Spoke to soon. Resizing snapped windows works sometimes, not all the
time.

[Bug 1719047] Re: Unable to resize window after snapped to half screen.

2017-10-08 Thread Alex Willmer
I had the same problem following an in-place upgrade from Zesty+Unity to
Artful. With the possible exception that my mouse pointer didn't even
change to "the arrow, tempting you" when hovering over the window
border.

I did an apt upgrade, an apt uninstall of *unity*, and a reboot. I can
now resize snapped windows. For reference I currently have mutter
3.26.1, and libgtk+3.0 3.22.21.0ubuntu1.

[Bug 206837] Re: Gedit text area has small gap between edge of text area and edge of window

2008-11-17 Thread Alex Willmer
The ptoblem is actually with the tab control of GTK, so it shows up in
Gedit, Pidgin, Nautilus and several others. Firefox doesn't exhibit it,
I believe because they don't contain controls in the tab panels, but
merely use the tabs as a signal to switch by other means.

[Bug 287848] [NEW] Gnome panel menus can obscure panel

[Bug 238037] [NEW] Evolution does not reflow quoted plain-text emails

2008-06-06 Thread Alex Willmer

Feature request.

Some plain-text emails arrive without hard text wrap at 80 columns.
Evolution correctly word wraps these when viewed, paragraphs wrap at
window edge.

However when replying to such an email, the text is not wrapped in any
way, paragraphs appear on a single line.

Evolution should wrap such emails by insertion of newline characters

[Bug 201762] Re: [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone

2008-04-06 Thread Alex Willmer
I vote return to Gutsy behaviour. IMO both Gutsy and Hardy have broken
behaviour, namely that g-p-m periodically overrides my set-by-Fn+Up/Down
day to day choice on backlight brightness. At least with Gutsy I could
choice the set point.

My ideal scenario would be to have the dialog with 0..100% sliders for
the set point on battery AC. However when I use the keyboard
combination, that also configures the same set point for the current
mode.

That's what I tried to describe above. Alex.

[Bug 206837] [NEW] Gedit text area has small gap between edge of text area and edge of window

2008-03-25 Thread Alex Willmer

There is a 1 pixel gap between the edge of the window and the edge of

[Bug 201762] Re: [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone

2008-03-25 Thread Alex Willmer
In 2.22.0-0ubuntu2 it would appear that both sliders are gone, I see
only a slider to control screen blanking delay.

Is something like https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec
/backlight-brightness-simplicity in the works? I.e. gpm managed back
light brightness is determined during day to day adjustment. If so, I
think it would still be good to have the sliders, for those who aren't
aware of the keyboard shortcuts.

It may be too late for hardy. I would propose two sliders, one for mains
mode and one for battery. Each slider controls back light brightness,
from 0 to 100%. There is no reason I see that the back light must be
dimmer on battery than on mains, it is just common practice. Having each
slider have the same effect simplifies the mental workload and provides
greater control.

Use case:
1. Alice charges her laptop in a dimly lit lab, whilst uploading field work.
She has the back light set low to avoid glare.
2. Once charged she takes the laptop off mains and outside into bright
daylight. She sets the back light to full brightness to gather data in the
field, this level is stored by gpm as the default for battery mode.
3. Later the sun sets, she dims the back light, this level is stored as the
default for battery mode.
4. Upon returning to the lab Alice places the laptop on charge, the original
back light brightness is restored to the that stored for mains mode.

[Bug 206837] Re: Gedit text area has small gap between edge of text area and edge of window

2008-03-25 Thread Alex Willmer
As the upstream report refers to, Fitts law is the name for the
principal violated. The upstream report also refers to the tab container
as being a trigger. I can confirm this for Gnome Terminal - without
tabs (a single term) the scroll bar is at screen edge when maximised,
with 2 tabs the 1 pixel gap appears. Gedit always shows the tab
control, even with only one document open. Hence the border is always
there.

Attached is a screen shot to illustrate the problem.

[Bug 75658] Directory properties: Contents field doesn't indicate progress

2006-12-13 Thread Alex Willmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When properties are viewed for a large directory (eg /usr), it takes
some time to scan all children and calcualate total items/size. Locally
it is discernable when this has finished, due hard disk activity.

When querying a remote directory or using a remote X session, subject to
variable network latency, there is no indication that scanning has
completed perhams leading to wrong interpretation by the user.

A hint - perhaps using shading, a spinner or a '(working)' suffix -
would resolve this.
