[Bug 1755174] [NEW] rhythmbox ignores proxy settings
Public bug reported: Hi, I just tested the upcoming 18.04 release from a network behind a web proxy without direct internet access. Although I have set the proxy in the desktop settings and other programs (e.g. this bug report) honor and use the proxy, rhythmbox complains that there is no network and seems to completely ignore proxy settings. regards ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04 Package: rhythmbox 3.4.2-1ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.15.0-10.11-generic 4.15.3 Uname: Linux 4.15.0-10-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.8-0ubuntu10 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Mon Mar 12 13:22:46 2018 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-03-05 (7 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Alpha amd64 (20180305) ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm-256color PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: rhythmbox UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) XorgLog: Error: [Errno 2] Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden: '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug bionic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1755174 Title: rhythmbox ignores proxy settings To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/1755174/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1724810] Re: 17.10/wayland causing flashes in virtualbox
This does definitely not "remove the problem" here. As said before, installing all guest additions makes the ubuntu guest run X11 instead of wayland, it then just looks as if the problem had gone. This might help in terms of usability, but not if you want to use and test wayland (e.g. to prepare for 18.04) . -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1724810 Title: 17.10/wayland causing flashes in virtualbox To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1724810/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1726847] [NEW] gdm3 package blocking while updating
Public bug reported: Hi, I just tried to install 17.10 with the regular ubuntu desktop image, and ran into the problem that the desktop freezes right after entering the password at login (see #1726842 ). I then went into the recovery root session at the console and did an apt-get upgrade, which pulled in a new gdm3 package. However, installation of the package was hanging, since it tried to restart gdm3 (after issuing some error message that it can't detect the running state). I had to abort with Ctrl-C. A package should never block the installation procedure, especially not in recovery mode. ** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm3 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1726847 Title: gdm3 package blocking while updating To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1726847/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1701875] [NEW] systemd crashing swap partitions
Public bug reported: Hi, systemd still kills the swap device sometimes. I typically avoid lvm and prefer the partition scheme like /dev/sda1 unencrypted boot /dev/sda2 luks-encrypted swap /dev/sda3 luks-encrypted /root and haven an /etc/crypttab like sda2_crypt UUID=a5b1de14-00e7-46a2-a18a-118af13d0ea7 none luks, swap, discard sda3_crypt UUID=9ec0971c-605f-4045-a8e4-57f15c933441 none luks, discard Since using systemd it sometimes happens that the system does not boot anymore. Analysis shows that for some reason the swap partition (the raw partition before encryption) contains just rubbish, and since systemd insists on getting this swap device for dependencies and thus never fulfills it's dependencies. I have no idea what happens insided that damned systemd, since I did not found any debugging method to see what systemd does. If /etc/crypttab contains a swap tag, systemd tries to run mkswap and something goes wrong every now and then (not always, most of the time it works as expected). My current guess is that there is some race condition between the normal mount and recreating the swap, and it looks as if systemd has dependencies twice, for the device name (sda2 and sda2_crypt) and the UUID, maybe two processes are spawned instead of one and interfere. However, it makes systems unstable and unreliable. regards ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: systemd 229-4ubuntu17 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-66.87-generic 4.4.44 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-66-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: zfs zunicode zcommon znvpair zavl ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.6 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Sun Jul 2 09:06:42 2017 MachineType: Medion G24 ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.4.0-66-generic root=UUID=4638a5a1-629c-477c-b1df-b370d0181be5 ro rootflags=subvol=@ splash quiet SourcePackage: systemd SystemdDelta: [EXTENDED] /lib/systemd/system/systemd-timesyncd.service → /lib/systemd/system/systemd-timesyncd.service.d/disable-with-time-daemon.conf [EXTENDED] /lib/systemd/system/rc-local.service → /lib/systemd/system/rc-local.service.d/debian.conf 2 overridden configuration files found. [Bug 1681832] [NEW] Wrong /dev/hwrng for non-existing generator
Public bug reported: Hi, just ran into a problem: I have some software dealing with openssl and some crypto stuff. I recently extended it to read bytes from /dev/hwrng if it exists, because the software should run on a Raspberry Pi as well. The Raspi does not have a clock and usually no user input, thus lack of randomness, but a hardware random number generator, so it is necessary to use /dev/hwrng if it exists. But now the software aborts on regular (intel) PCs, since my regular Ubuntu PCs get a /dev/hwrng entry as well, which just throws a „no such device“ error when trying to read. For some strange reason there is this device entry even if the device is not present, causing trouble. /dev/hwrng should exist only if there is really some hardware generator. [Bug 1676820] [NEW] systemd-resolved giving false negatives
Public bug reported: Hi, I was just debugging why so many of my virtual machines have so much trouble in getting DNS responses and found, that the dnsmasq on the host machine, which is the DNS resolver for all machines asks the three (!) name servers given in /etc/resolv.conf, which is the regular two DNS resolvers from the LAN and 127.0.0.53 where systemd-resolved is running. So every time dnsmasq is asking this systemd-resolved (in about one in three queries) it happens often, not always, that systemd-resolved is giving false negatives. I currently do not see why systemd should bring it's own DNS resolver at all, and even worse, force that into /etc/resolv.conf, causing lots of trouble with false replies. That's just another chapter of the intrusive natur of systemd. What the hell should such a third nameserver be good for? [Bug 1668906] [NEW] systemd occasionally hangs forever while booting: A start job is running for ...
Public bug reported: Hi, on several of my machines (encrypted, 16.04 and 16.10) it *sometimes* happens, that systemd is stuck in booting telling "A start job is running for dev-mapp...ypt.device (5min 40s / no limit)" (endless loop, counting the time up) (only) rebooting helps, but that's annoying and keeps machines from automated booting. Additional problem one: That damned systemd shortens the output to the terminal line length and instead of telling the device name to give a hint where the problems come from it just says dev-mapp...ypt.device Additional problem two: I've activated systemd's debug shell on Terminal 9 in order to debug the problem, but the debug shell is rendered useless by systemd, since it blasts it's messages about the problem to tty9 as well, thus making it impossible to work there. Additional problem three: These device entries seem to be generated dynamically from fstab/crypttab and not exist as files, so it is not even visible, what's the contents of these tasks. Additional problem four: I did not find a description of a debugging procedure. So I do not even see how to debug that weird mess. Maybe that's why you don't understand the bug. [Bug 1008068] [NEW] Gnome program not running under XFCE since 12.04
Public bug reported: This is a renewal of bug #994240 . Since upgrade to ubuntu 12.04 one of the gnome support functions of XFCE is broken, i.e. nautilus -n does not work anymore. However, bug #994240 is constantly closed by a guy named Sebastien Bacher who ignorantly insists on that this is not a bug but the inability to use XFCE. On the other side, the ubuntu guys replied to the question #196103, that this is a bug. So I cannot open a bug report, because the launchpad people claim it is not a bug, and I cannot ask a question because the answer people claim that it is a bug. After all it turns out to be rather a problem of a denial of service attack driven by Sebastien Bacher against launchpad by closing legitimate bug reports. [Bug 986689] Re: Can't connect to jabber: missing password
I really hate to upload confidential/personal data such as account names into publicly available Bug databases. I've therefore filtered out the names of the other accounts that do not cause any trouble from the log, and replaced the name of the jabber server causing trouble with somejabberserver. I've checked the gnome password repository, there's a correct entry for the password, exactly matching the account name (gabble/jabber/hadmut_40jabber_2esomejabberserver_2ede0 in this case) However, while debugging I've found incidently another bug, which did not cause this particular problem: telepathy-* tries to check certicates in $HOME/.config/telepathy/certs , but /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.telepathy lacks an entry for this directory, the kernel therefore denies reading those certificates. If you do not see the problem immediately, I'd propose to postpone this bug for a week, since Ubuntu 12.04 is expected to be published this week and I will upgrade at least two machines and see whether the bug still exists and whether it exists on this particular machine only regards ** Attachment added: Mission Control Log https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/986689/+attachment/3099819/+files/mc1.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986689 Title: Can't connect to jabber: missing password To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/986689/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 900324] Faulty/useless apparmor profile
Jamie, Am 07.12.2011 um 15:31 schrieb Jamie Strandboge: Hadmut, we have been through this before-- Yes. And I would highly appreciate if you'd remember that last time I finally won because of the better arguments. You could save your and my valuable time if you wouldn't start the same discussion over and over again, and recall previous results and improvements instead. Ubuntu is a general purpose distribution and we cannot deny access to all files in the manner you keep suggesting because people will just turn off apparmor altogether And you're repeating the same mistake again and again. As usual you totally missed the point and closed the bug before you understood it. I don't ask you to make apparmor config more tight. I totally agree with you that it should remain in a state where it works for the non-experts. I ask you to split it in two parts. The part that does not need user configuration (i.e. to read /usr/lib and such things needed to get the software up and running), and the other part that opens multimedia files at runtime, because that's the part that security-aware users might modify to match their individual needs. BTW., that's exactly the reason why I put both bug reports into one, because I hoped it would help understanding why there is need to split that in two separate files. On one hand, the parts depending on the operating system (like /udev, /usr/lib,...) which is the same on all machines, should not be modified manually because once modified the debian/ubuntu package system refuses (or at least has problems) to upgrade files in /etc/... So there's no clean and smooth way to configure security to local needs without beeing cut from updates and bug fixes (like the one with the /udev thing). But if you were splitting that in a general part and a separate part describing the run time access rules (like $HOME/** ), one could configure the latter without touching the former and thus still get all updates with new packages. The last time when we had the same problem with a different package, it was a lot of hard work and took me a heap of ugly swear words to convince the ubuntu crew. Why is that so difficult to understand and why do I have to explain that from scratch again and again? Why is it that difficult to understand that I do not ask you to make ubuntu more tight, but to split the configuration into two parts to allow users to make it more tight if they want without breaking the package updates? Why the hell do you force people to break updates if they want more than just zero security? [Bug 900324] [NEW] Faulty/useless apparmor profile
Public bug reported: Hi, evince comes with apparmor profiles. 1) The profiles are incomplete/outdated. The idea of apparmor is to restrict particular access, not to open everything to make it run like without an apparmor profile. BTW, the file design is poor. [Bug 886936] [NEW] /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0 empty
Public bug reported: Hi, I am desperately trying to get an external commercial Linux program (Bibble5) run under Oneiric, which was still working under Natty. One of the problems is that the program tries to find the 32 bit libraries under /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0, which is effectively empty. The machine therefore links against the 64 bit versions, which results in a crash. Interestingly, dpkg shows % dpkg -S /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0 libgtk2.0-0:i386: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0 a package called libgtk2.0-0:i386 Does dpkg now support packages of different architectures? [Bug 884764] Re: gnome-screensaver locks screen even if it shouldn't
What a mess is that? Some tools use gconf, some use gsettings, some use dconf . This is even more confusing than MSWindows. And then the tools are hidden somewhere else where you don't find them. Thanks, that was working. I am currently more than confused, since I tried unity, which was not working due to heaps of bugs, then moved to ubuntu classics, which also changes many things in a non-intuitive way. [Bug 554062] [NEW] f-spot imports picture files incompletely
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: f-spot Hi, when I use F-Spot to copy files (Nikon D300s RAW files) from memory cards to my computers (problems seen on two different machines, desktop and netbook), three different problems occur not always, but quite often: * picture file copied incompletely (loss of data) * picture file copied again every time the card is inserted (does not recognize that the file already exists) * F-Spot reports that it can't access the file I guess that - like Network Manager and other broken-by-design tools - make too much use of the desktop mechanisms, and that they are not stable. I do not think that it is a good idea to have such a buggy and unreliable tool as the default picture processor under ubuntu. [Bug 431261] [NEW] gnome-thumbnail-font couldn't process file: Reason: Took too much time to process.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Hi, when trying to view directories with TTF font files (e.g. /usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont), my nautilus shows a correct thumbnail only for two or three of these fonts and just the standard symbol for all other fonts, without obvious reason. Things get more obvious if I try to view the same directory with a thunar started from command line, since this issues visible error messages: gnome-thumbnail-font couldn't process file: 'file:///usr/share/fonts/truetype/dustin/Dustismo.ttf' Reason: Took too much time to process. [Bug 431267] [NEW] The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog only
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Hi, when viewing font file directories with thunar (e.g. /usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont) and mouseklicking a ttf file, a window opens and shows font samples. Unfortunately the examples contain only 0-9, a-z, A-Z and .:,;(*!?) and are restricted to american/ASCII charsets only. But when living somewhere outside the USA (and there really exists something outside) other characters of local charsets become relevant like german öäüÖÄÜß, and it is important to see whether a given font contains these (or any other) characters. Propopals: * use a locale specific text example * allow to configure the text example in gconf * allow to enter arbitrary text in a text field to be rendered. regards ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog only https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/431267 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
