To give more info about this regression:
The issue was caused by this commit that does not appear to be mentioned
in the gnome-shell package changelog, but was manually cherry picked in
Debian/Ubuntu because it is not present in the released gnome-shell

updating the system (including latest snapd), making sure I have the
