[Bug 83889] Re: apt shows incorrect language strings if used with specific locale settings - and aborts package installation if you confirm installation
Just 2 cents... If it will be changed, it should be done properly. Justification: in Russian localized version acceptable answers are [Д/н], which corresponds to English [Y/n]. In this respect we had problem with aptitude, if I remember correctly, which accepted (or still accepts, can not check this right now) all variants: localized and non- localized. The catch is: in the layout of Russian keyboard Cyrillic н, which corresponds to no, is the same key as English y and if person is not paying attention to current keyboard layout the final result while selecting Russian н will be the opposite of intended. I would rather make it untranslatable and not dependable on current locale: * no problems if language is set, but switching of keyboard layout does not work by any reason (workaround is easy, but one have to know it) * situations like described above are not possible -- apt shows incorrect language strings if used with specific locale settings - and aborts package installation if you confirm installation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/83889 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 435788] Re: Clock shows 12 hour format in locales that do not support it
After short investigation... GDM implementation of clock-widget does not use format-string defined for time in locale. Instead it uses hard- coded, although translatable, format string for clock output. Therefore for now problem may be solved by properly adapting translations of the original format strings for time and datetime. There are two in gdm.po: msgid %l:%M %p msgid %l:%M:%S %p Date format string may be also of interest: msgid %a %b %e Better solution would be to use appropriate format strings defined in locale. Since there might be justification for current choice, I do not know how feasible it is. -- Clock shows 12 hour format in locales that do not support it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435788 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 202950] Re: [Hardy] GMD's language doesn't change when using another default language
May be I also got confused by this. Can someone clearly explain, how the system should behave? And how one can alter behavior of the system? What setting GDM relies upon? The one in System - Administration - Language Support - Default Language? Then what is the idea behind asking a user to reload a login screen in different language if the very next time upon login user will get it again in default language and will be confused? My guess it confuses not only me or people involved in this bug (or feature) discussion but some other people as well, see for example bug #202418: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/202418 and may be there are other similar bugs were filed. -- [Hardy] GMD's language doesn't change when using another default language https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202950 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
Re: [Bug 202950] Re: [Hardy] GMD's language doesn't change when using another default language
Thanks for clarification. I guess, I have to play with it a bit more. Probably, the message or the text on the controls should clarify, that the change of the language on the login banner is intended for one login only and hint about the system-wide language settings, which are used by default. BTW, in which language the message asking for reload is displayed? The newly selected one, or the old one? ... here I was checking how it actually works... Some time later. OK. I see now. System locale: en_US.UTF-8 User selects: ru_RU.UTF-8 Once user request a change of language, he/she gets a dialog with the question[1] + explanation[2]: [1]Do you wish to restart the login screen with the chosen language? [2] You will restart the login screen with the ru_RU.UTF-8 locale. |No| |*Yes*| Which is cryptic (locale notation used instead of the language), and might be not helpful at all if user does not understand system-wide language. First, it might be wise to change the message, explaining, that the banner is changed for one login only. Second, it might be helpful to display the message in two languages simultaneously (system wide + newly chosen), i.e. it will look like system wide locale message + translation in one. Thanks. On Mon, Mar 24, 2008 at 2:03 PM, Sebastien Bacher [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The login banner is a system one, it can't know what user is going to login next so it uses the system default language. You can change this setting using the language selector. Now if you are going to log in, select a language, it's easy to guess that the user on the keyboard wants to get this language used and gdm suggest reloading the banner in the locale you are interested using so you can understand the option.
