[Bug 536766] Re: Personal file sharing preferences dialog does not offer to install needed packages

2013-08-20 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

What happens - I open the Personal file sharing preferences dialog via
system-preferences or via nautilus, and Im told that the network sharing

I, as a tech user, went to synaptic, found the package, looked for its
recommends and got the functionality.
A normal user wont be able to do so, and so a button to install those
packages is needed for usabilty's sake.

  Desired resolution:

- - Remove the Sharing Options right click menu option from Nautilus.
- - Remove the 'Share' tab from the Nautilus 'Properties' window
+ - Change the Sharing Options text in them Nautilus right click folder menu
to Local network share
+ - Change the 'Share' tab title text in the Nautilus 'Properties' window to
Local network share
  - If a advanced user chooses to install the required packages, the menu
should re-appear in Nautilus.

[Bug 1130722] Re: Change nautilus menu layout in Unity back to the style of 3.4

2013-07-09 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

When fixing this bug, also take a look at bug #1131664 at the same time
  if possible.

In Nautilus 3.6, introduced in raring, the menu layout was changed from the
traditional all-entries-in-one-menubar to:
  * an application menu called Files in the Unity menu bar
  * a view menu has moved to some toolbar buttons and a dropdown under an arrow
in the upper right of a window
  * all other menu items have moved to a cog button dropdown in the upper right
of a window

For Unity, we should probably switch back to the more traditional layout
(and keep the new layout for GNOME). I'll assign an Ayatana task to get
design guidance on what the layout should be.

  Desired resolution:

  - Remove the 'cog' icon from the top right of the Nautilus toolbar.
Move the view and search buttons over to the right, so that the right
most view button occupies the position which previously held the cog
  button.

  - Patch Nautilus to have the following menu layout:

[Bug 1173886] Re: Wrong background colour for nautilus icon in Unity launcher

2013-05-16 Thread John Lea
@hyperair; In Unity 8 we will probably be completely removing
average-icon-colour algorithm and either:
- forcing all applications to pick a specific colour.
- Not having the concept of a Launcher tile background at all, and just
displaying an icon that covers the whole tile. If we take this approach we
would then use shaders on the icon for the launching 'pulse' effect, etc...

Agreed that defining the tile background colour in the .desktop file is
a hackey solution, but not sure what mechanism will be proposed for
Unity 8. However there is a very high probability the average-icon-
colour algorithm will be removed from the next version of Unity.

[Bug 1130722] Re: Change nautilus menu layout in Unity back to the style of 3.4

2013-02-21 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

In Nautilus 3.6, introduced in raring, the menu layout was changed from the
traditional all-entries-in-one-menubar to:
  * an application menu called Files in the Unity menu bar
  * a view menu has moved to some toolbar buttons and a dropdown under an arrow
in the upper right of a window
  * all other menu items have moved to a cog button dropdown in the upper right

For Unity, we should probably switch back to the more traditional layout

design guidance on what the layout should be.

[Bug 882040] Re: should let users enable or disable suspend and hibernate

2012-12-17 Thread John Lea
@eaglescreen, @taaroa; +10 re. the hybrid suspend method  ;-)

Ideally when the user presses the power down button we should both
suspend and hibernate the computer at the same time. If the computer is
then resumed while battery power is remaining, it should be un-suspended
and the hibernate image discarded. If the battery goes below a set
point, the suspend state would be discarded, and when the computer is
next switched on it would then be un-hibernated.

Would anybody be interested in taking this on as a project? It is a lot
of work, but it would be great to see this in Ubuntu. To add this
feature somebody needs to step forward and take on this project. I
proposed this idea at UDS-O in Budapest, however there was nobody
available to take up this project, and that is still the case today.
Any volunteers? ;-)

[Bug 681348] Re: Build show me the desktop mini-app that adds a show desktop button to Launcher

2012-12-11 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

Keyboard shortcut to minimise all windows required.

  Description:

Ubuntu used to have a button on the bottom left corner of the screen
that minimised all windows. This button was equivalent to a button that
used to exist in MS Windows prior to the advent of Vista/Windows 7. In
Unity this button has been removed, however a 'minimise all' function is
still useful to allow users to go directly to their desktop.

  Competitive analysis:

Minimise all windows functionality in other operating systems.

Windows 2000 Windows XP: Button on desktop and Windows Logo+D key
combination
Window 7: Clickable area (difficult to discover) in the bottom-right of the
screen and Windows Logo + D key combination. (compare comments #10-#12)
  OSX: Option-Command-M Key combination only

  Change request:

  - Create a small application that when clicked minimises all windows.
Users who would like a 'minimise all windows' button can then add this
application to their launcher. This app will not be in the Launcher by
  default.

  - It should be possible to drag and drop the 'Show Desktop' icon to
place it into any position in the Launcher

Preferred method of enabling Show Desktop icon in Launcher

  - A user would add the app to the launcher via either installing it from
the software centre or by dragging and dropping it from the dash. It
should be possible to change it's position in the Launcher by dragging
and dropping in the same manner as any other application. This mini-
app can also be run directly from the dash. Note that mini-app *should
  not* be a ccsm option.

Fallback method of enabling Show Desktop icon in Launcher

  - Add checkbox to 'System Settings / Appearance / Behaviour' to enable
  workspaces

- - This should be displayed as:
-
- Reveal sensitivityLow |-High
- --
- Enable workspaces [] Add Show Desktop icon to Launcher []
- --
- Restore Default Behaviours
+ - See attached image behaviour_panel.png for layout details.

To include the Desktop Launcher icon to the launcher you now need to:

  - Edit the gsetting key favorites in com.canonical.Unity.Launcher
  - Add there a favorite named unity://desktop-icon

2012-10-17 Thread John Lea
@mpt; this is a user facing bug that affects user interaction with the
Ubuntu 'platform', and as such this bug should be marked as affecting
ayatana-design (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/FilingBugs ). If you
disagree with this process or with the definition of what Unity covers,
please speak to Ivanka. We will also be discussing our design process
as a group in the next few weeks, this will be the correct forum to
discuss this issue.

Please leave this bug report marked as 'also affects' ayatana-design for
now.

[Bug 732697] Re: Dash - Searching for gwibber in Dash returns two results with the same icon

2012-10-12 Thread John Lea
@seb128; just read this bug, the title said there were two instances of
*gwibber*, not empathy. However the description talked about empathy!

I've updated the bug to consistently mention gwibber, not empathy - this
is still an issue.

** Description changed:

  To Reproduce:

  1. Install Ubuntu, and log in for the first time.
- 2. Go to the Dash App Lens, and type empathy (without quotes).
+ 2. Go to the Dash Home, and type gwibber (without quotes).

  What happens:
- - Two results appear with the same icon underneath the Installed category
header: Empathy Internet Messaging and Messaging and VoIP Accounts.
- - One result also appears underneath the Apps Available for Download
category header Empathy Internet Messaging
+ - Two results appear with the same icon underneath the Apps category
header: Gwibber Social Client and Broadcast Preferences.

- Desired solution:
- - Empathy Internet Messaging should be displayed only once underneath the
Installed category header on a fresh Ubuntu install
- - Messaging and VoIP Accounts should not be displayed at all
+ Desired solution:
+ - Gwibber Social Client should be displayed underneath the Apps category
header on a fresh Ubuntu install
+ - Broadcast Preferences should not be displayed at all

[Bug 969256] Re: Keyboard shortcuts - The HUD keyboard shortcut should be configurable

2012-09-05 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

+ Note: bug reverted to Triaged because when QA testing it was found that
+ while it was possible to set the new shortcut in System
+ SettingsKeyboard, but the HUD was still triggered only by the default
+ shortcut. (see Christian's comment)
+
+ ---
+
By default the HUD keyboard shortcut is ALT. Currently users can
configure this key using ccsm, however this shortcut should also be
configurable using the 'System Settings-Keyboard-Shortcuts' panel.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-09-03 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

  ===+++ _ ! ALL USERS ! _ +++===
===+++ READ THIS BEFORE MAKING A COMMENT OR MODIFICATION +++===

IMPORTANT 1: Please don't post any me too message; use the Does this
bug affect you? feature you can find a bit above this bug description
  on Launchpad.

IMPORTANT 2: Do not post anything if you haven't read all comments to
verify that your point hasn't been made. If you feel tempted to stop
reading because there are too many messages, that is a strong indicator
that you shouldn't add even more comments. Developers have a tough time
to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please abstain from
  doing that.
-

  =
Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in the
duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that tracks the
  implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed
  ---
-
- More details to follow during the 12.10 cycle... ;-)

[Bug 976060] Re: Shotwell - no toolbar!

2012-07-02 Thread John Lea
I have this same bug when using the theme Ambiance. Every time I double
click on a .png file, Shotwell opens up as a 'restored' (visible but not
full screen) window. When I them maximise the window the bottom toolbar
is missing. I then have to restore the window, and then maximise it
again at which point the toolbar appears.

[Bug 111939] Re: Not possible to alt-tab during a drag-and-drop operation

2012-06-21 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

In some window managers (I believe KWin is one of them) the user is able
to initiate a drag-and-drop operation, then press alt-tab to raise a
window that will be the drop target, and only then release the mouse
button so that the drag-and-drop is performed. This is not possible with
Metacity, Beryl, Compiz or Xfwm. It is unclear to me whether this is a
limitation of the window manager or some other part of the system.

+
+
+ Use Case:
+
+ Dragging movie/audio files from nautilus to totem.
+
+ Steps to Reproduce:
+
+ 1. open totem media player full screen
+ 2. open nautilus full screen
+ 3. browse to media files
+ 4. select some media files (e.g. a movie file) and move it to start a drag
and drop operation
+ 5. press Alt+Tab
+
+ Observations:
+
+ Nothing happens.
+
+ Expected Results:
+
+ Alt+Tab should allow the user to switch tasks and preserve the drag
+ state, so the user can drag files from one application to another.
+
+ Notes:
+
+ Drag and drop works if the applications are tiled to the left/right of
+ each other, or if they are windowed so it should work when they are full
+ screen.
