I confirm the same issue on a Sony VGN-TX3XP with Edgy (fresh install), BTW, proper workaround is to change the script and not to globally replace /bin/sh with /bin/bash (as mentioned in above comment). [Bug 200337] Re: CD/DVD burning problem in hardy SOLVED --- BURN AT 2X
all_generic_ide worked for me and I think I know why. It is DMA/66 80 pin tape issue. Without all_generic_ide option, on my PC, kernel uses pata_via driver. My recorder can work in UDMA/66 mode and pata_via driver sets this mode for it. But my dvdrecorder is connected to mainbord by old 40 pin tape and it leads to transmission errors between mainboard and recorder. all_generic_ide kernel option turns on ata_generic driver and this driver set UDMA/33 mode for recoder which is best possible one because of tape limitation. I suspect that it is possible to discover tape kind (40 or 80 pin) on driver level and ata_generic driver makes it better then pata_via driver. This is part of dmesg log without all_generic_ide kernel option: [ 34.026040] scsi0 : pata_via [ 34.027306] scsi1 : pata_via [ 34.029150] ata1: PATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 bmdma 0xfc00 irq 14 [ 34.029154] ata2: PATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xfc08 irq 15 [ 34.200604] ata1.00: ATA-7: Maxtor 6B160P0, BAH41B70, max UDMA/133 [ 34.200610] ata1.00: 320173056 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 [ 34.210922] ata1.01: HPA unlocked: 15625 - 156301488, native 156301488 [ 34.210932] ata1.01: ATA-5: WDC WD800BB-75CAA0, 16.06V16, max UDMA/100 [ 34.210936] ata1.01: 156301488 sectors, multi 16: LBA [ 34.228375] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133 [ 34.243861] ata1.01: configured for UDMA/100 [ 34.562591] ata2.00: ATAPI: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7173A, 1-01, max UDMA/66 [ 34.734281] ata2.00: configured for UDMA/66 -- and this is the same part of dmes log with all_generic_ide option [ 26.430082] scsi0 : ata_generic [ 26.430171] scsi1 : ata_generic [ 26.432019] ata1: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 bmdma 0xfc00 irq 14 [ 26.432023] ata2: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xfc08 irq 15 [ 26.605110] ata1.00: ATA-7: Maxtor 6B160P0, BAH41B70, max UDMA/133 [ 26.605115] ata1.00: 320173056 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 [ 26.615511] ata1.01: HPA unlocked: 15625 - 156301488, native 156301488 [ 26.615516] ata1.01: ATA-5: WDC WD800BB-75CAA0, 16.06V16, max UDMA/100 [ 26.615520] ata1.01: 156301488 sectors, multi 16: LBA [ 26.615534] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133 [ 26.615536] ata1.01: configured for UDMA/100 [ 26.935225] ata2.00: ATAPI: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7173A, 1-01, max UDMA/66 [ 26.935238] ata2.00: configured for UDMA/33 -- The best workaround for this issue would to be to force somehow pata_via driver to set UDMA/33 mode for recorder or just to buy new 80 pin tape :) -- CD/DVD burning problem in hardy SOLVED --- BURN AT 2X https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200337 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to brasero in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 221527] Re: Location in Clock Preferences
Sweden isn't that small, I'm sure. GNOME Clock is based on cities (or whatever, if you specify your own longitude/latitude), but the installer only asks about the nearest capital city (I assume it lists large cities in nations where there's more than one timezone). Re: [Bug 367291] Re: weather doesn't show forecast anymore
First, the location that I want, MBS, is no longer there. Second, I have used this application in Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 and the forecast and radar map always worked before. It only stopped working on Ubuntu 9.04 which is now using Gnome 2.26. Under Ubuntu 8.10 I was using Weather Report 2.24.1 which ran perfectly and I could select North America - United States - Michigan - Saginaw - MBS and get the Forecast and Radar Map. Now with Weather Report 2.26.0 my location is no longer there to select and picking just North America - United States - Michigan - Saginaw does NOT give me the Forecast nor Radar Map. Re: [Bug 367291] Re: weather doesn't show forecast anymore
Thanks for checking to this but, YES, MBS International Airport shows up as a selectable location under Weather Report 2.24.1 and I can get the forecast AND radar map. Also, Weather Report 2.26.0 DOES show the forecast and radar map for San Francisco. As I said initially, there used to be two additional locations under Saginaw, MBS was one and another airport that I can't remember was the other. Now neither one is showing up to select. I believe that is where the problem is. If MBS was placed back in the database then I bet I would have the forecast and radar map again. ps: I tried Detroit, Michigan and it works also. Sebastien Bacher wrote: could you try on hardy or intrepid if that's still working on the same location? trying with san francisco for example displays forecast correctly -- http://www.thetwaros.com Registered Linux User #466934 http://counter.li.org/ -- weather doesn't show forecast anymore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367291 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
Re: [Bug 367291] Re: weather doesn't show forecast anymore
I understand that you can't have every single town in the world in the database. I ran svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/libgweather/trunk libgweather to see what is there. From what I see it is NOT a database issue. My town, and more importantly MBS International Airport, is still listed in the database. The Weather Report program has been changed so that I can no longer select it. I can only select the higher level town, Saginaw. The difference I see between 2.24.1 and 2.26.0 is that Weather Report no longer allows one to select a sub-location like it use to. Take San Diego for instance: city !-- A city in California in the United States -- _nameSan Diego/_name coordinates32.715329 -117.157255/coordinates location nameSan Diego International-Lindbergh Field/name codeKSAN/code zoneCAZ043/zone radarlax/radar coordinates32.733611 -117.183056/coordinates /location location nameSan Diego, North Island, Naval Air Station/name codeKNZY/code radarlax/radar coordinates32.690833 -117.208889/coordinates /location location nameMontgomery Field/name codeKMYF/code zoneCAZ043/zone radarlax/radar coordinates32.81 -117.136389/coordinates /location location nameMiramar MCAS / Mitscher Field Airport/name codeKNKX/code zoneCAZ043/zone radarlax/radar coordinates32.868333 -117.142500/coordinates /location location nameSan Diego / El Cajon, Gillespie Field Airport/name codeKSEE/code zoneCAZ050/zone radarlax/radar coordinates32.826111 -116.97/coordinates /location location nameBrown Field Municipal Airport/name codeKSDM/code zoneCAZ050/zone radarlax/radar coordinates32.575278 -116.993056/coordinates /location /city There are SIX airport sub-locations. Weather Report use to be able to let me select which one to use. Now it doesn't give me a choice anymore. I don't know which one it uses now. Likewise for my location, Saginaw: city !-- A city in Michigan in the United States -- _nameSaginaw/_name coordinates43.419470 -83.950807/coordinates location nameSaginaw County H.W. Browne Airport/name codeKHYX/code coordinates43.43 -83.862500/coordinates /location location nameMBS International Airport/name codeKMBS/code zoneMIZ053/zone radarmkg/radar coordinates43.532778 -84.079444/coordinates /location /city There are TWO airport sub-locations. I use to be able to select MBS, which I still can in version 2.24.1 but now in 2.26.0 I can't select it. I know that in 2.24.1 selecting MBS International Airport would give me the forecast and radar map. So, the data that I want is STILL in the database, the program just won't let me select it anymore. Is there anyway that I can revert back to running the 2.24.1 version under Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)? Thank you for looking into this. Until it became broke I never realized how much I used this applet, and especially the Forecast and Radar Map feature. Sebastien Bacher wrote: how many citizen do you have in your city? [Bug 298018] [NEW] Movie players flicker.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem Seems there are 2 separate problems that werent in Ubuntu 8.04 1. Movie players cycle through all the windows open on desktop. They cant stay on top nor allow other windows (such as the file-browser) to stay on top. 2. Movie screen flickers all the time. As a workaround to the first problem i play movies in an empty desktop (usually the 2nd desktop) but its inelegant when i want to play the next episode or a new movie. Due to the workaround i found that the second problem might well be an independent issue. When i watch a movie i expect it to play smoothly without flickering and then i expect to be able to pull up a file browser window on top of the player to search out the next movie and also to be able to use the menu options within the movie player without having to pause the movie first. It'd be great to be able to use my mouse-wheel to turn the volume up and down but that's another story. I have tried out Totem 2.24.3 xine HD and normal mkv and avi formats old files and new ones Files on Cds or over network aswell as local files. So its not been an exhaustive trial but enough to convince me that its new to my install of Ubuntu 8.10 as 8.04 was fine. Also new to 8.10 was the ease of installing ATI proprietary driver without even having to go to the ATI or AMD websites. I'm in Linux almost all the time these days and with a fairly standard setup i have few if any problems, certainly less than i had with Microsoft and usually fairly easy to fix or work-around myself or through the forums. I only use my machine for office apps, linux games (currently loving Wesnoth, reminds me of World of Warcraft but better story lines) movies and web-browsing. Linux is great. Ubuntu seems the best flavour for me. [Bug 298033] [NEW] flicker
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem I tried reporting a bug but my report vanished so i'm trying again Movie player screen filckers. It seems to be cycling through all the open windows on my desktop. Also when i try opening a file browser (or any other window) the player wont let it stay on top. My work-around, of putting the player window onto the empty desktop 2, showed me another problem. The movie keeps filckering anyway. I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 with Totem 2.24.3 with default settings. I tried xine player but with the same result and the problem seems to happen where-ever the movie file is stored (locally or over the network or even on Cd drive) and i've tried mkv aswell as avi formats but always gettting this curious flickering. When i switched off my ati drivers i couldn't open totem at all. It just crashed out and vanished. Sorry if this just repeats my previous report. Totem and Linux are excellent. [Bug 298044] [NEW] volume mouse wheel
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem Wishlist item, not a bug I miss controlling the volume with my mouse wheel. It is possible but very awkward and inelegant. I have to open the volume pop-up and make sure the mouse arrow is in the right place. Opening the volume pop-up automatically mutes the volume, which is often exactly right for what i want but again seems clumsy. Zoom Player was great because it allowed me to configure the mouse wheel to do any of the main functions and i could even click the mouse wheel to cycle through until it gave me the function i wanted. There aren't any players that allow the mouse wheel to alter the volume and the up/down arrows dont seem to change the volume either. Ideally i'd like the left and right arrows to skip along the timeline with up and down being for volume and space to pause. Ok, im a noob and don't understand... Do most applications that use the speakers have their own setting as a percentage of the overall-system-wide-Main-Volume? H, interesting. Do you have to have the mouse pointer over the loudspeaker icon? In Zoom Player i used to be able to have the mouse almost anywhere and even without the taskbar or controls panels showing the wheel would still work. Re: your questions 1 2, errr it just happens (or rather the volume change doesn't happen) all the time on my machine. It's a lot clearer now in 8.10 i think. Is it cheeky for me to change this to 'Fixed'? Sorry if it is. [Bug 303248] Re: totem movie player flickers windows media 9
Hmmm, Trab suggested i try looking in gstreamer properties for solving a slightly different flickering problem. Maybe it'd help you too In a command/terminal window type gstreamer-properties (tab-complete is handy as a predictive text thing here) in the pop-up box choose the video default output (or something) now try ... (no Xv) instead of auto-detect If it doesn't help then switch it back to autodetect or whatever you had it on.
