[Bug 808890] [NEW] when X starts up neither keyboard nor touchpad is working

2011-07-11 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Oneiric the built in keyboard and touchpad on my
eeepc 1002HA are not longer responding. The keyboard will accept input
in a console and if I connect a usb keyboard and trackball those will
respond. However I need to unplug and replug them everytime gdm is
started, simply leaving them plugged in does not work.

[Bug 644644] Re: Frequent PA crashes during playback - pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated and pa_stream_writable_size(): Connection failed

2011-01-23 Thread David Nielsen
The #86 issue, at least using the GStreamer package only, seems to be
confined to Banshee. Totem seems fine. I will file this to upstream
Banshee for examination.

Actually I am seeing the #86 issue with the PPA on Natty today which
only pulls in the Gstreamer package (as there is a newer PA in Natty
than the PPA).

[Bug 697699] [NEW] Uncaught crash when importing DVD as image

2011-01-05 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Currently in Natty I am seeing a crash in Nautilus that is uncaught by
Apport.

(likely requires libdvdcss)

1) insert DVD
2) in the Computer nautilus view right click DVD and select copy disc.
3) set as an image
4) when finished, insert new disc.
5) Now for some reason you need to hit reload or the copy disc option does not
appear
6) Click copy disc

Now Nautilus crashes, however the DVD can be imported once Nautilus has
been restarted.

Why this is uncaught by apport I don't know, also launch Nautilus in a
terminal does not provide any helpful output.

In dmesg this seems to appear after every crash.

[Bug 688525] [NEW] On multi protocol account setups I show up in the buddylist

2010-12-10 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

On setup with multiple accounts in Empathy, e.g. MSN, Gtalk and Local
people, I find that when all are online I have a person registered on my
buddy list who is in fact me. Considering that I know I am online and

[Bug 585453] [NEW] poor performance when transferring over cifs

2010-05-25 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

I just bought a Western Digital My Book World II 4TB NAS which does
transfers over nfs, ftp and cifs. I would prefer cifs since that is
easier to be discovered in nautilus currently and unlike nfs support
doesn't hang. However while the NAS has a tiny 200Mhz ARM cpu it is
capable of doing roughly 13MB/s via nfs but over cifs nautilus only
reports 1.3MB/s over cifs (reports and this is the actual speed as
well).

[Bug 585458] [NEW] pre copy unmouning should be handled better

2010-05-25 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

To reproduce:

0) reset all autohandling of DVDs
1) Insert movie in DVD drive
(it will now be mounted)
2) go to Computer
3) select copy disc in context menu for DVD
(personally here I do iso images, libdvdcss may be needed here)

Now brasero will unmount the CD and the next dialog the user sees is It
is now safe to remove the disc.

This however is not true and should the user do this bad stuff(tm)
ensues. The user asks us to do something, he follows the instructs and
we fail.

Could we perhaps repress the dialog?

[Bug 481197] Re: unable to mount location - failed to retrieve share list from server

2010-05-23 Thread David Nielsen
I can reproduce this out of the box on my home network. I just bought a
WD MyBook World II 4TB NAS which supports CIFS.

1) connect NAS to network
2) open Places-Network
3) Click Windows Network

Expected result out of the box would be that the NAS shares appear and
that I am asked for user name and password to access it.

This is really disappointing.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1490166

Please revert the patch and continue testing in an opt-in ppa with a
proper call for testing being issued, till such a time as the patch and
our applications are ready for the feature to be merged. Right now it is
holding up all other testing which is unacceptable.

[Bug 508214] Re: Bastard mode in Quadrapassel should be renamed

2010-04-30 Thread David Nielsen
The main problem with Bastard mode isn't political correctness, it's
translations. Bastard Mode is very hard to translate, it carries meaning
fairly well in English but is hard to get right in some other languages.

The user might also not fully understand what the impact of this option
is. I would thus propose it be replaced with Pick next piece for
highest difficulty or a similar wording.

I believe we still could get just webcams working, it still works with
aMSN. I really would like to see that available in Empathy as it is all
I need to switch. I get the voice part from Skype since I have that on
my phone and my n810 which unlike my computer I can carry those around
the house or take with me to town while I talk to my girlfriend.

[Bug 541612] [NEW] [wishlist] add option to allow user to install signed packages

2010-03-18 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-tools-backends

It would be really nice if the default tool for handling user accounts
would include an option to allow users to install signed packages and
update the system. While this might be a security risk, this also might
be something a user might very well want to allow to convience. Most
users will trust the signed packages anyways so there is little point is
not having this be an option to always all for user accounts.

[Bug 475943] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-03-08 Thread David Nielsen
I found that you can reproduce this by using file-roller to unpack
something. This will create a new folder into which the files will go
during uncompressing. Attempting to open the folder at a time when it is
still visible in nautilus but has been deleted by file-roller will
trigger the crash. It is tricky to time but happens from time to time.

[Bug 534083] [NEW] resizing is wrong when re-enabling show controls

2010-03-07 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When re-enabling showing of controls totem resizes the window to be 100%
of the height of the screen instead of retaining it's desired 1:1 size.

Totem is set up to set window size automatically when loading videos

1) open video
2) disable showing of controls
3) right click video and select show controls

Now vertically totem is huge, pressing 1 will bring it back but it
didn't do this untill recently.

[Bug 529415] [NEW] BBC enabled SWF Verification which disables the BBC plugin

the BBC plugin useless. As this is effectively DRM'ed content which now
relies on proprietary closed technologies to view I believe it would be
the best interest of Ubuntu to either remove the plugin or convince the
BBC to allow access to it again.

2010-01-07 Thread David Nielsen
My apologies, I forgot to check, it won't happen again.

About the Banshee issue I should have mentioned that I use the banshee-
daily ppa upgraded from karmic. I know that puts it in the unsupported
realm, but as it has been a while since the last stable banshee release
we can expect a lot of users to go for the unstable test releases for
the features or for bugfixes so I still think it has merit.

[Bug 491521] Re: Decorations and RGBA

2010-01-06 Thread David Nielsen
With the updated gtk package from the ppa all the crashing I saw before
seems to have vanished, further stress testing needed naturally but so
far so good. The only problem I've experienced is that now gdm takes
forever and a day to come up, so long in fact that I thought X died.

2010-01-06 Thread David Nielsen
I spoke to soon, both totem and banshee crash with the all to familiar
BadMatch message (is there a good reason why Apport doesn't catch these
btw?):

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

Cody, now the gtk version in the ppa is older than the one on the Lucid
repo it is my understanding that we cannot effectively install and test
a compatible gtk package. Do you plan to put RGBA support directly in
Lucid or updating the PPA so that testing can go on?

[Bug 500648] [NEW] add ability to hide buddy list

2009-12-26 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

In Karmic Empathy has been altered to use the message indicator, however
this also means that unlike with regular empathy you cannot hide the

having to have the buddylist open at all times cluttering the interface.

[Bug 493286] [NEW] occasionally nautilus fails to display every file in a folder

2009-12-06 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Occasionally Nautilus won't display every file in a given folder. One
can verify using the terminal that the files are actually there, they
are however not showing up in the nautilus window.

To workaround it one can, in nautilus, create a folder in the affected

affected folder it will now contain the correct amount of files and the
folder can be deleted without reaffecting the folder.

[Bug 417666] [NEW] totem-nautilus should not attempt to create thumbnails for files being downloaded or copied

2009-08-23 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem's thumbnail application has an annoying habit of attempting to
create thumbnails for files that are currently being downloaded or
copied. Due to the fact that these files keep changing and are
incomplete this causes the thumbnail creator to suck up 100% in many

The obvious solution seems to be not attempting thumbnail extraction on

I am seeing this as well, but only when utilizing the proprietary nvidia

[Bug 360383] [NEW] epiphany icon doesn't show up in the application menu

2009-04-13 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

The icon for Epiphany does not show up on the menu. To make it appear do
the following

1) install epiphany-browser
2) right click menu bar and select edit menus (alacarte)
3) go to the Internet entry and notice how epiphany has an enabled tick.
4) untick it, then tick it again
5) upon exiting you now have your epiphany icon back.

All that however should not be needed.

[Bug 358714] [NEW] Ability to set GMail (or similar webmail) as preferred email client

2009-04-09 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Probably most users today are using webmail over a desktop client such
as Evolution. It would thus be nice if the gnome-default-applications-
properties application would allow a user to set his preferred email
client according to a list of popular providers such as GMail, Yahoo and
Hotmail.

This should also impact the indicator applet to notify on new mails but
the most important bit would be not breaking mailto: links for people on
webmail. We live in a web 2.0 world and it would be great to acknowledge
that by integrating better with the most commonly used services such as
webmail.

[Bug 341418] [NEW] volume applets isn't smart enough to figure out which card is in use

2009-03-11 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

The basic problem here is that I have two soundcards, the built in Intel
one in my laptop and the external USB card I use when I am at home
(since that has digital connectors). However the volume applet isn't
smart enough to figure out which card is in use therefore it seems to
default to the intel one which it displays as muted. Also any
interaction appears to happen on the intel card, when in fact the usb
card is in active use and configured by Pulseaudio.

[Bug 115203] No longer acknowledges translations

[Bug 109192] Lacks bitrate/codec setting and sync option for iPod

2007-04-23 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox has the capabilities to add tracks to portable players like
the popular iPods, however the interface has no obvious sync button
when you select the iPod in the sidebar. Additionally there does not
seem to be a dialog to set the profile you want to transcode files with,
nor even a gconf key, this would be a nice addition.

[Bug 109192] Re: Lacks bitrate/codec setting and sync option for iPod

2007-04-23 Thread David Nielsen
The sync button would naturally syncronize the database on the iPod with
the Rhythmbox database (Banshee has a similar concept). Transcoding
would be the act of turning in my case FLAC and Vorbis files into files
supported by the portable player (mp3), this should be supported to any
format gstreamer can encode and any settings the player supports,
however it seems to have the mp3 value hardcoded likewise the bitrate
settings - at least I have been entirely unable to see what profile it
uses by default.

Rhythmbox does do the transcoding, it's just not configurable which can
lead to problems, especially since it seems to encode mp3s that aren't
playable on the iPod at times (I'm still narrowing that one down, I'll
open a bug once I figure out what's missfiring).

[Bug 109192] Re: Lacks bitrate/codec setting and sync option for iPod

2007-04-23 Thread David Nielsen
Okay since this seems to be hard to convey let's go by example.

The user first hooks up iPod to his machine and copies over everything
in the database to the iPod next the user takes iPod to a friends house,
picks up new tunes (iPod content is now latest copy of the local
rhythmbox database plus the new content from the friend). Now the user
goes home, adds some content to his local rhythmbox (say he downloads a
few podcasts or something). Then he remembers that he got some new songs
on the iPod so he hooks that up. The objective is now to syncronize the
content on the iPod and the local database so that both places has new
local content plus new content acquired via the iPod.

I am on the GNOME bugzilla
