I'm afraid my lack of computing skills has let me down again!
I tried to run 10.10 to see if it cured the problem. I put a Linux Format
magazine DVD in my netbook computer, It has a version of 10.10. I found the ISO
image but do not know what to do next!
I tried closing down to
No Worries I'll have a go. I also have the older 9.xx DVD. and other Ubuntu
derivatives that I 'll try to see which work.

I use 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 1 netbook and a Lenovo External USB DVD drive.
It all worked well with the previous version of Ubuntu (9.something). The DVD
works perfectly when I inset one from a Linux magazine.
Now I cannot burn CD's
