2018-01-10 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
@Daniel

Even
env -u DISPLAY -u WAYLAND_DISPLAY ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash

does not provide needed link.

Are there any system settings that can affect this behavior?

[Bug 787475] Re: Rhythmbox [0.12.8] [0.12.5] Not Fetching Album Information From MusicBrainz

2011-07-03 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Despite suggestion above that it may work with 10.10... Well, it does
not, I just faced this issue. If I read it correctly, the problem is in
libmusicbrainz4c2a and it looks like the same version is used in 10.10
and 11.04, i.e. the functionality is broken through the whole range of
Ubuntu versions. I think this bug deserves higher priority.

[Bug 83889] Re: apt shows incorrect language strings if used with specific locale settings - and aborts package installation if you confirm installation

2010-10-28 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Just 2 cents... If it will be changed, it should be done properly.

Justification: in Russian localized version acceptable answers are
[Д/н], which corresponds to English [Y/n]. In this respect we had
problem with aptitude, if I remember correctly, which accepted (or still
accepts, can not check this right now) all variants: localized and non-
localized. The catch is: in the layout of Russian keyboard Cyrillic н,
which corresponds to no, is the same key as English y and if person
is not paying attention to current keyboard layout the final result
while selecting Russian н will be the opposite of intended.

I would rather make it untranslatable and not dependable on current locale:
* no problems if language is set, but switching of keyboard layout does not
work by any reason (workaround is easy, but one have to know it)
* situations like described above are not possible

And I don't think that the bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/307798 where I
described the situation from the comment above is the duplicate of this
particular problem.

[Bug 435788] Re: Clock shows 12 hour format in locales that do not support it

2010-05-21 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
After short investigation... GDM implementation of clock-widget does not
use format-string defined for time in locale. Instead it uses hard-
coded, although translatable, format string for clock output.

Therefore for now problem may be solved by properly adapting translations of
the original format strings for time and datetime. There are two in gdm.po:
msgid %l:%M %p
msgid %l:%M:%S %p

Date format string may be also of interest:
msgid %a %b %e

Better solution would be to use appropriate format strings defined in
locale. Since there might be justification for current choice, I do not
know how feasible it is.

2009-10-14 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

Please update translations. For example, for Russian only 55% of strings
are translated in the packaged .mo, at the same time upstream
translation is 100% complete. Strings from this package are exposed in
various places (see bug 448734) and we as translators can not do a thing
about it ourselves, since the package does not use Launchpad

2009-09-15 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
I observe the very same problem on MSI Wind U90x on the up to date
Karmic UNR (2009-09-15) system.

Brightness changes back and forth for a while. If you wait, the flashing
actually stops, when the battery icon appears, both in GDM screen and in
the desktop as well. Combined with notify-osd it is very annoying.

But I do not think, that it is the problem of Nautilus. Since, I
observed the most of the problems described in the initial report with

It looks like this is an intended behavior (i.e. [d]effective by
design).

It seams to be that Log-off/Log-on step is crucial here. Since by
default Ubuntu invokes xdg-user-dirs-update, which resets empty folders
corresponding to anything set in .config/user_dirs.dirs to $HOME and
nautilus respects this setting further on.

[Bug 231736] Re: Touchpad changes behavior when using left-handed mouse

2008-06-05 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
I can confirm this behavior on Dell Inspiron 640m and Ubuntu 8.04 To
check it you need only laptop with mouse and touchpad.

As it was already suggested, tap on a touchpad should always be resolved
to a left mouse button click of right handed mouse (do not know how to
explain this more clearly).

There is not really convenient workaround: one may switch off treatment
of taps as a mouse button clicks and use touchpad only for cursor
movement and touchpad buttons for clicks.

[Bug 202950] Re: [Hardy] GMD's language doesn't change when using another default language

2008-03-24 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
May be I also got confused by this.

Can someone clearly explain, how the system should behave? And how one
can alter behavior of the system?

What setting GDM relies upon? The one in System - Administration -
Language Support - Default Language?

Then what is the idea behind asking a user to reload a login screen in
different language if the very next time upon login user will get it
again in default language and will be confused?

My guess it confuses not only me or people involved in this bug (or
feature) discussion but some other people as well, see for example bug
#202418: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/202418 and
may be there are other similar bugs were filed.

Re: [Bug 202950] Re: [Hardy] GMD's language doesn't change when using another default language

2008-03-24 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Thanks for clarification. I guess, I have to play with it a bit more.

Probably, the message or the text on the controls should clarify, that
the change of the language on the login banner is intended for one
login only and hint about the system-wide language settings, which are
used by default. BTW, in which language the message asking for reload
is displayed? The newly selected one, or the old one?

... here I was checking how it actually works... Some time later.

OK. I see now.

User selects: ru_RU.UTF-8

Once user request a change of language, he/she gets a dialog with the
question[1] + explanation[2]:
[1]Do you wish to restart the login screen with the chosen language?
[2] You will restart the login screen with the ru_RU.UTF-8 locale.
|No| |*Yes*|

Which is cryptic (locale notation used instead of the language), and
might be not helpful at all if user does not understand system-wide
language.

First, it might be wise to change the message, explaining, that the
banner is changed for one login only. Second, it might be helpful to
display the message in two languages simultaneously (system wide +
newly chosen), i.e. it will look like system wide locale message +
translation in one.

Thanks.

wants to get this language used and gdm suggest reloading the banner in
the locale you are interested using so you can understand the option.
That's not because one user has decided to try some other locale than
the system default should be changed for everybody though, this option
only takes effect for the current session

[Bug 203108] [NEW] [hardy] Brightness level on battery is not consistent with user adjustments

2008-03-17 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

Hardy, pre-beta, up to date.
Dell Inspiron 640m https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron640m

Steps to reproduce behavior:
1. Switch to battery power (brightness of the display reduces to the level of
approx 1/3)
2. Adjust brightness as desired (lets say 1/2)
3. Switch to AC (brightness - 100)
4. Switch to battery. It looks like the brightness drops to the same value as
in 1.

Another sequence:
1. 2. as above.
3. Wait till monitor dims out.
4. Do something to wake up the system. Brightness again adjusted to some
strange level (As in 1.).

Expected behavior: Once set for particular mode (AC power or Battery)
brightness level should remain consistently on the same level upon mode
switch.

[Bug 135484] Re: Failed to execute child process -x (No such file or directory)

2007-09-03 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Found a problem.

There is an inconsistency in handling settings for preferred terminal if
one enables/disables 3D desktop (at least via System-Preferences-
Appearance).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Disable settings for terminal without 3D. Disable settings for terminal with
3D (let's say put custom, without a command in both cases)
2. Enable your favorite terminal while 3D desktop is off.
3. Enable 3D desktop. I get here still Custom option without a command.
4. Disable 3D desktop. Now I get the same, Custom option without a command in
my desktop without 3D.

It looks like option made active while 3D desktop was turned on
propagates back to a normal desktop settings, while it does not work
other way.

[Bug 135484] Re: Failed to execute child process -x (No such file or directory)

2007-08-29 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Ah, now I see were the problem is.

In fact, I did not configure anything. Probably, It was messed up during
the update process. In preferred applications I had Custom selected
without a command. It would have been nice, if Ubuntu could point me
directly to the problem or suggest to check these settings.

Problem solved. Thanks a lot.

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

The way to get borderless screenshot is to run gnome-screenshot in

[Bug 84086] Re: [apport] serpentine crashed with AssertionError in _get_progress()

2007-02-21 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Yep. I confirm. The same thing here.

Crash report dialog pops up, but serpentine just works and finishes the
writing. Produced disks are ok.

The only thing I can add is that it happened twice in a row. Both times
just before serpentine reported Preparing recording (under the
progress bar) after Preparing media.

PS Didn't find how to say attach bug info collected by crash report tool
to existing bug report or whereabouts of this info/files, possibly a god
feature to be implemented on apport/Launchpad.

Spell checking is enabled. It actually works, but it does not work for

is wrong with that word. Although, it works if there is just one more
extra symbol (space, end-of-line or whatever).
