[Bug 581303] Re: Home directory won't be decrypted if user password isn't asked
Seeing this in Maverick too. The attached screenshot shows that you simply need 1- to have an encrypted home directory (done at install time) 2- to check the Don't ask for password on login option in the user settings Symptoms are as described above; ICE Authority errors, Nautilus not having permissions to launch, etc. Strangely enough, if you switch to a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+F1) and do a sudo service gdm restart and then click your username, it logins properly and decrypts the home directory, allowing GNOME to read your prefs etc. So it seems this happens only on the first login attempt, subsequent logins work. ** Attachment added: screenshot - how to trigger the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ecryptfs/+bug/581303/+attachment/1650205/+files/pass%20not%20asked%20on%20login.png -- Home directory won't be decrypted if user password isn't asked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/581303 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 523299] Re: Lucid session idle timeout is too short
I'm thinking enterprise setting/coffee break scenario here. 5-10 minutes is reasonable, 30 minutes is an insanely long amount of time to leave a work computer unattended and wide open to any passerby to fiddle with. The default setting should be closer to a secure setting. Users who don't need security (ie: home users) can disable automatic screen locking or prolong the timeout. [Bug 540280] Re: openssh (or gvfs) asks for a password everytime I change directory in sftp
I keep getting this to this day. Here's a screenshot of how it looks like. It really looks as if openssh client itself was interfering with gvfs or something. To reproduce: 1. Use nautilus to connect to a password-based SSH server, such as sftp://u...@server 2. When prompted if you want to remember the password, select only for this session 3. Move around. As soon as you change folders, this intrusive and modal openssh dialog will show up. ** Attachment added: Screenshot.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/43178426/Screenshot.png -- openssh (or gvfs) asks for a password everytime I change directory in sftp https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/540280 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

The title and description of this bug is, from what I can tell, wrong. AVCHD is *not* MPEG-2 TS, and certainly not HDV. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD ; it's all H.264 AVC there. Thus the current bug report should be about MPEG-2 Transport Stream camcorders, because actual *AVCHD* camcorders (at least mine, which does H.264 in a .mov container) do not cause any problems and work fine with PiTiVi. -- Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/327872 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gstreamer0.10 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 423694] Re: session active, not inhibited, screen idle message
Chris, any progress or further upstream discussions on finding what causes this? I'm still experiencing issues with my netbook randomly not being able to go idle (and thus, no screen dimming, dpms off, or auto suspend...). I couldn't pinpoint the cause, it usually works the first few times after a fresh login. AFAIK the totem, hamster and eog bugs that prevented idling have been patched. On rare occasions I see the weird little icon in the notification area, but it immediately disappears, I've never been able to mouse over it to see what it said. It seems to happen only on my netbook, which obviously has a lid and suspends/resumes quite often. AFAICT my desktop doesn't forget to idle. I wish I could be more of help and get this damn idling+power saving+inhibition crap working just like it used to in time for the next ubuntu LTS release, which will be installed on many computers I maintain... but I just don't know how to troubleshoot this clusterbug anymore, I'm lost. [Bug 479630] Re: cannot use a SOCKS proxy in karmic with most applications
Yes, it is consistently reproducible. To do this: 1. have a machine that will be used as the SSH host in which you will tunnel into 2. SSH into it, by running this in a terminal: ssh -v -N -D 8000 the-remote-host, keep the terminal open 3. go in gnome's proxy settings (gnome-network-properties) 4. set the mode to manual proxy configuration 5. set the socks host to localhost, port 8000 (leave the other proxy types blank) 6. make the terminal (the one with the ssh tunnel running in it) show always on top so you can see its activity at all times 7. use epiphany, evolution, empathy, to visit websites or connect to accounts. Notice that nothing happens in the terminal. 8. use chromium-browser, firefox, pidgin to do the same: notice that activity shows up in the terminal where SSH is running (new channels are opened, etc.), indicating that those apps indeed use the socks proxy So actually it's not that the gnome proxy is broken, but that evolution, empathy and epiphany (which used to work) don't support it. ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- cannot use a SOCKS proxy in karmic with most applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/479630 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Upstream replied that they fixed the warnings in totem, and that they couldn't reproduce the problem, but I can see how the original warning might happen. Most likely, gnome-screensaver crashed, or was killed, and the gnome-session inhibition didn't notice. gnome-screensaver is supposed to proxy to gnome-session, and it should be transparent to users. Bastien finished by: File a bug against gnome-screensaver if you still see the problem. Now the question is whether we will still be affected now that a fix for the warnings has been committed in totem, or if gnome-screensaver is still problematic, or something. [Bug 448438] [NEW] idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem Ok, this is really weird. I know that gnome-power-manager's inhibition features have been migrated over to be handled by gnome-session, and the g-p-m features for that were deprecated in gnome 2.28. What I'm seeing here is that - totem does seem to inhibit the screensaver (contrary to what other bug reports say), however: - it sometimes forgets to release the inhibition. If you run it with --debug, you can see errors such as this one: j...@kusanagi:~$ totem --debug Vidéos/8-bit\ trip.mp4 (totem:4604): GLib-WARNING **: GError set over the top of a previous GError or uninitialized memory. This indicates a bug in someone's code. You must ensure an error is NULL before it's set. The overwriting error message was: Method AllowActivation with signature on interface org.gnome.ScreenSaver doesn't exist ** (totem:4604): WARNING **: Problem inhibiting the screensaver: Method UnInhibit with signature u on interface org.gnome.ScreenSaver doesn't exist Now, I'm not sure exactly why, the inhibition sometimes seems to work, sometimes not. When it doesn't work, - the screen will not blank anymore, the session will not go idle (and will not lock) - if you attempt to log out of gnome, you will get a warning about totem (sometimes, multiple instances of totem!) being busy and inhibiting (while totem has only a single instance, and it is long gone). I hope I'm clear enough and that this info is helpful. One thing that is certainly crucial to get right for Ubuntu 9.10 final is session inhibition, especially when dealing with the default video player. [Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons, system menu
Ok, this is going nowhere. We have a bunch of me too's but that's never going to change their mind or give them a realistic sample of the gnome users' opinions. Quoting André Klapper's (condescending) comment upstream: 'Feel free to ask them, e.g. run a poll somewhere where probably 0.01% of the GNOME users will comment.' Now, instead of wasting time here, should we not indeed be looking at how to run such a poll and ensuring that we have 1) a large enough statistical sample 2) representative enough of the GNOME population ? Where and how could this be done in a (semi?) official manner? On the other hand, I have a vague pessimistic feeling that even if we do that and have a statistically sound poll to present to them, if the empirical results go against their hypothesis, they will dismiss them by saying that the study was flawed, that the results are not representative, and that we are a bunch of clueless non-designers, etc. Anyway. At this point, I don't really *care* who wins anymore. I just thought I'd mention this possibility, and that it would be an interesting social experiment to actually run such a poll on a large and representative sample (now, go figure out how to do that. [Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly
I hope you guys are not serious about inflicting this on your users. If you want to simplify things, the gnome guys already did it for you years ago, with spatial nautilus (you know, the default nautilus mode that Ubuntu specifically patched out to not be the default?), which was the hallmark of simplicity/minimalism/usability* (and is the default in Fedora, from what I've seen). Crippling the browser mode of nautilus (which is for users that can't stand spatial nautilus' minimalism) will pretty much result in angering those users, and usability-conscious people just recommending others to avoid ubuntu desktops because Canonical keeps doing parallel work and doing away with the principles set forth by gnome (ignoring the desktop's toolbar label settings? seriously?!). Unless gnome decides that this is the new canon that should be implemented on all apps, of course. Just my warning/2 cents. I don't really care that much on a personal level, in the grand scheme of things, the people will decide if this is a good or bad thing, and I can still use spatial nautilus. * http://www.osnews.com/story/7548 -- Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386150 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
