[Bug 47463] Re: Unattractive logout-button

2006-05-30 Thread Tom
This is indeed better than the old one, but perhaps someone could come
up with something that isn't a power on/off button? If I was a new user
I wouldn't click that to log off, because it looks like a shutdown
button.

[Bug 68617] Re: [Edgy] PowerManager has no more effect on brightness

2006-12-14 Thread Tom
I confirm the same issue on a Sony VGN-TX3XP with Edgy (fresh install),

BTW, proper workaround is to change the script and not to globally
replace /bin/sh with /bin/bash (as mentioned in above comment).

Please can you enlighten me as to how I could change the hal script(s)
rather than globally replacing /bin/sh with /bin/bash?

Affects: gconf-editor (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I accidently tried to paste a file that was 164k big to the gconf-editor
list-selection box and the editor crashed! I was wondering...doing it
twice forced the discovering...

Every other gnome-app I tried to does the same and crashed also: like the

My PC is a notebook, Fujitsu Siemens Amillo M3438 with an nvidia 6600

[Bug 14692] Re: hal detects written DVD as empty

2007-07-04 Thread Tom
This problem really doesn't seem fixed, I have a drive similar to one
posted above (Toshiba TS-L802A) and it is still detecting disks as
empty, but I can manually mount them. I don't understand how this is a
fix?

[Bug 14692] Re: hal detects written DVD as empty

2007-07-05 Thread Tom
Used the hal backport (which appears to be the most recent) and it is
still reporting all disks as empty, or not detecting them at all. I was
able to successfully install Feisty Fawn with the DVD drive, but it
still fails to detect the discs that are inserted. I tested this with
the kernel from installation (2.6.20-12) and also with 2.6.20-15 and -16
and they all failed. Tested with two versions of HAL (fresh install and
from feisty-backports)

My father finally gave me the log files. He created a new user called

FYI, the sentence Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type means No such

[Bug 200337] Re: CD/DVD burning problem in hardy SOLVED --- BURN AT 2X

2008-05-12 Thread Tom
all_generic_ide worked for me and I think I know why. It is DMA/66 80
pin tape issue. Without all_generic_ide option, on my PC, kernel uses
pata_via driver. My recorder can work in UDMA/66 mode and pata_via
driver sets this mode for it. But my dvdrecorder is connected to
mainbord by old 40 pin tape and it leads to transmission errors between
mainboard and recorder. all_generic_ide kernel option turns on
ata_generic driver and this driver set UDMA/33 mode for recoder which is
best possible one because of tape limitation. I suspect that it is
possible to discover tape kind (40 or 80 pin) on driver level and
ata_generic driver makes it better then pata_via driver.

This is part of dmesg log without all_generic_ide kernel option:

[Bug 221527] Re: Location in Clock Preferences

2008-04-25 Thread Tom
Sweden isn't that small, I'm sure. GNOME Clock is based on cities (or
whatever, if you specify your own longitude/latitude), but the installer
only asks about the nearest capital city (I assume it lists large cities
in nations where there's more than one timezone).

It would do me no good to know what the weather is like in London, for
instance, even though that's what timezone I selected - Europe/London.
So the current behaviour is correct, I believe.

[Bug 122043] Re: backslash+pipe key \| misbehaving on english layouts if english not primary

2008-06-15 Thread Tom
I just made a fresh 8.04 install, and discovered this with a default
language of Japanese and a USA/Dvorak layout (only one keyboard layout).

Adding a USA/Default layout and moving it up and down and clicking on
the default buttons doesn't help. And the picture of the layout doesn't
show a backslash/pipe key either.

Ugh.

[Bug 367291] [NEW] weather doesn't show forecast anymore

2009-04-26 Thread Tom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Weather Report 2.26.0 no longer has a tab to read the future forecast.
Prior to Ubuntu 9.04 I could select my city (Saginaw, Michigan, USA) and
then was able to select MBS or another sub-location. These sub-locations
are no longer there. I also had three tabs; Current Conditions,
Forecast, Radar Map. The Forecast tab is no longer showing up. And last
of all, nothing shows when selecting Radar Map, just a empty window.
When I press the Update button it redisplays an empty window. This used
to be a very useful applet but now shows only the current conditions.

Re: [Bug 367291] Re: weather doesn't show forecast anymore

2009-04-26 Thread Tom
First, the location that I want, MBS, is no longer there. Second, I have
used this application in Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 and the forecast and radar
map always worked before. It only stopped working on Ubuntu 9.04 which
is now using Gnome 2.26. Under Ubuntu 8.10 I was using Weather Report
2.24.1 which ran perfectly and I could select North America - United
States - Michigan - Saginaw - MBS and get the Forecast and Radar Map.
Now with Weather Report 2.26.0 my location is no longer there to select
and picking just North America - United States - Michigan - Saginaw
does NOT give me the Forecast nor Radar Map.

Re: [Bug 367291] Re: weather doesn't show forecast anymore

2009-04-26 Thread Tom
Thanks for checking to this but, YES, MBS International Airport shows up
as a selectable location under Weather Report 2.24.1 and I can get the
forecast AND radar map.

Also, Weather Report 2.26.0 DOES show the forecast and radar map for San
Francisco.

As I said initially, there used to be two additional locations under
Saginaw, MBS was one and another airport that I can't remember was the
other. Now neither one is showing up to select. I believe that is where
the problem is. If MBS was placed back in the database then I bet I
would have the forecast and radar map again.

ps: I tried Detroit, Michigan and it works also.

Sebastien Bacher wrote:
could you try on hardy or intrepid if that's still working on the same

Re: [Bug 367291] Re: weather doesn't show forecast anymore

2009-04-27 Thread Tom
I understand that you can't have every single town in the world in the
database. I ran

svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/libgweather/trunk libgweather

to see what is there.

From what I see it is NOT a database issue. My town, and more
importantly MBS International Airport, is still listed in the database.
The Weather Report program has been changed so that I can no longer
select it. I can only select the higher level town, Saginaw.

The difference I see between 2.24.1 and 2.26.0 is that Weather Report no
longer allows one to select a sub-location like it use to. Take San
Diego for instance:

 city
!-- A city in California in the United States --
   _nameSan Diego/_name
   coordinates32.715329 -117.157255/coordinates
   location
 nameSan Diego International-Lindbergh Field/name

 codeKSDM/code
 zoneCAZ050/zone
 radarlax/radar
 coordinates32.575278 -116.993056/coordinates
   /location
 /city

There are SIX airport sub-locations. Weather Report use to be able to
let me select which one to use. Now it doesn't give me a choice anymore.
I don't know which one it uses now.

Likewise for my location, Saginaw:

 city
!-- A city in Michigan in the United States --
   _nameSaginaw/_name
   coordinates43.419470 -83.950807/coordinates
   location

 codeKMBS/code
 zoneMIZ053/zone
 radarmkg/radar
 coordinates43.532778 -84.079444/coordinates
   /location
 /city

There are TWO airport sub-locations. I use to be able to select MBS,
which I still can in version 2.24.1 but now in 2.26.0 I can't select it.
I know that in 2.24.1 selecting MBS International Airport would give me
the forecast and radar map.

So, the data that I want is STILL in the database, the program just
won't let me select it anymore.

Is there anyway that I can revert back to running the 2.24.1 version
under Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)?

Thank you for looking into this. Until it became broke I never realized
how much I used this applet, and especially the Forecast and Radar Map
feature.

[Bug 298018] [NEW] Movie players flicker.

2008-11-14 Thread Tom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Seems there are 2 separate problems that werent in Ubuntu 8.04
1. Movie players cycle through all the windows open on desktop. They cant stay
on top nor allow other windows (such as the file-browser) to stay on top.

2. Movie screen flickers all the time.

As a workaround to the first problem i play movies in an empty desktop
(usually the 2nd desktop) but its inelegant when i want to play the next
episode or a new movie. Due to the workaround i found that the second
problem might well be an independent issue.

When i watch a movie i expect it to play smoothly without flickering and
then i expect to be able to pull up a file browser window on top of the
player to search out the next movie and also to be able to use the menu
options within the movie player without having to pause the movie first.
It'd be great to be able to use my mouse-wheel to turn the volume up and
down but that's another story.

I have tried out
Totem 2.24.3 xine
HD and normal
mkv and avi formats
old files and new ones
Files on Cds or over network aswell as local files.

So its not been an exhaustive trial but enough to convince me that its new to
my install of Ubuntu 8.10 as 8.04 was fine. Also new to 8.10 was the ease of
installing ATI proprietary driver without even having to go to the ATI or AMD
websites.

I'm in Linux almost all the time these days and with a fairly standard
setup i have few if any problems, certainly less than i had with
Microsoft and usually fairly easy to fix or work-around myself or
through the forums. I only use my machine for office apps, linux games
(currently loving Wesnoth, reminds me of World of Warcraft but better
story lines) movies and web-browsing. Linux is great. Ubuntu seems the
best flavour for me.

[Bug 298033] [NEW] flicker

2008-11-14 Thread Tom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I tried reporting a bug but my report vanished so i'm trying again

Movie player screen filckers. It seems to be cycling through all the
open windows on my desktop. Also when i try opening a file browser (or
any other window) the player wont let it stay on top.

My work-around, of putting the player window onto the empty desktop 2,
showed me another problem. The movie keeps filckering anyway.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 with Totem 2.24.3 with default settings. I tried
xine player but with the same result and the problem seems to happen
where-ever the movie file is stored (locally or over the network or even
on Cd drive) and i've tried mkv aswell as avi formats but always
gettting this curious flickering.

When i switched off my ati drivers i couldn't open totem at all. It
just crashed out and vanished.

Sorry if this just repeats my previous report.

Totem and Linux are excellent. Ubuntu is my favourite flavour and i'm
lucky enough to never seem to have any problems usually, certainly not
as many as with Microsoft and always easier to find answers for.

2008-11-14 Thread Tom
I've been having similar problems and trouble in reporting the bug as i
am new to using forums and a bit clueless really.

Anyway i found this on something that looks similar to me. Does this
solve your trouble too? It fixed mine. WaaaH :) Good luck and
thanks all volunteers for some good work here :)

[Bug 298044] [NEW] volume mouse wheel

2008-11-14 Thread Tom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Wishlist item, not a bug

I miss controlling the volume with my mouse wheel. It is possible but
very awkward and inelegant. I have to open the volume pop-up and make
sure the mouse arrow is in the right place. Opening the volume pop-up
automatically mutes the volume, which is often exactly right for what i
want but again seems clumsy. Zoom Player was great because it allowed
me to configure the mouse wheel to do any of the main functions and i
could even click the mouse wheel to cycle through until it gave me the
function i wanted.

There aren't any players that allow the mouse wheel to alter the volume
and the up/down arrows dont seem to change the volume either. Ideally
i'd like the left and right arrows to skip along the timeline with up
and down being for volume and space to pause.

Totem is far and away the best as far as i can tell and i think these
slight changes would help enormously.

Thanks all volunteers again
Good luck and have fun :)

[Bug 298044] Re: volume mouse wheel

2008-11-19 Thread Tom
The mouse wheel is such a perfect way to increase or decrease the
volume.

It's crazy that linux media-players don't seem to have this feature.

I've found a way that's slightly easier than described above but it's
still way to awkward and demands precision, usually at times i really
don't want to miss the action.

[Bug 41871] Re: volume slider should not use PCM but software mixer or master volume

2008-11-19 Thread Tom
Ok, im a noob and don't understand...

Do most applications that use the speakers have their own setting as a
percentage of the overall-system-wide-Main-Volume?

This would seem, to me, to be perfect - especially if each application
remembered its own setting but didn't change the main one.

I tend to prefer my music at one of 2 main volumes. Firstly as
background and second (much much louder) when i'm either annoyed or
getting ready to go out to a gig. So i could have 2 players rename
one of them 'Pre-gig' :)

Is PCM the 'Main Volume'?

Ahhh, just been trying to re-read some of the above.

Thanks Raoul Verveer for listing which apps use which volume control. A
useful issue to know. Also thanks to Kko for distinguishing between PCM
and 'Main Volume' aswell as the advice about applets.

Apparently it was found that 'UFO sightings' are more likely at 7pm on a
Wednesday evening so watch the skies tonight ;) Personally i think the
only evidence that there is intelligent life out there is that it hasn't
tried to contact us yet ;) lol, good luck and happy hunting :)

Re: [Bug 298044] Re: volume mouse wheel

2008-11-19 Thread Tom
H, interesting.

Do you have to have the mouse pointer over the loudspeaker icon?  In
Zoom Player i used to be able to have the mouse almost anywhere and even
without the taskbar or controls panels showing the wheel would still
work.

Re: your questions 1 2, errr it just happens (or rather the volume
change doesn't happen) all the time on my machine.  I'll investigate
different setups now that i know it does wok elsewhere, i thought it was
just a feature of linux at the moment.

I've just noticed the space bar does pause :)

Thanks for getting back to me on this issue too.  Good luck and have fun :)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

* Is this reproducible?

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem and resolving

The mouse wheel usually skips the movie backward and forward along the
timeline EXCEPT when the mouse arrow is hovering over the timeline
indicator.  Lol, sounds like i might have really stuffed something.

I haven't touched the source code or recompiled anything, i'm fairly
sure its a standard install.

[Bug 299973] Re: sound out put volume very low through front panel heaadphone

2008-11-20 Thread Tom
Volume seems to be affected by 3 controls only 1 of them is accessible
through Totem. There is also a main volume control on the taskbar by
the date/time on the desktop (in Windows it'd be called the 'System
Tray' i think). Finally there is PCM volume control but i don't know
how to access it. It's in one of the threads if you search on 'Volume'
it should be buried in there somewhere.

Good luck and happy hunting :)

Ubuntu 8.10 let me know that my screen would work better if i installed a

I had to click 'Ok' to continue so presumably any legal issue would be my fault

[Bug 240157] Re: [ATI][8.04] No ATI choices in TV out preferences

2008-11-20 Thread Tom
8.10 seems better for ATI support but doesnt seem as stable as 8.04 just
yet although that's probably me doing stupid stuff with it.

[Bug 206916] Re: Totem should give a dialog saying libdvdcss2 is required, instead of saying it can't read the disk.

2008-11-20 Thread Tom
If there are legal issues a disclaimer and a warning not to click on the
'Ok' button would be great :)

My Ubuntu 8.10 package manager had the libdvdread3 and dependancies all
done nicely but i didn't know there was this issue until flicking
through the forums on a cold rainy day here in England

[Bug 258661] Re: Remember Internet addresses

Would it be easier to workaround it using bookmarks in your web-browser?
I don't like space on the machine being used up remembering stuff i
didn't ask it too but then i often use other peoples machines or works
or coffee shops machines.

[Bug 137041] Re: volume is set to zero when changed in fullscreen mode

2008-11-20 Thread Tom
I like this way of quickly muting the sound when the phone goes or
something. Also you don't need to see the slider to adjust the volume,
and that's great for me too.

All i do is use the mouse wheel when the mouse arrow is over the
speaker/volume icon. Ideally i'd like the mouse wheel to change the
volume where-ever the arrow is on the screen.

Would the problem be fixed by

then restart totem.

Not sure, not even sure what the problem is. Good luck with it though :)

[Bug 298044] Re: volume mouse wheel

2008-11-20 Thread Tom
I have seen a few other people with long comments where most of the
length was just a repeat of the thread. I think it might be easy for
LaunchPad to switch off the previous history when posting emailed
responses into the thread of a bug report.

I'll clarify what i mean when i find the right words. At the moment i'm
just being confusing, sorry.

Thanks for swift answers again :)

[Bug 300785] Re: movie player flickers

2008-11-24 Thread Tom
Have you opened a 'terminal' window its like a 'command' window in
Windows (try Applications menu, Accessories, Terminal - then try

gstreamer-properties(remember pressing the tab key does predictive text
style)
click on video ouput (or something similar in the pop-up box)
under plugin select X Window System (no Xv)

then restart totem.

Also try the System menu, Administration and find the Hardware Drivers for a
great little program to tweeak and optimise performance for your graphics card.
I did that and suddenly found all the writing on my screen is a lot less
blurry :)

Good luck and have fun :)

Compact view is great. When the scroll feature is fixed it'll be even

[Bug 303248] Re: totem movie player flickers windows media 9

2008-11-28 Thread Tom
Hmmm, Trab suggested i try looking in gstreamer properties for solving a
slightly different flickering problem. Maybe it'd help you too

In a command/terminal window type

gstreamer-properties (tab-complete is handy as a predictive text thing here)
in the pop-up box choose the video default output (or something)
now try ... (no Xv) instead of auto-detect

If it doesn't help then switch it back to autodetect or whatever you had
it on.

Good luck and happy hunting :)
