[Bug 1967204] [NEW] "help" app (yelp) just displays a blank window with "Ubuntu Desktop Guide" title on rpi

2022-03-30 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I'm using the jammy beta (20220329) image running on an rpi4 8GB
clicking on the "help" app in the dock launches a window with the title "Ubuntu
Desktop Guide". The icons for forward/back, bookmarks, search, etc. are all
visible at the top of the window, but everything else in the window is just a
blank white area. On amd64, however, it seems to work fine.

I also noticed that if I move the mouse around through the area, the
pointer sometimes changes, and if I hover there for a second, a tooltip
comes up with things like "Start applications" or "Visual overview of
Gnome". I can click on these and it seems to take me forward to
something, because the back icon is no longer greyed out, but I still
can't see any content in the window.

[Bug 1967174] [NEW] Installing with zfs results in bpool, rpool drives locked on the dock

2022-03-30 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I installed the ubuntu 20220329 jammy beta with zfs root selected. After
installation, there are drives on the dock for the zfs bpool and rpool
(and in my case also a "1.6GB Encrypted" device since I also selected
disk encryption at install time). These don't do anything useful when
you click on them, and the only option when right-clicking is to mount
them, which also doesn't result in anything observable from the UI
(indeed, they should already be in use). Nor are they removable or 'un-
pinnable' from the dock. You're just stuck with them taking up space.

[Bug 1967150] [NEW] gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV

2022-03-30 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

This was running a live session of the jammy beta candidate image
20220329.1 in qemu. I let it sit for a bit after booting, came back to
the session and came out of the screen blank and saw it reporting this
crash had occurred. The session has been up 41 minutes but the files in
/var/crash are timestamped from just a few minutes ago so I think it may
have happened coming out of the screen blank.

[Bug 1797636] [NEW] unattended do-release-upgrade to cosmic asks about /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

2018-10-12 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to do some automated testing that involved upgrading a system
from bionic to cosmic, so I need it to not ask for user input.

Before running do-release-upgrade, the system got a fresh dist-upgrade
and reboot.

To avoid interactive responses, I'm using:
$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d -f DistUpgradeViewNonInteractive

Part way through the upgrade, I do get prompted for something though:
Setting up gdm3 (3.30.1-1ubuntu1) ...

Configuration file '/etc/gdm3/custom.conf'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** custom.conf (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

I also found this in /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log:
2018-10-12 16:36:44,910 WARNING got a conffile-prompt from dpkg for file:
'/etc/gdm3/custom.conf'
2018-10-12 16:36:49,915 ERROR error 'a bytes-like object is required, not
'str'' when trying to write to the conffile

Shouldn't the '-f DistUpgradeViewNonInteractive' have prevented this
from getting asked?

[Bug 1177632] Re: gnome-screensaver causes jump in compiz events

2013-06-24 Thread Paul Larson
The point of the testing is to use eventstat to find things causing lots of
wakeups, which could have an impact on power consumption and battery life. So
working around the bug would kind of defeat the purpose of testing.
In this case, it's running kvm so it isn't a real video card.

[Bug 1177632] [NEW] gnome-screensaver causes jump in compiz events

2013-05-07 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I have some automated tests that run eventstat to track the average
events/second for all running processes. I've been having trouble
getting the data to stabilize and showed it to Colin King recently, who
seems to have found the culprit. If you look at
https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/eventstat-raring-desktop-amd64
-install-idle-vm/95/artifact/eventstat.csv you will see that on line 8,
the events/second for compiz jumps dramatically. Move over a few
columns and you'll see that this sudden rise corresponds to gnome-
screensaver activating.

This is on a freshly installed raring vm, so it should be the default
screensaver.

[Bug 563034] [NEW] recording .ogg produces no sound

2010-04-14 Thread Paul Larson

recording. When I record with gnome sound recorder, I can see the
microphone volume bar move while I talk, but if I have the format set to

[Bug 551860] [NEW] Crash on login with accessibility enabled

2010-03-30 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Apport could not report this bug because it claimed it was due to an
assertion error and could not handle that.

After enabling accessibility support under preferences-assistive
technologies, I logged out and logged back in. Immediately, I was
dumped back to the graphical login prompt. Enabling accessibility seems
to add the following lines to
~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/interface/%gconf.xml
a1.bak2/.gconf/desktop/gnome/interface/%gconf.xml:

?xml version=1.0?

[Bug 528524] Re: Sound not working in all apps on dove

2010-03-23 Thread Paul Larson
Another observation: If I delete .pulse from my home directory, i can
successfully run speaker test with both sampling rates and get sound out
of it. After rebooting though, it goes back to the way it was (48000
works, 44100 does not)

[Bug 528524] Re: Sound not working in all apps on dove

2010-03-22 Thread Paul Larson
I changed default-sample-rate to 48000, logged out/in, and retested.
Everything still seemed the same though. 48kHz samples would play,
anything else would not.

I also tried this:
speaker-test -t sine -r 48000 - plays
speaker-test -t sine -r 44100 - doesn't play

If I run the same two commands with sudo, they BOTH play just fine.

Luke, I've tried with rhythmbox, as well as other players and the result

48000 Hz rate, however files with other sampling rates such as 44100 Hz
don't seem to play - I just get silence.

[Bug 530437] [NEW] Inserting an SD card offers no applications to open the card with

2010-03-01 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I inserted a sd card with videos in .mp4 from a digital camera, and got
a popup asking me which application to open it with. There was nothing
in the list of applications except a grayed out No applications found.
It seems like this list should have at least included nautilus, or
opened it with nautilus by default if no applications were found that
could handle it.

[Bug 528524] Re: Sound not working in all apps on dove

2010-02-26 Thread Paul Larson
I've been looking into this more, and I don't think it's related to
totem. Using any sound player (totem, rhythmbox, even paplay), I can
play certain audio files, but not others, and it doesn't seem to be
restricted to just certain formats that will play either. The only
consistent thing I can notice is that files that play have a sampling
rate of 48000 Hz.

Example:
/usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/bark.ogg (48000 Hz) - plays
/usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/{drip,glass,sonar}.ogg (44100 Hz) -
silence
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/*.wav (48000 Hz) - plays
/usr/share/sounds/speech-dispatcher/test.wav (16000 Hz) - silence
/usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase/InTheCircle.oga (44100
Hz) - silence
/usr/share/example-content/Aesop's_Fables,_Volume_1_(Fable_1)_-_The_Fox_and_The_Grapes.spx
 (??? 16000Hz?) - silence

Any ideas?

[Bug 512959] Re: nautilus assert failure: *** stack smashing detected ***: nautilus terminated

2010-02-01 Thread Paul Larson
I spent quite a bit of time on Friday trying to bisect mainline gvfs to
see if I could determine where this broke. At the end of the exercise I
ended up with current 1.5.2 upstream + the few patches in the package
and I was still unable to reproduce the bug. As a sanity check, I
reinstalled the current (known broken) libgvfscommon 1.5.2-0ubuntu1
package and still could not reproduce the problem.

I'm now working from a live image, where I can reproduce the problem
again. I tried reverse applying the patch that Alexander posted on this
bug, and I can still reproduce the problem. Still investigating.

2009-10-26 Thread Paul Larson
I think this can be safely closed now that we no longer have a dialog
box that comes up for shutdown, thanks to the new indicator applet
interface for shutdown functions. Please reopen and explain further if
you feel there is still an unadressed issue here.

[Bug 447886] Re: On startup Gnome Keyring asks for password in the background

2009-10-23 Thread Paul Larson
I'm able to reproduce this also, the important pieces to make it happen are:
1. a saved wifi connection
2. you have to setup your gnome-keyring with a password, rather than leaving it
blank
3. reboot the system

Workarounds are pretty simple and could probably be release noted if
this can't be fixed for final image. Either no password can be provided
for the keyring, and you will never be prompted for it. Or, if you do
provide a password, you'll need to actually click the lock icon that
comes up when the system boots to bring the password prompt to the
foreground. However, it is correct that this is a fairly significant
usability issue and many are likely to run into the problem.

[Bug 458501] [NEW] screensaver hangs on unlock, eats cpu

[Bug 395871] Re: Appearance preferences are being ignored

2009-10-07 Thread Paul Larson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in gnome-settings-daemon.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 437590] Re: Nothing happens when I select Fil es Folders » Volumes » xx GB Filesystem

2009-10-05 Thread Paul Larson
Nautilus is fine, but netbook-launcher needs some way to ask for
authentication in this circumstance. Until then, the best workaround is
to use nautilus. Once the auth has been provided and the filesystem is
mounted, it can be browsed with netbook-launcher just fine.

[Bug 403309] [NEW] gdm fails automatic login and gets stuck in a loop

2009-07-22 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Installed A3 Karmic UNR today on my Eee900 and after what seemed to be a
successful install I rebooted. Automatic login is default on UNR, which
I took. After the reboot, gdm came up and tried to auto-login, but said
authentication failed, then seemed to restart itself, over and over.
I switched to a text console and saw that there were 5 copies of x.org
running, along with other related process (metacity, gnome-power-
manager, etc). I could switch to each of these sessions via alt-f7, f9,
f10, f11, f12, but at that point they were just showing me a mouse
pointer and the background image.

Upon reboot, automatic login still failed, but it did not start 5 copies
of X either, and it actually let me login manually. If I can get it to
reproduce, I'll use apport to gather the logs and attach them here.

** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 364516] Re: gvfs-fuse-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-07-21 Thread Paul Larson
I suspect this is armel specific since I would expect to see a lot of
reports of this on other arches if it were not. Subscribing to ubuntu-
armel, but it still needs reproducing and upstream.

[Bug 310353] Re: Default font size too large if using native DPI

2009-07-21 Thread Paul Larson
While this bug does seem to affect some UNR users, it does not seem that
it is specific to UNR, so I'm removing the ubuntu-unr tag for the time
being. If anyone feels like it is specifically a UNR related bug,
please feel free to explain further and re-add the tag.

[Bug 379380] Re: f-spot preferences window is too tall for a netbook screen

2009-07-17 Thread Paul Larson
I can confirm that this is still broken in karmic as well. Target
resolution is 1024x576. Currently, the default size when it comes up is
444x642 and the minimum size as reported by xwininfo is 444x599

[Bug 388765] Re: can only open 1 gnome-terminal if launched from favorites

2009-07-02 Thread Paul Larson
I can confirm this, however I believe it to have more to do with netbook
launcher than gnome-terminal. If I try to launch two gnome-terminals
out of the accessories tab, it works fine, but not if it has been
launched from the Favorites screen.
