[Bug 976534] Re: Rhythmbox cummulates memory in precise - probably memory leak

2012-04-16 Thread GonzO
Yup.

This is with all plugins and crossfading backend disabled, too. It
*looks like* its caching the song in memory, and never releasing it -
memory usage goes up every time there is a song change, be it natural or
prompted (ff/rewind buttons).

This is completely unusuable; you can *easily* accumulate hundreds, if
not thousands, of RAM by simply pushing FF a bunch of times.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

Resizing a window in 10.04 with Ambiance is a nightmare.

What *he* said.

I've increased all my borders to 5px. fixes the problem, but makes
things look uglier than they should. I'd vote to just fix the
appearance of windows with 5px borders, instead of wasting time trying
to get in there and change the grab-zone.

[Bug 317948] Re: ctrl+c doesn't interrupt running process

2010-06-07 Thread Gonzo
I know how to compile. You've just swerved to an off-topic conversation
yourself, not me. My question was 'how did you do it exactly while
keeping higher versions of its dependencies and possible breakage of
something concerning this'. I've also tried this and it works, but I'm
not sure that it won't do bad things somewhere else. Ok, thanks for your

[Bug 204202] Re: gnome-terminal ignores current keyboard layout for ctrl+key shortcuts

2010-05-05 Thread Gonzo
2MilkaJinka:

This doesn't fix the problem. I already have USA (default) and Russian.
Adding Dvorak doesn't do anything. The problem is still here, Ctrl+C
doesn't quit any process like 'ping' or simply doesn't add a new line in
gnome-terminal (with USA layout of course). By the way I have Ctrl+C
assigned to copy any text in the terminal, but it was assigned in
previous version of Ubuntu and it worked as expected.

[Bug 12608] Re: 'keep aligned' does not work right

2009-06-11 Thread GonzO
Suggestion 1: the upper-left hand corner of each icon is what should be
aligned to the grid. (I am aware that this may cause icons of differing
sizes to overlap when aligned, but I'm not entirely certain stretch
icon is easy enough to do - or popularly used enough - to compromise
the keep aligned functionality.

Suggestion 2: One could also dim out the keep aligned option if any
icons are stretched, given how difficult it would be to actually
align/keep aligned icons of varied sizes.

2008-12-14 Thread Gonzo
Let me tell you something interesting...
Well, I can confirm I was also getting this bug on Ubuntu 8.04 and,
surprisingly, today on Ubuntu 8.10...
I did nothing to misconfigure my system actually. I just install NVidia driver
myself using their .run packages from the official site. After installing their
latest BETA 180.16 the gnome-panel trash applet stopped showing its actual
status (when I delete smth. the icon remains empty, but if I click on it - the
deleted stuff is there. Also, the 'Empty trash' link is active.
I decided to uninstall nvidia driver back to previous BETA 180.11 and now it's
ok with the trash applet.
Strange?

[Bug 196193] [NEW] Epiphany 2.21.90 (Hardy Alpha 5) can't import bookmarks from any source

2008-02-27 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Hardy Heron, Alpha 5 + updates current to Feb. 27, 2008

Epiphany 2.21.90

I can't import bookmarks from any supported Epiphany method on Hardy
Heron.

I have imported my Firefox bookmarks into Firefox 3.0. I opened
Epiphany, and told it to import from Firefox. No failure registers, but
no bookmarks appear.

I have exported my bookmarks from Gutsy's epiphany and Firefox 2.0, and
copied the bookmarks.html and bookmarks.rdf into my filesystem. But
when I try to tell Epiphany to import either of them, I get a dialog box
with the following message:

IMPORT FAILED
The bookmarks from “bookmarks2.html” could not be imported because the file is
corrupted or of an unsupported type.

So far, I seem to be completely unable to get my bookmarks into Hardy's
Epiphany 2.21.90 at all.

[Bug 30969] Re: monitor goes to standby when playing a movie in totem fullscreen

2007-04-02 Thread GonzO
I have a workaround for this, and have had one since Edgy. I thought I
posted it here, but it doesn't look like I did, so:

I commented out

screensaver and gnome-power-manager.

I have no idea why this works; I saw the workaround in a Gentoo thread a
while ago and applied it to all my personal computers. It seems to

2006-06-15 Thread dr. gonzo
In the submission I wrote that running update-menus fixes the problem,
but then during another install, the problem comes back. Bug is that I
shouldn't have to run update-menus form the console every time I install

should not just disappear.

All in all it is not a showstopper bug, just annoying. Besides, most

2006-05-26 Thread GonzO
This is a really old problem. The old GNOME cross was cropped for
sure in my GAIM windows.

Perhaps this should be a scalable icon? (The right answer, of course,
would be for app developers to actually give this icon the space it
needs in GTK ui's...)

[Bug 13986] Re: MP3/AAC not offered as encoding formats in Preferences, even with encoders+gstreamer plugins for these installed

2006-05-19 Thread GonzO
This doesn't sound right. If its not possible to add a profile
programatically, how did the default four profiles get there?

SOMEthing has the default four profile definitions in it - that package
should be edited. (Or, ideally, profiles should be done away with
altogether - I thing they add an extra layer to something which is
complex enough for the average user who's probably already used to
choosing filetype/compression strength by hand on sites like iTunes and
allofmp3 anyhow).

[Bug 35112] Re: MP3 track times are incorrect

2006-05-18 Thread GonzO
Neither seems to work. However: the time DOES report right in Xmms and
BMP, and the file access is a little less wonky (previously, the
incorrect files used to take longer to process and select - I had
assumed that this was because of the incorrect times).

However, Rhythmbox still sees the time way off - a 5:00 song was
reported as being 28 and change in RB. So, either it didn't work, or it
did work, and RB doesn't know what to do with xing headers.

How can I differentiate?

[Bug 44992] After installing applications on Ubuntu Dapper Beta un-affected Debian menu entries disappear

2006-05-16 Thread dr. gonzo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-menus

This is Ubuntu Dapper Beta.

Debian menu is installed. Alacarte was used to edit the menu a number of
times.

After installing application with Synaptic, many entries (whole
categories) from the Debian menu disappear.
It seems that the entries that are on top are gone most often (i.e.
Databases is most often gone, while Viewers which is much lower is
left intact most often). This happens even if un-related programs are
installed, in other words even if programs that do not necessarily have
a menu entry in a particular menu category will make that category
disappear sometimes.

The way to fix the problem is to run update-menus script after each
time that Synaptic is run.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Install some applications with Synaptic
2. Check the Debian menu structure

Actual Results:
Some parts of the Debian menu will disappear.
NOTE: There isn't any consistency as to how many categories from the
menu disappear.

Expected Results:
Applications that do not have any entries in the particular menu
categories shouldn't affect the menu structure at all

How often does this happen?
Everytime, but the number of affected menu entries that are gone, varies
greatly, sometimes the whole subcategories are gone, sometimes just a
few menu entries.

Additional Information:
Perhaps that there an update script that re-generates the menus but
which is not allowed to run to completion. So if the menu is being
re-generated but the script is killed only a part of the menu is
processed and appears in the menu structure.

** Affects: gnome-menus (Ubuntu)

[Bug 44339] Re: Regression in usplash artwork

2006-05-12 Thread GonzO
I agree. The old one was way better, and actually fit in with the color
scheme. I don't see why it was changed, actually. If anything, the old
usplash only needed the text or progress bar to be slightly more orange
- to fit in with the Dapper desktop.

[Bug 35112] Re: MP3 track times are incorrect

Latest version of SJ as of today. MP3 profile line:

audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc quality=0 vbr=4
vbr-quality=2 ! id3mux

Result: Tags are actually correct, but track times are not. They may actually
be worse: an 8:00 song reported as 53:57. The whole CD rip is similarly
screwed. Am I using the correct audio profile line above?

[Bug 35229] Totem 1.4.0: Crash on startup (workaround inside)

[Bug 35229] Totem 1.4.0: Crash on startup (workaround inside)

2006-03-16 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35229

Affects: totem totem-xine (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I discovered the following bug today: When starting totem, I receive a
crash that looks like the following:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 65 error_code 1 request_code 141 minor_code 13)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I have an i915 on-board video. If I open Totem by _clicking on a movie
or song_, Totem works just dandy. At home, Totem opens, but the logo in
the video window peels into place (from top to bottom), a process that
takes about five seconds.

Based on that, I went into /usr/share/totem, and renamed
totem_logo.png to totem_logo.png.old - wouldn't you know it, this
fixes the problem.

Apparently, Totem trying to render .pngs can be problematic.

[Bug 35229] Totem 1.4.0: Crash on startup (workaround inside)

2006-03-16 Thread GonzO
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35229

Comment:
More information on this: I've noticed, on every system I've ever
installed Ubuntu on (about twenty, now), that Totem will VERY RELIABLY
crash whenever it attempts to play any video of sufficient resolution.
I have a couple of really high-definition videos (one is 1024x768, and
one is 1280x1024) that Totem simply cannot run. I can produce this
error just about anywhere. I think (but can't prove) that this has to
do with the amount of available video RAM - the 1280x1024 will crash my
computer here and at home; but the 1024x768 video runs at home (where I
have a 6600GT, instead of an i915 onboard).

The splash screen for totem (the cutboard with the word totem on it)
is currently a 1280x1024 PNG. Based on how slow it is to open this
image (on my home machine - takes about five seconds for the image to
peel into place from the top to the bottom), and based on the fact
that it straight up crashes here, I'm willing to bet that Totem is
trying to open that PNG as a movie, and this creates the reliable crash
I've listed above.

Workaround: Scaling down the image resolution for totem_logo.png (= 720
pixels wide), or removing totem_logo.png altogether both allow Totem to
open as usual.

[Bug 13986] MP3/AAC not offered as encoding formats in Preferences, even with encoders+gstreamer plugins for these installed

2006-03-15 Thread GonzO
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/13986

Comment:
gnome-audio-profiles-properties is the UI for that, what's wrong with
it ?

I'll reply, if he won't.

GAPP is not much of a UI at all, and requires the user to find and type
in some google-for-it text string that appears to make no sense to a
non-coder. Additionally, one has to make a profile for every different
MP3 bitrate (should one wish to change it); this whole profile garbage
really does need to be re-thought.

Goobox does this much better - you select what kind of file you want
(ogg, mp3, wav, flac, whatever) and have sliders for the bitrates. (It
doesn't do VBR stuff in GUI, which sucks, there should be a checkbox for
that, but still, it gets MUCH, MUCH closer to useable than the
horribly failed profile metaphor does).

Basically, I agree and can make arguments for the original poster's
point, which is this: The GUI for encoding filetypes/bitrates (gnome-
audio-profiles-properties) is so terrible that it can be classified as a
huge bug. It's not useable. It took me close to an hour of reading to
even figure out what I needed to activate MP3, and close to another to
figure out what Gstreamer needed to make the MP3's I wanted. All of
this could have been done with about 10 seconds worth of slider
interaciton.

Public bug report changed:

Again, offtopic, but id3mux didn't work. Does this even count as a bug?
I think it should, because the default sound-ripping option for Ubuntu
(sound-juicer) doesn't really make good MP3 rips _at all_, and Dapper is
supposed to be all about polish.

This is not a complaint, I'm just saying. It's bad enough (what with
the pipeline thing, and the no tags thing, and the track-length thing)
that I have actually stopped using Sound-Juicer for the time being
(using GRIP now). Which is a shame, because I really liked SJ enough to
fix the tags myself, but the track time thing is kind of a showstopper
for me.

[Bug 31554] Mounted hard drives no longer show in Places or Tree view

Comment:
Well, I'll be.

I've ticked every entry in Conf. Manager-/system/storage, and rebooted
the machine since I did so. Everything is working absolutely flawlessly
now.

I think this can be re-classified from this doesn't work to the
default gconf settings don't make sense.

I guess it would seem so. Thanks for un-marking it and taking the time
to investigate further. Sorry to have kicked off such a fuss.

[Bug 31554] Mounted hard drives no longer show in Places or Tree view

2006-02-16 Thread GonzO
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31554

Comment:
Sebastien: I respectfully disagree with this being marked as a duplicate
of bug #28991. I read #28991 before I submitted this: that one deal
with hotpluggable and network drives (i.e., hotpluggable drives NOT in
the /etc/fstab); I'm talking about local drives that are in the fstab.

Also: Changing the gconf keys
(/apps/nautilus/desktop/network_icon_visible and
/apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible) do NOT fix the problem, like
they do in bug #28991.

Please take the duplicate status off; its really not accurate.

[Bug 31554] Mounted hard drives no longer show in Places or Tree view

2006-02-15 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31554

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I have my hard drives mounted in /etc/fstab. They are mounted to
/media/sda1, /media/sda2, and /media/sda3.

In Breezy, icons for each showed up in the nautilus Tree view, and in
Places. In Dapper, they do not show in either spot, although browsing
to /media/sdaX will allow me to deal with those partitions/drives.

My concern is that new or unfamiliar users won't know that their
windows/other drives/partitions are mounted without these visible
indications.
