[Bug 680040] [NEW] rhythmbox freezes the system on song change when the lid is closed

2010-11-22 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox freezes my Thinkpad T43p on song change when the lid is closed
(set to blank the screen instead of suspending).

This happens both in AC mode and in battery mode.
This happens with or without the ubuntu indicator applet.

another TTY or use the magic sysrq{s,u,b] keys.

[Bug 581303] Re: Home directory won't be decrypted if user password isn't asked

2010-09-28 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Seeing this in Maverick too. The attached screenshot shows that you simply need
1- to have an encrypted home directory (done at install time)
2- to check the Don't ask for password on login option in the user settings

Symptoms are as described above; ICE Authority errors, Nautilus not
having permissions to launch, etc.

Strangely enough, if you switch to a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+F1) and
do a sudo service gdm restart and then click your username, it logins
properly and decrypts the home directory, allowing GNOME to read your
prefs etc. So it seems this happens only on the first login attempt,
subsequent logins work.

[Bug 523299] Re: Lucid session idle timeout is too short

2010-07-20 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I'm thinking enterprise setting/coffee break scenario here. 5-10 minutes
is reasonable, 30 minutes is an insanely long amount of time to leave a
work computer unattended and wide open to any passerby to fiddle with.
The default setting should be closer to a secure setting. Users who
don't need security (ie: home users) can disable automatic screen
locking or prolong the timeout.

This is similar in spirit to a no open ports/insecure services default
policy, or a default policy of asking a password to log-in (ubuntu does
offer you the option to autologin though).

2010-04-05 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I keep getting this to this day. Here's a screenshot of how it looks
like. It really looks as if openssh client itself was interfering with
gvfs or something.

To reproduce:
1. Use nautilus to connect to a password-based SSH server, such as
sftp://u...@server
2. When prompted if you want to remember the password, select only for this
session
3. Move around. As soon as you change folders, this intrusive and modal openssh
dialog will show up.

[Bug 327872] Re: Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2010-02-18 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
The title and description of this bug is, from what I can tell, wrong.
AVCHD is *not* MPEG-2 TS, and certainly not HDV. Take a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD ; it's all H.264 AVC there.

Thus the current bug report should be about MPEG-2 Transport Stream
camcorders, because actual *AVCHD* camcorders (at least mine, which does
H.264 in a .mov container) do not cause any problems and work fine with
PiTiVi.

[Bug 423694] Re: session active, not inhibited, screen idle message

2010-01-20 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Chris, any progress or further upstream discussions on finding what
causes this?

I'm still experiencing issues with my netbook randomly not being able to
go idle (and thus, no screen dimming, dpms off, or auto suspend...). I
couldn't pinpoint the cause, it usually works the first few times after
a fresh login. AFAIK the totem, hamster and eog bugs that prevented
idling have been patched.

On rare occasions I see the weird little icon in the notification area,
but it immediately disappears, I've never been able to mouse over it to
see what it said.

It seems to happen only on my netbook, which obviously has a lid and
suspends/resumes quite often. AFAICT my desktop doesn't forget to
idle.

I wish I could be more of help and get this damn idling+power
saving+inhibition crap working just like it used to in time for the
next ubuntu LTS release, which will be installed on many computers I
maintain... but I just don't know how to troubleshoot this clusterbug
anymore, I'm lost.

If there's some kind of automated test suite I can run, or a detailed
step by step investigation guide for this, I'd be interested.

[Bug 479630] Re: cannot use a SOCKS proxy in karmic with most applications

2009-11-14 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Yes, it is consistently reproducible. To do this:

1. have a machine that will be used as the SSH host in which you will tunnel
into
2. SSH into it, by running this in a terminal: ssh -v -N -D 8000
the-remote-host, keep the terminal open
3. go in gnome's proxy settings (gnome-network-properties)
4. set the mode to manual proxy configuration
5. set the socks host to localhost, port 8000 (leave the other proxy types
blank)
6. make the terminal (the one with the ssh tunnel running in it) show always
on top so you can see its activity at all times
7. use epiphany, evolution, empathy, to visit websites or connect to accounts.
Notice that nothing happens in the terminal.
8. use chromium-browser, firefox, pidgin to do the same: notice that activity
shows up in the terminal where SSH is running (new channels are opened,
etc.), indicating that those apps indeed use the socks proxy

So actually it's not that the gnome proxy is broken, but that evolution,
empathy and epiphany (which used to work) don't support it.

[Bug 479630] [NEW] cannot use a SOCKS proxy in karmic with most applications

2009-11-09 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Starting a SOCKS proxy with a command such as

ssh -v -N -D 8000 the-remote-host

And setting gnome-network-properties (the proxy thing) to connect to the
SOCKS proxy on port 8000, all the apps seem to ignore it completely. I
tested with Evolution, Epiphany and Empathy.

The only app that doesn't ignore it (because I see activity in the
terminal) is chromium-browser.

How can I troubleshoot this properly?

Oh yes, I forgot to mention: this used to work fine in Ubuntu 8.10 with
Epiphany, Pidgin, etc. Evolution didn't take the proxy into account, but
that was probably because of

Re: [Bug 410407] Re: [READ DESCRIPTION] Flash is not recognizing mouse clicks in multiple situations

2009-11-08 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam

an update of Chrome has just
 fixed this issue for me.
 [...]

I'd instead like to ask if
the latest update fixes this for anyone else on chromium and compiz.

Indeed, I am subscribed to the upstream bug reports, and chromium issue
#25288 was marked as fixed in SVN revision #31297 two days ago.

Today's daily PPA updates are chromium SVN revision 31403, so it's quite
possible this was fixed. So far, so good (according to my minimal
testing on Youtube).

Re: [Bug 448438] Re: idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-11-01 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
After further testing, I was able to determine that this is not
architecture/package-specific either. Creating a blank account account
on this computer, I can see that only my main account is affected, so it
must be the usual broken/corrupt configuration problem.

The problem is that I have no idea where to look. I have tried resetting
gnome-power-manager's gconf values, removing various folders in
~/.config, ~/.gnome2/, ~/.local/share/, etc. Advice on what to look
at/attempt would be welcome!

Re: [Bug 448438] Re: idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-10-31 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
In the hope that it can help as per previous comment, here are some
steps for reproducing:

- in gnome-power-preferences, set the screen to blank after 1 minute of
inactivity
- (optional?): in gnome-screensaver-preferences, set the session to go
idle/screensaver to activate at 1 minute

Now, logout and login (to make sure you have a clean session). Then:
1. do nothing for 2 minutes. The screen should blank. If you have
empathy running, the status should become Away
2. move the mouse or type something, the session becomes active again
3. to break this normal cycle, open any image (with the default image
viewer, eog), go in fullscreen (F11) or slideshow mode (F5), the message
'Method InhibitActivation with signature s on interface
org.gnome.ScreenSaver doesn't exist' will be printed in the terminal
if you ran it from a terminal.**
4. close eog*
5. wait as long as you want, the session will not go idle.

*: step 3 can (at the time I am writing this) be tested also by playing
any movie with totem, then exiting totem
**: for some reason, this happens on my generic desktop machine, but not
on my lpia netbook.

Yes, along with gnome-session and gnome-power-manager.

I did some further testing, and indeed, eog causes the same kinds of
problems as totem did: if you use fullscreen once, you won't have
working session idling (ie: eog doesn't uninhibit, it seems) until you
logout.

[Bug 448438] Re: idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-10-17 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Upstream replied that they fixed the warnings in totem, and that they couldn't
reproduce the problem, but I can see how the original warning might happen.
Most likely, gnome-screensaver crashed, or was killed, and the gnome-session
inhibition didn't notice. gnome-screensaver is supposed to proxy to
gnome-session, and it should be transparent to users.

Bastien finished by: File a bug against gnome-screensaver if you still
see the problem.

Now the question is whether we will still be affected now that a fix for
the warnings has been committed in totem, or if gnome-screensaver is
still problematic, or something.

Luis, could you help doing some additional testing on this? I'm not sure
how to proceed myself.

Re: [Bug 325973] Re: gnome-session keeps respawning nautilus when no desktop is drawed

2009-10-13 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam

could the users who get the issue give details on the reason why they
 turn off the background display?

To have a clean background (more detailed justification on
http://open-source.ecchi.ca/?voir=articles/killing_the_desktop )

the new nautilus version used in karmic
has a gconf key to not exit in such case, it would make sense to use
that if users are trying to get a clean background

Would work in my personal case, according to your description... I that,
according to replies from other users in this thread, I'm not alone in
this use case, but there are some more fancy approaches.

But then it seems this has already been patched by the time I'm writing
this, so I'll just wait for the package updates.

[Bug 448438] [NEW] idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-10-10 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ok, this is really weird. I know that gnome-power-manager's inhibition
features have been migrated over to be handled by gnome-session, and the
g-p-m features for that were deprecated in gnome 2.28.

What I'm seeing here is that
- totem does seem to inhibit the screensaver (contrary to what other bug
reports say), however:
- it sometimes forgets to release the inhibition. If you run it with --debug,
you can see errors such as this one:

j...@kusanagi:~$ totem --debug Vidéos/8-bit\ trip.mp4

(totem:4604): GLib-WARNING **: GError set over the top of a previous GError or
uninitialized memory.
This indicates a bug in someone's code. You must ensure an error is NULL before
it's set.
The overwriting error message was: Method AllowActivation with signature
on interface org.gnome.ScreenSaver doesn't exist

** (totem:4604): WARNING **: Problem inhibiting the screensaver: Method
UnInhibit with signature u on interface org.gnome.ScreenSaver
doesn't exist

Now, I'm not sure exactly why, the inhibition sometimes seems to work,
sometimes not. When it doesn't work,
- the screen will not blank anymore, the session will not go idle (and will not
lock)
- if you attempt to log out of gnome, you will get a warning about totem
(sometimes, multiple instances of totem!) being busy and inhibiting (while
totem has only a single instance, and it is long gone).

I hope I'm clear enough and that this info is helpful. One thing that is
certainly crucial to get right for Ubuntu 9.10 final is session
inhibition, especially when dealing with the default video player.

[Bug 325973] Re: gnome-session keeps respawning nautilus when no desktop is drawed

2009-10-09 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I have a few questions:
- this was patched in Ubuntu 9.04, any reason (other than time/manpower) why
this isn't the case for 9.10 anymore?
- is it harmful in any way to chmod 444
/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop?

This is pretty much the only issue I've had with Ubuntu 9.10 so far that
is severe, if I did not have a core2quad, I would probably not have
survived to ask about this :)

[Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons, system menu

2009-10-07 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Ok, this is going nowhere. We have a bunch of me too's but that's never going
to change their mind or give them a realistic sample of the gnome users'
opinions. Quoting André Klapper's (condescending) comment upstream:
'Feel free to ask them, e.g. run a poll somewhere where probably 0.01% of
 the GNOME users will comment.'

Now, instead of wasting time here, should we not indeed be looking at
how to run such a poll and ensuring that we have 1) a large enough
statistical sample 2) representative enough of the GNOME population ?
Where and how could this be done in a (semi?) official manner?

On the other hand, I have a vague pessimistic feeling that even if we do
that and have a statistically sound poll to present to them, if the
empirical results go against their hypothesis, they will dismiss them
by saying that the study was flawed, that the results are not
representative, and that we are a bunch of clueless non-designers, etc.

Anyway. At this point, I don't really *care* who wins anymore. I just
thought I'd mention this possibility, and that it would be an
interesting social experiment to actually run such a poll on a large and
representative sample (now, go figure out how to do that.

[Bug 417491] Re: Rhythmbox fails to stop suspend process in karmic

Upstream gnome has a patch for this, but they seem unsure about applying

patch to the ubuntu packages, so that there are no bad surprises when

[Bug 414215] [NEW] cannot set the microphone to use the internal microphone on a Dell Mini 9 in karmic

2009-08-15 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

I have a Mini 9 running Ubuntu 9.10. It has a microphone jack on the
side and an internal built-in microphone.

The default setup of Karmic alpha 4, with the new gnome-volume-control
2.28, does not allow setting which one of the two inputs I want to use.
It only sees one (which turns out to be the microphone jack).
Furthermore, the input level: meter doesn't preview the sound
correctly when a microphone is plugged into that jack, although it
should (because gnome-sound-recorder seems to record fine from it, with
its vumeter also showing up the input sound correctly).

[Bug 414215] Re: cannot set the microphone to use the internal microphone on a Dell Mini 9 in karmic

2009-08-15 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
As you can see in the alsamixer window, there are two inputs. Only one
is shown in the sound prefs.

[Bug 414240] [NEW] cannot create a multihead setup with gnome-display-properties and intel card when using an openGL window manager (such as compiz and mutter)

2009-08-15 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

This is something that has been annoying me for quite a while now. I'm
not sure whose fault it is: X, the open source intel drivers (I have an
i915 on a Dell Mini 9), randr, gnome-settings-daemon or gnome-display-
properties.

If I have either Compiz or Mutter instead of Metacity, trying to use gnome's
display properties app to create an extended desktop (or simply hitting the
autodetect monitors button) will result in a borked up screen that doesn't
show anything.
It works fine with plain metacity.

Don't quite know where/what to look for. I searched gnome's bugzilla and
launchpad, but couldn't exactly find this problem reported.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-21 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I hope you guys are not serious about inflicting this on your users.

If you want to simplify things, the gnome guys already did it for you
years ago, with spatial nautilus (you know, the default nautilus mode
that Ubuntu specifically patched out to not be the default?), which was
the hallmark of simplicity/minimalism/usability* (and is the default in
Fedora, from what I've seen).

Crippling the browser mode of nautilus (which is for users that can't
stand spatial nautilus' minimalism) will pretty much result in angering
those users, and usability-conscious people just recommending others to
avoid ubuntu desktops because Canonical keeps doing parallel work and
doing away with the principles set forth by gnome (ignoring the
desktop's toolbar label settings? seriously?!).

Unless gnome decides that this is the new canon that should be
implemented on all apps, of course.

Just my warning/2 cents. I don't really care that much on a personal
level, in the grand scheme of things, the people will decide if this is
a good or bad thing, and I can still use spatial nautilus.

[Bug 317225] Re: rhythmbox freezes when opening certain radiostations first

[Bug 71093] Re: Mail forwarded with text attachment doesnt add the file

2009-05-22 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
That should teach me, for sticking to LTS versions :) the bug
disappeared in Evolution 2.24 (and newer, probably). However, those
computers are still sticking to the LTS release with evo 2.22, so I'm
wondering if this bug should be kept open for an eventual fix.

[Bug 71093] Re: Mail forwarded with text attachment doesnt add the file

2009-05-21 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Well, the fact that there is a workaround (well, not really; putting the
whole forwarded message as a monolithic attachment sucks) does not
invalidate this bug. This doesn't happen with other mimetypes such as
.xls, and is downright confusing.

I filed a bug upstream.

[Bug 354909] Re: python 2.6 support - jaunty

2009-04-20 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Hold on a sec, Specto does not call the numpy module directly in its
code, afaik, PyGTK is the one calling it. Shouldn't PyGTK be the package
that gets its dependencies fixed? Surely we can't be the only
application with which this happens?
