

Previews for all the Terminal windows are shown

Actual behaviour:

The most recent Terminal window is focused.

Additional info:

Appears to be a regression of #1947445, which was supposedly fixed in
version 70 but I'm on version 72. I've tried setting the click-action
via gsettings and by editing /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/10_ubuntu-
dock.gschema.override (as per #1770405) but neither has any effect.

** Attachment added: "Video of the bug. Initially, Firefox is focused. Clicking

[Bug 1987162] Re: 43: New Device Security feature is confusing and unhelpful currently

2022-08-22 Thread Richard Hughes
> If regular users can't easily fix the issues listed in there

You can fix some, but they do currently require the user to open up the
system firmware settings. You need the latest (git master) version of
fwupd installed to get the [translated] long descriptions of each
hardware security problem.

>, from the GUI itself

We are working on that, although this is only going to work on Lenovo
and Dell laptops.

> I don't think it's appropriate to display that in the settings app.

I suppose that not knowing is more secure?

> Yes, we can go ahead and hide this feature now for Ubuntu 22.10

It's literally your choice, but some of these are critical security
issues.

[Bug 1977663] Re: Remote Control under Remote Desktop sharing option only works for VNC

2022-08-22 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

Toggling "Remote Control" doesn't apply the value to the RDP service

  [ Test case 1]
  0. Install the updated gnome-control-center packages.
  1. Open the Settings app
  2. In the left sidebar, choose Sharing.
  3. Turn on sharing in the top bar of the app the click Remote Desktop
  4. Turn on Remote Desktop
  5. Turn on "Enable Legacy VNC Protocol"
  6. Turn on Remote Control
  7. Open a terminal and run
  grdctl status

View-only: No and Status: enabled should show for both RDP and VNC.

  [ Test case 2]
  Complete Test Case 1. Then
From a second computer, connect to the first computer using Remmina.

The Remote Desktop page on the first computer provides the username and
password to use. Just use the first computer's IP address.

  So something like:
  RDP jeremy@192.168.1.1

Ensure that the RDP connection works and that you can remotely control
the first computer from the second computer.

  Disconnect.
Then reconnect but switch the protocol in Remmina to VNC

  So something like:
  VNC jeremy@192.168.1.1

Ensure that the VNC connection works and that you can remotely control
the first computer from the second computer.

  [ Regression Potential ]

Remote control setting does not work for VNC, changing settings manually
from gsettings isn't immediately reflected by the UI.
+
+ [ Workaround ]
+ If you are affected by this issue, you can use this workaround on the machine
that you are trying to connect to.
+
+ Open a terminal and run
+ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.remote-desktop.rdp view-only false

[Bug 1987304] [NEW] gtk3 fails to build from source in kinetic

2022-08-22 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

gtk3 has build test failures in kinetic but not in Debian Unstable.

(It built on riscv64 because we skip the build tests there).

My initial impression is that this is a reftest issue. The reftests are
frustrating because dependency changes can lead to images that vary by
as little as one pixel and fail the test. And upstream doesn't provide a
precise list of dependency versions they are using either.

[Bug 1987162] Re: 43: New Device Security feature is confusing and unhelpful currently

2022-08-22 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Another issue to consider here is that there is no secure way to display
the information in the first place. If some of those settings are
disabled, malware can simply modify the app to display a green checkbox
next to Level 3, leading to a false sense of security.

The feature was also discussed at

Yes, we can go ahead and hide this feature now for Ubuntu 22.10. I
wanted to have a few other people see the current state of the feature
before we disabled it. Perhaps it will be more usable in a future
release.

Sharing some references, the panel was added as part of

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/1570

the intend from the design seems that the items description include a
suggestion of how problems could be resolved.

there are some report about improving the UI as

disabling for now if we think the UI is more likely to confuse users

[Bug 1986584] Re: Nautilus crashes when i pluh-in iphone se

2022-08-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1985304] Re: Update GNOME Shell to 42.4

2022-08-22 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I successfully verified gnome-shell42.4-0ubuntu0.22.04.1, in particular that
extensions could be enabled/disabled, uninstalled/installed and are working as
expected.
I also performed some exploratory testing of the features that have been
touched by this update didn't find any regression.

Marking as verification-done.

Thanks for the bug report. I can see radeon kernel debug messages in the

the bug is in the radeon kernel driver.

[Bug 1987209] Re: gnome-shell (Wayland) crashes with SIGSEGV when screen locker activates (jj), immediately after meta_workspace_get_work_area_for_monitor: assertion 'logical_monitor != NULL' failed

2022-08-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It looks like there might be two different crashes here. Comment #2
looks like bug 1969422.

If there is indeed another crash happening here then please follow these
instructions to find it:
