[Bug 670197] [NEW] Jabber subscription request dialog is too difficult to understand for non-technical users

2010-11-02 Thread Alex Launi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When a subscription request for Jabber is received, the dialog reads
Subscription requested by Contact name. Without understanding of
Jabber, this is very confusing as to what it's asking. When I received
this I was unsure if this meant that Contact wanted to add me as a
contact, or if there was some other jabber technology in use. The text
should be reworded to be friendlier. Since jabber subscriptions are to
presence rather than purely the ability to communicate, maybe the dialog
should read

[Bug 206547] Re: Open (but do not raise) new conversation windows automatically

2010-03-05 Thread Alex Launi
This patch is only a partial solution to the problem but it's a start.
In its current form, the first message received for a new conversation
that is not the first (in other words, the first message of a
conversation to open a new tab instead of a new window) does not set the
urgent hint or update the window title. Any subsequent messages behave
normally. This is because the new-message signal needs to be connected
to earlier, but I need to go to bed and can't figure out how to
accomplish this right now. Hopefully someone else will have time, or I
will later. Anyway it can't hurt to post here in hopes that someone else
will look at it.

Upstream says that this feature should not be merged for lucid anyway as
it needs more consideration on how to be done right. I'm not sure I
agree with them, but they should be represented none the less.

I'm with MPT and co. on this. The option should be removed entirely. Why

As for what state to start Empathy in, it should match whatever state
the Indicator Applet Session is in when Empathy starts.

[Bug 387467] Re: obtuse error when ejecting a playing DVD

2010-03-03 Thread Alex Launi
Users will often press the eject key to check if there's a CD in the
drive. If there is no CD, nothing should be ejected. The bottom line
is that pressing eject when there is no CD in the drive is not a
serious error that should be thrown in the user's face in the form of
a dialog. For another example, if I press volume up and my volume is
maxed, it shouldn't show an error dialog: Error! VOLUME IS ALREADY
MAXED OUT

Then how do you get a cd in the drive in the first place?? Also, the
problem here isn't that there's no disk in the drive. The problem is
that there IS a disk in the drive, but it's being read from. I think
the bug here isn't the dialog, it's the contents of the dialog. We need
to answer the question, What should Totem do when I request to eject a
disk, while watching it?

A couple of possible answers..

1) Stop playback and eject disk- If totem is able to resume playback
from where the disk was started this might not be a bad option, if it
means starting from the beginning and forcing the user to seek, it
should not be considered, but maybe the functionality of restarting
playback from where Totem left off should be implemented.

2) Ask the user if they meant to eject, or if it was an accident. If
ejection was intentional, stop playback, unmount, and eject. If
unintentional, continue playback. Maybe playback should pause while the
dialog pops up so the user doesn't miss any of the action, and then if
it indeed was an accident, start playback again when the dialog is
dismissed?

3) Other?

[Bug 526163] [NEW] Make CapsLock an additional control key belongs in 'CapsLock key behavior' category

2010-02-22 Thread Alex Launi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Under 'CapsLock key behavior' there are the options; Make CapsLock and
additional backspace, Make CapsLock an additional ESC, Make capslock an
additional Hyper, Make CapsLock an additional NumLock, Map CapsLock an
additional Super

but Make CapsLock an additonal Control is sadly missing, and exists
under the Control key position category. These categories are not
mutually exclusive, so it's a little bit confusing as to where to find
this option. Not a serious bug, but a small usability issue.

[Bug 196091] Re: Orientation should be an option in gnome-print dialog

2008-03-04 Thread Alex Launi
In my opinion it's a necessary feature! It's very redundant to make the
application developers implement this over and over, and when they don't
it's a major pain when you need to print something in a different
orientation. For example the gnome keyboard layout manager, it doesn't
have a file menu to switch the orientation, but it would be nicer if you
could print out a big diagram of the keyboard in landscape orientation,
instead one is limited by the portrait.

[Bug 193561] [NEW] MTP plugin lacks proper permissions to interface with device

2008-02-19 Thread Alex Launi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 (fully updated as of Wed Feb 20 02:51:20 UTC 2008)
Rhythmbox version 0.11.4 (0.11.4-0ubuntu6)
libmtp7 (0.2.5-1ubuntu1)

The MTP plugin fails to open a connection my device, I believe due to improper
permissions somewhere. When rhythmbox is run as root, the plugin loads and
connects to the device allowing me to transfer songs and browse my library. the
mtp-tool mtp-detect is able to open a connection with my device as a normal
user and does not require root permissions. When I run rhythmbox with $
rhythmbox -D mtp the following is outputted:
LIBMTP_Get_First_Device: No Devices Attached
Rhythmbox: could not connect to socket
Rhythmbox: No such file or directory

thanks
