[Bug 2060122] [NEW] minimise animations fly everywhere

2024-04-03 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

Problem:

When maximising/minimising/restoring a window by clicking on the item in
the launcher, sometimes (often) the animation - which makes the window
shrink and 'fly' to or from the dock, will fly in the wrong direction.

Steps to reproduce:

* Have multiple monitors (I think, I don't recall seeing this in a single
monitor usage)
* Launch a number of applications
* Click icons in the dock to trigger animation as applications grow and shrink
from the launcher up to the workspace.

What should happen:

* Window appears near the dock, and grows to the final location on screen
and
* Window shrinks back down to the dock

What happens:

* Sometimes windows fly up to the top left of the display, *and* to the
dock at the bottom. Animation frames flicker all over the place, but
mostly both towards the top left and towards the bottom.

It *looks* like alternate frames of animation are flying up and down.

Here is a video of it happening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2vgEurkHk8

I am currently running Ubuntu 23.10, but I am sure I have seen this on
multiple releases.

I am using multiple displays. Arranged like this:

( 1 )( 2 )
   ( 3 )

1 - external display
2 - external display
3 - Laptop (primary)

The launcher is on the bottom of the primary monitor.

[Bug 2043517] Re: gnome-shell on non-active VT busy-loops through libwayland-server.so (sometimes)

2024-03-06 Thread Alan Jenkins
The bug re-occurred, after manually building libwayland with debugging
symbols.

So I could do more debugging, and I think this Ubuntu bug needs to be
reassigned to Xwayland.

I have filed more details in the upstream Xwayland tracker.

I see this on both 23.04 and 23.10, around 10% of the time emacs
launches from a shell, and with emacs -Q too.

[Bug 2043517] [NEW] gnome-shell on non-active VT busy-loops through libwayland-server.so (sometimes)

2023-11-14 Thread Alan Jenkins
Public bug reported:

I run several gnome sessions at once - different users on different
Virtual Terminals.

Sometimes, gnome-shell for a non-active VT starts using 100% CPU. Or,
actually 99% CPU because it's doing IPC as well. And the corresponding
XWayland uses 40% CPU.

FWIW, sending SIGSTOP to either gnome-shell or XWayland stops the other
one from busy-looping as well.

If I switch back to the affected VT, it appears to function fine, but it
is still using 100% + 40% CPU.

[Bug 2037076] [NEW] System Details incorrectly shows multiple GPUs

2023-09-22 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

My system has multiple GPUs:

00:02.0 Display controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 630 (rev 04)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
Polaris 22 XT [Radeon RX Vega M GH] (rev c0)
40:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP102 [GeForce GTX 1080
Ti] (rev a1)

It's an Intel Hades Canyon NUC with an external GPU in an enclosure. But
it's equally valid to have multiple different GPUs in one desktop
computer.

What happens

(see screenshot)
In GNOME Control Center, the System Details overlay lists them as:

--
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
Graphics 1
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
Graphics 2
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
--

Expected outcome

I would expect each GPU to be displayed correctly.

--
Graphics 1
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
Graphics 2
Intel HD Graphics 630
Graphics 3
AMD ATI Radeon RX Vega M GH

[Bug 2019886] [NEW] Printer ink levels are incorrect

2023-05-16 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

I would like to see the printer ink levels of my printer.
If I visit the gnome settings printer panel, I see lots of cyan, and a small
amount of magenta, and a small amount of yellow. An unknown about of black is
shown, perhaps in between magenta and yellow, or perhaps the bar after the
yellow. I don't know.

What's more concerning is the bars don't even line up with what the
printer thinks the fill level is.

Attached two screenshots. One of gnome settings, and one of the web UI
for the printer. The ink levels don't correlate at all.

[Bug 2019885] [NEW] Printer ink level bars don't line up

2023-05-16 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

See screenshot.

I'd like to know the ink level in my laser printer.
I can see the ink level in the gnome control center. However the colours look
like they're not centred vertically.

The ink levels are inside a losenge but don't fit perfectly vertically.
There's a gap below the coloured bar.

[Bug 1987976]

2022-10-29 Thread Alan Jenkins

...

> Thanks @sourcejedi! I've so far been unable to reproduce this on four
different systems with Fedora 36 or Manjaro,

Hi Robert. I got a new reproducer for Firefox, which doesn't use
Xwayland. I ran this on my Fedora 36 system, the system that required a
quick hand to reproduce with my .desktop file method.

WARNING for people with photosensitive epilepsy. This will cause full-
screen flickering.

1. Make sure user X is logged out, or at least not running Firefox.
2. Switch to a text console (ctrl + alt + f6) and log in.
3. `startx /usr/bin/fvwm`
4. Left click on the desktop to open the app menu. Open an xterm.
5. Open a second xterm.
6. In xterm 1, run `while true; do picom; sleep 0.1; killall picom; done`. The
screen will now start flickering.
7. In xterm 2, run `firefox`

Result: Firefox doesn't draw anything inside its window, or is
completely black.

This is also affecting Virsh (KVM/QEMU) based virtual machines. Just
tested with The latest Focal update (gnome-settings-daemon

[Bug 1879169] Re: Thumbs never updated after renaming a bunch of image files

2022-05-06 Thread Alan Baghumian
Just tested with Focal's Nautilus 1:3.36.3-0ubuntu1.20.04.1 and this
does not happen.

Followed the same scenario and renamed 2 out of 4 sample files:

1) Using Nautilus itself.
2) Closed Nautilus and renamed the files in terminal.

In both cases Nautilus automatically regenerated the thumbnails.

[Bug 1947476] [NEW] Clicking the "Trash" entry in the dock shows both Files and Trash icon as open until the dock refreshes

2021-10-16 Thread Alan Diggs
Public bug reported:

If you click the "Trash" icon in the dock, the Trash entry in Files
opens, but a Files icon also spawns in the dock, and it appears as if
both the Trash and Files icons associate with the same Trash window in
Files. This seems to correct itself after 15-30 seconds or whenever the
dock sees changes.

[Bug 1876632] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted shell textures when switching users or resuming from suspend

2021-08-10 Thread Alan AZZERA
Same problem occurs for me with nvidia-driver-470. The graphical effect
/ issue is a bit different, yet. See attached pic... My Ubuntu 20.04 is
as up-to-date as possible.

The last suggested solution is working for me (restarting gnome-shell),
but this is still annoying... I've just read this :
https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/k5ea3g/text_and_icon_glitching_out_after_resuming_from/
so it seems we won't have any solution before quite a long time... Fed
up with nvidia !

[Bug 1917939] [NEW] windows maximise underneath dock

2021-03-05 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

Under wayland on 21.04 windows keep maximising underneath the dock. So I
can see icons "through" the dock, when I shouldn't. In the attached
screenshot you can see Telegram showing through the dock.

If I switch to the application in question, unmaximise and re-maximise,
it goes back to maximising inside the usable area of my desktop.

But when I suspend and resume, then login, I'm left with windows under
the dock again. Never seen this under xorg. I only discovered I was in
wayland when I tried to ALT+F2, R to restart.

[Bug 1907239] [NEW] Oh no! Something has gone wrong

2020-12-08 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

I got the "Oh no!" screen.

The likely trigger was when I was playing a game and took a screenshot -
where the environment is likely hard to reproduce because the game I'm
playing that triggered the scenario isn't out yet. It can be built tho.

1) git clone https://github.com/mcphail/boa
2) git checkout core18
3) snapcraft --use-lxd
(wait a while, it's a monster snap)
4) snap install boa*.snap --dangerous
5) snap run boa
(wait for game to load to title screen)
6) press ALT+PrintScreen to get a screenshot

GNOME crashed at this point, giving me the "Oh no!" screen.

It does indeed! Thanks.
Looks like upstream marked the linked bug from there as a dupe of

marked as fixed in https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1493

[Bug 1900984] [NEW] Multi-monitor window-snapping snaps to wrong display

2020-10-22 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

Summary:

Snapping a window to one side of the screen will often snap to the side
of the wrong monitor.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Have two monitors arranged side by side
2. Open a new application window such as nautilus or a terminal
3a. Grab the right half of the title bar of the window and drag it to the left
side of the right monitor. Don't let go
or
3b. Grab the left half of the title bar of the window and drag it to the right
side of the left monitor. Don't let go
  - The orange window snapping guide will appear in the correct place
4. Let go of the mouse
  - The window will snap to the wrong monitor

It appears due to the amount of the window hanging over the separation
gap between the displays, it will favour snapping to the wrong monitor.

Here's a video showing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdJ6x9nnvOQ

[Bug 1870356] Re: Can't connect to paired bluetooth devices via g-c-c

2020-07-11 Thread Alan Harris
I've actually found if you keep toggling the switch it will eventually
work. Sometimes it only takes a couple or other times I've clicked it
30 times.

Before I discovered this I was removing and re-adding my devices to get
them to reconnect.

[Bug 1857392] Re: Window manager warning: Overwriting existing binding of keysym 37 with keysym 37 (keycode 10).

2020-07-01 Thread Alan Bruce
Running 20.04. Seems to me this bug appears only after I run
Transmission Bit Torrent Client. My log files have shown that my kernel
has been changed and after that I may lose wifi and lan connectivity. I
have performed a fresh install of 20.04 numerous times to eliminate the
problem and have run a fresh install for days without any problems until
Transmission is run. Logs show that the my kernel was modified from root
however I do not even know how to access root much less make changes to
the kernel. I am wondering if there is some agency or entity that makes
these changes as root to prevent torrenting, Below is copy of my

[Bug 1874655] [NEW] After suspend / resume, WiFi does not reconnect automatically to an hidden access point

2020-04-24 Thread Alan AZZERA
Public bug reported:

After letting my laptop go to sleep, the WiFi does not reconnect anymore
to an hidden access point. I must go to the WiFi settings window, then
go to the menu where hidden networks are... hidden, and force Network
Manager to connect to the hidden AP. Note that I don't have any problem
on boot. Just when resuming for suspend mode.

This is a rather recent issue, which I never encountered before these
past months. I cannot qualify exactly the time where the bug occurred.

[Bug 1874217] Re: Dual monitor setup with secondary monitor in portrait-right mode cause windows to extend on half the secondary screen

2020-04-22 Thread Alan AZZERA
Additionally, I just realized that if I move the mouse to the right side
of my secondary screen (which is at the riht side of my primary screen),
the "whole screen moves", like if I had a virtual screen which
resolution exceed the native 2560x1440 of my main screen. Difficult to
explain, so please watch the attached video.

Note that the video does not show exactly what I'm experiencing. The
right edge of the Firefox window is at a little bit more at right of the
"middle" of the secondary screen (say +500 pixels on the 900 pixels).
And then I move right the mouse to the right edge of the secondary
screen, the left side of my main screen disappear (dock included).

[Bug 1874217] [NEW] Dual monitor setup with secondary monitor in portrait-right mode cause windows to extend on half the secondary screen

2020-04-22 Thread Alan AZZERA
Public bug reported:

I will provide below a screen capture. I think this bug is related to
this one : https://bugs.launchpad.net/dash-to-dock/+bug/1869571

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 AMD64 fully up to date and freshly rebooted.

I use dual screen : the main screen is on the left side (32"), the
secondary screen (19") is at right and in portrait mode (rotated right).
The window are improperly growed : they extend from full main screen to
half the "witdh" of the secondary screen. Additionnally, the « pop-up »
menus (eg. from settings) do not appear at the right place (see screen
capture in comment). The problem disappears if I revert the orientation
of secondary screen from « portrait turned right » to « landscape ». I
do have gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock in version 67ubuntu20.04.5,
but still got the problem.

2020-04-22 Thread Alan AZZERA
Hi, I decided to add information here rather than creating a new bug
report. I'm in dual screen too, main screen at left (32"), secondary
screen (19") at right and in portrait mode (rotated right). The window
are improperly growed : they extend from full main screen to half the
"witdh" of the secondary screen. Additionnally, the « pop-up » menus
(eg. from settings) do not appear at the right place (see screen capture

[Bug 1872276] Re: Gnome shell huge app's icon size in the app folder

2020-04-12 Thread Alan Pope  濾
This seems somewhat dependent on the screen resolution.

At 1920x1080 (the most popular screen resolution) our default web browser is
"Firefox Web br..."
At 1366x768 (the next most popular screen resolution) it's "Firefox W..."

It looks like the GNOME stock application names have been optimised for
this behaviour, being called short names like "Calendar", "Calculator",
"Terminal", "Settings", "Fonts" which fit beneath their icons.

Perhaps our stock .desktop files should be examined, and developers
encouraged to use shorter names. In 2020, does anyone on Linux really
not know that Firefox is a Web browser for example?

[Bug 1869716] [NEW] Removing libpango1.0-0 broke Minecraft Launcher

2020-03-30 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

I just updated my machine, and when I did libpango1.0-0 was removed.
This removed minecraft-launcher - the (very) popular launcher for
Minecraft Java edition.

I have reported this upstream, in case they can update their package
https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCL-13512

I am filing this bug so we can track it internally. I personally think
this shouldn't have been done this late in the cycle, but there may well
have been good reasons for it.

As a result of the change though, it's now not possible to install
Minecraft on Ubuntu 20.04.

$ sudo apt install ./Minecraft\(1\).deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'minecraft-launcher' instead of './Minecraft(1).deb'
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 minecraft-launcher : Depends: libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0) but it is not

[Bug 1859955] [NEW] Display freaks out when external monitors are attached

2020-01-16 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

Running Focal on my ThinkPad T450, but not unique to this release as it
happened on 19.10 (and probably older releases too).

Steps to reproduce.

While running GNOME Shell, attach the laptop to additional external monitors.
(I'm using a docking station, but equally you can attach them via the video
ports on the laptop itself)

Expected outcome

Desktop on 1 monitor goes away.
Desktop comes back on N monitors.

Actual outcome

Laptop display goes black
Laptop display comes back, moved 50% horizontally
One external monitor comes on
Laptop display goes back to normal
Second external monitor comes on
All three displays go off again
Laptop display comes on again alone
Laptop display goes off again
laptop display comes on again
External monitors come back on again
System is usable.

The entire process takes twenty seconds.

[Bug 1859319] [NEW] widget factory slighty too wide for common 1366x768 display

2020-01-12 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

I'm using a ThinkPad X220 to test the Ubuntu default theme. It has a
wildly common 1366x768 display panel. At the time of writing, around 25%
of installs have such a resolution -
https://ubuntu.com/desktop/statistics

The default non-hiding 48px launcher, and width of the widget factory,
means that it's impossible to get the entire application on screen at
once.

There appears to be some space which could be saved by shrinking
horizontally a couple of components on each page.

Steps to reproduce

* Install Ubuntu 20.04.
* Set system resolution to 1366x768
* Install gtk3-examples
* Alt-f2, gtk3-widget-factory

Expected outcome

* Entire widget factory should fit on the screen

Actual outcome

* The widget factory window is off the right hand side of the screen

Workaround

Set the launcher to auto hide, to make room.
I don't consider this suitable, because part of the point of gtk widget factory
is to test the theme, the experience, the out of the box install. Being unable
to actually get the window on the screen seems a flawed set of tests.

[Bug 1858368] [NEW] single-day events on 1st of month show on all days of preceding month

2020-01-05 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Single-day events on 1st of month show on all days of preceding month.

For example, someone's birthday on April 1 will show up (in the month
view) as being a month-long event during all of March.

I am using a NextCloud calendar. The events look OK on the NextCloud
web-based calendar, on my iphone, and on Mac's Calendar.app.

Those same events appear fine in the week view... they are not stretched
into the previous month.

[Bug 1857038] [NEW] package gnome-control-center-shared-data (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/pixmaps/faces/launch.jpg', which is also in package gnome-contro

2019-12-19 Thread Alan L Wilson
Public bug reported:

I am trying to run gnome-control-center but keep getting an error stating
'Execution of "gnome-control-center" failed: Command not found.' I get this
error after I click on the printer icon then click on "Printers". When I try to
install "gnome-control-center" I get these:
gnome-control-center : Depends: libcheese-gtk25 (>= 3.18.0) but it is not going
to be installed
Depends: libcheese8 (>= 3.18.0) but it is not going to
be installed

When I try to install these packages, this happens:
 libcheese8 : Depends: gstreamer1.0-plugins-good (>= 0.11.0) but it is not
going to be installed

As a result, I am unable to open gnome-control-center and therefore
cannot install my Canon MX922 printer.

Steps to reproduce

Launch gnome-software

[Bug 1848009] [NEW] Delay launching application launcher gets longer the more apps are open

2019-10-14 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

On latest up to date daily image on my ThinkPad X220 / i7 / 16GB / 150GB SSD.
If I launch a bunch of applications - possibly a slightly unreasonable number,
but a lot anyway - with minimal CPU or memory in use, the button to launch
applications in the bottom left takes progressively longer to run.

Video showing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRbFk-n9KzQ

Steps to reproduce.
Open application launcher
Note a ~0.6s delay before the icons fly onto the screen
Open GNOME Software
Install all the editors picks
Launch a bunch of applications
Click the application launcher
Note a 4s delay before icons fly onto the screen.

Expectation
Honestly, no delay at all, but it should be at least consistent with when no
applications are running, so 0.6s delay as per the state when no apps are
launched.

[Bug 1847740] [NEW] Auto-hide dock causes clock/notification to move

2019-10-11 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

When disabling / enabling hiding of the dock - or indeed changing the
width of the dock - in system settings - the clock / notification area
moves. These feels wrong. The clock is not related to the dock size, and
should not move with it. The clock should be in the centre of the
display, not the centre of the usable area of the desktop I believe.

Steps to reproduce

Open system settings
Select dock
change the toggle to auto-hide the dock
Observe the clock move with the toggle

Expected behaviour

Clock/notification are is locked to the middle of the screen.

[Bug 1846477] [NEW] Dragging icons in launcher is slow until shell restarted

2019-10-03 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

Today I noticed that dragging icons up and down the launcher is
painfully slow, to the point where it feels like the desktop has locked
up. The gnome-shell process is pegged at 100% while this is happening.

Restarting gnome shell (alt+f2, r) makes it faster to refresh the move
of the icon but still super slow at drawing the line where you drop it.

However, it's super fast on clean boot of a separate machine - x220 (7
years old i7) and another nvidia 960 gpu equipped i7 laptop.

I also see this behaviour with other SDL applications if fullscreened
using the Wayland backend.

E.g.

snap install --edge mir-kiosk-neverputt
mir-kiosk-neverputt

I don't see the same effect on weston, sway or Mir based servers.

Had a few desktop shell lockups. Pattern seems to be when running snap
refresh, but this time happened when running snapcraft --use-lxd. Feels
like something related to mounting / unmounting devices. Got this from

[Bug 1844222] [NEW] Wayland session overlaid by black window when fullscreen scummvm exits

2019-09-17 Thread Alan Griffiths
Public bug reported:

Seen on 18.04 and 19.10

In the "Ubuntu Wayland" desktop

sudo apt install beneath-a-steel-sky
SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland scummvm -f -p /usr/share/scummvm/beneath-a-steel-sky sky

Press ESC a few times and Ctrl-Q to exit.

Expect: session returns to normal
Actual: a black rectangle covers the screen, even when switching workspaces.

(I'm sure scummvm is doing something odd, but...)

[Bug 1812841] [NEW] Installing / Removal behaves differently depending on how GNOME Software is launched

2019-01-22 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

Summary.

Launching GS manually from the launcher, and navigating to an app and clicking
install works fine.
Launching GS via clicking a link in the snapcraft webstore causes GS to require
a snap login.

Scenario.

Trying to install software using the green "Install" button via the
snapcraft web store.

Steps to reproduce

1) Open Firefox on Ubuntu 18.04
2) Visit https://snapcraft.io/wps-office-all-lang-no-internet
3) Click the green "Install" button
4) Click "View in Desktop Store"
5) Click "Software" in the popup box to launch GNOME Software

Observe an error in GS "Unable to install 'WPS Office - All langiages -
No internet': authentication was required

6) Click "Install" in GNOME Software

Observe an "Authenticate" dialog appears.

Expected behaviour.

At step 5 no error should occur.
At step 6 no popup should appear, app should install.

Further.

7) Do not login, close GNOME Software
8) Open GNOME Software from the launcher
9) Search for WPS, click it in the results
10) Click "Install"

Observe that the software installs fine.

It does not need to be set by default but at least having the option to have
Nautilus remember the view per directory would be great. This is probably the
only reason I don't use Nautilus and I would like to return but cannot because
of this annoying bug.
Thanks for listening and hopefully somebody can have pity on us and work on
