[Bug 912454] Re: Blank incoming messages

I just experienced this yesterday.

Can you give the name and location of the logs you need. Dbus is
dmesg.log?

[Bug 912454] Re: Blank incoming messages

2012-03-08 Thread Jim Rorie
Another data point, as the bug I opened appears to a dup of this one.
I'm seeing the same problem under gtalk (lib gabber?) It appears when I
attempt to activate empathy off the messaging menu.

I am currently running Precise Beta, tho.

[Bug 944149] [NEW] Empathy loses IM text when accessed directly from Messaging menu

2012-03-01 Thread Jim Rorie
Public bug reported:

I've noticed this randomly starting in Oneiric and is still present in
Precise. I can receive an IM and see the name and time in the MM. When
I select it, the chat window will appear, but it will be blank.

It seems to be more common with people that I chat with infrequently.
If I select the person from the empathy contact list, it seem to work
fine.

[Bug 478178] Re: Empathy is almost impossible to set as a startup application

2010-12-03 Thread Jim Rorie
you just have to dragndrop empathy (a launcher, or the entry in the
applications menu) to the list of gnome-session-properties. Is it enough for
 you?

If this is the expected procedure, wouldn't a good starting point to be
to add a hint or prompt to let users know this is possible?

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-15 Thread Jim Rorie
Moving everything to the left opens up the space on the right nicely, and
I would like to experiment in 10.10 with some innovative options
 there.

Then the best solution would be to introduce the right/left change when
you have implemented that technology. That way, the user can weigh the
benefits of the new technology and the learning curve. As it stands, it
appears capricious to many without the associated benefit.

[Bug 531556] [NEW] [Lucid] Blank Screen after login

2010-03-03 Thread Jim Rorie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I'm experiencing a blank screen after login under Lucid. I've seen this
since Alpha 1.

The GDM appears to be initialized. I'm using Autologin, so I hear the
desktop login sound. However, the screen is black. I can do a
CTRL+ALT+PrtSCN+K and the system goes back the GDM login. Immediately
after pressing the sequence, the desktop will appear as I would have
expected to show up on boot.

This is an Arrandale GPU, i5, so I know that there is a little
flakeyness in support.

This bug appears like #518201, but there is no actual freeze, just a
blank screen.

[Bug 363911] [NEW] gnome-sound-properties previews sounds it can't play

2009-04-19 Thread Jim Rorie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

This is under Jaunty Beta, AMD64 on a macbook pro 5,1.

It is possible to select a sound under gnome sound properties that the
system cannot play. To demonstrate, create a sound file in your home
directory. Select that file under an event, such as empty trash. The
preview should work and play the file as normal. However, when the
event fires, it will not play.

This can be resolved by creating a link to the file in the
/usr/share/sounds directory and selecting that file instead. My
suspicion is that it is a permissions issue, but I can't for the life of
me figure our how it can play a root file but not a user file.

The result of this is that the user will select a custom file and the
default file will play instead, thus generating a bug report.

[Bug 320259] Re: GDM Context menu needs an option to display on button release

2009-02-13 Thread Jim Rorie
I don't think that anyone was suggesting that it was a bug. It is
simply a usability issue for power users migrating from windows desktop
or operating in dual use environments.People THINK it is a bug
because the effect is so subtle. While a person making a clean break
from Windows would eventually learn the new UI function, the dual use
person is in a fix. They will never be able to be fully efficient on
either desktop. MS has no intention of providing the capability of
allowing the Windows desktop to be modified to be similar to Gnome.
Linux is about choice, therefore, it should be in the charter to allow
customizations that let the user work the way they need to.

The other aspect is that this particular group is exactly the group that
is instrumental in spreading the Linux message.

[Bug 227051] Re: screen saver freezes laptop in Hady Haron

I'm getting something similar on a HP zd8000 with ATI Radeon x300. The
system freezes when the screen saver is active, resulting in a slightly
smeared display. No response from the system, however I can
occasionally get the system to respond by pressing power button and
going to sleep mode and back.

I've noticed some PAM errors in the user.log. (attached) Not sure if
they are relevant, but there appear to be in gnome-screensaver. Also,

[Bug 186390] Re: gnome-power-manager's handling of critically low battery power could be more user-friendly

I don't think this is a feature request. This is a bug. I'm looking at

[Bug 186390] Re: gnome-power-manager's handling of critically low battery power could be more user-friendly

2008-09-25 Thread Jim Rorie
I don't think this is a feature request. This is a bug. I'm looking at
the Gnome Power Manager manual it is not performing as shown.

I looked upstream and am not seeing any requests for logs. There is an
upstream bug identical to this that's over a year old.

I'm not sure the usefulness of the power manager if it can't report the
battery state. What do we need to do to get some movement on this?
