The bug happens most of the time for me too, on one of my Ubuntu machines, even with all current updates. At random times it works normally, though. This is a blot on Ubuntu's front door. The /etc/gdm directory is owned by root. You need to run sudo su and enter your password, to gain root privileges. This is a significant bug -- it affects the front door to the entire Ubuntu experience. Why doesn't my account appear on the main login screen? Only one account is shown, along with a line for Other. Ubuntu 11.04, fully updated. This seems to happen intermittently. It seems to be possibly linked somehow to hardware. I added more memory to the PC. On the next boot, this problem occurred. Shutting down and restarting doesn't help. Another symptom: When the one user whose name appears on the login screen logs in, and then logs out, the normal login screen with all users is restored.
