[Bug 1767454]
Git commit 55eb68ff63646050311f8b689752ad500246c916 by Harald Sitter. Committed on 07/12/2018 at 12:55. Pushed by sitter into branch 'master'. fallback to dnssd service discovery if smb listDir failed on root Summary: This elevates a problem with newer SMB protocol versions and smbclient not supporting discovery/browsing. when not using older (as in: ancient) protocol versions discovery doesn't work and smb:/ gives no results. By falling back to DNSSD based discovery we can ensure discovery of DNSSD remotes (namely linux and osx) is always working. Windows unfortunately does not support DNSSD and as such will not benefit from this mode of discovery and continue to be unlisted when using a protocol version without browsing support. CHANGELOG: When SMB Discovery is not working (protocol > SMB1) host discovery will now fall back to DNS-SD/Avahi/Bonjour. [Bug 735166] Re: Duplicate System Settings System Monitor in Gnome/Unity
Kubuntu maintains a very upstream friendly policy. Meaning if the systemsettings upstream maintainer is not cool with either of the changes proposed then they simply won't happen. At any rate, from what I understand this is an issue created by a renaming of the gnome-control-center, which makes this very much an issue of GNOME and not the KDE workspace. From a KDE POV nothing changed, except that another source distributor decided it would be a good idea to use a well established and long standing name for their product without taking into account the resulting problems for the eco system at large. So as an upstream developer I see no reason for action on the KDE side of things but rather on the GNOME side. FWIW the onlyshowin: kde option is fundamentally wrong because, as you already pointed out, it would remove all ability to configure KDE technology wide settings in a shell (you could run unity in an KDE software environment) that is not a KDE one. Now the reason this works for GNOME is because their entries are regular desktop files in the applications folder, thus listed in the menu. So even without gnome- control-center you could access the configuration apps for example via the Plasma start menu. KCMs on the other hand are in a KDE own folder and thus require systemsettings to be present. Renaming System Settings to have some sort of prefix because GNOME wants to claim this name is, I hope, obviously wrong on so incredibly many levels that I'd not even want to start think about discussing that upstream, downstream, or sidestream. Anyhow, this is not an issue limited to Kubuntu, so as per our bug triage policy [1] it needs to be tacked and addressed upstream. Also since the established importance is low there is no reason for tracking it here. [Bug 708508] Re: Debug Setting Broken in C++
Incidentally the original issue of Amarok not starting due to fatal assert should not be a problem in natty final as asserts are not fatal in Ubuntu releases I understand. However, the underlying bug prevents debug output when using gstreamer in a C++ application. This for example renders us unable to produce gstreamer debug output with Phonon, which is a major PITA for upstream. ** Changed in: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu Natty) Status: New = In Progress ** Changed in: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu Natty) Assignee: (unassigned) = Harald Sitter (apachelogger) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gstreamer0.10 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/708508 Title: Debug Setting Broken in C++ -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 429579] Re: all (audio)players should have the same preset sound volume
Well, honestly I think this is a rather poinless change for 3 reasons: a) Different decodes possibly can lead to different volumes (say you use Amarok and VLC, they use different libraries to decode the media files, so 100% might not be what VLC considers 100%). b) I am no HCI specialist, but my assumption is that a regular user (that is someone who might not even know that app volume != system volume) will almost always try to change the volume in the app itself. There they got some icon and a slider indicating that volume can be manipulated here, which makes me believe that they will almost always opt for this way of changing the volume. c) As you pointed out already. Different files have different levels, so without global replaygain the proposal does not make sense. c is especially important, because everything stands and falls with this fact. [Bug 236602] Re: No applications available for photo editing if Gnome is not installed
Woohoo, the magics of standards. @Jonathan: That would not change anything because that only updates the ksycoca but not freedesktop stuff (because by spec the installing application is supposed to do that stuff, not the desktop's implementation of the freedesktop standards), fspot being a mono/gtk+ app, doesn't care about ksycoca though ;-) @Milan: The fact that GNOME uses it, doesn't mean that update-desktop- database is a standard, which to my knowledge it is not. It is a freedesktop.org software project, but no more and no less than that. Calling it a standard is like saying Tango is a standard, which would make GNOME not comply with the standard. Anyway. Lets recap. * The freedesktop specifications/standards for desktop files (which list associated mimetypes) and for shared-mime (which lists mimetypes that can be used by desktop files) do not define update-desktop-database as standard of any kind, neither do they reference desktop-files-utils * The freedesktop shared-mime spec however, lists update-mime-database as tool of choice for updating the possible mimetypes (which should be working just fine, because that is implemented in KDE) * The linking of application=mimetype is, just like managing the list of applications, up to the desktop's specific implementation (as suggested in the desktop-entry-spec) * fspot either does not use GNOME's builtin parser, or GNOME in fact uses update-desktop-database as default parser. So, either fspot needs to depend on desktop-file-utils or the GNOME library that is responsible for reading the data provided by update-desktop-database needs to depend on desktop-file-utils. ** Changed in: kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- No applications available for photo editing if Gnome is not installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236602 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to f-spot in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 236602] Re: No applications available for photo editing if Gnome is not installed
All very confusing and certainly requires investigation. First of all I cannot imagine that KDE got a quite well working component to implement the desktop-enty-spec (namely kbuildsycoca4) and GNOME depends on update-desktop-database only. The mentioned spec does not even enforce a policy were every package that comes with a destkop file needs to invoke said command. So, considering a 3rd party developer deploys an application with desktop file and doesn't know that he should call update-desktop-database (Since it is not mentioned in the spec) GNOME would never know about his application. Comparing that to the automated scans of kbuildsycoca4 (to find new desktop files) and its inode notification registration (to get notified about updated desktop files) makes GNOME appear in a rather bad light TBH. So, someone who knows his way through GNOME would be very welcome to explain if this is really the way GNOME does things. Anyway, as for the fix for GNOME applications. No, we should not open bugs against gimp and friends. Because: Technically the desktop-entry-spec suggest a two way communication module. First you have the parsing component that interacts with the desktop files and the mime cache to build a list of applications etc. and on the other side you have the output component that provides the necessary information to the application. Assuming that no one would be developing GNOME applications if they had to implement the output component into every application rather than one libary (update-desktop-database creates just the database, but still somehow this database needs to be accessed and processed so that its information can be used within the actual application), there must be some GNOME library that handles the interaction with the application. And this library should depend on desktop-file-utils. Because what use does the library have if you don't have a database it can read from? ... clearly a case of Dependency ;-) That is however only an assumption. -- No applications available for photo editing if Gnome is not installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236602 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to f-spot in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 236602] Re: No applications available for photo editing if Gnome is not installed
KDE does detect it and any KDE app would be able to access this data, so if fspot was a KDE application all this would work perfectly fine. But since fspot is a GNOME app it apparently relies on GIO to read the desktop-file database, which is not present, because KDE doesn't create or update that file since it is not even mentioned in any fd.o spec. You have to get a different point of view on the issue: it's not about a GNOME app in KDE, it is about a GNOME app in an environment without desktop-file-utils, competely unrelated to KDE. -- No applications available for photo editing if Gnome is not installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236602 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to f-spot in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 330419] Re: GNOME+Kwin: desktops aren't drawn
Hey, I just did some research on this. First of all, the GNOME pager-like applet, which shows the virtual desktops, only offers the option to add new workspaces when using metacity (possibly also with compiz ... wether or not that is a sensible thing or not, since I would expect that it is possible to get information about the amount of virtual desktops directly from the WM, and also to be able to influence the amount [dbus?]...). So, setting the amount of desktops only works form within the appropriate KDE control module. The actual rendering issue is however in GNOME, and not KWin. Scenario 1: metacity is default, gets replaced by kwin = shown desktops follow the setting defined in KDE (i.e. the amount KWin actually exposes) and get rendered properly, adding them on-the-fly (via the appropriate KCM) works as expected Scenario 2: kwin is default (e.g. through WINDOW_MANAGER environmental variabe) = shown desktops follow the setting defined in KDE but anything but the first desktop is not rendered at all Scenario 3: kwin is default, gets replaced by metacity, gets replaced by kwin = see Scenario 1 This leads me to the conclusion that probably GNOME either expects KWin something to do, in order to render the desktops (which would be weird, since GNOME obviously knows about the virtual desktops AKA workspaces, so not having them rendered is everything but sensible) or there is just some flaw within GNOME that prevents the desktops from rendering. Workaround: invoke metacity and then replace it with kwin (something like gnome-wm kwin --replace as start command) I am bouncing this bug to gnome-session, hoping it is the appropriate package :) Have a nice day, and thanks for the report. ** Package changed: kdebase-workspace (Ubuntu) = gnome-session (Ubuntu) -- GNOME+Kwin: desktops aren't drawn https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/330419 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[1] According to the Xubuntu people XFCE is going to implement the menu spec in upcoming version 4.6, so I guess having all 3 major desktops is a perfect reason to completely follow the specification's suggestion. That said. GNOME should use gnome-applications.menu and set the $XDG_MENU_PREFIX environment variable to gnome- in the script/application responsible for launching GNOME/creating the GNOME menu tree.
